Dave Bartholomew was the multi-talented figure behind a majority of classic New Orleans R&B of the '50s and the self-proclaimed inventor of the "Big Beat." Bartholomew had over 4,000 songs in his enormous catalog and was responsible for arranging and producing timeless records by Shirley & Lee, Lloyd Price, Smiley Lewis, and especially Fats Domino. Bartholomew was born in Edgard, Louisiana, on December 24, 1918. His first instruments were tuba and trumpet. He fronted several bands in the Crescent City before being drafted into the army. His military time brought scoring and arranging experience, which came in handy following World War II.

After his stint in the service, Bartholomew returned to New Orleans and put together a group of musicians that would comprise the bedrock of R&B in the city, including saxophonists Alvin "Red" Tyler, Lee Allen, and drummer Earl Palmer. This became the band that backed up the majority of solo talent traveling through New Orleans. Bartholomew led his first studio session under his own name in 1947 for Deluxe, but the label went out of business shortly thereafter and the sessions went unnoticed. In 1949, Bartholomew met Lew Chudd who was forming a new label, Imperial Records. Chudd hired Bartholomew as house arranger, bandleader, and talent scout, and he immediately started cranking out numerous hits through the '50s for Fats Domino, Shirley & Lee, Smiley Lewis, Earl King, Chris Kenner, Tommy Ridgely, Frankie Ford, Robert Parker, and a host of others.

Bartholomew stayed with Imperial until the hits dried up in the mid-'60s, followed by short stays at Trumpet, Mercury, and his own Broadmoor label. In the '70s and '80s, he took various behind-the-scenes musical jobs while living off his many song royalties and formed a Dixieland jazz band that continues to play around the Crescent City. The '90s found Bartholomew being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and releasing two discs: Dave Bartholomew & the Maryland Jazz Band in 1995 and New Orleans Big Beat three years later. Dave Bartholomew died in Metairie, Louisiana on June 23, 2019 at the age of 100. /Biography by Al Campbell, AllMusic

Part of Classics' chronological series, 1947-1950 collects many of New Orleans trumpeter/vocalist Dave Bartholomew's early sides recorded well before his legendary association writing songs for '50s rock icon Fats Domino. Fitting nicely into the postwar jump blues style, Bartholomew actually came out of the New Orleans brass band tradition. Although his big fat trumpet sound can be directly linked to such influences as Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge, his idiosyncratic penchant for bending notes is actually more reminiscent of guitar legends like Guitar Slim and T-Bone Walker. Included here are such bluesy and raucous tunes as "Mr. Fool," "That's How You Got Killed Before," and "Poppa Stoppa Theme Song," which has to go down as the hippest radio show theme since "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid." ~Matt Collar

David Louis Bartholomew (December 24, 1918 – June 23, 2019) was an American musician, bandleader, composer, arranger, and record producer. He was prominent in the music of New Orleans throughout the second half of the 20th century. Originally a trumpeter, he was active in many musical genres, including rhythm and blues, big band, swing music, rock and roll, New Orleans jazz, and Dixieland. In his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he was cited as a key figure in the transition from jump blues and swing to R&B and as "one of the Crescent City’s greatest musicians and a true pioneer in the rock and roll revolution."

Many musicians have recorded Bartholomew's songs, but his partnership with Fats Domino produced some of his greatest successes. In the mid-1950s they wrote more than forty hits for Imperial Records, including the Billboard number one pop chart hit "Ain't That a Shame". Bartholomew's other hit songs as a composer include "I Hear You Knocking", "Blue Monday", "I'm Walkin'", "My Ding-A-Ling", and "One Night". He was a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

Various - Risque Blues Vols. 1 & 2

A blues collection designed for the over 18s only! Here for your listening pleasure are fifty examples of what were once known as "party" records. Since the dawn of the cylinder, semi pornographic songs were an integral part of the pleasure to be derived from the audio experience. It's parental guidance all the way! There's lots of euphemisms and metaphors on display so it doesn't take much imagination to figure them out. Whichever way you cut it this dirty blues pie is chock full of double entendre with a side order of just plain bad language. Great stuff!

Dave Bartholomew proved himself to be a man of many talents: bandleader, trumpet player, songwriter, producer, arranger, talent scout, businessman, and more. He was also a recording artist, scoring one national R&B hit (“Country Boy,” which went to #14) in 1950. However, it was in his nonperforming roles that Bartholomew had the greatest impact on popular music. One of the key architects of the New Orleans sound, Bartholomew served as a major behind-the-scenes figure in the transition from jump blues and big-band swing to rhythm & blues and rock and roll in the postwar era. In particular, he will forever be revered for his work with Fats Domino, one of the Crescent City’s greatest musicians and a true pioneer in the rock and roll revolution.

Bartholomew brought Domino to Imperial Records in 1949 and collaborated with him as a songwriter, producer and arranger until 1963 (except for a year-long business-related hiatus in 1951). The records they made together introduced the big beat of New Orleans to the world. While Bartholomew’s work with Domino dominates his resume, that charmed association is only part of the story. The list of acts that Bartholomew worked with over the decades is a who’s-who of New Orleans rhythm & blues, including Smiley Lewis, Lloyd Price, Shirley & Lee, Earl King, Roy Brown, Huey "Piano" Smith, Chris Kenner, Robert Parker, Frankie Ford, James Booker, Jewel King, Bobby Mitchell, James “"Sugar Boy"” Crawford, Pee Wee Crayton and Tommy Ridgley. Beyond his work with Domino, two of the biggest records in which he played a major role were Smiley Lewis’s "I Hear You Knockin’" (written by Bartholomew) and Lloyd Price’s "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" (with Domino on piano), which was the top R&B hit of 1952.
