Laying It Down explores many styles of Blues music, spanning the last 100 years. From the funky New Orleans rhythms pioneered by Professor Longhair on tracks such as "Overture" and "Professor Calling Me", to the Trad Jazz inspired ragtime rhythms of "Bourbon Street Parade", and the Chicago Boogie Woogie sounds of "Boogie Woogie Stomp" and "The Boogie Rocks", the acoustic piano ties it all together, showing the incredible versatility of this 18th century marvel of engineering.
One of the highlights of Laying It Down is the original Boogie Woogie piano arrangement of "Sing Sing Sing/ Bumble Boogie", bringing the Big Band arrangement of Benny Goodman back to the small group setting of Louis Prima, and adding in a little Jack Fina that packs a PUNCH.
Also noteworthy is the Fatha Hines/ Bob Seeley inspired arrangement of St. Louis Blues, mixing both Stride and Boogie Woogie styles. Blues piano aficionados may also recognize the "Suitcase Blues", an old Hersal Thomas tune that has been updated with lyrics written by Del Rey.
