Oreo Blue - Rx For The Blues

Size: 111,2 MB

10. Sweet Little Angel (8:10)
11. Flip Flop Fly (4:04)

One of Arkansas' most popular bands, Oreo blue, has just released their fifth CD entitled Rx For The Blues, an exceptional offering by an equally exceptional group. Recorded at Van Buren's Fat Rabbit Studio in March of this year, the CD contains 11 cuts of hot inspired rhythm and blues with a heady dose of playful swing and downright soulful rock 'n' roll. I've followed this band from the start and have enjoyed the evolution - from basic bar band beginnings through a stack of tours and each of their recordings.

And now Rx For The Blues proves this band has made the transition to professional producers as well, here delivering a studio performance that every bit equals the delightful energy they produce live. Unlike previous offerings, this is the 'stripped-down' basic 4-piece band, without all the accoutrements of guest musicians that dot their other recordings. And it's fine too, as the resulting product portrays the very real power of music in its purest form played by seasoned, professional musicians who know each other's musical moves intimately.

Oreo Blue consists of Brian Crowne on sax, guitar and vocals; Gary Hutchison on guitar and vocals; Rod Williamson on bass; and Stephen Boudreaux on drums and vocals. Kudos to Oreo Blue for such a fine outing. /Peter Read

Oreo Blue - Earned The Right

Year: 1995
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 39:20
Size: 91,2 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Front

1. Earned The Right (3:47)
2. Look At Me (3:01)
3. Dyin' By Degrees (3:58)
4. My Groove (4:37)
5. Lied To Me For The Last Time (3:47)
6. Tell Me What You Need (5:33)
7. I'm Alright (3:00)
8. Don't Want To Be Lonely (3:09)
9. She Exudes The Blues (4:31)
10. Different Shades Of Blue (3:52)

First, I must say I am impressed. The production values on Oreo Blue's self-produced first recording, fittingly named "Earned The Right" is first class. An A-1 production from the packaging to the recording itself. Recorded and mixed at Omega Sound in Ft. Smith, its just goes to show what can be done here in the hills. The song list (all Oreo Blue originals) includes two titles credited to the group, four by band member Brian Crowne and associates, and three by the newest member of the group, Gary Hutchinson. Each song merits recognition. Especially noteworthy are the title tracks, the bluesy "She Exudes the Blues" and the hauntingly beautiful "Tell Me What You Need".

One of Fayetteville's favorite blues acts, Oreo Blue has indeed earned the right over the past few years even though they have experienced some personnel changes. Chris Payton's heartfelt vocals bring your soul right up into your throat. She is definitely the heart and soul of this act. Drummer Mike Lovelady is the glue of the group and bassist Rod the beat of the band. Hutchinson, one of the area's hottest blues guitarists adds power to the set that sends the message home. Last, but not least, vocalist, saxophonist and guitarist Brian Crowne is Oreo Blue. His vocals and sax attacks always bring out the crowds when the group plays local venues. /Fayetteville Free Weekly

Oreo Blue - 2 albums: Nuthin' But The Blues / Live By Demand

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 46:18
Size: 106.0 MB
Styles: Rockin blues
Year: 1998
Art: Front

[3:45] 1. Earned The Right
[4:18] 2. Blues By The Numbers
[4:40] 3. I Got The Blues Today
[4:23] 4. Born To Suffer
[3:27] 5. Disposable Men

[4:16] 8. Day Off Coming Soon
[3:16] 9. Mornin' Blues
[4:31] 10. Take A Little Chance
[4:17] 11. Pork Chop Shuffle

This 1998 release is solid energy from track one to track eleven, underline the word energy. The texture of Blue's sound is impressive; slow, soul drenched blues, hard line funk, sultry R&B balladry, and straight-ahead rock n roll. The secret of the unique sound isn't difficult to fathom; it's in the talent of the individuals. Brian Crowne is an incredible sax man, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. If this band had a musical anchor, it would be Crowne's wailing saxophone. While his sax attacks on this disc are subtle, they are still pleasingly pervasive.

Also of note is the considerable vocal ability of Chris Payton. She has a powerhouse voice, soulful delivery and knows when to growl for effect. Check out how she works the mike on tracks like "Born to Suffer;" it's in your face frustration and anger with just a hint of regret. Payton also does some outstanding voice work on "Mornin' Blues," an acoustic piece that really pushes all the right buttons. Not to underscore the searing contributions of Gary Hutchison; he is a fantastic guitarist whose myriad of influences could fill a CD store top to bottom. Marie was a little bit Country, and Donny was supposedly a little bit Rock n Roll but Gary Hutchison is a little bit of everything and then some! Check out the magic he pulls from his frets on "Pork Chop Shuffle." ~Bill Fountain

[12:02] 17. I'm Alright
[10:19] 18. Rock Me Baby
[11:35] 19. Watchtower

"Live by Demand", recorded in 1996, has superb sound quality, especially considering that it was only Oreo Blue's second release overall and their first live recording . As good as their studio albums are, the group was meant to be heard in concert. This set was recorded on their home turf in Arkansas and truly captures the band's energy and musical talent. Chris Payton, the band's original vocalist who is no longer a member due to health reasons, handles the vocal chores on the majority of tracks. Her voice, reminiscent of the best blues and soul female artists, soars above the band's tight playing. The band's intensity, as well as their joy in performing, permeates the entire performance.

Brian Crowne (on sax and vocals) and Gary Hutchison (on guitar and vocals) share the soloing. Both display such a level of prowess on their respective instruments, that it is unusual to find a band with their individual equal, let alone a band that has the equal of both together. ~Al Kaplan

It is nearly impossible to sum up 21 years of Oreo Blue, countless recordings and 9 official releases in oneparagraph. However, one word comes to mind: Perseverance. In 1991, Brian Crowne had a vision to form a relevant blues-rooted band and he had the work ethic to drive the band through a multitude of personnel changes and musical market fluctuations to reach that goal. When Brian retired in September of 2006, it left the core of the band; co-founder and bassist, Rod Williamson, guitarist, Gary Hutchison, and drummer, Stephen Boudreaux to re-invent the band and chase relevance into the future.
