10. Never Have A Better Night (3:51)
11. I'll Never Forget (5:46)
12. Stop The Killing (4:11)

It amuses me and disappoints me in equal measures when I read a bio like Zac Harmon’s and find he’s been making music for 50 full years and I’ve not heard of him until now … and it appears to be my loss; if these twelve songs are anything to go by.

Babe & Ricky’s Inn introduces us to Harmon’s smooth as velvet voice and in the names he saw along the way at Babe & Ricky’s Inn (the oldest blues club in Los Angeles) which double as a list of his influences too. A son of Jackson, Mississippi the album is named after his Mother, Floreada which is a nice touch on a a disc full of very personal and seemingly mostly autobiographical songs.
Even though he has several albums under his belt, with two being on the same Catfood Records label; Harmon sounds like he’s singing from the very centre of his heart in stories from his life and that of those around him.
Glass Ceiling is a prime example, as he alludes to the ‘glass ceiling’ that effects people of colour and not just women and like so many songs here, neatly combines his oh so soulful voice with a dark shade of the Blues from his band.

Harmon had a hand in ten of the songs here, and it proves that he can not just write a really good and listenable song, but guide a story to keep the listeners’ attention, which is exactly what you get with the razor sharp songs Sugarman, Never Forget and Let It Slide which are all intrinsically different in style and content; but unmistakeably from the same pen.
Then you get songs like Stress; which is a song exactly like you’d expect from a title like that as Zac pours his heart out about the problems of juggling finances many of us face on a day to day basis.
He can also dig deep into the Blues too, using some scintillating guitar work alongside a brass section on the sleazy and slinky Big Dog Blues, which sounds uncannily like someone like Bobby Womack or Jeffrey Osbourne singing alongside George Benson on a sultry night in a downtown Juke joint.
Before I go into my Favourite two songs here, there are a couple of subjects Zac Harmon sings about in a way that will bring a tear to your eye and your heart close to bursting; first out of the traps is Track #2, Fake News a sordid tale of a man caught cheating on his wife; but lying his way out until she doubts her own eyes.
The other is the final song on the album; Stop The Killing, featuring the legendary guitar of Caleb Quaye and is such a very topical subject this song could have come from Stax in the 1960’s but will sadly also be something important and vital for generations to come.
I’ve just mentioned Bobby Womack, and there’s a stunning song of his here that ties as one of my two Favourite songs; That’s The Way I Feel About Cha (alongside SueAnn Carwell) is the sort of ‘late night Soul/Blues combo’ that you don’t want to tell your friends about as you want to keep it a secret, for those sad and lonely times when you want to curl up in a dark room with no contact with the outside world.
The other, and possibly my actual Favourite song is the metaphor laden, breathy and sexy, Never Had a Better Night which takes us deep into Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson territory but with a Stax cutting edge via the superb guitar playing and amazingly cool rhythm section.

I don’t know if I need to dip further back into Zac Harmon’s back catalogue as these twelve songs surely can’t be bettered … or can they? ~The Rocking Magpie

04. Soul Land (4:13)
05. Love For You Baby (3:23)

07. Waiting To Be Free (3:57)
08. New Year's Day (4:36)
09. Imagine A Prayer (3:37)

Produced by Grammy-winner Jim Gaines (Santana, Steve Ray Vaughan, and Journey) and recorded at Sonic Ranch in, Tornillo, Texas, Long As I Got My Guitar features ten songs performed in Harmon’s inimitable funky, soul-blues sound. Backing Zac’s lead guitar and vocals on most of the tracks are The Rays: Bob Trenchard – bass; Richy Puga – drums; Johnny McGhee – guitar; Dan Ferguson – keyboards; plus, SueAnn Carwell and Corey Lacey – background vocals; with Harmon’s regular touring band on additional tracks. Catfood Records released his 2019 label debut, Mississippi Bar BQ, also produced by Jim Gaines, to rave critical acclaim and extensive radio airplay.

The songs on Long As I Got My Guitar include tunes co-penned by Harmon and Catfood Records owner Bob Trenchard. The album’s repertoire runs the gamut of the blues experience: from the uptown sound of “Soul Land” and “Love for You Baby;” to the gritty “Deal with the Devil,” “People Been Talking,” “Waiting to Be Free,” “New Year’s Day” and the title track, the latter two especially distinguished by Harmon’s stinging blues guitar attack. Dan Ferguson’s accordion playing on “Crying Shame,” even adds a little Zydeco touch to the track.

“This probably is the most memorable record of my career,” Zac Harmon says about the new CD. “Bob Trenchard and I were so much on the same page with all that we went through in 2020 that it spawned some incredibly emotional song testimonials, such as “Scatter My Ashes to the Wind.” Great songs, great musicians and a great producer have once again created a great musical presentation.”

Live at Babe and Ricky's Inn is the debut release from multi-talented singer/guitarist, Zac Harmon. Live at Babe and Ricky's Inn showcases Mississippi Blues at its best and introduces the forty-something year-old Harmon as a true torchbearer for keeping "down home blues" alive.
Zac Harmon has been expressing an unbiased love for music for well over twenty years. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, he is a disciple of the Farish Street blues sound. Of course, Farish Street is universally recognized as the home of many great blues legends, including the late, great Elmore James.
Harmon's early years included stints as a guitarist for Z.Z. Hill, McKinley Mitchell, Dorothy Moore and Sam Myers. Moving to Los Angeles in 1980 to pursue a career in music, he worked as a studio musician and began to make a name for himself as a writer/producer, crafting songs for such varied notables as Karen White, Freddie Jackson, Evelyn "Champagne" King, The Whispers, Cherrelle, K.C. & JoJo, The Mississippi Mass Children's Choir, Brian Wilson, Rhonda Clark, Alexander O'Neal andThe O'Jays.
Later, while composing songs for a movie score and performing those songs in the studio, Harmon decided to pursue his longtime dream of recording his first blues project. The result is an electrifying testimonial to the blues, featuring eight totally original songs that truly embody the Mississippi Blues sound.
Capturing the souls and minds of his audiences with such favorites as "Forty Days", "Full-figured Woman" and "Stormin' in Mississippi", this son of the South is glad to finally celebrate his musical homecoming. It's been a long time coming, but a change has definitely come! ~Torchbearer for "Down Home Blues"

2. Hattie Mae (Feat. Jimmy Z) (4:58)
3. Since You Been Gone (4:31)
4. Back Bitin' Back Stabbers (5:04)

12. Scratch (4:46)
13. Want Ads (4:41)
14. Man Is Not Meant To Be Alone (Feat. Neo Blues) (5:47)

Zac Harmon follows up his live album Shot in the Kill Zone with this studio effort, furthering his rough-and-ready blues persona. As a guitarist/vocalist, Harmon is in his element on this original set of tunes that proves he's ready for blues-rock prime-time beyond cover tunes. Harmon's strong vocal presence is hard to pin down with a specific influence, but he's completely convincing as a soulful man, lover's crooner, or hardcore get-down performer. Harmon has written some themes -- like "The Older Woman," with full sound complemented by a horn section, and "Want Ads," where he's been missing his ex so much that he's puttin' it in the classifieds -- that certainly reflect real modern-day life in a media-driven society.

He also looks back at the urban blues tradition during songs like "Hattie Mae," in a rock base merging with a classic like "Wang Dang Doodle," and "Keep the Blues Alive," which parallels the famous tune "Help Me." For his other side, Harmon offers sweet soul à la Otis Redding or a little reggae mixed into his blues, but mainly thrives on funky heavy rock, especially during a stompdown original, "Honey Bee," in an upbeat mood for his gal.

Of particular interest to those who enjoy blues harmonica, Jimmy Z. is consistently driving all the points home, while keyboardist/producer/co-songwriter Christopher Troy also deserves due credit for energizing the leader to the upper heights. If hard-driving, honest, no-nonsense contemporary music mindful of urban South Side Chicago tradition is your favorite kind of blues, then quite likely Zac Harmon is your main man. /Michael G. Among the first bands confirmed to play at the Mahindra Blues Festival were The Tedeschi Trucks Band, formed by blues vocalist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks, who has been voted number 16 on ROLLING STONE’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Following their 2011 debut release Revelator, which won the Best Blues Album at the 2012 Grammy Awards, the Tedeschi Trucks Band released Made Up Mind in August this year, moving to a groovy, southern rock sound with equal acclaim. The Tedeschi Trucks Band, who branch out to a 10-piece live act featuring Tedeschi’s rugged vocals over Trucks’ roaring, dirty guitar licks, are the latest blues force who will debut in India in February. Tedeschi Trucks Band will also jam with American blues guitarist Doyle Bramhall II at the festival.

American blues guitarist and four-time Grammy winner Jimmie Vaughan will also debut in India in February for the fourth edition of the festival. Vaughan, who was confirmed to play the 2013 edition, dropped out in January after suffering a heart attack. Vaughan is now confirmed to play at at Mahindra Blues Festival, which takes place on February 15th and 16th, 2014 in Mumbai.

The lineup also includes blues guitarist Zac Harmon and Chicago blues band Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, who will make their India debut at the festival. Indian bands on the lineup include Shillong blues rock act Soulmate and Mumbai instrumental rock band Blackstratblues. Says Owen Roncon, of festival organizers Oranjuice Entertainment, “Jimmie Vaughan was keen on doing this show since he couldn’t make it last year. Apart from that, our focus is on getting young blues acts and exposing a younger side of the genre.”

Roncon adds that Soulmate will be an act to watch out for at the festival, where they launch their third full-length album and play a special set. Says Roncon, “Soulmate are doing a brand new set. They’re bringing a lot of their folk musicians from Shillong and planning to go with a folk blues sound.”

Zac Harmon - 2 albums: Music Is Medicine / The Blues According to Zacariah

Born and raised in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi, Zac Harmon is a true disciple of the music that emanated from the city’s historic Farish Street district, universally recognized as the home of such great blues legends like the late, great Elmore James.

While in high school and college, Harmon gigged as a guitarist for the likes of Z.Z. Hill, Dorothy Moore and Sam Myers. Relocating to L.A. in the early eighties, he worked as a studio musician and then established himself as a writer and producer, crafting songs for the likes of the O’Jays, Whispers, Karyn White, Alexander O'Neal and Black Uhuru.

Composing and performing music for a movie score, Harmon was compelled to pursue his longtime dream to return to his roots and record his first Blues project. The result was 2002’s Live at Babe & Ricky's Inn, an electrifying testimony to Mississippi Blues, which showcased the sound at its best and introduced Harmon as a true torchbearer for the “next generation of the Blues”. In 2004, with his then band, the Mid South Blues Revue, he won the Blues Foundation’s prestigious International Blues Challenge (IBC) title of “Best Unsigned Band".

DEEP TEXAS BLUES featuring ZAC HARMON, FINIS TASBY, ANSON FUNDERBURGH and JAMES GOODE… Texan James Goode describes himself as an “old rascal and beat-up coach”, but this Rockabilly Hall-Of-Fame inductee, songwriter, bass player, and creator of the Ruff Kutt Blues Band certainly knows how to field one hell of a Blues team. THAT’S WHEN THE BLUES BEGINS features fourteen songs written or co-written by Goode, performed by world class Bluesmen including vocalist/guitarist Zac Harmon, vocalist Finis Tasby, and producer/guitarist Anson Funderburgh.

The first Ruff Kutt Blues Band album, Mill Block Blues (2011), garnered critical raves and was so successful that Goode was able to donate $10,000 of proceeds to the Blues Foundation’s HART Fund, providing relief to Blues musicians in need. When he decided to do a follow up, it went without saying that the first call would go out to Texas Blues guitar hero Anson Funderburgh, who anchored the first CD. Anson was quick to sign on to produce the new CD, and soon they brought in internationally acclaimed Blues heavyweights Zac Harmon and Finis Tasby to form the nucleus of the team for THAT’S WHEN THE BLUES BEGINS. Rounding things out are Wes Starr on drums, Ron Jones on saxophone, and keyboardist/engineer Gentleman John Street.

This all-star aggregation hits a deep Blues groove and delivers Goode’s songs with the assured, relaxed intensity of seasoned pros. Sadly, these sessions are the last recordings Finis Tasby completed before suffering a debilitating stroke in December, 2012.
