Everyone who have heard Chicago Bound live have let themselves been fascinated by their authentic Chicago sound. Now they're finally available on an album! With a line-up consisting of some of the most experienced blues musicians in Norway, they have become a popular band in blues clubs around the country. Their reputation as a live band resulted in the task to act as backing band for the legend Louisiana Red during the Notodden Blues Festival in 1997.

The band consists of Frode Larsen and Espen Moen from Larsen's Last Chance, Kurt Slevigen from Oslo Bluesband and Eirek Sandnes from Sugar Daddies. In addition Martin Windstad from Vidar Busk & His True Believers participates on percussion.

An English blues-rock institution, Savoy Brown never achieved as much success in their homeland as they did in America, where they promoted career-making albums like Looking In and Hellbound Train with nonstop touring. Led by guitarist and sole constant member Kim Simmonds, the band were at the fore of the 1960s and '70s blues-rock movement. With Simmonds at the helm, Savoy Brown remained remarkably prolific over the decades, touring the world and recording and issuing new material on an almost yearly basis. In 2020, they released Ain't Done Yet, their 40th long-player.

The group was formed in 1965 by guitarist Kim Simmonds and harmonica player John O'Leary; the original lineup included singer Bryce Portius, keyboardist Bob Hall, guitarist Martin Stone, bassist Ray Chappell, and drummer Leo Manning. This crew appeared on the band's 1967 debut, Shake Down, a collection of blues covers. Seeking a different approach, Simmonds dissolved the group and brought in guitarist Dave Peverett, bassist Rivers Jobe, drummer Roger Earl, and singer Chris Youlden, who gave them a distinctive frontman with his vocal abilities, bowler hat, and monocle.

With perhaps their strongest lineup, Savoy Brown quickly made a name for themselves, recording originals like "Train to Nowhere." However, Youlden left the band in 1970 following Raw Sienna, and shortly thereafter, Peverett, Earl, and new bassist Tony Stevens departed to form Foghat, continuing the pattern of consistent membership turnover. Simmonds collected yet another lineup and began a hectic tour of America, showcasing the group's now-refined bluesy boogie-rock style, which dominated the rest of their albums. The band briefly broke up in 1973, but re-formed the following year.

Throughout the '80s and '90s Simmonds remained undeterred by a revolving-door membership and continued to tour and record. Savoy Brown's first album for the Blind Pig label, Strange Dreams, was released in 2003, followed by Steel in 2007. Subsequent LPs include the compilation Too Much of a Good Thing, Voodoo Moon, Goin' to the Delta, and 2015's The Devil to Pay. In 2017, the band returned with the full-length Witchy Feelin', which hit number one on the Billboard Blues Albums chart. Buoyed by that success, Simmonds and Savoy Brown returned with the group's 40th career album, Ain't Done Yet, in 2020, with the concert LP Taking the Blues Back Home arriving later that year. /Biography by Steve Huey, AllMusic

"It was the mid 1980s and suddenly the London Blues scene was enlivened by the arrival of a great Chicago Blues legend... Eddie C. Campbell. It didnt take long for me and Eddie to hook up. He refused my offer to manage him, but I still set up some nice things for him. He made an album in Holland, did some English gigs and European work through my contacts. And we made an album. I dug out the 35 years old original multi-track session tapes, and had them transferred to digital so we could work safely without risking the tapes. This has given us a much more powerful mix, a totally new sound. Eddie of course is really strong, he plays that West Side guitar style superbly. We also add four live tracks from the Tamines Blues Festival in 1992. Eddie is in a more standard blues mode, but its a great contrast and fits in really well." John Stedman, 2021.

Billy Proulx has been entertaining audiences as a singer songwriter all over the southland and the southwest for longer he would like to admit (40 years). He played the Whiskey and the Troubadour ( before it was pay to play ) as well as the Sawdust Festival. He’s opened for B.B. King at the Universal Amphitheater and Johnny Winter at B.B. Kings in Los Angeles.

For six years he hosted “Blues Monday” an acoustic open mic at the Buffalo Inn on Route 66 in Upland California, with guests the likes of Chris Darrow , Amy Scruggs and Stan West. He was asked by Amy Scruggs to play dobro on a song called “Coming Home” which became a regional hit and a hit on USO radio. This gave Billy a chance to work with Emmy Award winning engineer and producer Paul McKenna.

Equally at home on the guitar or dobro he is a master of various styles of finger-picking, flat-picking and bottle-neck. He covers Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt, and Blind Willie McTell just to mention a few. Billy always features tunes of his own and they go over big time where ever he plays.

BILLY PROULX & TOMMY TOO is a Sonny Terry / Brownie McGhee style act that features Tommy Weatherell on harmonica. They have been wowing audiences with a variety of acoustic styles including Blues, Folk, Ragtime, Pop and Traditional American Music. They include storytelling and “clever” repartee. well at least they think they’re clever

As if all this weren’t enough to keep him busy, Billy also works as a side man playing keyboards, guitar, dobro and harmonica in several groups, including TOOMSTONE , THE VINTAGE COWBOYS, BRING YOUR OWN BLUES, THE SKY LINE EXPRESS and has his own band BILLY PROULX & THE CREW.

Robert Potts was born into a large family in Greenwood, MS. In 1967, he moved to Memphis to start his career in music. His first stop was an audition at Stax Recording and Hi Records. . In, 1970 he penned and recorded his first 45 single entitled, "Funky Postman" and "Under Your Spell." These releases lead to him appearing on local television, The Talent Party and Swing Shift. In the 1980's he landed a recording contract with 8th Street Records. Several singles were released including "Lost In The County Jail", "Seven Years Blues", and several cover tunes. The recordings were jukebox favorites. He also is a successful songwriter penning the tune "Don't Make Me Late," by Johnnie Taylor, which he co-wrote with George Jackson.

In 1995 Dr. "Feelgood" started his own Record label, RLP Records. He released a single in 1996 and a full length CD in 1997. The CD, entitled "Love Starved," consisted of ten songs, {a combination of blues, soul, and a harmonica instrumental.} In January of 2000,he released a second RLP CD entitled "Blues Me 4 U LOSE ME." But his real break came when he signed with Ecko Records where he has released two discs. His biggest hit so far has been "Make It Talk". Potts is the father of singer Sheba Potts-Wright. In 2007 he dropped his first, bona fide blues album "Going Back To Memphis".

Clara holds a Bachelor of Music from N.U.I Maynooth and also spent 2 years in the Irish World Academy of Music & Dance while gaining a Music Therapy Masters from The University of Limerick. She also spends half an hour each day polishing her All Ireland Medal for Sean-Nós singing!

Focusing on the lives and experiences of African Americans is the themed album series presented by The Mojo Man via Koko Mojo Records. The latest addition to a remarkably interesting series, and one with a social conscience, is ‘Money, Money, Money’. With a great shot of boxing legend Muhammed Ali gracing the front cover and depicted deep below in an unnamed bank vault ready to horde a wedge load of cash, this compilation provides accounts of situations where the individual is either struggling to make ends meet or the occasional example where the individual has a bit of spare change in their pockets. With blues and rhythm and blues being the music ordered to represent these songs about money, there is no better place to start than Jerry McCain’s raw blues shuffle ‘That’s What They Want’. From this position whether returning to the beginning of the track list or fast forwarding to its end, the musical journey will not disappoint as there’s plenty of rhythm and blues to keep the listener entertained. Whether it’s the carefree attitude detected in the tempo of Detroit Junior’s ‘Money Tree’, or the brassy rhythm of The Poor Boys ‘(I’m Gonna) Spend My Money’, rhythm and blues is certainly the dominant force throughout the album. With Georgia Lane really letting it out of the bag with the feisty composition ‘Get It’, to Dwight Duvoll dropping deep vocals and thoroughly convincing when explaining how to ‘Get The Money’ set to a bright rhythm with, again, plenty of brass instrumentation and proving a real driving force. Add to that a classic from The Clovers with ‘Your Cash Ain’t Nothing But Trash’ and further cool brass instrumentation by way of Billy Hamlin and ‘If You Ain’t Got No Bread’, and the album ‘Money, Money, Money’ can safely be said is worth exactly all of that and more!

Zoom was born on a small farm in Romulus Michigan, but has cut a path to stages all over the US, Canada, Europe and the Middle East.

She was introduced to the blues at 3 years old and in the late 70’s, she saw Koko Taylor for the first time. That experience of seeing and hearing Koko’s raw tone changed her life.

Hitting the road in the 90’s and gaining recognition, she was invited to join prestigious Chicago Blues Tours across Europe. Sharing the stage with some of her idols like Koko Taylor, Bobby Bland, Albert King, James Cotton, JuniorWells, John Primer, Lucky Peterson, Billy Branch and Maurice Vaughn just to name a few.

Things were definitely moving up up up, but Zoom made a sudden stop and took a 2 decade hiatus from the music business, to raise her family.

After that time and making the decision to get back in the business, she contacted her old friend, Shawn Kellerman.

In her time away from the music business, Shawn had been touring with his own band plus blues greats like Bobby Rush, Sherman Robertson and Lucky Peterson, in over 40 countries. When Zoom & Shawn reconnected, Shawn had been touring with Lucky Peterson for 8 years and was producing Lucky’s newest album, celebrating Lucky’s 50 years in the business.

Now you have the opportunity to witness ZOOM’s vocal POWER and DRIVE with Shawn’s HIGH ENERGY guitar, that will take a ferocious ride of infectious funk and blues grooves.

Chris Farlowe (born John Henry Deighton, 13 October 1940) is an English rock, blues and soul singer. He is best known for his hit single “Out of Time”, which rose to #1 in the UK Singles Chart in 1966, and his association with Colosseum and the Thunderbirds.

Remastered by Eroc, this 55-track set includes 16 previously unreleased live recordings. Focusing on Chris Farlowe's 60s output, over 50 newly remastered Mono recordings across three CDs chart the story of one of the premier voices of UK R&B/Rock and featuring Dave Greenslade and Albert Lee. Includes singles and EP tracks from 1962-1965, BBC sessions including several new-to-CD and a previously unreleased live show from 1965 recorded at London's iconic Flamingo Club. With a career spanning over six decades, Chris Farlowe remains one of the UK's most powerful song stylists. His 1966 No.1 hit 'Out Of Time' propelled him into international pop consciousness but it was his solid R&B credentials and soulful vocals, honed over years of live performing with his band the Thunderbirds, which continue to resonate with fans and collectors to this day. Danny Bryant, one of the UK’s leading and celebrated blues artists, is releasing his twelfth album ‘The Rage To Survive’ on 29 October through Jazzhaus Records. Following on from the critically acclaimed 2019 record ‘Means Of Escape’, this is one of his most heartfelt and powerful records yet.

As per ‘Means Of Escape’, Danny once again wrote and produced the record himself, working alongside Grammy Award winning Ian Dowling (Adele, KT Tunstall) who recorded, engineered and mixed the record. Moving from uncompromising thunderous blues tracks through to more tender emotional tracks, ‘The Rage To Survive’ is Danny pouring raw emotion into the record which took just four days to record!

The record was recorded as live – an experience Danny had craved since playing live was taking away from him and his band… “I wanted the record to have the energy of us playing live, it had been over a year since we had all been in a room together and the tracks ‘Looking Good’, ‘Till The Bottle Runs Dry’ and ‘Rescue Me’ I wrote very much with an eye on them being fun and cool songs to play live. It was a great experience, it was great being back with the guys playing again and I think that energy comes across in the music.”

Packed with his now notorious and celebrated signature guitar playing, the opening and title track ‘The Rage To Survive’ – inspired by his early feelings in lockdown and rescuing an abandoned dog from Romania – kicks in immediately with his gruff vocal which sets the tone for the album perfectly before moving into the more tender ‘Trouble With Love’ which carries a feel of late 60’s/early 70’s British blues and then into ‘Invisible Me’, a track about Danny’s own mental health challenges and the feeling of isolation in everyday life, before building back into ‘Rescue Me’.

‘Falling Tears’, a stripped back track with a more classic rock tilt gives the album a poignant middle point and builds back into ‘Make Me Pay’, a more traditional blues track flowing perfectly into the ‘Rain Stops Play’, a love song with a twist, before hitting the brass ensemble for the instrumental ‘Looking Good’ demonstrating Danny’s playing at it absolute best. The album wraps as it began with the hard rolling ‘Till The Bottle Run Dry’ into the ballad ‘Westport’. This is an album that takes the listener on a journey of emotion that seeps through every track.

With an average of 10 years of experience, the band consolidates the project with a Blues record that shows the path taken by each member. Composed by Federico Verteramo on guitar and vocals, Christian Morana on bass and Germán Pedraza on drums. Musicians young but with wide experience in the Blues. With a powerful sound, mostly recorded live in Estudios del Parral, the album seeks to replicate the strength that the group shows in their shows. The production of the album was carried out by Julio Fabiani, guitarist and composer of the consolidated band Tamesis and producer in other important projects of Afro-American music. In addition, it counts on outstanding guests like Guido Venegoni (Thames); Florence Andrada, eminent Soul singer from Argentina; And the harmonica player Jorge Costales, among several others. The songs that make up the plaque are mostly cult, within the genre and the history of the Blues, rescued to reinterpret them from the perspective of a band that plays and lives in the XXI century, as well as versions of themes such as the classic Of The Rolling Stones "Honky Tonk Women" and a tribute to the great Ray Charles with the vocal interpretation of Florence Andrada in "(Night Time) is the right time".

Howlin' Wolf is credited with the much-used line "you cannot play the blues unless you have suffered". Whilst it is true that living in Britain today cannot be compared with the cotton fields of the Southern USA in the early 1900's this does not mean we do not suffer in some other way. Italian guitarist Luca Giordano and Spanish harmonica player Quique Gomez both loved Chicago blues and decided to travel there to immerse themselves in Chicago blues. Coincidentally, the two Europeans were there at the same time, met each other and decided to do something together. In the meantime they just kept busy with their own band and career, but every now and then they went out together. After doing this for a year or two and also making some friends in Chicago, two years ago they entered the studio with some of those friends and the album "Chicago '3011 Studios' Sessions" was recorded. Those friends are not the least. In addition to the accompanists Ariyo (piano), Harlan Terson (bass) and Marty Binder (drums), bassist Bob Stroger, guitarists Jimmy Burns, Eddie C. Campbell, Breezy Rodio, Pete Galanis and harmonica player Billy Branch. The album consists of six original compositions, six adaptations of classics and a jam as a bonus. What we are presented with here is excellent Chicago blues, made by enthusiasts. That should be obvious. There is nothing new under the sun; it's just good-sounding old-fashioned Chicago blues. The six covers are performed well, of which “Outskirts Of Town” is an outlier for me, but their own work stands head and shoulders above that. A special mention deserves “The Fool” and “Three Wheels Automobile”. A fruitful cooperation between Spain and Italy on American soil. Every blues fan should listen to this.

Of the many obscure projects Jimmy Page was associated with prior to Led Zeppelin, one of the most notable was a studio session he recorded live alongside noted keyboardist Brian Auger, and famed bluesman, Sonny Boy Williamson. The session took place at IBC Studios on January 28, 1965. Those present at the session included, Jimmy Page on guitar, Brian Auger on organ, Ricky Brown on bass Mickey Waller on drums along with Joe Harriot & Alan Skidmore on saxophone, and Sonny Boy taking up vocal and harmonica. While doing press for the documentary film "It Might Get Loud" Jimmy Page also recalled the session with Sonny Boy Williamson: "The one that was done live with The Yardbirds hadn’t come out. It was our manager who called me. I was a studio musician, at the time, and Sonny Boy was living in his flat. Somebody told me once that they went to the house and they heard Sonny Boy plucking a live chicken. I don’t know how true that was. That didn’t happen when I was there. Sonny Boy and myself rehearsed these numbers in the manager’s flat and, by the time we got into the studio a couple days later, Sonny Boy had forgotten all of the arrangements of what we were going to do. It was cool. Good music comes out of that."

Solo career:
In 1997, he released Aleluia, Aleluia, an album that would mark the transition from rock to blues, and which opened up horizons for Bebeco, who had ended his activities with Garotos 3 years earlier. From 1999, the year of the release of Me Chamam Curto Circuito, Bebeco alternated periods in Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and São Paulo. During this period, he released individual albums such as Bebeco Garcia & O Bando dos Ciganos (2001), Confidencial (2003), always accompanied by Bando de Ciganos, formed by the musicians Egisto Dal Santo on bass, firstly Pedro Garcia, son of Bebeco, held the drum, then came the former partner of the first power trio formation, Garotos da Rua, Edinho Galhardi. Finally and a masterpiece, Rio Grande Rio Blues (2005). All these records confirmed the musician's reputation as one of the best guitarists in Rio Grande do Sul.
On May 19, 2010, after an operation to remove a brain tumor in the previous month, he did not resist the postoperative complications and died in the PUC-RS hospital, victim of a generalized infection. During his burial, Egisto Dal Santo, his friend and musical partner, paid tribute to the singer.

Elvin met Smokey in Chicago in 1960 while attending regular college at the University of Chicago and “blues college” on the south and west sides. Smokey would have a steady mostly local career in the Chicago blues scene, while Elvin would gain prominence, first with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and then as an artist in his own right.

The CD is entitled “Chicago Blues Buddies” and it features studio recordings from Chicago and live recordings from San Francisco,Chicago & Clarksdale (Mississippi) from 1992 to 2006, plus 7 previously unissued live tracks & interview.

The realisation that Christmas is nearly upon us is greeted with a fresh compilation from Koko Mojo Records and specifically a Doo Wop Christmas. Focusing on vocal group performers with an entirely Christmas theme is a wise idea considering the often-warm feeling one gets when listening to such great vocal harmonies and rhythms. With thirty tracks featuring, ‘Let’s Have A Doo Wop Christmas’ is lined with numbers from The Ravens, The Five Keys, The Orioles, The Platters, The Moonglows et al. Steering the listener to hopefully much Christmas cheer is ‘Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer’ from The Melodeers and then proceeded by gloriously upbeat The Shells ‘Happy Holiday’. This collection also excels for providing those deeply comforting sounds where the melodies are slowed right down, and the vocals are welcoming as in The Falcons ‘Can This Be Christmas’, and ditto The Drifters’ ‘White Christmas’. With such compilations feeding a special corner of record collectors’ collections, other gems gracing this wonderful collection include golden vocals of The Marcels’ ‘Don’t Cry For Me This Christmas’ and livening the festive period up once more The Hepsters ‘Rockin’ And Rollin’ With Santa Claus’, The Penguins and sleighbells accompaniment ‘Jingle Jangle’, and then offering more great vocals and something of a duet via The Nic Nacs featuring Mickey Champion ‘Gonna Have A Merry Christmas’. If there is one Christmas album to own this year, then ‘Let’s Have A Doo Wop Christmas’ is a clear winner.

Some bands, like Pearl Jam and Dave Mathews Band for instance, are known for delivering to their fan-base a live recordings of performances. In Gov’t Mule’s case, that strategy of releasing, as much as possible, the recordings (including bootlegs, shows in small venues, etc.) is one of the most pleasant and delightful acts for the Mule’s fans. But, this time, it isn’t just a simple live performance record. It’s from the rawer and notorious era, still as a power-trio with Allen Woody on bass, at the beginnings of the band. As the album’s name makes clear, we’re talking about Mule’s live performance in Georgia, in 1997.

At that time, Gov’t Mule had released only their debut self-titled studio album (Gov’t Mule, 1995) and the first live album (Live At Roseland Ballroom, 1996). So now, 24 years later, anybody can check all the power of a band that became more than a side project of Mule’s members. Live At The Cotton Club has 29 tracks and over than 2h 20 min, and brings either a refresh or reminder to the newer Mule fans, where the cohesiveness and strength of Gov’t Mule’s songs come from. Some tracks, like “Game Face”, “Birth Of Mule” and “Blind Man In The Dark” are present on Mule’s set-list until today, even because those songs had become classics throughout the years.

They had, and still keep, the spirit of a jam band. Beyond that, inspired tributes of their influences were performed at that occasion, like Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen Jam” and The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”. Cover songs like “Good Morning Little School Girl”, Free’s “Mr. Big” and ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid” also were included, but always with the weight and personality that have made Gov’t Mule one of the greatest jam bands of all time. As expected, the album also brings plenty of classic blues tributes, including vocal solo performances for Blind Willie Johnson’s “John The Revelator” and Elmore James’s “I Can’t Hold Out”. Another pleasure for the listeners is the small slide blues session formed by “Goin’ Out West”, “Gonna Send You Back To Georgia” and “Just Got Paid”.

Jorgen Carlsson, the current bassman, joined the band only in 2004. But he assumed the “incumbency” of remixing and remastering Live At The Cotton Club, even being bullied by his peers that said on Facebook “…the bass might rattle your windows…”. For real, what you’ll find is flawless post-production work, preserving details and bringing the whole energy of the band straight to the front speaker. For instance, a curious detail occurs at the end of the sixth track “Birth Of Mule”, where Haynes warns the crowd that they were playing a couple of “new” songs and they would go to the studio to start the recordings of a “new” album, what later came to be the Mule’s classic Dose. Another unusual fact is that the album wasn’t released for sales (neither physical nor digital) at least so far, being available only on streaming platforms.

Live At The Cotton Club is an important record not only to realize how the band worked as power-trio but also to verify that, with the incorporation of Carlsson and Danny Louis, Gov’t Mule not only kept their roots but aggregated the natural extensions to their unique music. Blues Rock Review already reviewed other live albums, studio albums and selected our Top 10 Songs, but listening to Live At The Cotton Club makes it clear that Gov’t Mule continues to be one of the most important blues rock bands of the present day. ~The Review: 9/10 ~Marcel Innocentini

The Druids of Stonehenge are a garage rock and psychedelic band from New York City who were active in the 1960s. They began as an R&B-based rock combo in the vein of the early Rolling Stones called the Druids, but later moved to the West Coast and changed their name to the Druids of Stonehenge, evolving their sound to fit the burgeoning psychedelic rock coming to the fore. In 2017 original singer David Budge and guitarist Carl Hauser reformed with lifelong friend and Dylan guitarist Billy Cross, producing an album titled ‘Resurrection’ that explored the band’s roots in historic blues. They now have their first album of all-original material “American Ghosts” released this month. The Druids tell stories through their own rich and intimate lifetime of experiences. Each song is a short story that reflects on the indiscretions of youth, lost loves, the ‘battle of the sexes’ or hopes for the future.

The album opens with the laid back 'The Prettiest Train' with some alluring guitar riffs and relaxed organ and a drum beat that guides this composition along. It's an almost spoken word piece that relates so many great lines shared with a resonating deep vocal. We have a cracking bluesy foot stomper with 'Run For Cover'. Think ZZ Top and Dr Feelgood and you'll be in the right ballpark. A song that will NOT fail to move you. The guitar riffs and chords are truly awesome and the addition of backing vocals from Maria 'MJ' Hauser in the last minute of the track was a stroke of genius.

'My Rider Is Gone' is to me a sort of bar room blues number with some wonderful resonator guitar and delightful keyboards supplied by Dan Hemmer. Henrik Askou laid down a superb beat to allow Billy Cross to let rip some blinding riffs towards the end of the track. We have a bluesy rock out with 'What A Women Will Do'. There were again some sublime guitar workouts midway and throughout the piece. A sort of resignation, lyrically about being unable to comprehend or understand the opposite sex. Some of the lyrics, as the band have said, are of their time like “I know I had it figured, things that turned you on, let's not make this complicated, let's just get it on” so wrong yet so right.

There's a Southern rock vibe to 'The Deal' a tale of dodgy, maybe as AC/DC relate “dirty deeds, done dirt cheap” a simple type of number but so effectively delivered. They say you learn something every day and I certainly did with 'Seven Percent Solution'. A brief search and I find it relates to a passage in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's second novel 'The Sign of Four' featuring Sherlock Holmes dating back to 1890 about cocaine use. This submission is a sort of shady grubby tale of finding some seriously hard drugs and the consequences thereafter delivered in a soft rock sort of Steely Dan ala 'Do It Again' texture. An amusingly wry observation on a serious subject. I have to say I loved the relaxed percussion provided by CJ Hauser and Roger Kahn, it was delightful.

'Dance With The Devil' is a low down and dirty amalgamation of blues and rock with a marvellous echo and reverberation resonance throughout. Henrik Askou's pounding drumming was a splendid addition as was the backing vocals provided by the trio of Billy Cross, CJ Hauser, and Maria 'MJ' Hauser. We have a straightforward rock outing with 'Rock Candy' which is led by the backbone of Henrik Askou's drums and Dan Hemmer's chiming keyboard. The backing trio as with the last number were there fill the number out and to add a real depth.

'You Got To Pay' has that strolling, rolling, foot tapping bluesy rock feel about it. The probing lyrics complement this outing into the consequences that occur depending on what path you take in life. The album closes with 'Slip Back Away' a track that could have been included in any Rolling Stones album from the last twenty years. The whole piece seemed to be driven from a central bass line ably furnished by Thorbjørn Appehl. There were also some glorious guitar riffs and chords and some splendid backing vocals throughout.

I have to say I found “American Ghosts” an absolute delight. David Budge has an interesting vocal range which at times is questioning, tender, humorous but at all times entertaining. Along with his co-conspirators Carl Hauser and Billy Cross and the addition of experienced musicians and friends they have succeeded in delivering a powerhouse of a blues come rock blueprint that is a joy to behold. These fellas may no longer be teenage reprobates, but they certainly are no slouches and share a record that will leave your truly satisfied.

A release to exorcise any Ghosts whether American or not. Rating 9/10 ~Damian Sullivan

Sue Foley just keeps getting better. On her sixth album, the singer/songwriter and guitarist turns in a diverse set of blues (a slow and mournful version of Willie Dixon's "The Same Thing"); Stax-styled, horn-fueled R&B ("To Be Next to You"); New Orleans party rockin' (an obscure Freddie King cover of "You're Barkin' Up the Wrong Tree"); and even a spooky, flamenco-influenced spaghetti Western instrumental ("Mediterranean Breakfast") -- and it all surprisingly gels into a consistently satisfying album. Foley's distinctive voice -- part Bonnie Raitt, part Bessie Smith, part Memphis Minnie -- has evolved and matured, tearing and tugging at the edges, flawlessly complementing these lovelorn songs. There's an airy, effortless, and unhurried (but not laid-back) quality on Love Comin' Down, likely motivated by recording in the Tragically Hip's cushy home studio, and Foley's performances here take on a bluesy edginess, best exemplified by the acoustic tracks "Let My Tears Fall Down" and the album-closing "How Strong," where she sighs and cries with a unnerving poignancy. As producer, fellow Canadian blues-rocker Colin Linden leaves breathing room for Foley's biting, snakelike guitar and heartfelt vocals, while bolstering the tunes with subtle horns and swampy, understated drums. Lucinda Williams' dramatic vocals are impressive on "Empty Cup," but it's Linden's spine-chilling Dobro and Foley's menacing guitar that stand out. With a rugged and uncompromising style, and a smooth yet earthy and wholly assured approach, Sue Foley dexterously treads the line between commercial and rootsy, and in the process creates her most eclectic -- and best -- album. ~Hal Horowitz

Jam band powerhouse Gov’t Mule is doing its part to perk up everyone’s quarantine by releasing Live At The Beacon Theatre, the first in a series of streaming-only live albums that intend to make the best of live music’s current situation. The set hit the streaming platforms November 27th, 2020 thanks to Evil Teen Records, LLC and captures the Mule throwing down on New Year’s Eve 2017 at the Beacon Theater in New York City with special guest Jackie Green as part of the band’s yearly residency there. The gig was one of those inspired nights every musician lives for and featured classic Mule tracks alongside covers of songs by Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Sam Cooke, Bob Marley, Neil Young, David Bowie, Steely Dan, and others. It’s a particularly good choice to kick off this series of live efforts and captures many superb musical moments.

“While there’s nothing like being in a room with all of you, we wanted to release a series of live recordings to share some of that live electricity that we all miss so much,” said Gov’t Mule front man and Grammy Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, producer, and guitarist Warren Haynes. Of course, Haynes and the rest of the group want to resume their tradition of ringing in each new year onstage at the Beacon as soon as it’s safe and possible to do so. Live At The Beacon Theatre should, however, help a lot of Mule fans ease the live show withdrawal symptoms that are affecting music lovers everywhere this year until that can happen. The band is in top form, the song choices are cool and uplifting, and the crowd is devouring every note.

From the moment the Mule opens the set with “Larger Than Life” from 2010’s Mulennium,the vibes are deep and the energy level is high. Haynes solos like a man on fire from the jump over a heavy-duty rock groove that the crowd instantly responds to. “The Man I Want To Be” changes things up and lets Haynes get deep into some soulful vocals and gorgeously powerful lead guitar playing. His tone is epic, as always, and band members Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals), and Jorgen Carlsson (bass) flex their considerable muscles in response. Gov’t Mule is one of the finest live bands in existence in any genre and the way this bunch locks into each other so intuitively is positively electric. You can practically feel the atmosphere in the room getting charged up.

The Mule’s complete reinvention of Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground” begins with a nod to Johnson’s atmospheric original version from 1927 before morphing into something else entirely. Haynes turns the group into something akin to what Black Sabbath might have been if they came from the American South. Listening to the track is a physically moving experience and shows that GM can rock as hard as anyone. Prepare to be impressed.

Steely Dan’s “Daddy Don’t Live In That New York City No More” brings on another genre shift, this time into a slick, funky, and sophisticated rock sound. The Mule always shows great taste in cover material and they do Becker and Fagen proud with this interpretation. “Revolution” by Dr. John is a driving minor key workout that features Jackie Greene, Shawn Pelton, and The Chronic Horns (Pam Fleming, Jenny Hill, and Sara Jacovino) assisting Haynes and company in sounding even bigger than they normally do. Bob Marley’s “Revolution” also makes an appearance and finds the band locking down on a righteous reggae beat as well as dropping some social commentary. This part of the gig focuses on songs with social and political leanings and includes Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” Buffalo Springfield’s iconic “For What It’s Worth,” and CCR’s always-relevant “Fortunate Son.” Putting all of these songs together in a single set is a bold political statement in our current social climate and the Mule leaves little doubt as to where its members stand.

The encore is filled with jam band favorites including the Allman Brothers’ “Melissa” and “Mountain Jam,” Neil Young’s anthemic “Rockin’ In The Free World,” and ultimate Jimi Hendrix/Band Of Gypsies’ masterpiece “Machine Gun.” Gov’t Mule elevates to a whole different plane on these tracks and takes every person in attendance along for the ride. Haynes’ guitar work is uniformly spectacular across them all and reaffirms his standing as one of the kings of American rock music. Live At The Beacon Theatre captures one perfect night in the life of an amazing group of musicians and reminds us of what’s waiting for us on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic. Joe Barr comes straight from the smoky back rooms of Chicago, where the musical identity of the city. In the ranks of the obscure (and deserving) soldiers who animate, night after night, the urban nights, this pianist and vehement singer resides at the Kingston Mine (famous club in the North of the Windy City) with his Soul Purpose Band. For his part, the young guitarist Breezy Rodio officiates every Tuesday at the Blues Chicago (on Clark Street), within the Linsey Alexander Blues Band. Cultivating a reciprocal admiration (and having already united their talents on stage), these brilliant musicians are now going through the studio, for a common first album with an explicit title.Supported by organist Chris Foreman (of the Blues Organ Trio) at Hammond B3 and a solid vintage brass section, they dispense an irresistible blend of vintage soul, unrolling a panel of golden covers on edges, as well as on a groovy rhythm. infallible. It takes, indeed, the nerve, the trunk and the know-how, to start the festivities by resuming the “Drown In My Own Tears” of the great Ray Charles. And from the outset, Joe's unstoppable performance (both in terms of patter and expressiveness) wins support. His adaptations of the fiery “A Woman Was Made To Be Loved” by Tyrone Davis, as well as those, immaculate, of “Try Me Tonight”, “We Are Getting Careless With Our Love” and “I Believe In You” by Johnny Taylor are a good illustration of the register favored by middle-aged regulars at his headquarters.Foreman's organ works wonders, as does Garland Green's “Jealous Kind Of Fellow” (with early O'Jays-style background vocals), while in the spirit“Less is more”from giants such as Steve Cropper and Jimmy Nolen, Breezy Rodio's guitar operates in the conciseness that befits true spadassins. Carried by brass and a piano with small onions, the sublime “Ain't Nothing You Can Do” by Bobby Bland (already transcended in its time by an ecstatic Van Morrison) here resumes its youthful complexion, by the grace of 'a Joe Barr displaying all the range of his emotions, as well as that of a Breezy Rodio with imperial licks. Concluding with the unstoppable three-of-a-kind of BB King's “To Know You is To Love You” (Rodio shaking himself there as on Beale Street) and the tender “My Latest My Greatest Inspiration” by Teddy Pendergrass and “I Need To Belong (To Someone) ”by one of the tenors of Chicago Soul, Jerry Butler, here is a soul record as unexpected as it is timeless,and as expansive as it is delicately manly. ~Patrick Dallongeville
