Krissy Matthews - Pizza Man Blues

Size: 113.5 MB
Time: 48:26
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2021
Styles: Blues Rock
Art: Full

01. Mayday (4:33)
02. The Man Said No (4:04)
03. Disaster (5:02)
04. Anti-Social Media (6:55)
05. Hairdryin' Drummer Man (4:33)
06. Pizza Man Blues (3:53)
07. Ride (4:45)
08. Carry On (4:17)
09. Grateful (5:47)
10. Grateful Unplugged (Feat. Layla Zoe & Felix Peikli) (4:31)

Pizza Man Blues is a snapshot of the moment those certainties were snatched away. The Blues Boy of Matthews’ 2006 debut album has been around the block, and the genre-crossing songs he now recounts on Pizza Man Blues are written from a place of hard-won maturity. “This last year, we’ve all had to adapt to circumstances,” reflects Matthews. “I’ve been forced off the road, but I’ve tried to keep the engine alive, keep earning, not lose my passion. I’ve done so many jobs, like pizza and flower delivery driver, tree surgeon assistant, volunteering for the NHS. These songs are all about the experiences I’ve had.”

The opening charge of Mayday would make Motörhead’s Lemmy nod approval, serving a feral fuzz lick and a speaker-ratting chorus that asks the big questions. From the bruised organ lines of Can’t Keep Us Apart to the thrilling torn-up guitar tone and Stax-worthy brass on Anti-Social Media, these are songs that defy genre at every turn. “I just wanted a ‘Krissy Matthews’ vibe,” he shrugs. “This album was the result.”

But as the indelible chorus of Grateful fades – ‘You’ve got to be grateful for what you’ve got/even if it ain’t a whole lot’ – it’s that sentiment that resonates. “Being a professional world touring musician, in a pandemic, with a girlfriend in another country, during Brexit, is not ideal,” Matthews considers. “But I’ve still found lots of things to be grateful for and I’m a very lucky man. The only way to get through hard times is to focus on the good times…”

Krissy Matthews - Live At Freak Valley

07. Bad Boy (Live) (7:10)
08. Freedom (Live) (6:36)
09. Hit The Rock (Live) (3:22)
10. Roadsick Blues (Live) (5:22)
11. Bubbles And The Seven Phones (Live) (9:31)

Krissy Mathews lives or dies by the first take and his road tested band do him proud on an album full of tight interplay, scorching solos, raw aggression and a magnificent unexpected finish.

He makes up for a lack of memorable songs and a passable monotone vocal with a set full of raw aggression and searing intensity, captured on what sounds like desk recording

There’s plenty of brute force and swagger here, as evidenced by the opening straight-to- the verse ‘Feeling For The Blues’.

The catchy ‘All Night Long’ evokes early TYA right right down to Alvin Lee style nasal vocal and his fiery fretboard work, on a surprisingly reflective piece for a 24 year old. Krissy takes off at the one minute, 17 seconds mark, as the song goes into overdrive to offset an effective rumbling bass line

He later explores a similar catchy hook on ‘Bad Boy’ as part of an up tempo stomp on which forces his voice into a range he simply doesn’t have. This perhaps explains the echo reverb on the hook.

For the most part, ‘Live At Freak Valley’ is a heavy-duty power trio rock album with occasional blues references. It’s pile driving festival fare full of plank spanking solos over a bone crunching rhythm section, as the band obviously connects with the stoner rock crowd.

When he does reference the blues on Blind Willie McTell’s ‘Searching The Desert For The Blues’, Krissy almost gets caught in the stuttering web of his own exuberance. He wisely falls back on a staccato funky bass line that ushers in a bluesy groove. He tops that with guitar squalls and chicken noises, before his scorching fretwork again lights up the North German festival crowd.

Krissy tells his crowd that ‘The Soul Will Never Die’ is written for and inspired by his meeting with B.B. King, but his phrasing lets him down, though it is counter-weighted by his guitar playing.

He saves his best blues effort for last, with the smouldering, heartfelt intro and climactic resolution of ‘Bubbles And The Seven Phones’. Given the powerhouse nature of the rest of the album, this is almost an exercise in restraint, as it encompasses Sam Weston’s cool bass solo and moves imperiously towards Krissy own climatic solo, ably matched by his best vocal of the album. This track alone makes the album worth purchasing.

He’s also enjoys the riff driven ‘Language By Injection’ which builds a tension that he resolves with a cascading solo. He broadens his palette with the raw urgency of Hendrix’s ‘Freedom’, on which he substitutes bombast for soul to earn a hard big reception from the crowd.

The 3 bonus tracks were recorded at Gerd’s Juke Joint in Joldelund and include the hot picking, harp driven hoedown of ‘Roadsick Blues’ and the outstanding afore mentioned ‘Bubbles And The Seven Phones’.

‘Live At Freak Valley’ is a warts and all album that will hold some appeal to gut bucket guitar driven rock/blues fans, but it’s essentially a stepping stone or perhaps a pit stop for a young rock/blues guitarist still honing his craft. ~by Pete Feenstra

Krissy Matthews - 2 albums: Hit The Rock / Allen In Reverse

It was 1995, Krissy was three years old, and his father Keith Matthews invited him up on stage to strum along to Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman”. This is when the Krissy Matthews story started… Now 22 years old, he keeps bursting from strength to strength in all aspects of his career from his live performances, guitar playing, vocal ability, song writing and reputation as being one of the most promising, individual and unique artists the 21st century has seen.

Krissy received his first electric guitar on his eighth birthday, and for the first two years, his father spent time teaching him songs from Hank Marvin and The Shadows song book. However, at the age of 11 he discovered the blues through a Norwegian artist named Amund Maarud, whilst on a family holiday in Norway. In August 2004 Krissy ended up backstage at a festival show in Norway for the “Godfather of British Blues”, Mr John Mayall. He ended up handing Mr Mayall a little demo, which included the Otis Rush classic “All Your Love” from the Beano album on it. John Mayall then invited Krissy to sit in on that song on the encore. The first night went so well, that Krissy ended up performing two songs with him the following night, resulting in several national radio and press interviews and opportunities to sit in with various top Norwegian acts. The opening act on these two festival shows were the British Blues All Stars featuring Peter Green and Long John Bauldry. Krissy used the same amp as Peter Green. A pretty good milestone for someone of 12 years old. Krissy went back to Norway in October 2004, where he appeared on “God Morgen Norge”, Norway’s national breakfast TV, did a radio session with Knut Reiersrud for “Blues Asylet” on NRK P2, and performed live on stage with Larry Burton (Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, Albert King) in the club “Muddy Waters”, centre of Oslo, which was filmed for national TV.

The CD “Allen in Reverse” was recorded in January 2009 at M.A.R.S Studios with Keith Matthews on Bass, Chris Sharley on Drums, Mike Smith on Keyboards and special guest Holly Petrie on Backing Vocals. In September 2009 “Allen in Reverse” was released on Membran Records, Germany. It received great reviews, and was followed up by numerous shows around the UK and Europe. The famous “Jazzism” magazine in Netherlands said about the record…”A stunning example of innovative blues. Great promise for the future…” By the age of 18, Krissy had recorded and released 3 albums.
