From The Soul is a club format created by the Top Dogs band with the intention to introduce US artists working in the soul blues tradition to Swedish audiences. The idea was to arrange a series of tours, each featuring a new performer backed up by Top Dogs. When considering which artist to ask, we wanted to focus on the vocal performance and a strong stage presence, the working principle being that blues, first and foremost, is about a singer telling a story. We also wanted to emphasize the soul element, to make the band horn-driven rather then guitar-based.

Here is a selection of live recordings from our efforts for your listening pleasure. We hope you will enjoy these great performances by entertainer extraordinaire Johnny "Soul Survivor" Rawls, Tad Robinson - one of the most innovative artists currently working in the field - and, lastly, the epitome of the big-voice blues singer, the great Deitra Farr. /Excerpt from the liner notes

Deitra Farr is considered one of Chicago's top vocalists, according to Living Blues Magazine (May 1997). Fiery, energetic, and soul-stirring describes this woman, who has over the years been nominated for Traditional Female Blues artist of the year by the W.C. Handy Awards, Female Blues Artist of the year by the Living Blues Critics Awards, the British Blues Connection Awards, and the Les Trophees France Blues awards.

This Chicago native began her career in 1975, singing with local soul bands, before starting her blues career in the early 1980’s. When Deitra was 18 years old, she recorded the lead vocals on Mill Street Depo’s record ” You Won’t Support Me “. That record was a Cashbox Top 100 R&B hit in 1976. Over thirty years later, that recording has been re-released and is popular again worldwide. In 1983, Deitra began her blues career working at the major Chicago blues clubs, such as The Kingston Mines, The Wise Fool’s Pub and Blue Chicago. She also toured the US and Canada with the Sam Lay Blues Band. From 1993 to 1996, Deitra was the lead singer with Mississippi Heat, recording two CD’s with this all-star group.

In 1997, Deitra resumed her own solo career, continuing to sing blues, while reaching back to her soul music roots. After recording on eight previous CD projects with others, she recorded her first solo CD, “The Search is Over”, for the London-based JSP records. In 2005, Deitra released her second JSP CD “Let it Go!”.

So is the inspiration from all the band members - Deitra Farr on vocals, and the same musicians as in LEARNED THE HARD WAY (1994). By this time the band was tight and well rehearsed. An exciting set of 14 original tunes!

THUNDER IN MY HEART marks the first time bass man Bob Stroger records his singing voice (a cover tune called "Loan Me Train Fare" with additional lyrics from Bob, and one written for him by Pierre Lacocque called "Don't Dare Call").

Chicago vocalist Deitra Farr is so versatile that it's a misnomer to call her singing soul-blues. She's equally comfortable with ballads, pop music, soul, and blues, and she presents a delightful combination of all these styles on her debut record, The Search Is Over. Farr spent her childhood listening to the radio and the soul music of the late '60s and early '70s. She began singing in the choir at the Catholic grade school she attended, and by the time she was a senior in high school, she was singing with her uncle's band. Farr also sang with another local band for fun, but music was still an avocation for her.

Farr first stepped into the recording studio when she was 18 as a vocalist for Jimmy Mayes' band, Mill Street Depot. The single "You Won't Support Me" got airplay around Chicago and sparked her enthusiasm for a career as a singer. After she graduated from Columbia College (in Chicago) with a degree in journalism, Farr met piano player Erwin Helfer. Helfer had learned from and played with people like Willie Mabon, Little Brother Montgomery, and Sunnyland Slim. Farr began sitting in with Helfer's trio before landing a gig of her own at Kingston Mines in Chicago. She began drawing crowds to her shows, helped in no small measure by the fact that she had legendary names sitting with her, people like Homesick James, Louis Myers, and Sunnyland Slim.

Farr sang on Dave Specter's debut, Bluebird Blues, in 1991, and a Japanese record company, DIW, included her on a compilation of Chicago blues artists called Chicago Blues Nights. She also can be heard on Chicago's Finest Blues Ladies, a compilation for the Wolf Records label, which got her noticed overseas and allowed her to tour in Europe. Farr's career shifted into high gear after she hooked up with the band Mississippi Heat in 1993 and recorded two albums with them, Learned the Hard Way (1993) and Thunder in My Heart (1995). Her debut for the London-based JSP Records, The Search Is Over, produced by guitarist/impresario Johnny Rawls, was released in 1997. Her vocals were smooth and confident, and her songs covered a broad thematic landscape. ~Biography by Richard Skelly
