Dave Weld & The Imperial Flames - Burnin' Love

Dave Weld, approaching sixty, has always been seen as one of the younger guard of electric blues guitarists, his boyish good looks adding fuel to that perception. Of course, he's one of the more seasoned professionals on the bar circuit, and with this recording, he makes his debut for the Delmark label after years on independent labels, his first CD since 1996 in a far-too-thin discography. Weld's Imperial Flames play a mix of contemporary and classic Chicago blues, blues-rock, and songs associated with ex-mentor J.B. Hutto, and Hutto's nephew Lil' Ed Williams. Vocalist Monica Myhre also contributes songs, sings lead on two, and backup for the rest, while drummer/vocalist Jeff Taylor, or the sweet-and-sour tenor sax of veteran Abb Locke are also heard in extensia. Weld's individual playing is spare but substantive, with just that right amount of edge that suggests he's in business.

The tune for his mother, "Donnie Lee", is typically slow, but soulful in that it reflects the pain of trials and tribulations she endured while battling a major illnesses. It is in the patient pace and gently unfolding blues, especially on "Things Are so Slow" where Weld is at his best. This is not to say the band won't rock out, for they do on songs like the funky title track and the much faster "Talk Dirty" (not a cover of Poison/Brett Michaels rock anthem) featuring Myhre. It's in their warmer moments - during the shuffle "Sweet Shiny Brown Eyes," or Myhre's tribute to her mother, "Listen to Mama", that the blue-eyed soul of the band is more prevalent. Lil' Ed contributes rhythm guitar throughout, and offers up some slide and vocals on the exciting "Ed's Boogie". Overall, this long overdue effort from Dave Weld shows what Chicagoans and blues fans have known all along: that this top-notch band deserves much wider recognition. /Michael G. Nastos, AllMusic

And the cover shows the direction want to go to Medina Rekic and Hansjörg Loferer with their music: full speed ahead. Although the duel as not quite right, because the two rather form a strong team. Rekic, which is a strong rock guitarist for many years, on the album are all she has. And Loferer pretty pure skin on drums.

The result is the thrilling vibes that are the key to the title of the disc for the band. It ultimately is not a matter that the White Miles fight each other, but the fact that they are working together on a grueling thing. And what they call their genre, namely fits quite well with its setting. "Dirty Poledance Stoner Blues Rock" is the self-created genre. And in their stuck some elements in there that you can also clear out on the album.

For example Stoner Rock. This genre comes from the blues rock - to include the White Miles also to her repertoire - and has continued to develop especially with the grunge-1990. It sounded very deeply tuned guitars, often followed by a not regulated song structure. The White Miles interpret this style, for example, on the song "Insane to the Bone" or "Heid". In the latter a deep guitar melody and the voice Loferers who does not sing but speaks dominate. "Insane to the Bone" also lives by the very low-tuned guitars and the seemingly chaotic melody.

Looking every inch the bluesman, his broad smile reveals two gold teeth adorned with raised gold letters "JP," followed by a star. He surveys the crowd, playfully demanding to know if "everyone is alright" and "are we gonna have a good time tonight?" Yeeaahh!! James Peterson, with his own hotter-than-a-firecracker combination of playing and singing the blues, definitely knows how to have a good time.
A native of Russel County, Alabama, Peterson was born in 1937 to a farming family. His first lessons in the blues came from the wonderful sounds drifting out of the little juke joint run by his father. It was these sounds that filled the air late into the night. He bought his first guitar at age fifteen, and after teaching himself how to play, took the route many before him had chosen. He headed north to Chicago, where he began singing with John Scott's band.

In 1965, Peterson opened "The Governor's Inn, House of Blues," in Buffalo, New York. This allowed him to pursue his love of the blues, while keeping his family close to him. His band served as the house band, backing such blues luminaries as Howlin' Wolf, Big Joe Turner, and Freddie King, Koko Taylor and Lowell Fulson. Peterson's first album, "The Father, Song and the Blues," produced and co-written with the legendary Willie Dixon, also featured his then five year old son, blues great Lucky Peterson. Three more albums followed on various record labels, all serving as stepping stones to number five. Destined to propel James Peterson further into the blues spotlight, "Don't Let The Devil Ride," is his first release on Waldoxy Records.

This record actually started out as more of a private project with a few old musician friends to just record a few tunes for fun and mostly more for me… I used to be a harp player but can no longer play so to compensate I took up the bass, of which I’m very average at best but I love to play… and equally important I’ve always been committed and passionate about the blues in all its various forms… I connected with Carl Q and asked him if he would be interested in helping out and pulling some musicians together to record, which in many ways was serendipitous as in the process it meant being able to reconnect with a number of old friends who I had not seen in some cases for over 35 years so that in of itself would make the whole project worth while. Then serendipity played a part again when folks suggested that, if we’re getting together to do this doesn’t it make sense to record a full album… all I can say is, this was a dream come true for me and as nervous as I was, this being my first recording, I was equally excited to have the opportunity to play with all these amazing musicians and thankful they were willing to make the time to make this project real… The last thing worth noting I guess, is the very different path I chose compared to the band. At one point early in life I had to make a decision on what I wanted to do with my life. There was the dual tug’s of music and sport… Being a very competitive individual I think in a way the die was cast for me but in the end it was absolutely the right choice and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to travel the road I’m still on… So if my bio feels a bit different you’ll know why. Finally I want, from the bottom of my heart, to thank all the musicians and engineers who lent their immense talent to this album, and for being patient and great teachers along the way. I’m a far better musician than when I started… and my passion to get better and play more has been ignited! So for me I dedicate this album to the memory of all the blues greats who continue to inspire me and all the generations that have followed through their raw, honest, inspiring and passionate American music…

I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it! ~(band)

Each tune (is) a kind of short story with a form, character, and message of its own. This collection is a generous 60+ minutes of the best of McDowell's work. If you're looking for the definitive McDowell CD, this is it. ~Lawrence Hoffman

Fred's mentor Eli Green is heard on "Brooks Run Into the Ocean" and " Bull Dog Blues." Recorded in 1964 & 1965. (All of ARH LP 1021 & most of 1027.) Includes the version of "You Gotta Move" heard and then recorded by the Rolling Stones on their "Sticky Fingers" album.

Slaughterhouse Blues started in the spring of 2002 and was formed by accident at the Blues Society of Central PA’s blues jam at the Lochiel hotel. At the Lochiel “jammers” sign a list and are then called to the stage in the order that they have signed up. The five original members of Slaughterhouse Blues jammed for the first time as a group at the Lochiel. After our four song set it was evident that a band was formed. Within days we started practicing weekly and quickly began gigging. In the beginning Slaughterhouse Blues had a two-guitar attack. Unfortunately Dan Mowery, one of our original guitar players, soon after relocated to Florida to go to recording school. We have been a four-piece band since his departure.

The heart of Slaughterhouse Blues is its rhythm section. Blaine Weisser on bass guitar and Tom Dawes on drums. Blaine and Tom started playing together in their first band while in high school. They have been playing together on and off for over 30 years now and have finally produced their first recording together with the release of our new self-titled CD. Jason Suter, who has been playing locally for that past 6 or 7 years, handles the guitar responsibilities in the band. Tony “T-Bone” Formica, who has sung for many area bands, fronts the band. All members of Slaughterhouse Blues have played in many other successful local bands. However, this band provides everyone an opportunity to play the music they love.

For our live shows Slaughterhouse often bills the band as a “blues influenced jam band”. We do this as to not mislead people into thinking this is a traditional Chicago, Delta, or other type of traditional blues band. This is the Slaughterhouse Blues, we like to jam, and we like to play music in a way that we find enjoyable. It is very important to us that our audiences enjoy our music and that we enjoy playing it. That being said, Slaughterhouse Blues has the highest amount of respect for the blues tradition. We study the founders of the music and hold in high regard those that are continually trying to preserve this wonderful art form.

In the winter of 2006 Slaughterhouse Blues recorded and released our second CD entitled Evil Skies. We are very proud of this effort and hope all who listen enjoy it as much as we did recording it. We hope that this recording will open new doors for us and help us take our music to a larger fan base that appreciates what we are doing.

Dusty Road, the debut album by the Brothers Brown, unveils a dynamic new presence in American roots music. It’s dozen songs—buoyed by a superb level of songwriting and musicianship—recall the work of such seminal groups as the Band and Creedence Clearwater Revival in their ability to create a sense of place and time, or, rather, timelessness, as well as emotional depth. This new union of four powerful writers, players and producers from Nashville and Los Angeles also has a similar ensemble approach, with multiple vocalists and uncanny interplay.

The Brothers Brown are fronted by two musicians named Paul Brown. One is a double Grammy winning producer, guitarist, singer and songwriter from Los Angeles. The other is a Grammy nominated producer, keyboardist and songwriter based in Nashville. The band is completed by a virtuosic rhythm section that also calls Nashville home: bassist David Santos, who has worked with Billy Joel, Elton John, John Fogerty and other superstars; and drummer Peter Young, who has toured with Loretta Lynn, Burrito Brothers and other major artists. Santos and Young are also accomplished producers.

The formidable sound they create together makes Dusty Road a unique and thrilling listening experience. From its opening burst of Latin percussion and guitarist Brown’s gently pealing, precisely phrased licks, the title track evokes images of desert highways and backwater motels rooms, of ashtrays overflowing with cigarette butts next to whiskey-stained glasses—projecting a sense of loneliness limned by proud resignation. This artful character study comes together over a life-giving, back-of-the-pocket groove.

Blue By Nature - Live At The Lake (2 CD)

Blue By Nature is yet another fine blues band based in California. "Live at the Lake" is a two disc set, featuring the band in a live setting. The performance ranges in mood from from energetic and upbeat blues-rock and funk to slower blues and R&B flavored ballads, as the band works through a set consisting entirely of original songs.

The five member band is fronted by singer/songwriter Karen Lawrence, who's excellent vocals are distinctive, hard-hitting and emotional. There's a definite sense that she connects with her audience. Although fronted by Lawrence, the band has a very strong guitar presence as well. There's a generous amount of excellent guitar playing laid down throughout the two discs.

Calling this retrospective by Charlie Musselwhite a "deluxe edition" may be a little misleading. Twelve of the album's 14 tracks come from three albums he recorded for Alligator in the early '90s. There are four each from Ace of Harps (1990), Signature (1991), and In My Time (1993). The sequencing is beautifully done and representative. The true curiosities are two unissued cuts. The first is "Lotsa Poppa," an outtake from the In My Time sessions. The cut itself isn't such a revelation, but Musselwhite's harp playing and singing is. His delivery is signature in that he is always slow and relaxed yet just underneath. There in the grain of his voice is something else, something that smolders. The final cut here is from Musselwhite's private collection of tapes and it was recorded at home in the early '60s. It features the legendary Will Shade instructing a very young Musselwhite on guitar and singing with him. It's ragged but moving and poetic. This is priceless archival blues history and is a fine bookend. Hopefully this will inspire the bluesman to find a venue to release more of his personal archives in the future. ~Thom Jurek

Lady Bianca (AKA Bianca Thornton) is a dynamic and talented singer. With this, her seventh album, we get to hear her and her band deep into soul and the blues. Her vocals are expressive and range from soft and sultry to big and powerful. Her backing band is tight and focused, making each cut a nice little package of soulful blues goodness. 10 of the 11 cuts are Bianca's own originals, and she has done a great job with them.

The title of the CD indicates that Lady B is serving notice that she is here, on the scene and is a force to be reckoned with. It's all good stuff. If I had to offer some sort of criticism it would be to have Lady Bianca let it all hang out more. I would like to see her go out and blast away; she's got the vocal prowess to do so and it would really be impressive to here her in that mode. Accompanying Bianca are Steve Gannon on guitar, Carl Green on sax for two cuts, Dave K. Matthews on organ, Michael Skinner on drums/percussion, Oshim O. Oden on bass, and Tovia Bradley on drums for the opening cut. Stanley Lipett join Bianca for the vocal duet on "It Hurts To Be In Love". ~Steve Jones

Finland's gift to rock 'n' roll madness.

Nick Curran's Player! album features more of the retro-R&B that helped nab him the 2004 W.C. Handy Award for Best New Artist Debut. Once again, guitarist/vocalist Curran, drummer Damien Llanes, and bassist Preston Hubbard deliver an impressive old-school blues album that should catch newcomers off guard as well as please longtime fans. Showcasing a slightly harder edge à la Bee Houston, Player! flows nicely between uptempo shouters, slow and dirty ballads, and swing numbers. To these ends, Curran rips into the Little Richard speedball "Heeby Jeebies", does what he did for the Sonics' "Shot Down" to the Stooges' "No Fun", and outshouts Wynonie Harris on "Down Boy Down".

It's Curran's originals, though, that usually make the biggest impression, and on that score Player! features some of his best. Notably, the title track is a rambunctious ass-mover that sticks in your ear and "Come Back" features Curran crooning against string backgrounds. Similarly, "Leavin'" is a slow shuffle with a nice twangy melody and "The Groovy Jam" finds Curran delving into Tiny Grimes-style rockin' swing with devastating charm. One of Curran's most diverse albums to date, Player! also features stellar performances by harmonica player Kim Wilson, guitarist David Leroy Biller, saxophonists John Doyle and Paul Klemperer, and Roomful of Blues' Providence Horns. /Matt Collar, AllMusic

Chad Strentz is one of the hardest working frontmen in the British blues scene, and you may be familiar with his work with Paul Lamb and the King Snakes, who has earned numerous British Blues Awards, including UK’s Best Blues Band. He has music deep down in his soul, having started playing guitar and singing in his early teens while taking inspiration from all the right artists: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Big Boy Crudup, and Bo Diddley, to name just a few. After gaining a firm foundation in rockabilly, he dove deep into the blues that he practices each day, both with the King Snakes and his own band, the Chad-illacs.

After decades of touring and recording, it is amazing that Chad had not cut a disc of his own before now. Shake-Down is Strentz’s debut album, and it was recorded in only three days at drummer/producer Mike Thorne’s Rimshot Studios in the English countryside. Chad and Mike were joined by a group of excellent musicians from all over Europe, including Jim Leverton on electric bass, Pete Pritchard on double bass, Christian Rannenberg on piano, and Raphael Wressnig on the Hammond C-3. Jimmy Reiter and Kai Strauss shared electric guitar duties and British acoustic blues guitar giant Danny Kyle sat in on this session as well, which is a real treat!

The idea behind Ruff Kutt Blues and the making of "Mill Block Blues" belongs to James Goode (Bass) and as such he also wrote all the songs on the album, except for one which he co-wrote with Michael Schaefer, whom also does Vocals on a few of the songs. One of the more notable artists on "Mill Block Blues" is Anson Funderburgh, a Texas Blues Guitar Legend with an amazing 9 Handy Awards, already under his belt. Beyond laying down some mean Guitar licks on this album, Anson helped Arrange, as well as Produced "Mill Block Blues". Of the 13 Tracks on "Mill Block Blues", Anson was featured on 10 of them. The other great musicians and artists on this album included Gentleman John Street (Keys), Forresr Wesley Starr (Drums), Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones (Vocals), Dempsey Chrenshaw (Vocals/Harmonica), Christian Dozzler (Accordion), Hash Brown (Harmonica), Ron Jones (Sax), Don Cates (Rhythm Guitar), Steven Richardson (Drums/Vocals), Shurhonda Kemp (Vocals), and Kenny Daniel (Vocals). All of the artists on "Mill Block Blues" have amazing bio's which one easily finds written in the cover booklet.

"Mill Block Blues" is essentially a tribute album to those whom "lived on the Cotton Mill block" in the small town of McKinney in North Texas, through the 50's and 60's. James Goode stresses the fact that that area was not a ghetto, but in fact was a "large housing area of really good people that worked hard for their money." "Mill Block Blues" offers us 13 Tracks which deal with the tough times and sometimes really tough times a lot of those workers had to endure, and essentially offers us all a rare glimpse into an important part of American history. ~John Vermilyea

Various Artists - Mississippi Saxophone: The Great Blues Harmonica Players (2 CD)

Offering a wide range of sounds in a small, inexpensive, novice-friendly package, the harmonica played a key role in the development of the blues, a sound that continues to resonate in the modern blues world. The compilation Mississippi Saxophone: The Great Blues Harmonica Players reviews this history, covering artists who helped define the harmonica blues sound as well as those who continue its legacy.

Taking a dual-minded approach, the collection focuses on artists known for their techniques - Big Walter Horton's colorful solos, Sonny Boy Williamson II's warble-like hand effects, Little Walter's punchy amplified sounds - while traveling from the title state (Charlie Musselwhite) to Chicago (James Cotton) and across the pond to the U.K. (Giles Robson). /Chrysta Cherrie, AllMusic

Today, blues and R&B music are no longer the preserve of working class African Americans and, although the city of Memphis itself has changed, the influence of its legendary performers can be heard in the recordings on this cd. The selections here, taken from the current generation of blues and R&B artists, represent the best of the new era of Memphis Music.

Although they are continuing the traditions of artists such as B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson, these artists sing new songs with new voices; however, the intertwined threads of anguish and joy, agony and celebration are still present, as they in the primitive blues that W.C. Handy heard down on Beale Street all those years ago. /Excerpt from the liner notes

Solid album. Not a weak song in the bunch. Trower's voice is strong and his playing is... well, he's freaking Robin Trower isn't he? No one else has that touch, his tone or mastery of the style he's created. While the tone of this album starts off a little darker than his last couple of albums, the track selection unfolds nicely with plenty of that wonderful Trower funk/blues/rock thing he does better than anyone. One of those albums where the second listen is better than the first.

I grew up with my grandparents in a small town called Osteen, just outside of Orlando, Florida. My Grandma always told me “What God has for you is for you!” I guess she was right. You see, it was never my dream to be a singer. I never envisioned myself on stage with my name in lights. All I wanted was the American Dream; a house, a family, a white picket fence and a hypoallergenic dog.

But I guess He had a different plan. So, I began this journey over ten years ago. After singing in various venues throughout the region, my career was catapulted when I was selected as the lead singer for B.B. King’s Blues Club in Orlando. Latvian Blues Band - 2 albums: Music Of My Heart / Live At Dream Factory

The roots of the Latvian Blues Band (LBB) go back to year 1997, when three young Latvian guys in Rīga, Latvia decided to form a band. They started out by listening to different blues masters, such as Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf and Little Walter. While working hard on their blues skills, LBB received first local and international recognition by participating in several music festivals in Latvia and Lithuania.

In the beginning of 2000, Johnny V, a well known Canadian blues player, came to Rīga to record his CD "Blues Party" together with LBB. Johnny V also helped LBB to find their way to Canada, where they participated in several blues festivals ("Blues Fest International", Windsor and London, "South Country Fair", Fort Macleod) and played in different blues clubs, e.g. "Silver Dollar Room" in Toronto. Just before their trip to Canada, LBB went to Lithuania to participate in the international blues festival "Bliuzo Naktys" ("Blues Nights"), where they’ve played as head-liners every year, starting from 1998.

LBB has also had the pleasure to play the opening shows for Joe Cocker (Rīga, 2002), Coco Montoya (Vilnius, 2003), and Victor Bailey Band (Riga, 2003); they have been on tours in Croatia ("Century of Blues" Festival, Zagreb, 2004), Greece (Athens - "Euro Jazz 2004", Thessaloniki, Preveza), Poland (Suwalki, 2003, 2005), Lithuania (with Keith Dunn, 2005), and Spain (Madrid, 2006).

Koko Taylor was one of very few women who found success in the male-dominated blues world. She took her music from the tiny clubs of Chicago’s South Side to concert halls and major festivals all over the world. She shared stages with every major blues star, including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King, Junior Wells and Buddy Guy as well as rock icons Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.

Taylor’s final performance was on May 7, 2009 in Memphis at the Blues Music Awards, where she sang “Wang Dang Doodle” after receiving her award for Traditional Blues Female Artist Of The Year.

Billy Hamilton & The Lowriders - 2 albums: Pay Some Money / Campesino Blues

Through the late 60s and early 70s, he fronted various rock cover bands in the Cincinnati area. From 1973 to ’76, he attended the University of Cincinnati, where he earned degrees in English Literature and Education. He worked outside music in the late 70s, when the popularity of “disco” clubs made work for live bands scarce. In early 1980s, he formed Derriere, a rock/pop band that was very popular in the Cincinnati-Dayton area. With this group, Coleman recorded his first 45-rpm single in 1982. The “A” side was a cover version of the Beau Brummels’ hit “Just a Little,” while the “B” side featured one of Coleman’s early compositions, “Give It Hell.”

In ‘85, Bill Coleman moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he stumbled onto radio station WQBH-AM and began listening exclusively to the blues and R&B records spun live at local clubs by DJ Jay Butler. Feeling that he had found his proper musical niche, Coleman became a student of the blues. “Since that time, I’ve played primarily blues, soul, and funky R&B,” he says.

In 1987, Coleman adopted the stage name “Billy Hamilton” and set out for London, England, where the Billy Hamilton Band played ’60s soul and R&B in local pubs. They recorded a few demos, which they shopped around to British labels. But the record companies at that time were more interested in “image” bands like A Flock of Seagulls or Milli Vanilli. “They told us we were good,” says Hamilton, “maybe ‘too good.’”

Armed with these recordings and 40 years of experience, Billy Hamilton left America in January of 2006 to pursue his career in Europe. Over the next four years, he completed 12 successful tours of Central Europe, with dates in Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, and recorded another live CD--"Live at Club Hades" (2007). Meanwhile, the "Campesino Blues" CD has received radioairplay in the UK, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Argentina, India, Denmark, Brazil, and the U.S. The title track and four others are featured in "Purgatory Comics," a 2008 film produced by Warm Milk Productions in New York City.

While in Europe, Hamilton wrote three CDs’ worth of new material (mostly funky blues/soul, but with a little jazz and even some country mixed in). In January of 2011, he relocated to Austin, Texas, USA, where he was signed by AMI records, a small, independent label that will re-release "Campesino Blues" (with the addition of three live tracks recorded in Lublin, Poland and Austin, TX) at the end of 2011. Meanwhile, Hamilton's latest Lowriders lineup is playing club dates and showcases in Central Texas.

There are a very few people who can fill the world with an overwhelming spirit of stand-up soul just by walking into a room. When they're vertical and making their way forward, waves emanate off them in an unabashed generosity of groove, spreading a gracious glow wherever they go. The world is a better place for their there-ness. Jonathan Foose has always had that aura, and it continues now into his seventh decade running the streets and grabbing the beat. Lucky for listeners, he's now put it all down into his bodacious songs.

Foose grew up in the Mississippi Delta in a compound called Pluto (where else?) within dancing distance of Yazoo City. Once the young man busted loose, it was all over but the shouting. Foose did stints in the Navy in the Vietnam War and Ole Miss at Oxford during the life-changing '60s, not to mention those weird and wild years in New Orleans' French Quarter (hello Wanda's on Iberville!) and all over Austin through it all. He heard the sonic calling of musical shapes and styles, and blended them into his own breathing being. The tall man's been chasing those sounds ever since. Finally making his album debut, Jonathan Foose has saved the best for now. These are songs that amplify life and love in a way others may attempt but can never achieve. "Evening Clothes," "Grandma's Wedding Ring," Patent Leather Pickup," "Drunk Before the Party," "Snowing in Nashville:" those are just for starters. Ten blissful tracks, astutely accompanied and amplified by the Gold Magnolias and other studio hard hitters, live now, never heard before. It's the beauty of one man's twinkling heart and how he's found a way to share it with the planet. ~Bill Bentley
