Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and Gibson brand ambassador Jared James Nichols has announced his self-titled new album, features the new single “Down The Drain” as well as the previously released “Hard Wired.” The forthcoming collection showcases every side of the Nashville-based multi-talent and the various genres he grew up listening to, whether it was grunge or blues, that have influenced his authentic sound. Jared James Nichols is available now to pre-save or pre-add on all digital music platforms and pre-order on CD.

“I made a record to serve as the menu for the live show,” Nichols shares. “There’s an element of excitement and danger. It’s my version of rock ‘n’ roll with a little more humanity. The album is a day in the life with the ups and downs, but it musically rings true to who I am as an artist. I’m not trying to be anybody but myself and play the music I love for today. I’m giving you loud ass gui-tars and no fucks given rock ‘n’ roll, and I’m loving it.”

Ahead of today’s official album announcement, Nichols released the lead single “Down The Drain” in late October. The hard-hitting track has already been praised by Guitar World and Loudwire, among others, and has been featured across DSP playlists with placements on Tidal’s Guitar Gods (as the cover artist) and Rising: Indie/Rock, Spotify’s Modern Blues Rock, and Apple Music’s New In Rock and Breaking Hard Rock.

Jared James Nichols was produced, engineered, and mixed by Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Slash, Rival Sons) and recorded live in the studio at Blackbird Studios and Sienna Studios, reflecting the spirit of his electrifying live show on tape like never before. The recording sessions occurred at a pivotal moment for Nichols, who almost never performed again as he had been sidelined only a few months earlier with a broken arm. After surgery, which left him with a plate and 16 screws in his right arm, he pushed himself with diligence and determination to regain use of his arm and his storied guitar proficiency. Nichols soon paved the way for the record with the hypnotic and hyper-charged “Hard Wired,” released in the spring of 2022. Born from a jam session with Tyler Bryant and Graham Whitford, the single bulldozed a path for Jared James Nichols with no short-age of raw and raucous six-string bravado. From the jump, the album kicks into high gear with the bluesy wallop of “My Delusion.”

Elsewhere on the 12-track collection is the Black Sabbath-inspired “Hallelujah,” where a flurry of drums gives way to a thick and heavy battering ram of a blues riff only to crash into a rickety bass line and atomic shredding, and the party homage “Good Time Girl.” Jared James Nichols culminates on the emotionally charged “Out Of Time,” his heartfelt and tearful tribute to his late father. See below for full track listing.

With nothing more than a Gibson Les Paul slung over his shoulder, a warm amp turned all the way up, and a hot microphone on and ready, Jared James Nichols churns out the kind of rock that rips, roars, and rolls without filter or apology. Nichols, who stands at a staggering 6 foot 5 inches tall, delivers a one-two punch of gritty vocals straight from the gut and incendiary fret fireworks. Jared first emerged onto the scene in 2015 with his debut Old Glory & The Wild Re-vival and followed that up with Black Magic in 2018, which yielded the fan favorite “Honey For-give Me.” More recently, he issued the Shadow Dancer EP (2021) and collaborated earlier this year with both Maggie Rose and Joe Bonamassa for revised versions of his song “Threw Me To The Wolves.” Gibson also formally welcomed Nichols as an official ambassador, plotting the release of several signature Jared James Nichols guitars. Since his debut, Nichols has racked up millions of streams and critical acclaim and, in between show-stopping solo shows, has per-formed alongside icons such as Slash, Billy Gibbons, Zakk Wylde, and even the late Leslie West, to name a few. Guitar World has attested, “If you’ve never witnessed Jared James Nichols onstage, let us say right now: you’re missing out, big time.” By keeping it simple, Jared remains primed to leave his imprint on rock ‘n’ roll forever.

Black Magic is an album as exuberant as its creator: it’s spunky, bouncy and about 10 other adjectives that can be used to indicate energy and enthusiasm. Of course, there’s also a guitarist with serious chops behind the microphone, so that helps. Set for release on October 27 via Listenable Records, Black Magic (produced by Tony Perry) will be Jared James Nichols’ second album, a reinforcement of what Nichols established on his 2015 debut Old Glory & the Wild Revival: he enjoys playing loud, hard and wild rock ’n roll–and he’s good at it, too.

Having never seen Nichols perform live, I get the sense from this album (and from general Googling) that the energy on songs like “The Gun” and first single “Last Chance” gets magnified onstage–after all, this is an artist who’d already performed at more than 500 concerts by the time he was 21 (in the seven years since, he’s performed at hundreds more). There are moments on the record–“Last Chance” is a perfect example–when it sounds like Nichols time warped from the 1980s, still fueling the screams and axe virtuosity of (and this is not a diss) some of that decade’s better hair metal bands. (Might Nichols be a fan of Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach? Hmm…) Though the album is marked by touchstones from rock’s evolution over time, Nichols has made it clear that he’s trying to bring his own interpretation of the blues and rock into his music. “I didn’t grow up I the ‘70s, I wasn’t there for that,” Nichols told our own Rory Auskerry during a recent episode of Route 66: One for the Road. “This is my interpretation. This is the way I feel this genre could go.”

Black Magic’s second of 10 tracks, “The Gun,” shows Nichols’ thoughts in action. The first song written for Black Magic, “The Gun” shifts between haunting and heavy tones and is peppered with hints of blue notes and bluesy lyrics (“The river deep / the mountain high / The rain is coming / Gonna fall from the sky”). This is a stark difference from Nichols’ initial visualization of the song. “That was originally a Delta blues, slide guitar song,” he told Auskerry. “I just didn’t want to do that. I said, ‘That’s been done to death so many times; what can I bring that’s new to that?’ So that’s how it turned into this big raging bull of a song, with the huge drums.”

Big sound, big drums, big ambition. The album has a hefty sound that’s full and purposeful, which is why Black Magic is fun to listen to. The album has few moments where the enormity of its sound takes a back seat to more delicately delivered notes–but that’s okay, because Nichols sounds best when he’s going all out. “I always say that we need to keep pushing forward and trying new things,” Nichols told Auskerry. “Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t–but the interpretation? We have to keep that real.” ~by Meghan Roos

Wisconsin-born Nichols first picked up a guitar at the age of 14, practising for 12 hours a day as a teenager, and by the age of 21 he had played more than 500 gigs. He added a number of Musicians Institute honours to his CV, including winning the 2010 Jerry Horton competition and 2011’s Les Paul Tribute and Outsanding Guitarist titles. He met his two-man rhythm section, both Swedes, on the day he arrived in Los Angeles and released his debut Live At The Viper Room EP in 2012. Nichols has also recorded with Hendrix studio engineer Eddie Kramer – another great learning experience for the 26-year-old – and has opened for ZZ Top.

Playing through a cranked-up Blackstar, with no pedals and no pick, Nichols makes a virtue of his rawness. It’s a long way from the days when his mother used to drive him to jam sessions, but he’s eager to make his mark in a highly competitive field.

Jared James Nichols brings his EP into full swing for his first full length album of the same name, Old Glory and the Wild Revival. The old glory harkens back to his roots, while the wild revival is the energy and passion given to an everlasting genre. His classic rock roots and soulful blues give the feel that these tracks were cut long before his time. The album is well worth a listen for all blues fans alike.

Jared brings tasteful progressions and catchy riffs to each track on the album. “Blackfoot” and “Can You Feel It” were infectious tunes brought over from the EP. “Can You Feel It” and “Get Down” both boast a happy-go-lucky riff and lyrics you can find yourself singing along with. “Sometimes” offers a Southern rock twang. “Playin’ For Keeps” is a non-stop thrill ride of solos and rollicking guitar licks, with constant tempo changes that keep you on your toes. Jared is a very talented lyricist, vocalist and lead guitar. He and his band will continue on to bigger and better things as his audible gold reaches the masses.
