Gaye Adegbalola serves up topical blues for topical times. Like the storytelling griots of West Africa, she is the living archive of oral history, the seed-sower, the now-knower, the entertainer, the unchainer. In song stories like (You're) Flint Water and I've been Kaepernicked! THE GRIOT tackles themes of hypocrisy, sexism, poverty, pollution, love, vanity, freedom and betrayal, all wrapped in Gaye's trademark wit and wisdom. Gaye has performed all over the world individually, in duos and bands, and as a founding member of the group Saffire The Uppity Blues Women, who ended their glorious 25-year run in 2009. She is a mother, a Blues Music Award (BMA) winner and former Virginia State Teacher of the Year. Now 74, she sees her life's work as a contemporary griot - keeping the history alive, delivering messages of empowerment, and finding joy in the mundane.

With Bitter Sweet Blues, Gaye Adegbalola has produced an album that starts off where her work with Saffire the Uppity Blues Women left off, and jumps into a new, adventurous space. An expanded cast of musicians and more personal lyrics are some of the benefits to going solo, and Adegbalola makes use of both well. Each song has either humor or power, sometimes both. The only thing that seems incongruous is the mixture of songs with wildly varying moods and topics. While satirical woman-power songs like "Big Ovaries" are empowering and funny, when paired with "Nightmare" -- a powerful, personal song about child molestation -- the effect is somewhat gross. The feminist politics of both songs mesh rather well, but it is difficult for the listener to shift from laughing at bawdy sexuality to somber empathy in just a few tracks. Overall, though, this is a fine first solo effort that resonates with spirit and emotion. ~Review by Stacia Proefrock

If American music is unique, it is largely due to its bedrock foundation of blues and gospel music, two forms of music that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th century. Anchoring the sounds of African America, these styles underlay the musical innovations of the century: jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, soul and hip hop. They are known and cherished around the world and in every corner of the U.S. It would be impossible to imagine American music without them. ~Charles McGovern

Songs of prison and captivity shaped what we have come to know as the blues. Angela Davis suggests that imprisonment was a central theme in blues music. This is borne out over and over. One of my favorite musicians, the great John Lee Hooker (who Bonnie Rait re-introduced to the mainstream in the 1990s) recorded his version of Prison Bound in 1949. In the song, he tackles the important ideas of the separation from loved ones and the sense of abandonment that can come from being incarcerated.

When they had my trial, baby
You know you couldn’t be found
When they had my trial
Baby, you could not be found
But it’s too late to cry, baby
Your daddy’s prison bound
