02. Crazy 'Bout You, Baby (4:06)
03. I'm Still In Love With You (4:16)
04. One More Heartache (3:58)

10. You Haven't Hurt Me (3:35)
11. Two Steps From The Blues (3:00)
12. I'm On Your Tail (4:03)

The comparisons to Aretha Franklin are inevitable, but Juanita Williams' voice and passion are her own. Her debut, Introducing Juanita Williams, features a wide-ranging sample of modern and classic blues tunes, everything from Ike and Tina Turner's "Crazy About You Baby" to Freddie King's "That Will Never Do" and Bobby Bland's "Two Steps from the Blues." Anybody who has doubts about the future of women blues vocalists should pick up Williams' impressive debut. ~Richard Skelly

CD 2: Eric Shoutin' Sheridan & The Uptown Rhythm Kings - Live Show (1996)
01. Good Lovin (2:32)
02. Crawfishin (2:44)
03. Kept On Sittin On It (5:52)
04. Mr Watch Chain (2:57)
05. Do Just What I Want (2:30)

11. Natural Ball (3:42)
12. Open Up The Back Door (3:31)
13. Boogie Woogie King (2:43)
14. Don't Blow Up (3:55)

Led by the irrepressible Eric Sheridan, a tall, striking bundle of energy whose musical tastes and shouting vocals reflect his idol Wynonie Harris, the Uptown Rhythm Kings have survived numerous personnel changes since their founding in the mid-1980s to remain one of the premier jump-blues bands in the mid-Atlantic region. With a four-piece horn section, their sound is a throwback to the honkers and shouters of the late 40s-early 50s, when big band jazz gave birth to rhythm & blues. Bands from that era, however, used to vary the pace, cooling down the crowd with slow ballads. These are absent from the playbook of the Uptown Rhythm Kings; they might aptly be termed the Uptempo Rhythm Kings. This CD was recorded live in 1995 at a fancy but ill-fated nightclub Mick Fleetwood briefly operated in Alexandria, Virginia, just across the Potomac from the Kings' Washington DC home base. ~Steve Hoffman

CD 3: Odetta - To Ella (1993)
01. Black Woman ( 3:10)
02. The Fox ( 2:44)
03. Suite: Ancestors 1 (27:55)
04. Ol' Lady Sally ( 1:03)
05. Amazing Grace ( 2:06)

Although To Ella is dedicated to Ella Fitzgerald (who died in 1996), it isn't actually a tribute to the influential jazz singer. Nor does it find Odetta moving into jazz territory. Rather, this excellent CD is an example of Odetta doing what she does best: acoustic, storytelling folk that is influenced by African-American spirituals as well as rural blues. Odetta had been recording for over 40 years when To Ella was recorded at the Kerrville Folk Festival in the late '90s, and the veteran folk artist sings with as much conviction as ever on such moving performances as "Black Woman," "Ol' Lady Sally," and "900 Miles" (which is part of a 27-minute suite that also includes "Red Clay Country," "Shenandoah," and several other songs). Those who have been following Odetta for decades will be glad to hear how well her voice has held up over the years -- without a doubt, her range was still as impressive as ever. ~Alex Henderson

These three long-plays are widely regarded as landmarks of the late-’50s folk & blues revival. They have been remastered and packaged together in this very special collector’s edition, which also includes 10 bonus tracks from the same period.

The blues great Jimmy Witherspoon had recorded on numerous occasions with Holmes, and on this occasion is joined by folk legend Odetta on the track "Lonesome Road Blues". The session features versions of several blues standards composed by Percy Mayfield as well as new versions of Holmes biggest hits "Misty" and "Onsaya Joy". Recorded in New York City, February 28 and March 1, 1991.

Despite what legend and lore may tell you, the blues did not originate in the Delta. It grew out of the African American experience in the early 20th Century, wherever musically inventive people faced oppression and adversity. And that was happening in plenty of places besides northwest Mississippi. The blues was a product of its times, and so developed in parallel in many areas of the southern U.S. Each region produced its own dialect of the blues, though the Mississippi Delta and the Piedmont of the Southeast were certainly major centers. But of all the regions where blues flourished, Texas—being practically its own country in terms of culture, population, and size, and being home to hotspots such as Austin, Houston, and Dallas—had a profound impact on blues. The Lone Star state still remains a major influence on modern music styles, including and especially the blues.

The music of the late Sister Rosetta Tharpe is one of those buried treasures of Americana periodically exhumed to delight the previously unaware. Nominally a gospel singer, she was in fact a triple-threat performer: singer, guitarist, and composer. Of course, the respectful and tasteful covers by the all-female roster here reveal only Tharpe's compositional contributions. Festival staples like "This Train," sung by Janis Ian (with some snappy guitar picking of her own), and "Precious Memories," done in haunting but near tuneless fashion by Sweet Honey in the Rock, are joined by spirited renditions of lesser known Tharpe originals like "Beams of Heaven" (taken to church by Phoebe Snow) and "Up Above My Head" (Maria Muldaur). Other contributors like Victoria Williams, Rory Block, Odetta, and Michelle Shocked bring Tharpe's repertoire into their own stylistic realms. Tharpe's former singing partner Marie Knight most closely approaches the fervor of her late friend on "Didn't It Rain," with Jimmy Vivino hinting at Tharpe's guitar style. Thankfully the CD includes an MPEG of the Sister herself singing and rocking out on electric guitar with an energy unequaled elsewhere on the record. This video and her fascinating story as told by Gayle Wald in the extensive notes make Shout, Sister, Shout! a must-have. ~Michael Ross
