A rhythm and blues revivalist from an early age, pianist Mike Sanchez had an early affection for American rockabilly. Starting on the piano at the age ten, Sanchez discovered the works of Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis and used that manic playing style as his inspiration. Once a teenager, he began to play guitar and eventually started his first rockabilly combo in the late 70's. Introduced to like-minded musician Andy Sylvester by fellow roots rock enthusiast Robert Plant, the two struck up an instant friendship and began working as the Big Town Playboys soon after.

Popular with many of the blues rock legends of the 80's, the experience in the Playboys introduced Sanchez to heroes such as Eric Clapton and Mick Fleetwood through time. These friendships led to collaborations, and soon Sanchez began appearing on albums from artists like Jeff Beck and Bill Wyman. Eventually realizing he had enough material to strike out on his own, the Playboys broke up and Sanchez began to release solo albums. Wyman invited Sanchez to claim a spot in his popular Rhythm Kings, and Sanchez gladly accepted as he started his new endeavors with his typical gusto. /Biography by Bradley Torreano, AllMusic

"Just Can't Afford It" shows that Mike Sanchez can manage remarkable well on his own after leaving the Big Town Playboys, the band he created with Ian Jennings in 1984. The repertoire still catches, with blues you can dance to; rhythm & blues, steaming boogie woogie and swing, and also a couple of quick and slow latino tunes. "Sombras" and "Vamos A Bailar" are two of them. The first mentioned song, will be a little bit unfamiliar in many people's ears, but his own song "Vamos A Bailar" is on the other hand an incredible catchy and quick melody, where he has put in some elements from the blues. He also has a reggae version of "Goodnight My Love", but this song is a little tame and insignificant.
The album's highlight is obviously the two melodies "Just Can't Afford it" and "Ramblin Boogie", two steaming selfcomposed songs, that make your dancefoot swing and make your bloodstream run fast. The title melody gave me association to the Norwegian bluesman Reidar Larsen. Good versions of well chosen coversongs like Wynonie Harris's "Adam Come And Get Your Rib", Roy Miltons' "Waking Up Baby" and Willie Mabons' "Wow, I Feel So Good" makes this a great album.
Sanchez' qualities as a boogie pianist are well known, but on this cd, he is also an outstanding and a specially qualified guitarist.
The album works perfectly just for listening, but you should put on your dancingshoes and throw yourself into it! ~Rolf Stensletten

13. It Take Love (3:19)
14. You Can Dance To The Blues (w. Southside Johnny) (3:43)

Hallelujah! Yes, it's a brand new album from one of the UK's best loved and most popular bands. We could say it stars the incomparable singer and harmonic player supreme Paul Jones. We could add it also stars Tom McGuinness on lead guitar. But The Blues Band is really a co-operative with a team of superb musicians on board. And, this time, they are augmented by welcome guest artists adding extra blues power. Among those joining the regulars are singers Linda Lewis and Maggie Bell, the legendary Al Kooper on keyboards, Mike Sanchez and Pete Wingfield on piano, and Southside Johnny on raunchy vocals.

Together they tear through a barnstorming selection of mainly originals numbers, many written by bass man Gary Fletcher and slide guitarist Dave Kelly. There are 14 tracks to enjoy, ranging from Paul Jones "Suddenly I Like It" to Tom's thoughtful "My Brother Was A Sailor" - all about the perils of life at sea. Few Short Lines makes a fine addition to the legacy of a band, whose career now spans more than 30 years. Good to know they are still out on the road, playing the music they love. /Amazon

Mike spent four years as a full-time member of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, fronting the band alongside Georgie Fame, Beverly Skeete, Albert Lee, Andy Fairweather-Low and Eddie Floyd on their annual world tours.
