After several years without a new record, this confusing item appeared -- in hindsight, looking like a scam to launch Charlie's backup band into a career of its own. Musselwhite gets second billing, even though he sings five of the seven vocal tunes -- the lone instrumental being a so-so version of his by-now signature piece "Cristo Redentor" -- and the crowd that came to this live gig no doubt didn't see "Dynatones" on the marquee. For a debut disc on Rhino’s RNA, these Bay Area rock ‘n’ soul jivemeisters don’t waste any time turning on the heat. From the opening growling guitars on “When I Think About Love,” you know the ‘Tones are here to rock. They rip up “Tear the House Down,” C.C. Miller proving again he’s a soul shouter el supreme. They play it hard and fast with Willy DeVille’s classic “Soul Twist.” On C.C.’s song “Hard Way to Go,” the band sounds like a tight southern soul band.

The Pickett-Cropper chestnut “Danger Zone” is taken at a mid-tempo gallop and features a soulful vocal from Mr. Miller. “She’s Got That Stuff” percolates into a funky thang fueled by Bay Area axe killer Johnny Nitro. This disc kicks. As a minor quibble, more original tunes and fewer covers would have been nice, but… these guys definitely mean business. /Ike McKinley

Performing an average of 300 shows a year for more than two decades, the Dynatones were one of San Francisco's busiest R&B bands in the 1980s and '90s. Originally formed as the backup band for Chicago blues harmonica player/vocalist Charlie Musselwhite, the Dynatones eventually went on their own and continued to excite crowds with their high-energy performances. They represented the Miller Brewing Company, as part of their Miller Genuine Draft "Band Network," for seven years, and performed at the NFL Commissioner's "official" Super Bowl party in Miami. They accompanied soul vocalist Sir Mack Rice on his 1992 album, "Right Now," and recorded several albums on their own.
