Henry Mancini • The Jazz Sound From Peter Gunn

The music in this album offers an excellent sampling of the sounds you're likely to hear any Monday eve when Peter Gunn swings into action on NBC-TV. The musicians are the same jazzmen who are heard to outstanding advantage in all the programs. Here are some of them: Drummer Jack Sperling and bassist Rolly Bundock state the show's forceful opening motif, Fallout! The raw-sounding trumpet belongs to Pete Candoli, a veteran of the Woody Herman and Stan Kenton bands. Dreamsville, which might be subtitled "a love refrain for hipsters," features a moving alto sax solo by Ted Nash; his brother Dick can be heard dueling with fellow trombonist Milt Bernhart on Session at Pete's Pad. Saxist Ronnie Lang, who, in common with most of the musicians here, is a graduate of the Les Brown band, wields a bulging baritone on Sorta Blue. Other soloists at Mother's, the nitery where Peter Gunn hangs his Brooks Brothers jacket, are vibist Larry Bunker and pianist Johnny T. Williams.
This music is Peter Gunn's kind of jazz. I think you'll find that it's your kind, too."

Billy Strange • Secret Agent File

El tremolo de su guitarra puede escucharse en Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) y compuso y arregló These Boots Are Made For Walking.

Automatic Translation:
His name may sound like a complete stranger, but the truth is that he has been one of the most important figures in contemporary music. Guitarist, composer, arranger and producer, Billy Strange wrote great music classics and worked for stars like Frank and Nancy Sinatra, the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley and Nat King Cole.

Born in 1930, Strange started in music at the age of five, playing with his parents in a radio station in Long Beach (California). Although his first instrument was the trumpet, when he was given a Gibson L-7 his career changed forever.

After touring the American Southwest as a teenager, Billy Strange settled in California, where he started playing and singing for country groups of the time, such as The Sons of The Pioneers, Roy Rogers or Spade Cooley.

Eventually, he earned a good reputation in Los Angeles and started participating as a guitarist in recording sessions. That's how he would make great friendships with groups like the Beach Boys or Jan & Dean, legends of surf-rock at the time.

Billy Strange's name appears as co-author, with Mac Davis, of A Little Less Conversation from 1968, one of the classics of Elvis Presley, for whom he wrote numerous songs and with whom he played in many others.

His guitar sounds in songs by Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Wanda Jackson, the Beach Boys and especially Nancy Sinatra. His guitar tremolo can be heard in Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) and he composed and arranged These Boots Are Made For Walking.

His relationship with the Sinatras was very fruitful. He worked in Frank's famous Something Stupid and in the late 60s he conducted Nancy's live band, until in the 70s he moved to Nashville to take over a company from both of them.

As a soloist, Billy Strange put his voice on several soundtracks for television shows and Disney movies, and released instrumental albums with versions of greatest hits, such as You Only Live Twice, from the James Bond soundtrack.

His life's work was recognized when he was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, as deserved by one of the most influential songwriters in the history of rock. (europapress.es)

Crime and Spy Jazz on Screen, 1950-1970: A History and Discography

Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn theme. Lalo Schifrin's Mission: Impossible theme. John Barry's arrangement of the James Bond theme. These iconic melodies have remained a part of the pop culture landscape since their debuts in the late 1950s and early '60s: a "golden decade" that highlighted an era when movie studios and TV production companies employed full orchestral ensembles to provide a jazz backdrop for the suspenseful adventures of secret agents, private detectives, cops, spies and heist-minded criminals. Hundreds of additional films and television shows made during this period were propelled by similarly swinging title themes and underscores, many of which have (undeservedly) faded into obscurity. This meticulously researched book traces the embryonic use of jazz in mainstream entertainment from the early 1950s--when conservative viewers still considered this genre "the devil's music"--to its explosive heyday throughout the 1960s. Fans frustrated by the lack of attention paid to jazz soundtrack composers--including Jerry Goldsmith, Edwin Astley, Roy Budd, Quincy Jones, Dave Grusin, Jerry Fielding and many, many others--will find solace in these pages (along with all the information needed to enhance one's music library). The exploration of action jazz continues in this book's companion volume, Crime and Action Jazz on Screen Since 1971.

Hugo Montenegro & His Orchestra • Come Spy With Me

Biography
Hugo Montenegro was a composer, arranger, and conductor who is primarily known for his movie work in the '60s, as well as his adaptations of film scores like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Montenegro began his musical career in the U.S. Navy, where he arranged scores for various military bands. After he left the Navy, he completed school at Manhattan College, then he began a professional music career.

Initially, Montenegro was the staff manager to André Kostelanetz at Columbia Records in New York, which eventually led to a job as a conductor/arranger for several of the label's artists, most notably Harry Belafonte. By the mid-'50s, Montenegro was making his own albums of easy listening orchestral music.

Montenegro moved to California in the mid-'60s and began to write film scores, starting with Otto Preminger's Hurry Sundown in 1967. That same year, he recorded a version of the theme to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, which was written by Ennio Morricone. Featuring an arrangement that relied on a chorus, electric instruments, and special effects, the single was a major hit, reaching number one in the U.K. and number two in the U.S.; internationally, it sold over a million copies. An album titled Music from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" & "A Fistful of Dollars" & "For a Few Dollars More" appeared shortly after the single's release, and it reached the Top Ten in the spring 1968. Later in the year, Montenegro released a single of the theme from Hang 'Em High, which was a lesser hit, as was the album of the same name.

Montenegro began to branch out after the Hang 'Em High album, recording a diverse array of albums, ranging from show tunes to electronic experiments. Throughout the late '60s and '70s, he continued to score films, including Lady in Cement, The Undefeated, The Wrecking Crew, Tomorrow, and The Ambushers, among many others. He continued composing and recording until his death in 1981.

Un álbum titulado Music from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" & "A Fistful of Dollars" & "For a Few Dollars More" apareció poco después del lanzamiento del single, y llegó al Top Ten en la primavera de 1968.

A lo largo de los años 60 y 70, continuó componiendo películas, incluyendo Lady in Cement, The Undefeated, The Wrecking Crew, Tomorrow, y The Ambushers, entre muchas otras.

Detective Themes, Spy Music And Imaginary Thrillers

Soul Jazz Records new release Inner City Beat! Detective Themes, Spy Music and Imaginary Thrillers is a unique music album that comes with an exclusive limited edition, specially created 60-page graphic novel (by the mysterious cult 1960s pulp-fiction writer Mark Badly Antringham).
The music is a killer selection of funky, deep, rare, exciting and dancefloor heavyweight spy themes, detective music and thrillers from the 1960s and 1970s. It spans heavyweight break-beat funk, deep and heavy jazz, super-catchy mod themes, imaginary super-charged orchestral soundtracks and more.
These tracks are put together from British library music companies (DeWolfe, KPM, Conroy, Amphonic), all of whom supplied music regularly to television and films around the world during this period, often for use in detective and spy programmes, series and films. Many were never broadcast and have thus remained unheard, stored in the vaults for many years.
To accompany this unique album, Soul Jazz have also commissioned the creation of a special 60-page graphic novel which features the stunning artwork of the elusive illustrator John C. Patterson, in partnership with the celebrated 1960s pulp fiction cult novelist Mark Badly Antringham. The graphic novel is set in the imaginary seedy streets of East London in the 1960s in a world full of corrupt police, political intrigue and violent sadistic criminals.
This unique limited-edition graphic novel comes free with the initial run of the album Inner City Beat.

Review
The collection demonstrates how some short theme tunes and pieces of incidental music also received serious play as standalone tunes. Most of the artists and composers are not too well known, but there s quite a kick and bite. The Irish Times --The Irish Times

The Irish Times - El Irish Times
