Review:

Although The Boogie Woogie Trio is the title of this two-CD compilation, boogie-woogie pianists Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, and Meade "Lux" Lewis are featured as a trio on just 12 of the 45 tracks in this collection. Most of these trio performances come from two transcription sessions made for MacGregor in 1944, with two songs coming from 1939 airchecks originating at the Hotel Sherman in Chicago, with "Boogie Woogie Prayer" and their lively treatment of "St. Louis Blues" standing out as highlights. One error in the notes to this reissue is the omission of Johnson's rhythm section for his set from the 1947 Just Jazz concert in Pasadena, as guitarist Sonny Rogers, bassist Johnny Parker, and drummer Roy Milton are also on hand. Of course, a rhythm section was superfluous for a powerful boogie-woogie interpreter, so Johnson really didn't need any help. Especially noteworthy is Johnson's "Four O'Clock Blues." Likewise, drummer Smokey Stover's name is omitted from Lewis' various early-'50s airchecks from Club Hangover in San Francisco, though a second take of his "Six Wheel Chaser" is newly added. The instrument Lewis is stuck playing in this venue had obviously seen better days, but like many pianists of the day, he made the most of what he had to work with. The second CD focuses on vintage 1939 airchecks from the Hotel Sherman by each of the pianists individually, plus two trio selections. The sound quality is quite good, while all three artists are in top form, with Lewis stealing the show with his fine whistling in his appropriately titled "Whistling Blues." This two-CD set should be considered an essential acquisition for anyone interested in boogie-woogie.

All 45 tunes on this two-hour double CD consist solely of the boogie woogie piano playing of Pete Johnson, Meade "Lux" Lewis and Albert Ammons – there is no bass, drums or horns. 7 of the tunes are previously unreleased; the rest have been released on Storyville LP’s # 183, 184, 229 & 273. The music on Volume 1 is taken from radio transcriptions recorded in 1944, 1947 & 1954-54; Volume 2 is entirely from radio transcriptions from the Sherman Hotel in Chicago in 1939. Most of the tunes are solo piano, ten tunes are duets with Ammons & Johnson, one is a duet with Ammons & Lewis, and two tunes are with all three pianists. Brought together for the first time and made famous by John Hammond at the historic "Spirituals to Swing" concert at Carnegie Hall in 1938, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson & Meade "Lux" Lewis went on to become the greatest and most popular boogie woogie pianists of all time. Red Holloway • Red Soul

 Artist Biography

An exuberant player with attractive tones on both tenor and alto, Red Holloway was also a humorous blues singer. Whether it be bop, blues, or R&B, Holloway held his own with anyone. Holloway played in Chicago with Gene Wright's big band (1943-1946), served in the Army, and then played with Roosevelt Sykes (1948) and Nat Towles (1949-1950), before leading his own quartet (1952-1961) during an era when he also recorded with many blues and R&B acts. Holloway rose to fame in 1963 while touring with Jack McDuff, making his first dates as a leader for Prestige (1963-1965). Although he cut many records in R&B settings, Red Holloway was a strong bop soloist at heart, as he proved in the '70s when he battled Sonny Stitt to a tie on their recorded collaboration. He went on to work mostly as a leader, but also guested with Juggernaut and the Cheathams, and played with Clark Terry on an occasional basis. He continued being active as a player into the 21st century, releasing Standing Room Only on Chiaroscuro Records in 2000; Keep That Groove Going, with Plas Johnson, on Milestone Records in 2001; Coast to Coast, also on Milestone Records, in 2003; and Go Red Go! in 2009 on Delmark Records. Holloway died on February 25, 2012 of kidney failure and stroke. He was 84 years old.
