If Blue Note's alert microphones were present at Chucho Valdés's historic 1998 debut at the hallowed Village Vanguard, the results haven't officially landed in our CD machines yet. But the mikes were there, alright, the following year -- and they caught some virulent Cuban tempests (as the announcer warns, accurately, "There's a hurricane approaching from the Caribbean"). Yet the heat was turned up so much on Valdés's previous studio albums that the presence of a live audience only increases the temperature slightly here. Once again, Valdés's command of the keyboard is so technically staggering as to be stupefying, and he liberally throws in quotes from just about everything he ever absorbed -- from Chopin and Debussy to the Gershwins, Cecil Taylor and avant-garde strumming of the piano strings. He has so powerful an individual identity that "To Bud Powell" is more about Chucho than the late bop pianist. Yet the best, most fun track on the CD, "Punto Cubano," gives credence to the old saw about less being more. Built mostly around a simple tonic-dominant vamp; it has a Jarrett-like directness of melody and irresistible swing, though Chucho still isn't loath to turn on the big guns when desired. The long-running rhythm section of Francisco Rubio Pampin (bass), Raúl Pineda Roque (drums), and Roberto Vizcaino Guillót (congas), keeps Chucho all stoked up and steaming throughout the set. Also Valdés's sister, Mayra Caridad, lends a husky Miriam Makeba-sized voice to the not-so-peaceful lullaby "Drume Negrita."

Si los micrófonos de alerta de Blue Note estuvieron presentes en el histórico debut de Chucho Valdés en 1998 en el sagrado Village Vanguard, los resultados aún no han aterrizado oficialmente en nuestras máquinas de CD. Pero los micrófonos estaban allí, sí, al año siguiente - y captaron algunas virulentas tempestades cubanas (como advierte el locutor, con precisión, "Se acerca un huracán desde el Caribe"). Sin embargo, Valdés subió tanto la temperatura en sus anteriores álbumes de estudio que la presencia de un público en directo sólo la aumenta ligeramente aquí. Una vez más, el dominio del teclado de Valdés es tan asombroso técnicamente como para resultar estupefaciente, e incluye profusamente citas de casi todo lo que ha absorbido, desde Chopin y Debussy hasta los Gershwin, Cecil Taylor y el rasgueo vanguardista de las cuerdas del piano. Tiene una identidad individual tan poderosa que "To Bud Powell" es más sobre Chucho que sobre el fallecido pianista de bop. Chucho Valdés • Briyumba Palo Congo- Religion of the Congo

 

 Briyumba Palo Congo es un álbum de estudio del pianista de jazz afrocubano Chucho Valdés, lanzado en 1999 por Blue Note.​ Producido por René López. El disco está compuesto por una combinación de temas de autoría del propio Valdés y una selección de estándares del jazz versionados al estilo propio del intérprete. Aunque a menudo se adivinan las raíces jazzisticas en los temas, debido a que se realiza un sutil repaso por la interpretación más tradicional de los mismos, al menos durante breves compases. Al mismo tiempo, durante la ejecución de los mismos, se homenajea a diversos autores e intérpretes de la escena musical cubana y de los Estados Unidos.

El disco se compone de una elaborada mezcla entre el jazz y la música cubana, que más allá de encontrarse definida por los diversos elementos y recursos sonoros utilizados, se permite también el homenaje sentido y específico a varios personajes clave de la música popular. Esto está presente fundamentalmente en algunos temas en particular, tal es el caso de Bolero, una conmovedora balada de enorme riqueza armónica que recuerda inmediatamente la sutileza de Bill Evans, todo un experto en este estilo de pieza. "Caravan" es un vehículo perfecto para rendir tributo a dos nombres, el autor de la pieza Juan Tizol y a Duke Ellington que interpretó por vez primera a la misma, y para reafirmar sin duda alguna, cuan virtuoso pianista es Valdés. El nombre de George Gershwin hace su primera aparición en el disco de la mano del clásico "Embraceable You" que Valdés toca solo prácticamente por completo, a excepción de 14 compases en los que la sección rítmica apoya al piano momentáneamente. Ponle la clave nos aproxima desde su introducción al trabajo de Ernesto Lecuona y destaca la labor del percusionista Roberto Vizcaina. Finalmente "Rhapsody in Blue" supone el último, aunque también doble homenaje de este disco. En esta original versión es aludido desde luego su autor George Gershwin, pero también Orestes López Macho recibe tributo mediante la inclusión de un fragmento del danzón Centro San Agustín que el compusiera, otorgando una impronta fresca y diferente a la ejecución de este clásico de jazz.

 Briyumba Palo Congo is a studio album by Afro-Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés, released in 1999 by Blue Note and produced by René López. The album is a combination of Valdés' own compositions and a selection of jazz standards in his own style. Although the jazz roots of the themes are often discernible, due to the subtle revisiting of the more traditional interpretation of the themes, at least for a few brief measures. At the same time, during the performance, homage is paid to various authors and performers of the Cuban and American music scene.

The album is composed of an elaborate blend of jazz and Cuban music, which beyond being defined by the various elements and sound resources used, also allows itself to pay a heartfelt and specific homage to several key figures in popular music. This is present fundamentally in some themes in particular, such is the case of Bolero, a moving ballad of enormous harmonic richness that immediately recalls the subtlety of Bill Evans, an expert in this style of piece. "Caravan" is a perfect vehicle to pay tribute to two names, the author of the piece Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington who first performed it, and to reaffirm without a doubt what a virtuoso pianist Valdés is. Chucho Valdés • Bele Bele en La Habana

 

Chucho Valdés, born Jesús Dionisio Valdés, is a Cuban pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger. He was born in Quivicán, Cuba. In 1972 he founded the group Irakere, one of Cuba's best-known Latin jazz bands. Together with pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Valdés is revered as one of Cuba's greatest jazz pianists.

His father Bebo Valdés, also a pianist, is the former director of Havana's famous "Tropicana" night club. Bebo Valdés, now in his 80's, is still performing, and won a Latin Grammy award in 2003 together with Israel "Cachao" López and Patato Valdés, and in 2005 together with flamenco singer Diego El Cigala.

Chucho has won three Grammy awards - one in 1978 for the album Live at Newport by Irakere, a second in 1998 for his contribution to the CD Havana by his band Crisol (formed in 1997), with two songs Mr. Bruce and Mambo para Roy written by Chucho, and the third in 2003 for his album Live at the Village Vanguard.

In 2005, Chucho was sued for divorce by his wife Ileana Mateu Valdes, a Cuban American residing in Englewood, New Jersey. It took almost two years of litigation before the parties settled the matter. A New Jersey matrimonial court did not recognize a prior Cuban divorce obtained by Chucho Valdes in Cuba holding that it had violated the fair notions of constitutional due process of the United States. On March 28, 2007, a divorce was granted to the parties and Chucho Valdes finally agreed to pay the lawyers of Ms. Valdes the sum of $35,000.00 for their work in the case. This agreement had to be approved by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C. since it dealt directly with transfers of money by Cuban nationals to the United States. Such transfers are prohibited under the Cuban embargo regulations. The Miami Herald Spanish Language newspaper, El Nuevo Herald, reported the story on its front page and characterized the case as historic. According to El Nuevo Herald, it was the first time in 46 years that a Cuban national paid with Cuban funds for the settlement of a civil lawsuit filed by an American citizen in U.S. courts.

Over the past few years his recording output has been very prolific including a duo setting with his father Bebo Valdes, and several solo projects as well. In 2009 he again did a collaboration in Spain under the tutelage of Javier Limon who produced his Grammy winning "Lagrimas Negras." This time around he accompanied flamenco torch singer Concha Buika on "El Ultimo Trago."

En los últimos años su producción discográfica ha sido muy prolífica, incluyendo un dúo con su padre, Bebo Valdés, y varios proyectos en solitario. En 2009 volvió a colaborar en España bajo la tutela de Javier Limón, que produjo su «Lagrimas Negras», ganador de un Grammy. Esta vez acompañó a la cantante de antorchas flamencas Concha Buika en «El Último Trago».
