Tom Tomlinson & Jerry Kennedy • Guitar's Greatest Hits

TOM TOMLINSON had worked on the Louisiana Hayride in the early 50s and carved out a reputation as a hot session guitarist, before joining Johnny Horton's band - he played on all Horton's hits.

JERRY KENNEDY had been a successful 13-year old Rockabilly singer, 'Jerry Glenn', before also joining the Louisiana Hayride house band, eventually becoming a Nashville 'A' Team regular at the age of just seventeen.

They teamed up in 1961 to cut the Guitar's Greatest Hits LP, and recorded Guitar's Greatest Hits Vol. II the following year.

Hank Garland • Move! The Guitar Artistry Of Hank Garland

This long-awaited two-disc set features all of Garland's jazz sides for Columbia Records between 1959-1960, including the complete albums Velvet Guitar, The Unforgettable Guitar of Hank Garland, and Jazz Winds From a New Direction. Although it may seem a bit quaint, in its time Jazz Winds was a revelatory performance; previously, it was almost impossible to believe that a country guitarist could attack jazz lines with this much imagination and finesse, even taking into account what Chet Atkins had already accomplished. Also surprising was the fact that Jazz Winds wasn't commercial or countrified in any way; it was marketed as a straight jazz album, played by a real jazz quartet that included Joe Morello (drums), Joe Benjamin (bass), and vibraphonist Gary Burton in his debut recording. However, even if that album caused all the fuss, there's terrific playing scattered throughout the other two, whether it's the cleverly titled "Call D. Law," the hard-swinging Garland original "Why Not?," or lovely takes on "Scarlet Ribbons" and "Polka Dots and Moonbeams." These sessions have become legendary in guitar circles, and the fact that most of them have been out of print for decades makes this reissue a real treasure for Garland fans.

Hank Garland • Jazz Winds From A New Direction

Review by Richard S. Ginell
Lots of folks in the country music streets of Nashville and the jazz canyons of New York were shaken up by this release, for country supersession man Hank Garland demonstrated that he could be just as persuasive rattling off swift, sophisticated bebop as he was playing thousands of country licks on the jukeboxes. Nothing fazes him, not even the tricky "Move," for Garland had technique to burn and a thoroughly modern harmonic approach. Not only that, a 17-year-old Boston kid named Gary Burton makes an astonishingly brash and assured recorded debut on vibes on this record, and bassist Joe Benjamin and the Dave Brubeck Quartet's unquenchably swinging drummer Joe Morello (who had toured with Garland when Garland was a teenager) are on hand from New York. This record seemed to promise great things ahead for Garland in the jazz world, a prospect cut sadly short later in 1961 by a crippling auto accident. Originally recorded in Nashville by Columbia and country & western producer Don Law (another shock to the purists' systems), Jazz Winds has been in print in some form almost continuously.

Hank Garland ‎• Velvet Guitar

Review by Jason Ankeny
Just months prior to the near-fatal auto accident that derailed his musical career, Hank Garland completed the lovely Velvet Guitar, an LP as smooth and rich as its title portends. Earthy yet urbane, Garland's signature guitar sound translates the emotional intimacy of country music into the cerebral sensibilities of jazz, a sleight of hand that retains its mystery and potency decades after the fact. Namecheck all the influences you wish, from Charlie Christian to Les Paul and beyond, but the simple fact remains that no one else has ever made music that sounds quite like this. A beautiful record made almost unbearably bittersweet by the tragedy lurking just around the corner.

The Nashville All-Stars • After the Riot at Newport

Review
by Thom Owens
The Nashville All-Stars is a group of Nashville sessionmen, including pianist Floyd Cramer, saxophonist Boots Randolph, Gary Burton, Hank Garland, and Chet Atkins. Their debut, After the Riot in Newport, is a surprisingly jazzy effort, highllighted by some excellent leads by Atkins, yet it is a bit too down-home for jazzbos, and a bit too polished for country fans. Nevertheless, fans of pure musicianship will find plenty to treasure on the album.
