Eumir Deodato • Love Island

Brazilian-born Eumir Deodato has racked up 16 platinum records to his credit as artist, arranger or producer with combined sales of well over 25 million records in the USA alone. His discography, including compilations and all his work as arranger, producer and keyboardist, surpasses 450 albums. He has also had the honor of performing with the St. Louis Symphony (which backed him on his superb Artistry album), the Cincinnati Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestra di Musica Leggera dell'Unione Musicisti di Roma. In addition, several artists over the years have covered his songs, including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Sarah Vaughan and The Emotions to mention just a few.

And yet, in spite of all of his varied triumphs, honors and distinctions over the years, the multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist will probably forever be associated with one song - his innovative rendition of Richard Strauss' classical opus “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (or more commonly known as the theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey). That single compelling song, which first appeared on his 1973 debut album for CTI “Prelude,” sold at least five million copies and earned Deodato his first Grammy Award, instantly moved him to international stardom and setting a course for his remarkable ongoing career in music. Thirty years later, that same tune has found its way into the repertoire of the jam band Phish, a testament to Deodato's enduring influence.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from Italian and Portuguese origin, Eumir Deodato got his start by playing the accordion at age 12. Shortly thereafter, he started studying piano as well as orchestration, arranging and conducting. Strictly self-taught, he immersed himself in theory books while spending countless evenings sitting behind orchestras and carefully observing how each part was played. His first break came at age 17 when he arranged and conducted his first recording session for a 28-piece orchestra. It wasn't long before Deodato became one of the most active and respected arrangers and pianists in Rio's busy music scene, recording for such artists as Milton Nascimento, Marcos Valle, Elis Regina and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

In 1968, Deodato moved to New York and began working with Luiz Bonfa, the legendary composer of Black Orpheus, while also doing extensive studio work for Astrud Gilberto, Walter Wanderley, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Marcos Valle and many other Brazilian artists who were living in the Big Apple at the time. When writing the arrangements for Astrud Gilberto's “Beach Samba,” he became acquainted with producer Creed Taylor, who hired him to arrange for other CTI artists like Wes Montgomery, Stanley Turrentine, George Benson, Paul Desmond and Tom Jobim. His reputation in the fields of pop and black music was strengthened by his arrangement work for Frank Sinatra (Sinatra & Co.), Roberta Flack (Killing Me Softly, Chapter Two, Quiet Fire) and Aretha Franklin (Let Me In Your Life).

Following a performance at the Hollywood Bowl with the CTI All-Stars Band in 1972, Deodato started recording his record. His debut appearance as a leader, billed as 2001 Space Concert, was held at the Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1973.

After seven years of world-wide touring (including Australia, Japan, Canada, South America, Europe) and eight coast-to-coast tours of the States, Deodato decided to concentrate on studio work once again. Besides highly successful solo albums for the CTI, MCA, Warner And Atlantic labels, his work as a producer/arranger earned him several more laurels. One of his first productions was Kool & The Gang's #1 pop single Celebration. He followed that success with production or arranging work for Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Franks, Gwen Guthrie, Chuck Mangione, Breakfast Club, The Dazz Band, One Way, Con-Funk-Shun, Kleeer, Pretty Poison, Kevin Rowland (Dexy's Midnight Runners), White Lion and Brenda K. Starr, for whom he produced the pop hit I Still Believe in 1987. Deodato also had three other multi-platinum albums for Kool & The Gang's Ladies' Night, Something Special and As One.

In the 90's, Deodato continued to be a vital force on the pop scene through his work with Icelandic singer Bjork. In addition to arranging her last three albums: 1995's Post, 1996's Telegram and 1997's Homogenic, Deodato produced a highly praised acoustic version of Bjork's “Isobel,” sub-titled Deodato Mix, which became a club scene favorite. He has also produced material for French singer Clementine (also touring Japan with her as a special guest in 1994), arranged and produced a top 10 single for Brazilian singer Gal Costa (1996) and has performed as guest conductor with Bjork both in Brazil (1996), and in the States at the Tibetan Freedom Concerts at Downing Stadium (1997). In 1998, Deodato arranged for Brazilian pop acts Titans (Vol. II, with sales over 500,000 copies) and Carlinhos Brown (Omelete Man) as well as for the latest album by pop-rock band Penelope Charmosa (released in 1999). He was also special guest on a project by Japanese pop star Akemi Kakihara, recorded in London during the summer of 1998. In 1999, he scored Bossa Nova, a Bruno Barreto film starring Amy Irving, and the following year produced the CD of that score for Verve Records. His most recent projects including production work for French rock singer Damien Saez, Brazilian-Japanese singer Lisa Ono and for jazz singer Ann Hampton Callaway.

Deodato has also worked on several movie scores, including The Onion Field, The Black Pearl, Ghostbusters II, White Nights, The Girl From Ipanema, The Adventurers (recorded with A.C. Jobim and the London Symphony Orchestra), The Gentle Rain, Target Risk, The Reporter, Beat Street, Body Rock and Bossa Nova. His recordings have also been widely used on major movies such as Being There and The Exorcist.

In November 2001, Deodato participated in a benefit concert in New York City where he played only 1 song (Also Sprach Zarathustra: 2001). The reaction was so fantastic he got encouraged to go back doing concerts. By 2002 he lined up a few selected presentations, starting with a concert at the Vienna Opera House, as part of the Vienna Summer Jazz Festival. That was followed by Villach (Austria), Pori (Finland), The Hague (North Sea Jazz Festival), and many others that followed, like Capetown (South Africa), Rome and Rimini (Italy), Amenia, NY (World Peace Organization), Antigua, Guatemala etc.

Meanwhile, in 2002 he worked with Milton Nascimento in Rio de Janeiro, which generated a Latin Grammy for the song Tristesse as best Brazilian song of the year, then miscellaneous work with different artists, including Barbara Mendes, Ana Carolina, Fernanda Abreu and more recently, KD Lang for her record released in 2004.

In 2007 Brazilian Record company "Biscoito Fino", releases the “Deodato Trio in Rio” CD and DVD (end of month), filmed and recorded at the Sala Cecilia Meirelles in Rio last Summer, featuring Marcelo Mariano on Bass and Renato Massa on Drums. It also includes performances of some of the most memorable Antonio Carlos Jobim's songs and also comemorates his postumous anniversary. Verve has also released “Do It Again.”

Verve también ha lanzado "Do It Again".

Victor Feldman • The Young Vic

Victor Feldman was born in Edgware, Middlesex in 1934.

He caused a sensation as a musical prodigy when he was “discovered” at age 7. His family were all musical and his father founded the Feldman Swing Club in London in 1942 to showcase his talented son. His first professional appearance was playing drums at No 1 Rhythm Club as a member of the Feldman Trio with brothers Robert on clarinet and Monty on piano accordion. In 1944 he was featured at a concert with Glenn Miller's AAAF band, featured inevitably as “Kid Krupa”. Carlo Krahmer encouraged Feldman to play the vibes which he did first in the Ralph Sharon Sextet and later in the Roy Fox band. He worked in India in 1952 and 1953 in a band led by pianist Eddie Carroll. His vibraphone and conga drum playing were notable, but it was as a pianist that he became best known.
Before leaving the U.K. in 1955 to work in the U.S., Feldman recorded with Ronnie Scott's orchestra and quintet from 1954 to 1955, which also featured other important British jazz musicians such as Phil Seamen and Hank Shaw, among others. It was Scott who recommended that Feldman emigrate to the U.S., which he did in 1957. Once there, his first steady work was with the Woody Herman Herd. From there he went on to join Buddy DeFranco. He recorded with many different jazz artists, including Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and Miles Davis, most notably on Davis' 1963 album Seven Steps to Heaven, the title tune being his own composition. The 5-CD Shelly Manne Black Hawk set, originally released on LP in September, 1959, is a good representation of Feldman's unmistakable driving “comping” behind the soloists, helping to define the session as a valuable hard bop genre element.
In 1957 Feldman settled in Los Angeles permanently and then specialized in lucrative session work for the US film and recording industry. He also branched out to work a variety of musicians outside of jazz, working with artists such as Frank Zappa in 1967, Steely Dan in the 1970s and Tom Waits and Joe Walsh in the 1980s. Feldman died at age 53, a year after the death of his wife, to whom he was completely devoted.

Howard Roberts • Forever

Howard Roberts was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1929. He began playing guitar at age 8 and by age 15 was playing gigs in and around the Phoenix area. In 1950 (at age 20) Howard decided to move to Los Angeles, and through hard work and the invaluable assistance of fellow guitarist/arranger-composer Jack Marshall, Howard met and began playing with some of L.A.'s very best musicians, including Bobby Troup, Chico Hamilton and Barney Kessel. This led to a job with Bobby Troup and circa 1956 to a solo recording contract with Verve Records. At around that same time as he signed with Verve, Howard decided to concentrate on recording/studio work - work that he would do nearly non- stop until the early 1970's.

Howard's studio career has to be one of the most prolific ever. He played rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass and even mandolin on an incredible number of television and movie projects. He also backed jazz, pop, country and rock 'n roll artists, and was heard on thousands of records over his career.

But Howard wasn't just a first call studio musician. Beginning in the late 60's Howard's interest in studio work diminished. He began to travel and hold guitar seminars all around the country. Howard had a genuine talent for teaching and curriculum development, a talent he shared with his wife Patty. This interest/talent led to the founding of a school for guitarists: GIT (The Guitar Institute of Technology). He also established Playback Publishing and wrote several books as part of a structured guitar music curriculum. And if that wasn't enough, for several years Howard wrote a monthly column (”Jazz Improvisation”) for Guitar Player magazine.

Howard had already recorded under his own name on at least one other label (Verve Records) before he signed with Capitol Records. Prior to that (circa 1955) he recorded at least two records as part of pianist/song stylist Bobby Troup's band on the Bethlehem label. “Color Him Funky,” and “H.R. is a Dirty Guitar Player” are the first two albums Howard recorded for Capitol, and were recorded within a few months of each other in 1963. The outstanding rhythm section is the same on both dates - Chuck Berghofer on bass and Earl Palmer on drums. Paul Bryant and Burkley Kendrix are on organ.

Most of Howard Roberts' recordings through the years, particularly a long string for Capitol in the ‘60’s and into the ‘70’s were quite commercial, featuring brief versions of current pop tunes. He did some good work with The Magic Band on some live recordings at Donte’s in Los Angeles that showed hints of what he could do. A versatile studio player, Roberts finally had an opportunity in 1977 to record some no-nonsense, straight-ahead jazz. “The Real Howard Roberts,” was a stand out, with a good band behind him interpreting jazz standards.

Howard Roberts died June 28, 1992

James Clay • A Double Dose Of Soul

Review by Scott Yanow
James Clay only led two record sessions before settling in obscurity in Texas, where he would not be rediscovered until the late '80s. Cannonball Adderley helped present him on Riverside in 1960, so it seemed fair that Clay utilized several of Adderley's sidemen on this session (cornetist Nat Adderley or vibraphonist Victor Feldman, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes) along with a young Gene Harris on piano. Clay splits his time between his lyrical flute and tough tenor, proving to be an excellent bop-based improviser. [The CD reissue adds two alternate takes to the original LP program, highlighted by Feldman's "New Delhi," "Come Rain or Come Shine," and Nat's blues "Pockets."]

Biography
James Clay is a name new to many modern-day jazz listeners. But Clay's earliest fame came in the late 1950s when the young woodwind expert arrived on the Los Angeles jazz scene as a contemporary of this fellow Texan Ornette Coleman. Never an avant-garde experimenter like Coleman, Clay was immediately heard by his peers as a gifted mainstream player with ears open to a wide harmonic range. Clay went into obscurity for nearly 30 years before making a comeback.

A fine tenor saxophonist who was part of the long tradition of Texas tenors, Clay was born in Dallas. Although early on he mostly played r&b and blues-oriented music, he was an early associate of Ornette Coleman and was open to playing in freer settings. He spent ten years in the Ray Charles band. He moved up North in the mid-1950s and recorded with drummer Larance Marable in 1956.

In 1960, Clay made his greatest impact, leading two excellent albums for Riverside. “The Sound of the Wide Open Spaces,” teams him with David “Fathead” Newman (another Texas tenor), pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Arthur Taylor. The two tenors battle it out on a variety of tunes and the results are a tie for the saxophonists and a victory for the listeners. “A Double Dose of Soul,” has Clay utilizing Cannonball Adderley’s sidemen (cornetist Nat Adderley, vibraphonist Victor Feldman, Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes) plus pianist Gene Harris in a bop-based program that features Clay doubling on flute.

Rather than building on this promising start, James Clay decided to move back to Texas and become an educator. Very little was heard from him on the national scene until cornetist Don Cherry persuaded Clay to record on his 1988 album “Art Deco.”

He recorded “Cookin’ at the Continental,” for Antilles in 1992 with an all star lineup of David Newman, Roy Hargrove, Kirk Lightsey, Christian McBride, and Winard Harper. On this date he is in fine form and his lighter sound blends well with Newman.

James Clay was still actively performing prior to his 1995 death.

Curtis Amy • Mosaic Select

Review by Thom Jurek
Of all the volumes in the Mosaic Select series -- as of this writing there are eight -- none is more welcome or unexpected than this set by the late saxophonist, composer, and arranger, Curtis Amy. What these three CDs contain are Amy's entire six-album output for the Pacific Jazz label which includes his masterpiece, Katanga!. Amy's star continued to shine in different contexts after he left the label, as a tough tenor with Gerald Wilson and Ray Charles, as a soloist on the Doors' Soft Parade and L.A. Woman albums, and of course, as an arranger and bandleader in R&B singer Merry Clayton's group (the pair were married).
But it is the material here which cements Amy's place in the jazz pantheon. Amy hailed from Houston, and is very much a part of the rich and varied Texas tenor tradition. He migrated to Los Angeles to work, and fronted numerous soul-jazz bands there before recording these six albums for Pacific Jazz. The titles include the Blues Message and Meetin' Here (co-led with organist Paul Bryant), Groovin' Blue (co-led with drummer Frank Butler), and Way Down, Tippin' on Through, and Katanga! (the latter three as a solo leader), all of them issued between 1960 and 1963. The first three albums in this set offer the view of Amy as a bluesed-out soul wailer in a scene dominated by the latter heyday of cool jazzers and West Coast hard boppers. The players on these three recordings offered a glimpse into the deep R&B roots of the Sunset Strip jazz club scene: along with Bryant and Butler, trombonist Roy Brewster, drummer Jimmy Miller, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, and bassists Jimmy Bond and Clarence Jones played on these sessions, all of them stalwarts on that steaming but criminally undocumented scene. The fourth album in the set, Way Down, features some new faces, most notably Marcus Belgrave before his stint with Charles Mingus, and vibist Roy Ayers before he went solo. Other players on the date include bassist George Morrow, and pianist Victor Feldman. Tippin' on Through is a Live at the Lighthouse date, and Amy pulled out all the stops with Larance Marable, Brewster, Bobby Whitlock, and pianist John Houston. On all of these sessions, Amy is deeply rooted in the rhythm and blues and soul traditions of the Texas tenors. His combo work is restricted rhythmically perhaps, but it is harmonically brilliant in the way it stretches these forms to the breaking point at the front line, and the pieces on the live set dovetail and turn back on themselves -- dig the large modal frames Houston lays down under Ayers' vibes: Ayers then extrapolates them for the horns to jump off from. Texturally too, the way solos are layered and dovetail and turn back on themselves dynamically is quite remarkable, in that many of the New York soul-jazz dates didn't get to this place until 1966 or so. Finally, Amy was already deeply under the sway of Coltrane on Tippin' on Through: his own solos take the modal approach, and wind around one or two phrases and blow them from the inside out, exploding into torrents of sound without moving away from the blues.
Katanga! is a case in point all by itself. It remains a jazz classic for its wondrously extrapolated and striated harmonics, its knotty sense of interval, and Amy's melodic sophistication, which was deeply saturated with Latin and African scalar considerations. This set also features the trumpet playing of the little-known and under-recorded Dupree Bolton, the elegant funk of guitarist Ray Crawford, and features Amy on soprano, an instrument that he mastered and became an original voice on, despite the fact that he had played it for such a brief time previous to this session. Here, despite the elongated compositional structures, the blues are never out of the limelight entirely. The title track, written by Dupree Bolton, and "Lonely Woman" (Amy's version, not Ornette Coleman's) are the highlights here, but there isn't a weak millisecond on this slab. In all, this collection is its own revelation -- not only of Amy's overlooked artistry, but of the city of L.A. teeming with fresh sounds and approaches before the steamroller of rock and roll overshadowed it.

B.B. King • LA Midnight

Biography
Born on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi in 1925, Riley B. King would start from very humble beginnings. His family moved around the area, and the young Riley experienced early a life of constant motion. As a youngster he was a farm laborer, but drawn to music, he took up the guitar; he played on street corners, and would sometimes play in as many as four towns a night. In 1946, he hitchhiked to Memphis, to pursue his music career. Memphis was a large musical community where every style of music could be found, a good place for a young man who wanted to play the blues. Riley stayed with his cousin Bukka White, a celebrated bluesman in his own right, who was able to show him first hand the guitar foundations of the blues.

Playing an acoustic set of rural blues, he kicked around a lot of the clubs in Memphis, getting a break in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. This led to steady engagements at the 16th St. Grill in West Memphis, and later to a ten-minute spot on black Memphis radio station WDIA. “King's Spot,” became so popular, it was expanded and became the “Sepia Swing Club.” Becoming a popular local disc jockey, Riley needed a professional sounding name. He was the Beale Street Blues Boy then Blues Boy King, and eventually B.B. King. This led to the studio recording of “Miss Martha King” for the local Bullet label, which didn’t cause much of a stir, but it did stimulate B.B. to pursue a recording contract.

He recorded a couple of singles for Bullet, and then signed with Modern’s RPM where he did “Three O’Clock Blues”, in 1951. This song proved to be a major hit, and he quickly followed that with “Please Love Me”, “You Upset Me Baby”, “Every Day”, (which would become his theme song), “Ten Long Years”, and “Sweet Little Angel”. These are available as “The RPM Hits 1951-1957” (Ace). These recordings rose to the tops of the R&B charts, and he went on the road to promote the songs, thus starting his life of incessant touring. This is how he developed his unique and signature style, every night, playing the blues. By 1955 he had a full time band, and hit the road, where he’s been ever since.

Riding the wave of popularity generated by the RPM records, he churned out a string of hits for their subsidiary Kent label, and stayed with them throughout the ‘50’s. This is the period where he made a name for himself, both in the record charts, and promoting the records by playing live. But by 1961, he had decided to change labels, looking to get a better deal than he was getting at RPM/Kent. He signed with ABC/Paramount records, which had just scored big by signing Ray Charles from Atlantic, they were aware of a bigger market, knew how to market B.B.’s music and were willing to pay for it. B.B. King received a $25,000 signing bonus. The overall environ was much more professional, and though they brought in first class arrangers and musicians, they pretty much gave B.B. a free reign, or so he thought.

There was in this period of the early ‘60’s a change of direction that took away from the blues essence he was known for and the record sales were not what everyone expected. Then producer/arranger Johnny Pate had the idea of recording B.B. on his home turf, a black nightspot, with his own band. The result was “Live at the Regal”, released in January 1965. It blew everyone away, and changed contemporary guitar forever. This album is responsible for the acceptance and adherence of a whole new generation, mostly white, to the blues. The guitar players alone who were influenced by it is staggering, and includes every blues and rock player from then on. It reestablished the way to play electric blues and made B.B. King “King of the Blues”!!

B.B. King has one of the world's most identifiable guitar styles, and his guitar Lucille is probably the most famous. Lucille is a Custom Shop Gibson ES-355. His first guitar back in his early days in Mississippi was a Stella acoustic. He borrowed from Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Lonnie Johnson, of course T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise and complex vocal-like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of guitar vocabulary. Drawing heavily from the sweet single string T-bone style patterns, he plays with a short stinging attack, often in a cluster pattern. Starting with a five note signature, he follows with delicate phrases, sliding into notes, and allowing space for them to build. He listened a lot to jazz horn players, and it is portrayed in his use of dynamics, tension and tone, he is the undisputed master of an economical method of expression.

By 1968, B.B. was playing at the Newport Folk Festival and at Bill Graham's Fillmore West on bills with the hottest rock artists of the day, all which were huge fans. The Rolling Stones chose him to open their ’69 tour, thus gaining even broader exposure. He was able to capitalize on the Blues Revival at the time, but then again he was always around, and perennially on the road. In 1969 he was the premier act on the new ABC label Bluesway where he came out with “The Thrill is Gone”, which is his signature tune, and is his biggest hit to date. This opened up new venues and he was soon playing Las Vegas, in the same clubs where Sinatra played. By 1970 he was on the Tonight Show, and on the Ed Sullivan Show, the blues makes it to prime time America.

The 1970’s saw B.B.King sitting on top of the world, so then he decided to go back to his blues roots and did two excellent albums “Live at the Cook County Jail”, and “Completely Well/Live in Cook County Jail”. These showcase what he does best, playing in front of a live audience. Both for the ABC/MCA label where he continued to record for years to come.

He would go on to record many commercially successful albums, and of course stayed on the road performing around the world, known as the Ambassador of the Blues, as certainly no one has played the blues in so many places. MCA released a four cd box set “B.B.King, King of the Blues”, as a compilation of his recording history up to 1991. B.B. was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984,the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1990.He received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 1987, and has received honorary doctorates from several colleges as Yale University in 1977; Berklee College of Music in 1982; Rhodes College of Memphis in 1990 and Mississippi Valley State University in 2002. In 1992, he received the National Award of Distinction from the University of Mississippi. There is also a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Presidential Medal of Honor.

In 1991, B.B. King's Blues Club opened on Beale Street in Memphis, and in 1994, a second club was launched in Los Angeles. A third club in New York City's Times Square opened in June 2000 and two clubs opened in Connecticut in January 2002. In 1996, the CD-Rom “On the Road with B.B. King: An Interactive Autobiography”, and his book “Blues All Around Me” (Avon Books) was published. “The Arrival of B.B. King” (Doubleday) by Charles Sawyer, a biography was published in 1980. Between 1951 and 1985 he listed an amazing 75 entries in Billboard’s R&B charts. There are multiple Grammy’s (over 15 last count) sitting on his shelf at home, and a wall full of Gold and Platinum Records representing millions in album sales. “Deuces Wild”, an all-star collection of duets, released in 1997, returned B.B. to the limelight. His 1998 album, “Blues on the Bayou”, was well received, and his annual B.B. King Blues Festival Tour is a top attraction. The1999 release of “Let the Good Times Roll—The Music of Louis Jordan” was a musical tribute to one of his heroes. B.B. teamed up with Eric Clapton on the multi-platinum release of “Riding with the King”, (Reprise 2000) which was Clapton’s tribute to him, an excellent record, a master and his pupil so many years later, so many roads traveled both still playing the blues. On the occasion of his 80th birthday in 2005, he recorded a star- studded duets album “80”(Geffen) as a testament to his will as an enduring musician.

B.B. King has released another gem of a album. “One Kind Favor” on Geffen Records.Recorded at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, CA “OneKind Favor” is meant to sound like an album recorded in the50s. To get this sound producer T-Bone Burnett and King replicated the kind of blues band King had back in the day.Studio conditions of the time were reproduced. The result is a vintage sounding album filled with the songs that influenced King in his early days as an artist. Highly Recommended!

B.B. King was the most fortunate and unusual of bluesmen; a success on his own terms, and in his own time. He was the best known, most recognized bluesman on the planet. He stayed true to himself and his music, and made it on that.

B.B. King passed on May 15, 2015.

King "King of the Blues"!

Well/Live in Cook County Jail".

En 1996, el CD-Rom "On the Road with B.B. King: Una autobiografía interactiva", y su libro "Blues All Around Me" (Avon Books). "The Arrival of B.B.

B.B. King falleció el 15 de mayo de 2015.

Leroy Vinnegar • Leroy Walks!

Leroy Vinnegar (July 13, 1928 – August 3, 1999) was an American jazz bassist.

Born in Indianapolis, the self-taught Vinnegar established his reputation in Los Angeles during the 1950s and 1960s. His trademark was the rhythmic "walking" bass line, a steady series of ascending or descending notes, and it brought him the nickname "The Walker". Besides his jazz work, he also appeared on a number of soundtracks and pop albums, notably Van Morrison's 1972 album, Saint Dominic's Preview.

He recorded extensively as both a leader and sideman. He came to public attention in the 1950s as a result of recording with Lee Konitz, André Previn, Stan Getz, Shorty Rogers, Chet Baker, Shelly Manne, Joe Castro and Serge Chaloff. He played bass on Previn and Manne's My Fair Lady album, one of the most successful jazz records ever produced. He also performed on another of jazz's biggest hit albums, Eddie Harris and Les McCann's Swiss Movement, released in 1969. Vinnegar also performed at the famous Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, California, and Diggers in East Los Angeles in the late 1950s with drummer/pianist Don Joham along with other musicians. He moved to Portland, Oregon in 1986. In 1995, the Oregon State Legislature honored him by proclaiming May 1 Leroy Vinnegar Day.

Vinnegar died of a heart attack, at the age of 71, on August 3, 1999, in a hospital in Portland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leroy_Vinnegar
