A marvelous bandleader and organist as well as capable arranger, "Brother" Jack McDuff has one of the funkiest, most soulful styles of all time on the Hammond B-3. His rock-solid basslines and blues-drenched solos are balanced by clever, almost pianistic melodies and interesting progressions and phrases. McDuff began as a bassist playing with Denny Zeitlin and Joe Farrell. He studied privately in Cincinnati and worked with Johnny Griffin in Chicago. He taught himself organ and piano in the mid-'50s, and began gaining attention working with Willis Jackson in the late '50s and early '60s, cutting high caliber soul-jazz dates for Prestige. McDuff made his recording debut as a leader for Prestige in 1960, playing in a studio pickup band with Jimmy Forrest. They made a pair of outstanding albums: Tough Duff and The Honeydripper. McDuff organized his own band the next year, featuring Harold Vick and drummer Joe Dukes. Things took off when McDuff hired a young guitarist named George Benson. They were among the most popular combos of the mid-'60s and made several excellent albums. McDuff's later groups at Atlantic and Cadet didn't equal the level of the Benson band, while later dates for Verve and Cadet were uneven, though generally good. McDuff experimented with electronic keyboards and fusion during the '70s, then in the '80s got back in the groove with the Muse session Cap'n Jack. While his health fluctuated throughout the '90s, McDuff released several discs on the Concord Jazz label before succumbing to heart failure on January 23, 2001, at the age of 74.

Another Real Good 'Un is a latter-day Brother Jack McDuff session which finds the organist joined by tenor legend Houston Person, as well as (at various times) alto/tenor saxophonist Ron Bridgewater, trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, drummers Buddy Williams and Cecil Brooks III, and guitarists Randy Johnston and John Hart. It's one of McDuff's better comeback albums, as he keeps the groove pumping throughout the record, swinging soulfully and interacting nicely with the other soloists. 32 Jazz reissued the session in 1999, Savoy Jazz in 2003.

Prelude was a successful match of McDuff's small-combo organ jazz with big band arrangements by Benny Golson. In part, that was because the blend was well-executed, never fighting with or drowning out McDuff's organ. But it was also because the mixture made it stand out amidst the scads of organ jazz records being churned out in the early '60s. While a very young George Benson was in the core quartet on guitar, a dozen others supplemented the players, including trumpets, trombones, French horns, and saxophones. McDuff wrote about half the material, and while Golson was responsible for just one number, it's the standout title track, "Prelude." That nine-minute piece moves from an opening of almost classical orchestrated grand solemnity to a slow-bopping section dwelling on McDuff's mourning organ. Nothing else on the album matches it, but the rest is pretty good, sometimes leading off with other Golson orchestrations; Benson gets a chance to steal the solo spotlight for a bit in "Dig Cousin Will."

Very good compilation of 13 soul-jazz cuts from the Prestige vaults featuring the Hammond B-3 organ, recorded between 1959 and 1967. Some of the names (Shirley Scott, Jack McDuff, Richard "Groove" Holmes") are pretty well known to fans of the style, but others are not. It's also a useful disc because it has key sides on which McDuff, Larry Young, John Patton, and others were playing as sidemen to non-keyboardist leaders, and thus might be overlooked by collectors of the style. Willis Jackson's "Pool Shark" (with Carl Wilson on organ) and Trudy Pitts' ebullient run through "Take Five" are real groovers; Richard "Groove" Holmes' "Misty" was a Top Fifty pop hit and one of the few soul-jazz singles to hit the charts.

Review:

On the five tracks of Together Again!, recorded with three separate lineups in 1959-1960, the Willis Jackson-Jack McDuff-speared combo offers respectable early soul-jazz, if not too different from many other Prestige-overseen sessions of the early '60s. They show their bop chops to good advantage on "Three Little Words" and "Tu' Gether"; take a slightly bluesier groove on "Glad 'a See Ya'"; and slow way down for a make-out mood on the cover of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "It Might as Well Be Spring." It's the slow-walkin'-tempoed "This'll Get to Ya," though, that gives them their greatest chance to stretch out, lasting ten minutes, and adding Buck Clarke on conga to the standard sax-organ-guitar-bass-drums lineup. All of the tracks are included on the 2003 Prestige CD reissue that's also titled Together Again!, which is a little more complicated than the standard expanded CD reissue; it combines all the tracks from Together Again! and the Jackson-McDuff-helmed sequel, Together Again, Again, though the songs are sequenced in the order in which they were recorded, not the order in which they were presented on the original LPs.

A set of gritty electric funk and soulful blues, Down Home Style is an excellent showcase for Brother Jack McDuff's gripping, funky style. Inspired more by the tight grooves of Stax Records than bebop, Down Home Style features McDuff leading a small group through a number of R&B grooves, ranging from the stuttering "The Vibrator" and dirty funk of "Butter (For Yo Popcorn)" to the slow blues of "Memphis in June." Occasionally, the group is augmented by a punchy horn section, but the record is designed as a showcase for McDuff's wild, intoxicating Hammond organ, and he runs with the it, demonstrating every one of his tricks.

As a general rule, any derivation of the word "Twist" in a jazz album title from the early '60s is a clue that at best one can look forward to some campy fun. Gene Ammons' 1961 session Twistin' the Jug features not only the powerhouse tenor playing at the top of his form, but a killer set of sidemen featuring the great Hammond organist "Brother" Jack McDuff and conga player Ray Barretto. The results, particularly on the supple, funky title track and a Latinized, uptempo version of the Duke Ellington standard "Satin Doll," are surprisingly appealing. The album title is clearly an inappropriate marketing tool; anyone attempting to do the Twist to the opening track, a slowed-down, funky blues take on "Stormy Monday," would nod off halfway through. Still, bad album title or not, this is a fun, listenable early soul-jazz session featuring two of the greats of the field.

Brother Jack's organ is set amidst an amazing batch of orchestrations by Benny Golson, and the core of the group is Jack's combo with Red Hollway, George Benson, and Joe Dukes. Golson's arrangements are fantastic, and far from surpressing or overpowering the combo's funky jazz sound, they actually take it to a whole new level, and provide a beautiful platform from which Jack dives and screams on the Hammond B-3. Benson's guitar is amazing, and there's sections in here where he comps so hard and heavy that you won't believe they didn't use a sampler on the album! Cuts include "Scufflin", "Lexington Line", "What's Shakin", and "Silk & Soul".

At times, McDuff demonstrates how soul-jazz organ stars used to make albums back in their '60s heyday, playing then-current pop hits like "The Age of Aquarius" and the theme from Mission: Impossible (which, thanks to cinema, was a hit all over again in 1996 when this CD was made). Otherwise, this is another fine, home-cookin' soul-jazz session, with McDuff's Hammond B-3 burning at its usual low-intensity, high-blues-content level. Chris Potter dances around the organ on flutes, Andrew Beals and Jerry Weldon offer solid solos on alto and tenor respectively, and the rest of the Heatin' System runs the gamut from Latin to soul-deep grooves. Fans of the genre can buy with peace of mind.
