Craft Recordings’ Craft Latino imprint has released Fania Goes Psychedelic, a 15-song compilation featuring Latin soul and experimental gems from the legendary Fania catalogue, now available on major streaming and digital platforms.

Just as the Summer of Love and psychedelic rock was sweeping suburban America, another movement was happening in New York as Latino youth were rebelling against cultural norms and “experimenting with soul, R&B, Afro-Cuban dance rhythms, and English lyrics to make a sound all their own – a craze which became known as boogaloo,” shares Craft.

Founded in New York during 1964 by musician Jonny Pacheco and lawyer Jerry Masucci, the Fania music label “documented the New York salsa explosion of the 70s and established itself as the Latin equivalent of Motown”.

To commemorate this fruitful era and often overlooked period in music history, Craft Latino’s eclectic compilation pays tribute to artists like Ray Barretto, Pete Rodriguez, The Lebron Brothers and Eddie Palmieri, who made their mark on the 60s counterculture movement.

Fania Goes Psychedelic is a crate-digger and 60s music fan’s dream. Spanning all of the greatest Latin soul cuts of the era, the compilation also explores the influence of drug culture and psychedelia on Latino culture in America, from conguero and bandleader Ray Barretto’s instrumental ‘Acid’ to The Lebrón Brothers Orchestra’s catchy ode to cannabis, ‘Let’s Get Stoned’, off their 1968 LP, The Brooklyn Bums.

The Puerto Rican-born brothers brought their own flair to Latin music, fusing together the Motown soul of the era with Latin rhythms. As one of the flagship artists on another boogaloo label Cotique (that Fania acquired in 1971), The Lebrón Brothers were one of the finest Latin soul artists of the day. One of the brothers, Jose Lebron, is also responsible for giving salsa music its name, after his song ‘Salsa Y Control’.

Another former Cotique artist – singer, trombonist and pianist Johnny Colón – is also featured in the compilation with his single, ‘Boogaloo Blues’, off his 1966 debut LP of the same name that helped to popularize the genre.

One of the major highlights off Fania Goes Psychedelic is ‘Revolt/La Libertad Logico’ by the Grammy award-winning bandleader and pianist Eddie Palmieri, who was an artist under the storied label, Tico Records (acquired by Fania in 1974).

Other standouts include ‘Oh, That’s Nice’ by The King of Boogaloo”, Pete Rodriguez, ‘Problemas (Problems)’ off Joey Pastrana and his Orchestra’s 1968 LP, Hot Pastrana and Jimmy Sabater’s funky, Latin-tinged cover of Kool and The Gang’s ‘Kool It (Here Comes the Fuzz)’.

“These seminal works by young Latino artists were inspired by the socio-economic and political landscape around them in New York City and specifically in the ‘barrios’ during this historical time,” says Bruce McIntosh, VP of Latin Catalog for Craft Latino.

“These songs help document a moment in time that now, 50 years later, is as relevant and refreshing as ever. I’m proud that Craft Latino can be the steward of these recordings, which are such an important part of American musical history.”}

El espectro de artistas va desde conocidos como Bo Diddley, The Ventures o Eddie Cochran hasta los "unknown artist". Es invalorable esta colección ya que muchos de estos temas sólo fueron lanzados en simple y no han sido re-editados.

One of the best collections of Latin American music ever assembled, Nu Yorica Roots! compiles some of the funkiest Latin soul and, occasionally, traditional music recorded in the Big Apple during the 1960s and '70s. The disc definitely concentrates on groove tracks, with standout inclusions by Joe Cuba ("El Pito"), Ray Barretto ("Acid," "Together"), and Tito Puente ("Oye Como Va," "Tito on Timbales"). But Nu Yorica Roots! also salutes the more tribal, drum-centered facets of Latin music during the era, with Mongo Santamaria ("Druma Kuyi"), Eddie Palmieri ("My Spiritual Indian"), and Sabu Martinez ("The Oracle") paying homage to their Afro-Cuban roots with flair. Harvey Averne's swinging cover of "The Word" by the Beatles and Orchestra Harlow's dance novelty "Horsin' Up" are a bit silly (even if they're good representations of the Latin soul scene), but without exception, this compilation nails the late-'60s convergence of amazing Latin instrumentalists and more groove-centered black music around El Barrio in East Harlem. Though it's saying quite a bit, Nu Yorica Roots! is the finest compilation produced by the inestimably valuable reissue label Soul Jazz Records.

Una de las mejores colecciones de música latinoamericana jamás reunida, Nu Yorica Roots! recopila algunos de los temas más funk del soul latino y, ocasionalmente, de la música tradicional grabada en la Gran Manzana durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970. El disco definitivamente se concentra en temas de groove, con inclusiones destacadas de Joe Cuba ("El Pito"), Ray Barretto ("Acid"," Together") y Tito Puente ("Oye Como Va","Tito on Timbales"). Pero Raíces Nu Yorica! también rinde homenaje a las facetas más tribales y centradas en el tambor de la música latina durante la época, con Mongo Santamaria ("Druma Kuyi"), Eddie Palmieri ("My Spiritual Indian") y Sabu Martinez ("The Oracle") rindiendo homenaje a sus raíces afrocubanas con estilo. Little over 30 years ago, the R&B and rock'n'roll loving directorate of Chiswick Records decided that it might be fun to start a sister label, which did for the recordings of what was then a mere 20 years previously what Chiswick was doing for the more current stuff. Chiswick itself had sprung from small beginnings involving two men with a market stall full of golden oldies both common and rare, so this was not something that surprised too many people who witnessed the birth of this new reissue label which shared the name of one of the most famous imprints in rock'n'roll/R&B history and which, in 2010, still goes by the name of Ace Records.

VA • Shazam! and Other Instrumentals Written by Lee Hazlewood

One of the many hats worn by Lee Hazlewood is that of rock & roll instrumental pioneer. Working with guitarist Duane Eddy, he created a moving, grooving sound suited for wide screens and wide-open deserts, and soon their hits reverberated out from the pair's home base of Phoenix, Arizona, causing surf rock waves in Southern California and hot rod ravers elsewhere. Ace's 2016 compilation Shazam! collects 24 of these instrumentals, all written by Hazlewood and many produced by the pop maverick, too. Hazlewood had a cinematic ear rivaled only by arranger Jack Nitzsche and, unsurprisingly, they're responsible for the best moments here: singles that play as if all the splendor of a B movie were condensed into a 7" single. Compared to that, the cheerful, generic surfers can't help but pale, but even knockoffs of Eddy hits by the Rhythm Rockers and the Lively Ones showcase Hazlewood's knack for melodramatic melodies. Still, Shazam! is the most fun when it's overheated: when the studio orchestras swing with a smirk and the brass smears the tune, knowing that the feel itself is the hook.

Trabajando con el guitarrista Duane Eddy, creó un sonido conmovedor y groovedor adecuado para pantallas anchas y desiertos abiertos, y pronto sus éxitos reverberaron desde la base de operaciones del par en Phoenix, Arizona, causando olas de surf rock en el sur de California y ravers de hot rod en otros lugares. La compilación Shazam! de Ace para el 2016 recoge 24 de estos instrumentos, todos escritos por Hazlewood y muchos producidos por el inconformista pop, también. Hazlewood tenía un oído cinematográfico que sólo rivalizaba con el arreglista Jack Nitzsche y, como no podía ser de otra manera, son responsables de los mejores momentos aquí: sencillos que tocan como si todo el esplendor de una película de serie B se condensara en un sencillo de 7".
