Alan Haven • Organ Magic

Alan Haven (Born 1 April 1935, died 12 Jan 2016), Prestwich, Lancashire, United Kingdom) was an English, self taught, jazz organist. He married Miss World, Lesley Langley in the 60's.
Alan Haven enjoyed success with John Barry on the soundtracks to 1960s film classics including The Knack, Goldfinger, From Russia with Love and critical acclaim for his performances and recordings with jazz drumming supremo Tony Crombie. He further scored a surprise single hit with his recording of “Image”.
In 1969 and 1971 Haven recorded two albums for CBS, a mix of originals by Haven with his arrangements of covers. All benefiting from the distinctive Haven Lowrey Heritage keyboard sounds which he had been developing throughout the 1960s. “Haven For Sale” featured jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson and direction from Keith Mansfield. “St. Elmo’s Fire” saw Haven experiment more with the keyboards and its effects, also producing and including more originals than before. Both these LPs were released on a short-lived CD in 2010.

VA • Time To Fly - KPM 1000 Series Compilation [1970-76]

Soaring grooves from the legendary KPM Sound Library -- a set of tunes that sparkles with all the charm and glamour of early 70s air travel! The title and cover really fit the spirit of the music here -- as most of the tracks are upbeat and sky-flying -- the sorts of numbers that go way beyond the sleepier side of easy listening, and really show the way that Easy maestros of the 70s were picking up plenty of funky elements in their music! There's no hard funk tracks here -- as you might find on other sound library sets -- but there's definitely an undercurrent of groove, thanks to some well-chosen rhythms, strong use of electric bass, and an overall sense of flow in most of the orchestrations -- a feel that reminds us a lot of some of the excellent Brigade Mondaine compilations from a few years back. The package really offers up a different look than usual at KPM -- and the tunes are as classy as anything we might have loved years ago, on the legendary Sound Library collections. Titles include "Sun Lover", "The Great Outdoors", "Husky Birdsong", and "Towards The Sun" by Keith Mansfield; "Holiday People", "Soft Memories", "Gentle Breeze", "Summer Dreams", "Summer Season", and "Friendly Faces" by James Clarke; "Paradise Found" by Dick Doerschuk, "Silk Stream" by David Gold, "Busy Spectacle" and "Fun In The Sun" by Neil Richardson, "Sunseekers" by David Lindup, and "A Tender Touch" by Steve Gray.

That song is currently used during the opening credits of the show Pit Boss on Animal Planet, as well as backing music for the "Quick Hits" segment on the Sklarbro Country podcast. The Astro Daters' "Our Next Attraction" was featured prominently in two films by Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill and Grindhouse. A vocal version of Funky Fanfare entitled "House of Jack" was also recorded by James Royal in 1969. Another Mansfield composition, "National Pride," was the opening theme to the movie Fist of Fear, Touch of Death, which utilizes Mansfield's library music score, and as the logo jingle for CBS/Fox Video. A remix of the song was also used in the game, Saints Row: The Third.

VA • Unusual Sounds; The Hidden History of Library Music

In the heyday of low-budget television and scrappy genre filmmaking, producers who needed a soundtrack for their commercial entertainments could reach for a selection of library music: LPs of stock recordings whose contents fit any mood required.

Unusual Sounds is a deep dive into a musical universe that has, until now, been accessible only to producers and record collectors; a celebration of this strange industry and an examination of its unique place at the nexus of art and commerce.

The perfect companion to the David Hollander curated book Unusual Sounds: The Hidden History of Library Music (out now on Anthology Editions), these 18 spliced, conventions dispensed with, and oftentimes hybrid music of astonishing complexity was produced. Elements of rock, jazz, soul, even twentieth-century avant-garde composition were all utilized, and no stone was left unturned. As a result, some of the best library music defies all categorization, reflecting the individualistic quirks and artistry of the various musicians who made it.

///////

Alan Hawkshaw • Mo'Hawk

Like many an active British session player in the 1960s and 1970s, Alan Hawkshaw, in addition to playing on many records by stars, did some recording as part of studio-only bands and for music library albums. Mo'Hawk selects 20 such tracks from 1967-1975, emphasizing ones that put his soul-rock-jazz Hammond organ to the fore. Some were credited to bands when first released -- four to the Mohawks, one to the Salon Band, and one to Rumplestiltskin. But the rest evidently come from music library albums for Keith Prowse Music (though the liner notes don't give precise details on the origination of some tracks), which were heard by few back when they were recorded, and not always even used in TV or cinema. Hawkshaw is a very good organist, but this material does betray its origins as pieces that were, after all, often hastily composed for cheap budget albums or as incidental background music to be considered for movies and television. As a consequence, it's largely generic party music from various phases of Swinging London, albeit gutsier and more soulful than much other such music that made its way into period films. And while Hawkshaw plays his parts with some aplomb, when you have this sort of material (mostly written by Hawkshaw, alas), it isn't going to give Georgie Fame sleepless nights. Various shades of easy listening, soul, funk, jazz, and pop-psychedelia make their way into the tracks, none of the songs standing out as work that transcends the background context for which they were originally crafted.

///////
