Chico Hamilton • Chico Hamilton Trio
Review by Michael G. Nastos
Chico Hamilton's earliest bands in a trio setting featured two fine rising stars of jazz guitar in Howard Roberts and Jim Hall. With the always exceptional George Duvivier playing bass throughout, these three-piece bands laid a foundation for many of Hamilton's more famous groups in the '60s that sported sidemen Larry Coryell and Gabor Szabo. There are hints of the hardcore jazz swing and Latin boogaloo amalgam that Hamilton would perfect, but for this compilation of recordings originally for the Pacific Jazz label, you hear his immaculate work on brushes, more prevalent than his sticks, although many tunes combine the two as he switches off. The eight tracks with the refined playing of Roberts move from a delicate, tasteful version of "Broadway," through the slow, somewhat abstract "Street of Drums," and the ballad "What Is There to Say?" But then the pace picks up with the quick "Nuttye" reinforced by backdrop scat, and the bass-led bop-to-funk "Buddy Boo," where Hamilton's developing style is emerging. Rumbling and tribal drums for the late-night "Uganda" buoys the patient guitar of Roberts, while the two-minute shortie "Lollypop" is a delicious call and response bopper. As polished as the playing of Roberts is, the sessions with the brilliant Jim Hall are the gems of the set, with all of the compositions penned by Duvivier. "Autumn Landscape" is a bit somber and regretful, while "Porch Light" reads angular à la Thelonious Monk, with the guitarist stepping up. A unique, fluid, and dynamic voice at this stage of his career, Hall holds sway in a consistent mezzo piano volume for the bop-tinged "Blues on the Rocks" before Hamilton's deft solo on brushes, but with the wire flanges plays his tom-toms in ultra melodic and inventive fashion for "Skynned Strings." An entry point recording for Chico Hamilton, it displays his savory good common sense well before being more trend- and fashion-conscious, as psychedelia and fusion took over commercialized jazz. What needs to be recognized is that Hamilton did not so much assimilate the trends, but modified and adapted his music to the sign of the times and his own unique talents. This LP represents him at a more innocent time, when jazz was not so adulterated by more popular forms, and it's a fine West Coast-style time capsule for the era.

John Lewis • Jazz Abstractions
Review
by Scott Yanow
Although John Lewis is listed as the leader (this album's alternate title is "John Lewis Presents Contemporary Music"), the pianist does not actually appear on this record and only contributed one piece ("Django"). On what is very much a Gunther Schuller project, Schuller composed "Abstraction" and was responsible for the adventurous three-part "Variants on a Theme of John Lewis (Django)" and the four-part "Variants on a Theme of Thelonious Monk (Criss-Cross)"; Jim Hall contributed "Piece for Guitar & Strings." One of the most successful third stream efforts, this LP combines avant-garde jazz with aspects of classical music. Among the more notable stars, altoist Ornette Coleman is on "Abstraction" and "Criss Cross" (both of which have been reissued in his Rhino CD box) and multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy is on both of the "Variants." Other musicians in the eclectic cast include guitarist Hall, bassist Scott LaFaro, pianist Bill Evans, and several classical string players. This is very interesting music.

Bill Harris • The Soul Of Jazz
This a rare and dynamic session, recorded by Rudy van Gelder in 1958, features an amazing All Stars cast. Essentially, it showcases Bill Harris playing alongside Joe Wilder, Bobby Jaspar, Pepper Adams, Eddie Costa, George Duvivier and Art Taylor. These musicians truly display the essence of jazz and hence the album’s title is so very appropriate. The sound even though ripped from a well-loved old vinyl still comes across ‘alive and fresh’ even by today’s standards. The concept of this LP is masterminded by the arrangements and conducting skills of Billy Ver Plank. The choices of tunes are very complimentary and blend well, all the while giving the players plenty of room to solo. Well Recommended.
Generally speaking, the men on the date fall into either a late swing or neo-modern period, as to their particular improvisatory allegiances. Yes, all bear the same "pure" approach to their performance of jazz. Bill Harris, veteran trombone star of the 1940's and the Woody Herman band has been a "preaching" jazzman of great fame for many years. Joe wilder, the early modern trumpet star, sparkles here with his growls, his various muses, and that unbelievably pure bell-tone while blowing a modern cascade of notes. Bobby Jaspar, Belgian import who has come to fame with J.J. Johnson and other combos on both tenor and flute, he is a "wailer" who plays in the Coltrane-Sims tradition these days. Pepper Adams, deserving of his nickname, bursts fierily throughout the proceedings. He is a Detroit export who rose to fame with Kenton, and has recently led his own combo in New York City. Eddie Costa, vibist and pianist once again proves his prowess as a tasty and ever-swinging keyboard man. George Duvivier can only be described as a "Rock" in a rhythm section ... with both beat, intonation, and "life" that are impeccable. Art Taylor, a usually intrepid bopper, illustrates his quieter moods here, lapsing into the more normal "popping" style he has become noted for on two tracks. Basically, the tunes are simple harmonic changes, with tried harmony, open voiced for the horns, and usually ending with the traditional "Amen" chord resolution. The solo-work, in almost every case stays fairly close to the simple diatonic harmonies, yet conveying a combined "preaching" and "funky blues" feel. ~ Extract from Liner Notes by H. Alan Stein.

En esencia, muestra a Bill Harris tocando junto a Joe Wilder, Bobby Jaspar, Pepper Adams, Eddie Costa, George Duvivier y Art Taylor.

Joe Williams • American Blues Legends
Review
by Rovi Staff
Having
the Blues Under a European Sky is a collection of some very engaging
live performances Joe Williams gave in Europe in the early '70s -- a
decade after embarking on a solo career. Williams had risen to fame as
Count Basie's vocalist, and the first seven tracks (featuring small
groups of varying personnel led by the wonderful pianist Ellis Larkins)
show Williams' supreme artistry as a jazz singer. The arrangements are
wide open and rich in vocal improvisation. Williams reunites with the
Count Basie Orchestra on the last six tracks. These numbers find him in
marvelous voice, at the top of his game, and still swinging his unique
blend of sophisticated jazz blues at a time when most ears in the world
were tuned to rock.

Tubby Hayes-Clark Terry • New York Sessions
Review by Scott Yanow
Tubby Hayes was a superior tenor saxophonist from England who played in the tradition of Zoot Sims and Al Cohn, with just a dash of Johnny Griffin and early John Coltrane. This CD finds Tubby holding his own with a top-notch swinging rhythm section (pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Duvivier, and Dave Bailey) along with guests Clark Terry (on four of the ten selections) and vibraphonist Eddie Costa (on three songs). Whether it be an up-tempo rendition of "Airegin" or a tender "You're My Everything," Tubby Hayes shows that he is an underrated legend. The original six selections are joined by four equally rewarding unreleased performances.

Mundell Lowe • Themes From Mr. Lucky The Untouchables And Other TV Action Jazz
Born
in Laurel, Mississippi, Mundell left home at the age of thirteen. After
working in Nashville, he found his way to Bourbon Street in New Orleans
and the beginning of his jazz career. While serving in World War Il, he
met the influential John Hammond, who introduced him to Ray McKinley.
Mundell worked with McKinley’s band for a year and a half, developing
his distinctive instrumental style, and then moved on to work in New
York at Café Society and stints at the Village Vanguard and The Embers,
among others. Mundell worked with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Charlie
Parker, Helen Humes and Charles Mingus, to name but a few. These gigs
overlapped with an early morning TV show at NBC with Cy Coleman, “A Date
in Manhattan,” and later “The Kate Smith Hour” with Stan Getz, Doc
Severinsen, and Kai Winding.
From the early fifties to the
mid-Sixties, he was an active performer, working with George Duvivier on
bass and Ed Shaughnessy on drums in Dave Garroway’s “Today Show” studio
band. He also played with the extraordinary pianist Hank Jones when
they both worked in the NBC and CBS orchestras of the early Fifties.
After seventeen years at NBC as a guitarist and arranger, Lowe was
transferred to the News and Special Events Department to work as a
composer.
Mundell moved to Los Angeles, California, Christmas
1965 actually, he left to visit some friends, and never went back to New
York! He met Jackie Cooper, then-head of Screen Gems, and began the
West Coast phase of his career composing music for some of their
television and film properties. Lowe augmented his TV and film work with
making his own LPs as well as two successful projects with noted
singers Sarah Vaughan (‘After Hours”) and Carmen McRae (‘Bittersweet”).
Even
though he had made special appearances with Peggy Lee and the White
House, toured Japan with Benny Carter several times, and was a regular
performer at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Mundell found he was spending
more time writing than playing, which he found frustrating. He made up
his mind to turn that around and, during the 1980s, he stepped out of
the studio world of film and television and returned to performing, the
first love of his long and rich musical career.
Mundell's current
schedule is no less active. In the last few years he has traveled the
globe as a concert performer, worked the States with his own quintet,
and has made several trips to New York to work with Ron Carter, Al
Foster, Bill Mays, and Ray Drummond. He tours with the André Previn Trio
(composed of Previn, the late Ray Brown, and Lowe), as well as the
Great Guitars with the late Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, and Tal Farlow.
Mundell also has been busy in recording studios lately, having recorded
two albums for Telarc with the André Previn Trio, one for Phillips with
Kiri Te Kanawa, and two albums for Fresh Sounds with Teté Montoliu.

Nacido
Coleman, "A Date in Manhattan", y más tarde con "The Kate Smith Hour"
amigos y nunca volvió a Nueva York. Conoció a Jackie Cooper, entonces
Foster, Bill Mays y Ray Drummond.

Eddie ''Lockjaw Davis'' - Buddy Tate - Coleman Hawkins - Arnett Cobb • Very Saxy
Review by Scott Yanow
Tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and his quartet (which includes organist Shirley Scott, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Arthur Edgehill) welcome three immortal tenors (Coleman Hawkins, Arnett Cobb and Buddy Tate) to what became a historic and hard-swinging jam session. On three blues, an original based on the chord changes of "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Lester Leaps In," the four tenors battle it out and the results are quite exciting. The spirited music on this memorable LP will hopefully be reissued on CD eventually, for the performances live up to their great potential.

Vic Dickenson • Ding Dong
Review by Scott Yanow
This 1999 CD reissue brings back an earlier LP (simply titled Vic Dickenson Quintet), adding three previously unheard alternate takes to the original eight-song program. A sideman during most of his career, the great trombonist Dickenson had several opportunities to record as a leader during 1974-76. Dickenson, tenor-saxophonist Buddy Tate (who plays baritone on "Penthouse Serenade"), pianist Red Richards, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Oliver Jackson perform seven standards (which include such offbeat choices as "Isle of Golden Dreams," "Black Bottom" and "Five O'Clock Whistle") plus Vic's "Ding Dong." Dickenson's sly wit is very much in evidence on this strong set, the trombone/tenor blend is quite appealing and the date is easily recommended to small group swing collectors.

Nat Adderley • Sayin' Somethin'
Review
by Scott Yanow
Cornetist Nat Adderley was at the peak of his powers in the mid-1960's. This Atlantic issue has four quintet numbers with tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson (three also feature pianist Herbie Hancock) plus four tunes in which Nat is part of an 11-piece group. He plays quite well on such songs as "Cantaloupe Island," "Hippodelphia," "Gospellete" and even the then-current pop tune "Call Me," making this set one to search for.

Paul Desmond • Take Ten
Review by Richard S. Ginell

One
of his first recording sessions after he returned to the scene
following a rather severe jail sentence was this tribute to Nat King
Cole. As it turned out, the quartet date with pianist Wynton Kelly,
bassist George Duvivier and drummer Rudy Collins was quickly forgotten
as Ammons recorded some more commercial material and this set was not
released for the first time until 1985. Ammons is in excellent form on
such ballads as "Nature Boy," "Lush Life," "Sweet Lorraine" and "The
