The Ventures • Only Hits [Expanded Edition]

Biography by John Bush
Not the first but definitely the most popular rock instrumental combo, the Ventures scored several hit singles during the 1960s -- most notably "Walk-Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-O" -- but made their name in the growing album market, covering hits of the day and organizing thematically linked LPs. Almost 40 Ventures' albums charted, and 17 hit the Top 40. And though the group's popularity in America virtually disappeared by the 1970s, their enormous contribution to pop culture was far from over; the Ventures soon became one of the most popular world-wide groups, with dozens of albums recorded especially for the Japanese and European markets. They toured continually throughout the 1970s and '80s -- influencing Japanese pop music of the time more than they had American music during the '60s.

The Ventures' origins lie in a Tacoma, Washington group called the Impacts. Around 1959, construction workers and hobby guitarists Bob Bogle and Don Wilson formed the group, gigging around Washington state and Idaho with various rhythm sections as backup. They recorded a demo tape, but after it was rejected by the Liberty Records subsidiary Dolton, the duo founded their own label, Blue Horizon. They released one vocal single ("Cookies and Coke"), then recruited bassist Nokie Edwards and drummer Skip Moore and decided to instead become an instrumental group.

Hi Fi in Focus
The Ventures went into the studio in 1959 with an idea for a new single they had first heard on Chet Atkins' Hi Fi in Focus LP. Released on Blue Horizon in 1960, the single "Walk-Don't Run" became a big local hit after being aired as a news lead-in on a Seattle radio station (thanks to a friend with connections). In an ironic twist, Dolton Records came calling and licensed the single for national distribution; by summer 1960, it had risen to number two in the charts, behind only "It's Now or Never" by Elvis Presley. After Howie Johnson replaced Moore on drums, the Ventures began recording their debut album, unsurprisingly titled after their hit single.

The Colorful Ventures
Two singles, "Perfidia" and "Ram-Bunk-Shush," hit the Top 40 during 1960-61, but the Ventures soon began capitalizing on what became a trademark: releasing LPs which featured songs very loosely arranged around a theme implied in the title. The group's fourth LP, The Colorful Ventures, included "Yellow Jacket," "Red Top," "Orange Fire" and no less than three tracks featuring the word "blue" in the title. The Ventures put their indelible stamp on each style of '60s music they covered, and they covered many -- twist, country, pop, spy music, psychedelic, swamp, garage, TV themes. (In the '70s, the band moved on to funk, disco, reggae, soft rock and Latin music.) The Ventures' lineup changed slightly during 1962. Howie Johnson left the band, to be replaced by session man Mel Taylor; also, Nokie Edwards took over lead guitar with Bob Bogle switching to bass.

The Ventures Play Telstar, The Lonely Bull
One of the few LPs not arranged around a theme became their best-selling; 1963's The Ventures Play Telstar, The Lonely Bull featured a cover of the number one instrumental hit by the British studio band the Tornadoes and produced by Joe Meek. Though their cover of "Telstar" didn't even chart, the album hit the Top Ten and became the group's first of three gold records. A re-write of their signature song -- entitled "Walk-Don't Run '64" -- reached number eight that year. By the mid-'60s however, the Ventures appeared to be losing their touch. Considering the volatility of popular music during the time, it was quite forgivable that the group would lose their heads-up knowledge of current trends in the music industry to forecast which songs should be covered. The television theme "Hawaii Five-O" hit number four in 1969, but the Ventures slipped off the American charts for good in 1972. Instead, the band began looking abroad for attention and -- in Japan especially -- they found it with gusto. After leaving Dolton/Liberty and founding their own Tridex Records label, the Ventures began recording albums specifically for the Japanese market. The group eventually sold over 40 million records in that country alone, becoming one of the biggest American influences on Japanese pop music ever.

Nokie Edwards left the Ventures in 1968 to pursue his interest in horse racing for a time, and was replaced by Gerry McGee; though he returned by 1972, Mel Taylor left the group that year for a solo career, to be replaced by Joe Barile. (Taylor also returned, in 1979.) By the early '80s, the Ventures' core quartet of Wilson, Bogle, Edwards, and Taylor could boast of playing together for over 20 years. Edwards left the band for good in 1984 (replaced again by Gerry McGee), and the following decades were marked by the deaths of several of the group's earliest members -- Mel Taylor died midway through a Japanese tour in 1996 (replaced by his son Leon), co-founder Bob Bogle died in 2009, and Nokie Edwards himself died in 2018 -- yet latter-day incarnations of the Ventures continued to pack venues around the world.

Hi Fi in Focus

The Colorful Ventures

Surfing Spacemen • Mental Pictures

The Surfing Spacemen – Mental Pictures
This is CD number two from Finland's Surfing Spacemen. It's quite different from the first, more polished and farther into the go-go scene. Images of bachelor pads and space age spy films abound. Some very good writing and arranging, coupled with strong musicianship and interesting blends of sounds. Real beat and groovy.

The Fathoms • Fathom This!

The Fathoms are an on-and-off again Boston surf instrumental group spear-headed by "Cranky" Frankie Blandino. Although often fronting Rockabilly or Western Swing bands, Frankie took the post-"Pulp Fiction" plunge and assembled the first Fathoms lineup in the mid-90's, releasing a debut disc "Fathomless" on the Atomic Beat label in 1996. This (currently out of print and very expensive on the aftermarket) disc was a total retro trip back to the sound and spirit of reverb-drenched, sax-honking west coast surf instrumentals circa 1963. (The sax was provided by ex-Barrence Whitfield and the Savages cohort Dave Sholl, who also had a concurrent instrumental project going called Four Piece Suit.) Frankie demonstrated an uncanny ability to write great surf melodies, some of which almost sounded like instrumental versions of songs bearing lyrics. A great example from the first disc is "Shadow Of A Doubt"--it sounds like a lost latin-tinged, pre-British Invasion single from the likes of Bobby Vee, but with Frankie's Fender Jaguar providing the melody line instead of a voice.

Sometime after releasing a nearly-as-fine follow up disc called "Overboard" in 1998, the Fathoms were put on ice as Frankie focused on his other projects. In about 2005 though, a new lineup of Fathoms was resurrected and began gigging in the Boston area. We finally have a studio project from this band in the form of "Fathom This!", and it's clear from the get-go that Mr. Blandino has lost none of his ability to churn out those memorable surf melodies and whammy-bar workouts. Other than Frankie, Dave Sholl is the only returning musician from the old days, adding his familiar gritty sax riffs to around half of the tunes here. Former Fathoms (and Cranktones) bassist Johnny Sciascia shows up with a "mastered by" credit, but otherwise it's a new rhythm section and second guitarist driving the proceedings behind Frankie's leads and tasteful instrumental coloring, which even includes piano and organ on a song or two.

The fourteen song menu has a smattering of strictly-surf-sounding songs, but "Overboard" demonstrated a branching out to other instrumental styles, and that trend is continued here abundantly. Throughout the disc, one can spot non-surf influences such as the Shadows ("Dark Secret" and part of "Pony Express"), Les Paul crossed with Boots Randolph ("Leap Froggin'), Davie Allan & The Arrows (the FuzzRite pedal is switched on for "Rat Bike") The T-Bones ("Tail Waggin'") and Duane Eddy ("Mimi's Theme" and part of "Pony Express"). The Latin stylings demonstrated in previous Fathoms songs such as "Turquoise Blue (And Primer Gray) " or "El Toro" are reflected here in "Panito".There's another "wasn't that a song from Bobby Vee?" moment with "She's The One".Trumpet shows up for the first time on a Fathoms song with "The Palomino", which could have accompanied a horse-galloping scene from a Sergio Leone spaghetti western.

This is a rousing, uptempo menu of instrumental stylings that are, above all, just plain fun to listen to, and stand as a further illustration of the quality one can expect when the Fathoms name is attached to something. This disc comes highly recommended for those with who get a kick out of retro-sounding instrumentals. Welcome back, Fathoms---missed ya!

¡te he echado de menos!

The Madeira • Ancient Winds

The Madeira plays surf music born of screaming wind over the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert, deafening echoes of waves pounding the Gibraltar Rock, joyous late-night gypsy dances in the small towns of Andalucia, and exotic cacophony of the Marrakesh town square. It is the surf music of the millennia-old Mediterranean mysteries.

Band Biography
The Madeira began in 2004 in Indianapolis, IN. The band features Ivan Pongracic on lead guitar, the founder of the 1990s surf music icons the Space Cossacks; Patrick O'Connor on rhythm guitar, the founder of the Indy space-surf mavens Destination: Earth!; Dane Carter on drums; and Todd Fortier on bass. The Madeira have released five CDs: “Sandstorm” (2005), “Ruins” EP (2006), “Carpe Noctem” (2008), “Tribal Fires” (2012) and "Sonic Cataclysm - Live" (2014). They've played all around the US, including three California tours as well as shows on the East Coast and in the South, though they primarily play in the Indiana/Illinois/Ohio/Michigan/Wisconsin area. They headlined the third and final night of the 2009 Surfer Joe Festival in Livorno, Italy, followed by a 10-day Italian tour. UK's Pipeline magazine, the leading surf/instrumental-rock fanzine in the world, selected “Carpe Noctem” Album of the Year in 2008, and “Sandstorm” and “Tribal Fires” as runners-up for the Album of the Year in 2006 and 2012, respectively. NUVO Indianapolis Weekly paper included "Carpe Noctem" in their April 2014 article "100 Best Hoosier Albums Ever," among albums by music legends Wes Montgomery, the Jackson Five and John Mellencamp. Dick Dale & His Del-Tones • Surfer's Choice

Artist Biography by Steve Huey
Dick Dale wasn't nicknamed "King of the Surf Guitar" for nothing: he pretty much invented the style single-handedly, and no matter who copied or expanded upon his blueprint, he remained the fieriest, most technically gifted musician the genre ever produced. Dale's pioneering use of Middle Eastern and Eastern European melodies (learned organically through his familial heritage) was among the first in any genre of American popular music, and predated the teaching of such "exotic" scales in guitar-shredder academies by two decades. The breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique was unrivaled until it entered the repertoires of metal virtuosos like Eddie Van Halen, and his wild showmanship made an enormous impression on the young Jimi Hendrix. But those aren't the only reasons Dale was once called the father of heavy metal. Working closely with the Fender company, Dale continually pushed the limits of electric amplification technology, helping to develop new equipment that was capable of producing the thick, clearly defined tones he heard in his head, at the previously undreamed-of volumes he demanded. He also pioneered the use of portable reverb effects, creating a signature sonic texture for surf instrumentals. And, if all that weren't enough, Dale managed to redefine his instrument while essentially playing it upside-down and backwards -- he switched sides in order to play left-handed, but without re-stringing it (as Hendrix later did).

Dick Dale was born Richard Monsour in Boston in 1937; his father was Lebanese, his mother Polish. As a child, he was exposed to folk music from both cultures, which had an impact on his sense of melody and the ways string instruments could be picked. He also heard lots of big band swing, and found his first musical hero in drummer Gene Krupa, who later wound up influencing a percussive approach to guitar so intense that Dale regularly broke the heaviest-gauge strings available and ground his picks down to nothing several times in the same song. He taught himself to play country songs on the ukulele, and soon graduated to guitar, where he was also self-taught. His father encouraged him and offered career guidance, and in 1954, the family moved to Southern California.

At the suggestion of a country DJ, Monsour adopted the stage name Dick Dale, and he began performing in local talent shows, where his budding interest in rockabilly made him a popular act. He recorded a demo song, "Ooh-Whee Marie," for the local Del-Fi label, which was later released as a single on his father's new Deltone imprint and distributed locally. During the late '50s, Dale also became an avid surfer, and soon set about finding ways to mimic the surging sounds and feelings of the sport and the ocean on his guitar. He quickly developed a highly distinctive instrumental sound and found an enthusiastic, ready-made audience in his surfer friends. Dale began playing regular gigs at the Rendezvous Ballroom, a once-defunct concert venue near Newport Beach, with his backing band the Del-Tones; as word spread and gigs at other local halls followed, Dale became a wildly popular attraction, drawing thousands of fans to every performance. In September 1961, Deltone released Dale's single "Let's Go Trippin'," which is generally acknowledged to be the very first recorded surf instrumental.

Surfer's Choice
"Let's Go Trippin'" was a huge local hit, and even charted nationally. Dale released a few more local singles, including "Jungle Fever," "Miserlou," and "Surf Beat," and in 1962 issued his (and surf music's) first album, the groundbreaking Surfer's Choice, on Deltone. Surfer's Choice sold like hotcakes around Southern California, which earned Dale a contract with Capitol Records and national distribution for the album. Dale was featured in Life magazine in 1963, which led to appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and the Frankie/Annette film Beach Party. He also released the follow-up LP King of the Surf Guitar and went on to issue three more albums on Capitol through 1965. During that time, he developed a close working relationship with Leo Fender, who kept engineering bigger and better sound systems in response to Dale's appetite for louder, more maniacally energetic live performances.

Surf music became a national fad, with groups like the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean offering a vocal variant to complement the wave of instrumental groups, all of which were indebted in some way to Dale. But in 1964, the British Invasion stole much of surf's thunder, and Dale was dropped by Capitol in 1965. He remained a wildly popular local act, but in 1966 he was diagnosed with rectal cancer, which forced him to temporarily retire from music. He beat the disease, however, and soon began pursuing other interests: owning and caring for a variety of endangered animals, studying martial arts, designing his parents' dream house, and learning to pilot planes. In 1979, a puncture wound suffered while surfing off Newport Beach led to a pollution-related infection that nearly cost him his leg; Dale soon added environmental activist to his resumé. In addition to all of that, he performed occasionally around Southern California throughout the '70s and '80s.

In 1986, Dale attempted to mount a comeback. He first recorded a benefit single for the UC-Irvine Medical Center's burn unit (which had helped him recuperate from potentially serious injuries), and the following year appeared in the beach movie send-up Back to the Beach. The soundtrack featured a duet between Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughan on the Chantays' surf staple "Pipeline," which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental. In 1991, Dale did a guest spot on an album by the San Francisco-based Psychefunkapus, and a successful Bay Area gig got him signed with Hightone Records.

Tribal Thunder
The album Tribal Thunder was released in 1993, but Dale's comeback didn't get into full swing until "Miserlou" was chosen as the opening theme to Quentin Tarantino's blockbuster 1994 film Pulp Fiction. "Miserlou" became synonymous with Pulp Fiction's ultra-hip sense of style, and was soon licensed in countless commercials (as were several other Dale tracks). As a result, Tribal Thunder and its 1994 follow-up, Unknown Territory, attracted lots of attention, earning positive reviews and surprisingly strong sales. In 1996, he supported the Beggars Banquet album Calling Up Spirits by joining the normally punk- and ska-oriented Warped Tour.

Spacial Disorientation
Adding his wife and young drum-playing son to his band, Dale refocused on touring over the next few years. He finally returned with a new CD in 2001, Spacial Disorientation, issued on the small Sin-Drome label. Dale stepped away from his recording career after that release, but he continued to play out frequently, even as he struggled with myriad health problems, including diabetes, rectal cancer, and heart and kidney disease. Dale still had a busy schedule of concert dates on his schedule when he died on March 16, 2019, at the age of 81.

Langhorns • Langhorns

This Swedish band seems to be the first to do justice to surf instrumentals, while their countrymen focus on California beach music a la the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. This advance disc is loaded with very strong originals that conjure images of the outdoors, and covers that are uniquely arranged and performed. In this day of too many covers of tunes like Penetration, it's nice to find original reinventions that are at once reverent to the source and identifiably new. Much of the guitar work here is nearly liquid, not reverbed surf, but fluidly flowing, with notes almost blending one to another. I'm impressed.
Langhorns started playing in the summer of 1995 as a result of the band members irresistible urge to do at least something right with their lives.
The original members were Michael Sellers, guitar and Martin Berglund,
bass guitar. After a couple of rehearsals they decided it was time to do what many rock musicians find the hardest - to find a drummer that not only could play the drums, but was a nice guy also. They ended up with a compromise - Rikard Swardh.
After playing surf-instrumentals at various clubs and parties Langhorns went into the legendary studio "Studion" two days summer 1997, assisted by producer Magnus Borjesson and technician Martin Hennel. This resulted in the debut "Langhorns", released feb 28 - 1998 on Bad Taste Records. It was followed up by gigs all around Sweden (ok, southern Sweden) and in June the band played at Hultsfredsfestivalen.
Since the release people are slowly but surely realizing the thrill of listening to the CD - stuffed with good vibrations and both old and new waves.
The second album "Club Gabardino" was completed during spring 1999 and
is now available for demanding music lovers around the Globe. "Club Gabardino" recorded May 16-18 this time produced by Michael Sellers and Martin Hennel features a new approach to the genre, best described as "Latino Pimp Twang".
It contains 13 original tracks and one cover and you will be surprised to hear that the sound of Langhorns now has reached totally new dimensions. The original dry reverbed delay sound that used to be the trademark of the band is now spiced up with a sweaty horn section and teasing wah wah guitars.

The Atlantics • Flight Of The Surf Guitar

The Atlantics are an Australian surf rock band founded in 1961. Initially, the band lineup consisted of drummer Peter Hood, bassist Bosco Bosanac, Theo Penglis on lead and rhythm guitar, and guitarist Eddy Matzenik. Matzenik was replaced by Jim Skaithitis while the band was still in its earliest stages. The band's claim to fame was as Australia's most successful of the genre. Most well known for their classic hit, "Bombora", their later recordings such as "Come On" are examples of 1960s garage rock. They were the first Australian rock band to write their own hits. In 2000 the group reformed with three of the original members, and continue to release new material and perform in concert. In 2013 the group celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their first album, Bombora and the eponymous single that was their first to chart. A European tour was organised to mark the occasion.

Martin Cilia (born 1958, Rochford, Essex, England) moved to Perth, Western Australia with his family in January 1968. Cilla is best known for his songwriting skills, and his membership in The Atlantics, where he performs on the guitar. Cilia played his first gig in a school hall in Morley High in 1972 with fellow students. He remembered playing songs by The Shadows, The Monkees, The Beatles, and Cat Stevens songs.

VA • Psycho Beach Party - OST

Okay all, grab your surfboards and your headphones - it's Psycho Beach Party! The film is adapted from the cult stage play, and while it only played in a limited release, the music should be anything but. With a dead-on perfect score by Ben Vaughn, accentuated with a few instrumental surfing songs, this is a definite guilty pleasure album that is perfect for driving along the beach, or playing at a BBQ.

Beginning with the "Main Title", any listener will immediately get a sense of this album. It's a rocking 1960s beach party score, with all of the classic instrumentation you would expect. The bass guitars, organs and percussion are all there. It's just knee-slapping toe-tapping fun, and it almost never ends. "Neenie's Famous Weenies" was used in the theatrical trailer for the film, and I can still picture the go-go girl shaking and bopping to the underscore. The last track, "P-S-Y-C-H-O (Psycho) End Title" is a great 1960s-style song that hints at the storyline (as all good narrative songs back then did), and even tosses in some beach sound effects to boot.

The songs are integrated between the score cues seamlessly, as they all are of the same tone. The surf-bands Los Straitjackets, The Halibuts, The Hillbilly Soul Surfers, Four Piece Suit, The Fathoms, and Man or Astro Man? all contribute to the album. One thing that stuck out when listening to this 40-minute long CD was that it flowed exceptionally well. It was so disappointing when the soundtrack ended that I had to play the whole thing again - I hadn't realized how much time had flown by! If you have any desire for music that harkens back to the Frankie & Annette beach party films, then by all means pick this album up. Released by Unforscene Music, Psycho Beach Party is definitely one party you don't want to miss out on.

Las bandas de surf Los Straitjackets, The Halibuts, The Hillbilly Soul Surfers, Four Piece Suit, The Fathoms y Man or Astro Man? colaboran en el álbum.

VA • Destination Beach - 30 Tunes For Dancing In The Sand

Summertime's here, and it's been so long since we've been to the beach to soak up the sun's healing rays and engage in a day of red-hot fun! Bear Family has a perfect new soundtrack to accompany your trip to the oceanfront: 30 tracks that are all about frolicking in the sand and working on your tan while relaxing on your favorite blanket. Familiar names are scattered throughout the compilation; after all, no one knew how to throw a beach party better than Frankie Avalon, and his handsome pals Bobby Darin, Bobby Vee, and Freddie Cannon are here too. But there are also killer obscurities by Buddy Skipper and The Jetty Jumpers, Wayne Hollers, Al Barkle, and Ray Doggett, while R&B sax wailers Big Al Sears and Freddie Mitchell blow up a honking sandstorm. After the sun goes down and a cool breeze begins to waft in off the water, The Danleers' dreamy 1958 doo-wop smash One Summer Night is a perfect choice for slow dancing under the stars. Even guitar mauler Link Wray gets into the act with a surprisingly melodic Summer Dream. Pack the cooler, bring plenty of sunscreen, and pop 'Destination Beach' into your portable CD player at the first opportunity. Even on the hottest summer afternoon, it's the coolest!
