Tommy Emmanuel, four-time winner of Australia's Best Guitarist Award, has helped bring the art of rock guitar down under to a higher awareness by bringing a sense of jazz improvisation into a mix that also includes blues, country, rock, classical, and Spanish music. After years as a popular sideman and ace songwriter, the two-time ARIA Award winner launched his solo career in 1988 with Up from Down Under. Several releases followed, notably 1993's critically acclaimed The Journey, which hit high on Gavin and Radio & Records NAC airplay charts. He has shown a mastery and affinity for both electric and acoustic axes, and has been singled out by the likes of notable musicians such as Chet Atkins -- with whom he recorded The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World in 1997 -- and Todd Rundgren, who called him an innovator on the instrument. Only appeared in 2001, followed by 2002's Endless Road (it was finally released in the U.S. three years later), 2005's Live One, and, in 2006, both Happy Hour (with Jim Nichols) and Mystery.

Although Emmanuel took a brief hiatus from the music industry at the end of 2007 for health reasons, that October he recorded all three nights of a residency at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, California. These recordings made up Center Stage, an acclaimed double-disc live set released in 2008. Equally well received was 2010's Little by Little, a comeback of sorts in the form of a double-studio album featuring a tasteful rendition of Carole King's "Tapestry." Arriving in 2011, All I Want for Christmas nodded in places to John Fahey's classic festive recordings, while 2013's The Colonel & the Governor saw him team up with the equally talented English guitarist Martin Taylor.

Two years later, he delivered the solo studio date It's Never Too Late on Sony, followed by 2016's holiday-themed Christmas Memories. Accomplice One, released in late 2017 on Thirty Tigers, was a landmark set. Emmanuel appeared with one of the best and widest-ranging lineups of string players and featured performers of his career, including Jason Isbell, Mark Knopfler, Rodney Crowell, Ricky Skaggs, David Grisman, Suzy Bogguss, and Jake Shimabukuro. In 2019, he paired with fellow guitarist John Knowles for Heart Songs. 2020's retrospective The Best of Tommysongs was a double-album of career highlights as well as five new songs written for the collection.

For the album 'Guitar Heroes', Joscho Stephan invited the guitarists Tommy Emmanuel, Biréli Lagrène and Stochelo Rosenberg into the studio. The result was a fascinating mixture of standards and original compositions that were not only rooted in swinging jazz, but also built a bridge to rock, pop and Latin music.
The desire for a live album with a similar concept quickly arose, which is now available. In addition to Stochelo Rosenberg and Biréli Lagrène, Olli Soikkeli and Richard Smith can also be heard. Together with Joscho's trio, 12 titles were selected from a total of 4 concerts. Swing a'la Django Reinhardt and Bossa rhythms are perfectly represented by the Dutch guitar legend Stochelo Rosenberg and the young Finnish guitar virtuoso Olli Soikkeli. Joscho Stephan is well known on the international guitar scene as one of the most creative gypsy-swing players. With a powerful tone and remarkable technical skills, he has an instantly recognizable voice on his instrument. He’s also not afraid to combine gypsy swing with a lot of different styles, like klezmer, pop or classical music.

One of Joscho’s longtime dreams has been to record an album of songs written by his “guitar heroes.” When he started to work on the project, he thought it would be even more fun to invite the “heroes” of the current guitar scene to the studio with him. So on this new record, Joscho is joined by three world-class guitarists — Australian guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel, Dutch gypsy swing icon Stochelo Rosenberg, and French “guitar phenomenon” Biréli Lagréne. There's an implicit sense of mutual admiration behind the titling of this album collaboration between two of the world's gifted -- and certainly most decorated -- fingerpicking guitarists. Named in relation to Emmanuel's status as an honorary Kentucky Colonel and Taylor's lettered English roots, The Colonel & The Governor is primarily a collection of the duo's favorite jazz standards and pop classics, delivered in a way that betrays not only their shared virtuosity, but also their sense of playfulness. In the immediate years leading up to this release, while Emmanuel's studio output has been relatively sparse -- bar the impressive 2010 solo album Little by Little and the 2011 John Fahey nod that was All I Want for Christmas -- Taylor has been more prolific, collaborating with such jazz luminaries as Frank Vignola and Alan Barnes. Although Emmanuel and Taylor are both notoriously comfortable in the art of genre-hopping, it's Taylor's gentle Django Reinhardt- and Stéphane Grappelli-influenced jazz heredity that forms the basis of this set. So even though we're occasionally given brief glimpses of Emmanuel's accomplished folk and country leanings -- mainly through his tasteful rhythm-cum-lead playing -- it's clear that jazz is the order of the day on this release. When the duo run through "Jersey Bounce" -- a '40s swing hit for Benny Goodman -- and the jazz standard "Bernie's Tune," it's equally clear that Emmanuel is more than at home in this territory. Among the pop material on display here is the duo's inventive take on the early-'60s Kathy Kirby hit "Secret Love." Built around Emmanuel's singular use of harmonics, it's a clear highlight of the disc. Elsewhere, Taylor contributes two original compositions to the album in the form of the tender ballad "True," and the addictive, Caribbean-influenced "Down at Cocomo's." More than anything it's the duo's sheer enthusiasm for guitar playing that resonates across this release, and although their audible nods of approval to each other's contributions can occasionally be distracting, this is an album that should impress any listener with guitar virtuosity high on their agenda.

Cuando el dúo interpreta "Jersey Bounce", un éxito de swing de los años 40 para Benny Goodman, y el estándar de jazz "Bernie's Tune", queda igualmente claro que Emmanuel se encuentra más que a gusto en este territorio. Entre el material pop que se muestra aquí está la inventiva del dúo en el éxito de Kathy Kirby de principios de los 60 "Secret Love". Construida en torno al singular uso de los armónicos por parte de Emmanuel, es un claro punto culminante del disco. Por otra parte, Taylor aporta dos composiciones originales al álbum en forma de la tierna balada "True" y la adictiva "Down at Cocomo's", de influencia caribeña. Más que nada, es el puro entusiasmo del dúo por tocar la guitarra lo que resuena en este lanzamiento, y aunque sus audibles asentimientos de aprobación a las contribuciones del otro pueden distraer ocasionalmente, este es un álbum que debería impresionar a cualquier oyente con el virtuosismo de la guitarra como prioridad.
