Vinnie Burke • All-Stars

Press reviews
"Originally schooled on violin and guitar, Vinnie Burke redirected his creative energies to contrabass out of necessity brought about by an accident at a factory day gig. The earlier instruments still informed the approach to his replacement, particularly in the areas of timbre and melody and Burke became a first call session man for a roster of east coast band leaders including Tal Farlow, Marian McPartland and singer Chris Conner. There were also opportunities to organize sessions. All-Stars and His String Jazz Quartet collects two of the three albums that Burke released under his name. Together, they present his substantial bull fiddle talents in a handful of stimulating contexts that also show him to have been an accomplished leader.

All-Stars benefits greatly from the presence of one of Burke’s closest associates, pianist Eddie Costa. The latter employed the bassist in his trio, and the rapport established in that context transfers directly the three sessions that comprise the original album. The majority of pieces are by a quartet that combines the pair with guitarist Jimmy Raney and drummer Joe Morello, on loan from the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The most adventurous piece, “Vin-Tin-Tin” juxtaposes a driving melodic figure that flirts with atonality with staggered solos. Another original, “Unison Blues” swaps in guitarist Joe Puma and drummer Jimmy Campbell for Raney and Morello without missing a beat. Three more tunes add tenorist Al Cohn and trombonist Urbie Green, but it’s the more streamlined ensembles that deliver the best results.

On String Jazz Quartet Burke explores an idea that his later employer Gerry Mulligan would borrow and expand on to significantly greater commercial success. The order of titular modifiers is important as the ensembles assembled are first and foremost jazz-grounded rather than classically inclined. Violinist Dick Wetmore, cellist Calo Scott, and guitarist Bobby Grillo join Burke as the core group. Kenny Burrell and Paul Palmieri guest as electric guitarists in a tune ratio of five to one. Lastly, there’s a kit-less Campbell, returning for six numbers to play “brushes on Manhattan telephone directory.” That last addition has gimmick written all over it, but his contributions actually bolster the bands’ rhythmic integrity, particularly on a delightfully fisheye version of “A Night in Tunisia.” Burke solos cogently and concisely on basically every piece and the disc’s generous 74+ minute duration flies by in a finger pluck, er, snap!!

Eddie Costa • Complete Trio

Biography by Ken Dryden
Eddie Costa emerged from an unlikely background into a heralded -- if too brief -- career in jazz. Born in a rural coal mining town, Costa studied piano with his brother Bill and developed a taste for the swing greats; later, exposure to Bud Powell turned him to bop. Self-taught on vibes, Costa became known as an excellent sight reader, which produced a lot of studio work. On piano, his trademark sound was the emphasis of the middle and lower registers while nearly ignoring the top two octaves. In addition to recording as a sideman with Tal Farlow, Woody Herman, Johnny Smith, the Bob Brookmeyer-Clark Terry Quintet, and Bill Evans, Costa led his own trio and quintet dates. Sadly, most of Costa's recorded output remains unavailable on CD, with the notable exception of the VSOP reissue of his Quintet LP. Costa died when his car careened off of a busy New York parkway in 1962.

Joe Puma ‎• East Coast Jazz

One of the best records ever from guitarist Joe Puma – a player who offered his talents as a sideman on many great sessions of the 50s, but who really shines here as a leader on his own! Puma's got a clean, clear, careful touch on the strings – one that reminds us a lot of Tal Farlow on his best Verve albums of the 50s – but with a sound that's even more focused, and which is often awash in these amazing harmonics! The record features a bit of extra rhythm guitar from Barry Galbraith – playing in a mode that's got a softer swing than a piano, which might get in the way of Puma – plus vibes from Don Elliott, bass from Vinnie Burke, and drums from Ted Sommer. The mix of vibes and two guitars is about as heavenly as you can imagine – light and fluid, but still with plenty of sharper notes on Puma's solos – and tracks include the originals "Loris", "A Little Rainy", and "Pumatic" – plus "What Is There To Say" and "Liza".

Tal Farlow • The Swinging Guitar Of Tal Farlow

Review by Scott Yanow
In the mid-'50s, guitarist Tal Farlow led one of his finest groups, a drumless trio with pianist Eddie Costa and bassist Vinnie Burke. The same band would record the album Tal a week or two later. With Burke contributing a constant walking bass, the interplay between Farlow and Costa is always exciting, whether they are playing unisons or trading off. This 1999 CD reissue not only has the original seven selections but "Gone With the Wind" (which was left off of the original LP due to lack of space) plus three full-length alternate takes that are basically on the same level as the masters. Among the highpoints are "Taking a Chance on Love," "Yardbird Suite," "Like Someone in Love," and Farlow's lone original, "Meteor," which utilizes the chord changes of "Confirmation." Hot bebop that is easily recommended.

Chuck Wayne • Tasty Pudding

Chuck Wayne's participation in some of the earliest bebop recordings have lead many to conclude that he was purely a bop-style guitar player. Yet on the recordings he made in the mid-1940s, first with the Billy Eckstine Band and later with Dizzy Gillespie, his swing-oriented guitar collides with the "new music" being played by the more modern musicians on the set. It was with George Shearing that Wayne had his greatest success, making a major contribution to the Shearing sound. This particular album reissues two sets cut by Wayne during the 1950s. The first, covering tracks 1-4 and 7-10, is from 1953 sessions with his Quartet featuring Zoot Sims and Brew Moore; the second session, made the following year with the John Mehegan Quartet, comprises the other four tunes. There are some standards along with seven originals, including five by Wayne. Words that can best be used to describe the latter are "innocuous," "pleasant," "nice background music." These arrangements could be heard in a hundred lounges and small clubs throughout the country during the years when this album was made. While there is virtually no inventiveness going on, the playing is entertaining. One quality that comes through with the Wayne guitar is its hornlike sound, which adds a dimension to his playing and is especially complementary when either Sims or Moore is soloing, as on "While My Lady Sleeps," "Side Walks of Cuba" and "Uncus." One exception to the ordinariness of the material is the arrangement of the Victor Young/Ned Washington masterpiece, "Stella by Starlight," where John Mehegan's piano and Wayne's guitar engage in interplay which comes close to being avant-garde. Several of the players at these sessions were from the upper echelons of jazz; it's regrettable they were not offered more interesting or challenging music to perform.

Vinnie Burke's String Jazz Quartet • Vinnie Burke's String Jazz Quartet

Burke played violin and guitar early in life, but he lost the use of his little finger in a munitions factory accident and switched to double bass. In the second half of the 1940s he played with Joe Mooney, Tony Scott, and Cy Coleman. Later, he played with the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra, Tal Farlow, Marian McPartland, Don Elliott, Vic Dickenson, Gil Mellé, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Mehegan, Chris Connor, Eddie Costa, and Bobby Hackett. He led his own band in 1956 and led small combos into the 1980s.

Tal Farlow • Tal

Artist Biography by Scott Yanow
Nearly as famous for his reluctance to play as for his outstanding abilities, guitarist Tal Farlow did not take up the instrument until he was already 21, but within a year was playing professionally and in 1948 was with Marjorie Hyams' band. While with the Red Norvo Trio (which originally included Charles Mingus) from 1949-1953, Farlow became famous in the jazz world. His huge hands and ability to play rapid yet light lines made him one of the top guitarists of the era. After six months with Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five in 1953, Farlow put together his own group, which for a time included pianist Eddie Costa. Late in 1958, Farlow settled on the East Coast, became a sign painter, and just played locally. He only made one record as a leader during 1960-1975, but emerged a bit more often during 1976-1984, recording for Concord fairly regularly before largely disappearing again. Profiled in the definitive documentary Talmage Farlow, the guitarist can be heard on his own records for Blue Note (1954), Verve, Prestige (1969), and Concord. He died of cancer July 25, 1998, at age 77.

Gil Melle Quartet • Gil's Guests

Review by Scott Yanow
Baritonist Gil Melle's recordings are usually a bit unusual and this CD reissue is no exception. Melle's nine compositions are performed by one of three sextet/septets featuring either Art Farmer, Kenny Dorham or Donald Byrd on trumpets, Hal McKusick or Phil Woods on alto, guitarist Joe Cinderella, bassist Vinnie Burke, drummer Ed Thigpen and sometimes either Julius Watkins on French horn or Don Butterfield on tuba. The charts are unpredictable and often dramatic, looking ahead toward a musical future that never occurred. Watkins takes solo honors during his three appearances.
