Barney Kessel • Workin' Out!

Review by Scott Yanow
For this lesser-known effort by Barney Kessel (reissued on a 1998 CD), the guitarist is heard shortly after he decided to forego his career in the studios and try to make a living playing jazz full-time. He formed a quartet that also included three now-obscure players: Marvin Jenkins on piano and occasional flute, bassist Jerry Good, and drummer Stan Popper. Kessel plays well during a program that is highlighted by Jenkins' "Good Li'l Man," "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," Ahmad Jamal's "New Rhumba," and the guitarist's own "Pedal Point." Nothing all that unusual occurs, but the music is fine modern mainstream jazz from the early '60s.

Barney Kessel • Easy Like

Review by Scott Yanow
Other than four songs apiece released by Onyx and Verve, the CD reissue of Easy Like, Vol. 1 has guitarist Barney Kessel's first sessions as a leader, performances which launched his longtime association with the Contemporary label. Augmented by two "new" alternate takes, the set features Kessel in boppish form with quintets in 1953 and 1956 featuring, either Bud Shank or Buddy Collette doubling on flute and alto. Kessel shows off the influence of Charlie Christian throughout the performances, with the highlights including "Easy Like," "Lullaby of Birdland," "North of the Border," and the accurately titled "Salute to Charlie Christian."

Gene Krupa And Buddy Rich • The Drum Battle At JATP

Review by Lindsay Planer
This set was initially issued as the 15th instalment in Norman Grantz's Jazz at the Philharmonic series of LPs, EPs, and 45s. As that highly collectible compilation of performances has been out of print since the 1960s, many of the volumes were later issued under the respective artists' name. As the title would imply, Drum Battle: Jazz at the Philharmonic features the artistry of the Gene Krupa Trio with Buddy Rich (drums) sitting in on a few numbers as well as the inimitable jazz scat vocalizations of Ella Fitzgerald on a hot steppin' and definitive "Perdido." Opening the disc is Krupa's trio with Willie Smith (alto sax) and Hank Jones (piano) providing a solid and singularly swinging rhythm section. While Smith drives the band, Krupa is front and center with his antagonistic percussive prodding. "Idaho" is marked with Jones' rollicking post-bop mastery as he trades solos with Smith and can be heard quoting lines from Monk before yielding to Smith. The cover of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" sparkles from beginning to end. Jones' opening flourish sets the tenure as Smith settles into a smoky lead, containing some nice syncopation and regal augmentation from Jones. Krupa primarily provides ample rhythm work on the emotive ballad. Smith's diversion into "Stormy Weather" is notable for exemplifying the lyrically improvisational nature of this combo. The tempo is significantly stepped up on a cover of Benny Goodman's "Flying Home," which is full of high-spirited playing and garners a sizable reaction from the audience. The lengthy "Drum Boogie" is one of Krupa's signature pieces and is greeted with tremendous enthusiasm. Buddy Rich climbs on board for a one-on-one duel with Krupa, whose styles mesh into a mile-a-minute wash of profound percussion. The duet segues into an inspired and free-form jam on "Perdido," with Fitzgerald belting out her lines with authority, class, and most of all, soul.

Barney Kessel • To Swing Or Not To Swing

Guitarist Barney Kessel's string of recordings for Contemporary in the 1950s included some of the finest work of his career. The unusual repertoire on this set -- which includes "Louisiana," "Indiana," and "12th Street Rag," along with four Kessel originals and more usual standards -- would by itself make this bop/cool set noteworthy. Add to that a very interesting lineup of players (trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, Georgie Auld or Bill Perkins on tenor, pianist Jimmy Rowles, the rhythm guitar of Al Hendrickson, bassist Red Mitchell, and Shelly Manne or Irv Cottler on drums) and some excellent showcases for Kessel, and the overall result is a recording highly recommended to fans of straight-ahead jazz.

Art Tatum Sextet • The Legendary 1955 Session

"Improbable as it may sound, the sextet was one of the largest groups that Art Tatum ever worked with; it may even be the largest for Tatum, who worked for most of his life with no accompaniment at all, towards the end showed a marked preference for a trio, but rarely ever appeared as one of six. The reasons are easy enough to surmise. Tatum, being a colossus, needed as much room as possible in which to operate, and the more other soloists there were to take solo time and to demand of Tatum the duties of an accompanist, the more Tatum must have felt like a thoroughbred on a light rein. For Tatum, when he worked with other musicians, would sometimes temper his genius with a little tact, for the sake of the cohesion of the performance as well as in deference to the egos of the other musicians involved. Now the listener never cared anything for all this.

Of the supporting musicians, the one with the longest list of battle honors was the founder of the vibes. Lionel Hampton, a musician who, having worked with both Armstrong and Tatum without exhibiting even a flicker of inhibition or loss of nerve, may therefore be said to have done and see everything there was to do and see. Harry Edison, who plays trumpet with Tatum, spent many years in the Basie band, where he perfected a personal manner which consists of paring down the content of every solo to the practical minimum. The rhythm players include Barney Kessel, who was one of the very first musicians to become associated with "Jazz at the Philharmonic", and the Granz recording labels. The drummer, Buddy Rich, is in his own way as remarkable a technical wizard as Tatum himself, although on the Tatum sides the demand for wizardry was limited. Instead Rich laid down a strong, solid beat, assisted by the bass playing of Red Callender." - Benny Green (From the original liner notes)

///////

Lester Young • Lester Young With The Oscar Peterson Trio

Review by Scott Yanow
Defying what has become conventional wisdom, tenor saxophonist Lester Young cut some of his greatest recordings in the 1950s -- that is, when he was reasonably healthy. On this wonderful effort with pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer J.C. Heard, Prez performs definitive versions of "Just You, Just Me" and "Tea for Two," and plays a string of concise but memorable ballad renditions: "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "Almost Like Being in Love," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "There Will Never Be Another You," and "I'm Confessin'." This is essential music from a jazz legend. [Some reissues augment the original dozen songs with a version of the good-humored "It Takes Two to Tango," which features Young's only recorded vocals, plus a rather unnecessary false start (on "I Can't Get Started," ironically), along with some studio chatter.]

Heard, Prez interpreta versiones definitivas de "Just You, Just Me" y "Tea for Two", y toca una serie de interpretaciones de baladas concisas pero memorables: "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "Almost Like Being in Love", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "There Will Never Be Another You" y "I'm Confessin'".

Barney Kessel • Some Like It Hot

Review
by Scott Yanow
The release of the movie Some Like It Hot served as a good excuse for guitarist Kessel to join together with Art Pepper (switching between alto, clarinet, and tenor), trumpeter Joe Gordon, pianist Jimmy Rowles, rhythm guitarist Jack Marshall, bassist Monty Budwig, and drummer Shelly Manne to interpret a variety of vintage numbers, most of which dated from the 1920s. Such tunes as "I Wanna Be Loved by You," "Runnin' Wild," "Down Among the Sheltering Palms," and "By the Beautiful Sea" are given fairly modern arrangements but still retain the flavor of the 1920s, and it's particularly interesting to hear Gordon and Pepper soloing on these ancient songs.

Art Tatum • The Genius of Keyboard

Review
by arwulf arwulf
The Genius of Keyboard is the title of a smart little Art Tatum anthology released in 1998 by the Giants of Jazz label. Perhaps unusually for Giants of Jazz, all 15 tracks come from the same source and were recorded within a relatively short span of time (1954-1956). The Genius of Keyboard is really a cousin to The Best of the Pablo Group Masterpieces, which might tell you that everything on this disc was recorded under the supervision of producer Norman Granz, and that Tatum's gifted session mates include trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison, saxophonists Benny Carter and Ben Webster, clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton and guitarist Barney Kessel. One of the two bassists on this collection is Red Callender, and three of the five drummers are Louie Bellson, Jo Jones and Buddy Rich. If you are wise or lucky enough to hear this great music, and then find yourself digging it deeply and feeling the need to obtain The Complete Pablo Group Masterpieces, do not doubt your instincts. Nor should you resist the inclination to experience the rest of the music recorded at these remarkable sessions near the end of Tatum's all-too-brief lifetime. This is what jazz is all about.

Luis Rivera • Filet of Soul + Las Vegas

Luis Rivera, born in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in Ohio, initially pursued psychology after graduating in 1948. However, his passion for music soon led him to leave his career as a clinical psychologist to fully embrace life as a musician.

As a pianist, Luis performed with Roy Milton’s band in Texas and later accompanied Billie Holiday at the Tiffany Club in Los Angeles in 1953. That same year, inspired by “Wild” Bill Davis’s organ sound, Luis adopted the Hammond organ and quickly gained recognition. He formed his first trio and performed at  major venues like the Oasis, Morocco, and the Keyboard in Beverly Hills, while also recording tracks for the Federal label.

In 1957, Luis recorded his first album, Las Vegas, under the direction of producer John Dolphin, released on his Cash label. The album featured a sextet of talented musicians, including Barney Kessel, and captured Rivera’s distinctive organ sound and repertoire from his Las Vegas performances.

In 1961, while enjoying a successful run at Dynamite Jackson’s Lounge, Luis recorded his second album for Imperial Records, Filet of Soul, showcasing a blend of blues and ballads. The lineup that included Anthony Ortega (alto and flute), Lorenzo Holden (tenor), and Herb Ellis (guitar).

Luis continued performing at prominent Los Angeles clubs like Marty’s, the Moulin Rouge, and the Trocadero, while also touring nationally. By 1965, after an engagement at Herb Jeffries’ Flamingo Room, details about his career and personal life became scarce.

These two albums highlight Luis Rivera’s unique contributions to soul jazz, reflecting his mastery of the Hammond organ and his ability to create captivating grooves.

John Graas • Jazz Studio 3-4 Complete Sessions

Review by Ken Dryden
This Lonehill Jazz CD compiles the contents of two Decca LPs, Jazz Studio, Vol. 3 and Jazz Studio, Vol. 4. The first sessions consist of several different small groups led by French horn player John Graas, highlighted by the three tracks featuring his good friend Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax. In fact, Mulligan's influence on Graas' writing style is apparent, creating tight ensembles that nevertheless consistently swing, with the leader's well-named "Mulliganesque," a brisk cooker, being especially noteworthy. Among the other musicians are pianist Marty Paich, bassist Red Mitchell, and trumpeter Don Fagerquist. Other tracks feature tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, trumpeter Conte Candoli, alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano, and either Paich or André Previn, with Jimmy Giuffre on baritone sax. Graas' "Rogersesque," which salutes Shorty Rogers (another prominent influence upon the leader), showcases Mariano, Candoli, Paich, and guitarist Howard Roberts to good effect. The last 12 selections are from Jazz Studio, Vol. 4, with all of the compositions contributed by trumpeter and flügelhornist Jack Millman, though the personnel and arrangers vary widely from one song to the next. Like Graas' works, Millman's have stood the test of time, even if they never became a part of regularly played jazz repertoire. The music is still very fresh decades after it was recorded, with some of the cream of the crop of West Coast musicians present, including Gerry Wiggins, Curtis Counce, Chico Hamilton, Bob Gordon, Buddy Collette, Jack Montrose, and Russ Freeman, among others. Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of the date is the Latin-infused "Cathy Goes South," arranged by Johnny Mandel with Maynard Ferguson playing claves.

Review by Scott Yanow
This excellent set features a logical combination. Violinist Stephane Grappelli originally came to fame through his recordings with guitarist Django Reinhardt. Barney Kessel, although more influenced by Charlie Christian than by Django, was one of the top jazz guitarists of the 1950s and '60s and his style was quite complementary to Grappelli's. The two teamed up for several albums' worth of material in 1969. This CD reissues the former LP I Remember Django, adding four additional selections and serving as a perfect introduction to the brilliant playing of Stephane Grappelli.

Flip Phillips • Four Classic Albums

Flip Phillips albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
Here we feature four albums plus from clarinettist turned tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips, a stalwart of first the Woody Herman Herd and later as one of the mainstays of the Jazz At The Philharmonic line up with Norman Granz.
“The Flip Phillips - Buddy Rich Trio”; “Flip”; “Flip Wails” and “Swinging With Flip”
We catch Flip in many different line ups across our four selections………… As a Trio with Buddy Rich and Hank Jones on piano from 1952 (also in attendance Ray Brown on bass on half the selections). With orchestra on “Swinging With Flip” where he is joined by Charlie Shavers, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Barney Kessel and Buddy Rich………………not a bad line up!! Another classic line up with orchestra joins Flip for “Flip Wails”………..and wail he certainly does alongside Bill Harris, Billy Bauer, Harry Edison, Hank Jones, Ray Brown and Buddy Rich! Finally “Flip” where our hero is joined again by the orchestra with Howard McGhee and Benny Green.

"The Flip Phillips - Buddy Rich Trio"; "Flip"; "Flip Wails" y "Swinging With Flip"

Barney Kessel, Shelly Manne & Ray Brown • The Poll Winners

The Poll Winners trio was based on guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne, who each managed to place first on his instrument in the 1956 Down Beat, Metronome, and Playboy readers' polls, a remarkable feat given the range from hardcore jazz fans to casual generalists who read the magazines. Kessel and Brown had worked together as two-thirds of the Oscar Peterson trio, and they had all played together on numerous recording sessions, but the open sound of the guitar-led trio was a special opportunity for Brown and Manne to share the foreground. Kessel was an outstanding soloist, capable of almost trumpetlike phrases delivered with rhythmic bite and flexibility--unusual in guitarists of the era. His clear, boppish lines intertwine neatly with Brown's loping pulse and Manne's lightly swinging drums, while Brown's solos are almost as dexterous as the guitarist's. It's low-key, melodic music, equally suited for casual and close listening. --Stuart Broomer

--Stuart Broomer
