Bernard Purdie • Jazz Groove Sessions In Tokyo

Artist Biography by Ron Wynn
An all-time great soul, R&B, funk, and pop drummer, Bernard Purdie's impeccable time and mastery of backbeats and grooves are celebrated. He moved to New York from Maryland in 1960, and recorded with James Brown, King Curtis, and many others. He was CTI's house drummer in the late '60s and early '70s, and worked with Grover Washington, Jr. and George Benson among several others. Purdie toured with Curtis and Aretha Franklin in 1970, and was Franklin's music director until 1975. During his studio days in the early '70s, Purdie recorded with Louis Armstrong and Gato Barbieri along with numerous rock, pop, and soul sessions. He recorded with Dizzy Gillespie in 1980 at the Montreux Jazz Festival and toured with him in 1983. Purdie recorded with Hank Crawford during the early '80s, and has continued working steadily into the '90s. He generated a firestorm of reaction in 1993 when he charged it was his uncredited drumming rather than Ringo Starr's on some Beatles tracks. Purdie claimed proof was forthcoming, but none was presented. He made a rare date as a leader for Flying Dutchman in 1972, Pretty Purdie, that has long since disappeared. But Purdie can be heard on countless discs by Brown, Franklin, Curtis, Gillespie, and Crawford among many others.

Jack McDuff • Another Real Good'Un

Review by Steve Huey
Another Real Good 'Un is a latter-day Brother Jack McDuff session which finds the organist joined by tenor legend Houston Person, as well as (at various times) alto/tenor saxophonist Ron Bridgewater, trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, drummers Buddy Williams and Cecil Brooks III, and guitarists Randy Johnston and John Hart. It's one of McDuff's better comeback albums, as he keeps the groove pumping throughout the record, swinging soulfully and interacting nicely with the other soloists. 32 Jazz reissued the session in 1999, Savoy Jazz in 2003.

Lucky Peterson • Organ Soul Sessions

A frequent performer in France since the early 90's, Lucky Peterson is back with a triple album event: Organ Soul Sessions.

For his return to the front of the scene Lucky has chosen a mostly soul repertoire. "I just love Donny Hathaway for instance, and Stevie Wonder, for the joy they share". Lucky the organist takes up 60's and 70's classics like I Heard It Through The Grapevine and I Can't Stand The Rain, and revives the sounds of Jack McDuff, Lonnie Smith, and Jimmy Smith. He also revisits Thelonius Monk's Hammond B3 Misterioso, and adds a thoughtful version of Amy Winehouse's Rehab.

Houston Person With Ron Carter • Just Between Friends

Review:
Immediately, Houston Person's saxophone and Ron Carter's bass meld so fluidly and effortlessly -- and create such a complete picture -- that it's easy to forget that they are the only two musicians playing. Drums are not missed, nor are piano, horns, or anything else: Person and Carter's communication skills here, as on their previous outings together, are never in doubt; they're "always" in perfect sync. They take on the standards here, and though most of these ten tracks have been recorded to death by other jazz artists, the duo's approach is original and honest enough that the songs sound fresh. "Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be?)" is smooth, soft, and sexy; Irving Berlin's "Always" swings even if it never quite reaches swing tempo; and "Blueberry Hill" is playful and sweet. "Meditation," an Antonio Carlos Jobim tune, proves that bossa nova requires only the most minimal of instrumentation in order for its free-swaying tropical lilt to feel whole. The opening "How Deep Is the Ocean," another Berlin classic, sets the mood by establishing that melody and rhythm are never far apart -- neither musician is in any great hurry here and never eager to dominate or go outside of the songs' stated bounds. It's a collaboration in the truest sense, one in which emotion and the integrity of the material and arrangements trounce showboating.

Houston Person • Legends of Acid Jazz

Review by Chris Slawecki
Houston Person was among the guttiest of the gutbucket saxophonists of the soul-jazz golden age -- for proof, look no further than Legends of Acid Jazz: Houston Person, which compiles two of the saxman's most popular releases, Person to Person! and Houston Express (both originally released in 1970). Express featured the "funkmaster general" of the tenor saxophone with a tight, pocket-sized ensemble (including guitarist Grant Green and drummer Idris Muhammad), while, on Person!, his supporting ensemble expanded to include trumpet players Cecil Bridgewater and Thad Jones, guitarist Billy Butler and another kindred spirit and prince of funk on his instrument, Motown bassist Gerry Jemmott.

Legends of Acid Jazz: Houston Person provides a high-voltage cover version extravaganza, including "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People" (the Chi-Lites), "Close to You" (the Carpenters), "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yester-Day" (Stevie Wonder), "Young, Gifted and Black" (Aretha Franklin), "Just My Imagination" (the Temptations), and "Lift Every Voice and Sing," which Person describes in his liner notes as the "black national anthem." Person and friends turn every one of these, and others such as his own "Up at Joe's, Down at Jim's" and his trademark "The Houston Express" into stinging, swinging, original-sounding opuses of funk.

Leyendas del Acid Jazz: Houston Person ofrece una extravagancia de versiones de alto voltaje, incluyendo "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People" (los Chi-Lites), "Close to You" (los Carpenters), "Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yester-Day" (Stevie Wonder), "Young, Gifted and Black" (Aretha Franklin), "Just My Imagination" (los Temptations), y "Lift Every Voice and Sing", que Person describe en sus notas como el "himno nacional negro". "Person y sus amigos convierten cada una de estas canciones, y otras como la suya propia "Up at Joe's, Down at Jim's" y su característica "The Houston Express", en punzantes y originales opus de funk.

Johnny Hammond • Gears

Review by Rob Theakston
By the mid-'70s, the embracing and assimilation of soul and funk elements into the jazz vernacular had come full steam. Artists and producers from both communities were exchanging ideas and sounds that once again challenged jazz purists' definitions of what jazz "should" be. These collaborations were often scoffed at by academics and critics attempting to pigeonhole and quantify jazz into an academic exercise ripe with songbook predictability and sonic parameters. Thankfully, the record-buying public at large had the good sense to politely ignore these people and continue purchasing records with these new sounds, largely concocted by the production team of Larry and Fonce Mizell. This time around, their subject was Johnny "Hammond" Smith who proves to be more than up to the task of playing around and inside the Mizell's string arrangements which foreshadowed the early days of disco. In fact, two of the cuts found on Gears -- "Fantasy" and "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" -- were played extensively at the early Loft parties hosted by legendary DJ David Mancuso, as well as at the club many consider to be the true home of disco, the Paradise Garage in NYC. Gears starts off innocently enough with "Tell Me What To Do," which could have easily found its way on to a Donald Byrd album from this period, but then kicks into full steam with "Los Conquistadores Chocolates," a six-and-a-half-minute tour de force of funk, soul, jazz and disco all rolled into one. Hammond is in fine form throughout with crisp playing; never over improvising, but playing only what's necessary to help the music move along at a brisk pace. This is unquestionably another jewel in a treasure chest already filled with so many for the Mizell production team, and a great performance by Hammond to keep up with his contemporaries who refuse to be held back by conventional wisdom.

Houston Person • Sentimental Journey

Houston Person: Sentimental Journey
Almost 70, Houston Person is still carrying on the great tenor saxophone tradition that combines breathy soulfulness with blues-drenched, stomping swing. The lush-toned tenorist’s latest release, Sentimental Journey, verifies his continuing command of the idiom. Ben Webster-like sultriness pervades ballads such as “Fools Rush In” and “I Love You, Yes I Do,” where he sticks close to the melody, as well as “A Sunday Kind of Love,” whose tune he slightly embellishes. But on the medium to up tunes, such as “It Had to Be You,” “Canadian Sunset,” “What’ll I Do,” Illinois Jacquet’s “Black Velvet” and the title song, Person swings forcefully, imbuing his lines with a gritty earthiness.
Person’s colleagues on the date constitute an all-star lineup. Pianist Richard Wyands, guitarist Russell Malone, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Grady Tate are all experienced, top-flight performers, as they prove throughout in their sensitive accompaniment for the tenorist as well as in their own plentiful solo spots.
It’s an increasingly rare pleasure to hear a sensitive player like Houston Person pay respect to great melodies, rendering them essentially as written. But it’s also good that his new record offers plenty of opportunities for straightahead blowing by some fine improvisers.

Review by Scott Yanow
As the 21st century began, Houston Person was one of the last in a tradition of tough-toned but warm tenors able to straddle the boundaries between soul-jazz, hard bop, and soulful R&B. An expert at caressing and uplifting melodies, Person plays in the tradition of Gene Ammons. Person is in excellent form throughout this quartet/quintet date with pianist Richard Wyands, bassist Peter Washington, drummer Grady Tate, and, on four of the nine selections, guitarist Russell Malone. In fact, the combination of Person and Malone works so well that hopefully someday they will record a full album together. All of the tunes are veteran standards, with Person particularly digging into "A Sunday Kind of Love," "It Had to Be You," "Black Velvet," and "Canadian Sunset." Houston Person has recorded many fine albums for High Note and its predecessor, Muse, through the years. Sentimental Journey is a strong example of his talents.

https://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/houston-person-sentimental-journey/

Todas las melodías son estándares veteranos, con Person en particular buscando "A Sunday Kind of Love", "It Be To You You", "Black Velvet" y "Canadian Sunset".

Sonny Phillips • Sure 'Nuff

Biography by Steve Huey
Organist Sonny Phillips was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1936 to a musical family, but did not begin his jazz education until the age of 23, when he began studying with Ahmad Jamal. The music of Jimmy Smith inspired him to switch to the organ, and soon he was performing with soul-jazz greats such as Lou Donaldson, Eddie Harris, Houston Person, and Gene Ammons. Phillips debuted as a leader on the 1969 Prestige set Sure 'Nuff, which was followed by the 1970 dates Black Magic and Black on Black. He returned to recording as a leader for the Muse label in 1976 with My Black Flower, but the next year's I Concentrate on You proved to be his final recording as a leader. After an illness in 1980, Phillips moved to Los Angeles, where he occasionally taught, performed, and recorded as a sideman during the years to follow.

Houston Person • Soft Lights

Artist Biography
Houston Person wears the Boss Tenor crown, worn so long by Gene Ammons. Mr. Person is busy working his own gigs; booking his tours, finding new clubs, having phone numbers for every major concert promoter on every continent. He even produces his own albums. His first big break came while working as a sideman with organist Johnny Hammond and his group, co-led by Etta Jones. Mr. Person's working relationship with Ms. Jones began in 1973 and lasted for thirty years, until her recent passing in 2001. Early gigs happened while serving in the Army overseas in Germany, where he played with Eddie Harris, Cedar Walton and others. On Mr. Person's philosophy of jazz, he says, “Well, it's uplifting and important. And a release and a relief. That's what it is, jazz, so called jazz, to me. It's important that it's relaxing. Something that when the end of the day comes, after a hard and frustrating day out in the world, that relieves you. Relaxes you and makes you feel good.” Mr Person adds that all he wants is to give people “good solid melodies with some improvisation and plenty of blues feel.” He smiles, “You always want that dance feeling there, that happy, happy feeling.”

Vince Seneri • Urban Paradise

Vince Seneri has been pleasing audiences for over twenty years. He is one of the most talented and dynamic ‘burners’ of the Hammond B3 organ on music scene today. Endorsed by Hammond Suzuki Organ Company, USA and on the Senful Record Label, he is in demand for nightclubs, shows, theaters, festivals, and concerts throughout.

Vince Seneri provides a first class performance at all his shows. He is a charming, confident person with a friendly welcoming manner. The integrity for the music and aim to please his audience is paramount. Appreciated as both a musician and performer, Seneri has a dual persona of expert improviser and vibrant entertainer on the Hammond B3 organ. He places his keenly discerning art and virtuosity in the service of a rousing good time .

Raised in Hackettstown, NJ 50 miles west of New York City, Vince began his musical career on the accordion at the age of six. His father, Peter Settineri, was an accordionist who played professionally with his own band during that time and introduced the instrument to his son. Subsequently, his father bought a Hammond M-3 organ and introduced that instrument to his son as well. Vince studied the accordion first and later devoted himself to the Hammond organ and piano.

During his teens, it was the great Jimmy Smith who musically influenced Seneri more than any other jazz organist. He also admired and was greatly influenced by other organists like Jimmy McGriff, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Richard Groove Holmes, The Mighty Burner Charles Earland, Larry Young, Captain Jack McDuff, Ronnie Foster, Wild Bill Davis, Don Paterson. His piano influences were Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock among others. Barry Harris and Dr. James Williams were also great influences who he was fortunate to study with. Vince is also a graduate of Rutgers University located in Newark, New Jersey where he received his BA degree in marketing.

Some of the musicians that have performed and recorded with Vince include: Randy Brecker, Dave Valentin, Houston Person, David "Fathead" Newman, Paul Bollenback, Buddy Williams and many more. Vince has several CD recordings, most recently Street Talk, which received rave reviews and was considered the best B3 record for 2005.

Johnny 'Hammond' Smith • Good 'Nuff

Biography
Actually nicknamed after his instrument, Johnny "Hammond" Smith was perhaps one of the more underrated soul-jazz organists of the style's heyday. Born John Robert Smith in Louisville, KY, on December 16, 1933, Smith began learning piano as a child, idolizing Bud Powell and Art Tatum early on. After moving to Cleveland, Smith heard jazz organ pioneer Wild Bill Davis and decided to switch instruments; he made his professional debut on the organ in 1958, around the same time he was working as an accompanist for vocalist Nancy Wilson. In 1959, he began recording as a leader for Prestige, an association that would last through 1970 and produce highlights like That Good Feelin', Talk That Talk, Black Coffee, Open House, Ebb Tide, and Soul Talk, among others. As time passed, Smith's style got progressively funkier, and in 1971, he shortened his name to Johnny Hammond and moved to producer Creed Taylor's CTI label family. Hammond recorded five jazz-funk albums over the next three years, including Breakout, Wild Horses/Rock Steady, and the Mizell Brothers-helmed Gambler's Life. In 1975, Hammond moved to Milestone and recorded the culmination of his move into jazz-funk, Gears, another collaboration with the Mizell Brothers that was reviled by purists and canonized by acid jazz fans. After a few more sessions for Milestone, Smith largely retired from jazz, settling in Southern California and investing in real estate. He began recording sporadically again in the '90s, but was stricken with cancer and died on June 4, 1997. ~ Steve Huey

~ Steve Huey

Houston Person • Mellow

Review by Michael G. Nastos
Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato-driven. The quite capable pianist John Di Martino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo rings out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. In a program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet of true professionals to render themes that are harder to play slow than fast. The slower material includes the regretful, throaty ballad "Too Late Now," the totally restrained "To Each His Own," a poignant "Two Different Worlds," and the deep, mature take of "God Bless the Child." Ever cognizant of blue moods, Person is masterful in expressing his innermost heartfelt feelings, as on the easy swinger and obvious choice for this date, Duke Ellington's "In a Mellow Tone." Then there's "Blues in the A.M.," a basic jam with Ray Drummond's bass leading out with drummer Lewis Nash in an uptown style as Chirillo's guitar states its wise, sophisticated case. The most upbeat number is the closer, the fast hard bop three-minute quickie "Lester Leaps In," while in midtempo form, the opener, Bobby Hebb's "Sunny," is a typical choice. Conversely, the usual ballad "Who Can I Turn To?" is a bit amped up. Di Martino and Chirillo are known to kick things up several notches, but here are great tastemakers who fully understand Person's persona and growing importance as one who prefers an understated approach. That's not to say this marvelous tenor saxophonist has depreciated his talent as an adept technician, but at this point in his career he prefers this music on the mellow side, and has no problem staying interested in that mood, no matter the tempo.

Review by Michael G. Nastos
La canción de la canción "Who Can I Turn To?" es a bit amped up.

Sonny Phillips • I Concentrate On You

Review:
This is the second LP by organist Sonny Phillips on Muse Records from 1977. Phillips is heard playing a range of keyboard instruments, predominately the organ but at times and in particular on the album's title track he lays down some masterful piano work. He is joined by quite a stellar array players including Virgil Jones on trumpet, Eddie McFadden on guitar, Lawrence Killian on congas and percussion, Charlie Persip on drums, Mervin Bronson on bass and John Stubblefield on tenor saxophone. The tunes chosen for the album range from a number jazz standards and some more contemporary compositions; included are two of Phillips' own compositions. Phillips although considered a junior amongst his fellow organists clearly displays his own manner and style of playing, which in many ways cannot be aligned to any major influence. His ability to write and play piano sets him outside the core of the modern jazz organists that maintained popularity throughout the 60's and 70's. Overall the music comes across as very melodic and all players harmonize and interact seamlessly. This is enhanced by Houston Person as producer and the resulting tracks are captured by the masterful skills of Rudy Van Gelder as the engineer. Recommended.

Recomendado.

Houston Person • Trust in Me

Review by Jim Todd
Houston Person is generally considered a soul-jazz specialist whose tenor playing can be counted on to elevate a standard organ combo or groove-based session into something memorable. This set, however, demonstrates Person's reach well beyond funk and blues grooves. The CD, combining the 1967 dates Chocomotive and Trust in Me, reveals a multi-faceted player who has grasped the lessons of tenor greats from Coleman Hawkins to Gene Ammons to Sonny Rollins. This explains why when Person sits down with a Johnny Hammond, Eddie Harris, or Charles Earland he has a whole lot more in his bag than blues licks and an assertive tone. Pianist Cedar Walton is a major presence on both sets, providing a powerful, personal approach that falls somewhere between Horace Silver's sublime earthiness and Thelonious Monk's knotty logic. Veteran hard boppers Bob Cranshaw and Paul Chambers share the bass spot. The drummers are lesser-knowns Lenny McBrowne and Frankie Jones. Drummer's drummer Alan Dawson is on the Chocomotive tracks in a rare but effective turn at the vibes. Space limitations mean that "Girl Talk" and "Up, Up and Away" from the original Chocomotive are not on the compilation. On the other hand, the bonus track, a brief outing on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin," serves as a prime example of Person's abilities in a probing, straight-ahead setting. A couple of tracks veer towards a blowsy lounge style, but even on "More" (a song that has not stood the test of time) Person -- with effective work from Walton, Dawson, and Cranshaw -- steers the performance to a swinging place that transcends the tune's inherent cheesiness.
