Esbjörn Svensson Trio • Seven Days of Falling

Review by Stewart Mason
Available for quite some time as an import before the tiny Philadelphia-based indie 215 Records finally released it stateside, complete with a bonus live DVD, 2003's Seven Days of Falling is every bit the equal of E.S.T.'s earlier records. Misguided American media comparisons to the highly overrated the Bad Plus have done pianist Esbjörn Svensson, bassist Dan Berglund, and drummer Magnus Ostrom a grave disservice, as their music is far more wide-ranging and much less gimmicky. Despite occasional forays into rock influences like "O.D.R.I.P." and a few brief passages that skirt the edges of outside free improv, there's an elegance and shapeliness to the trio's work that has more in common with the cerebral cool of Bill Evans (particularly on the quietly gorgeous opener "Ballad for the Unborn") or the effortless melodic grace of the Vince Guaraldi Trio ("Evening in Atlantis," "Believe, Beleft, Below"). Seven Days of Falling is a ravishingly beautiful, musically captivating album. Bonus track alert: hidden after the nervy "O.D.R.I.P." is the Sinatra-like ballad "Love Is Real," featuring guest vocals from Josh Haden, son of Charlie and brother of Petra.

Esbjörn Svensson (1964 – 2008) Swedish Musician, Composer and Founder of e.s.t Esbjörn Svensson Trio.

Esbjörn Svensson is one of the most well known and successful Swedish musicians of all time. His music and the way he played the piano can be described as energetic, experimental and innovative. It has its roots in jazz music but with influences from both classical music and pop/rock.

Esbjörn was born in Skultuna 1964. His mother played classical music on the piano and his father listened to all the great jazz musicians on the radio and gramophone and Esbjörn himself listened to Radio Luxembourg to hear the latest pop and rock.

After playing in different constellations of swedish jazz groups Esbjörn wanted to explore his own music and started e.s.t Esbjörn Svensson Trio together with his childhood friend Magnus Öström, drums and Dan Berglund, base.

1993 e.s.t released their first album “When Everyone has Gone”, but it was with the album “From Gagarin’s Point of View ” in 1999 that they made their international breakthrough.

Touring almost 100 days a year created a great audience both in Europe and the rest of the world. To play live, meet the audience, and create music moments was the impulsion to be on tour and with their non boundary music they found their way to many non-jazz listeners around the world.

e.s.t recorded eleven studio albums and three live albums before Esbjörn died in an accident in June 2008. At this time e.s.t was one of Europe’s most successful Jazz trios with a career spanning over 15 years and the first ever European band to be featured on the front cover of US jazz bible Downbeat.

Esbjörn Svensson Trio • 2001 - E.S.T. Live 2000

They have been lauded as the "New sound in the Old World", and as "high voltage out of Sweden"; the group has been called "possibly the best jazz trio in the world". The Esbjörn Svensson Trio's - known as EST - rise to the heights has been almost frightening.

Stars sometimes shine much longer than one would think. And here are recordings that demonstrate this is true for EST. The band, which was first formed in 1993, quickly found their very special sound. However, at first, no one outside EST's homeland was aware of them. Six years ago, in 1995, when Esbjörn Svensson still had long hair, and wore a headband, a record titled "Mr. And Mrs. Handkerchief", which consisted of live air shots from various towns in Sweden, was releasedThose who have heard how the trio played back then can attest that it was breathtaking music.

Much of what characterizes EST's play today was already well-defined in 1995: the unity and riveting strength of the inter-play, the compelling themes, themes that immediately jump out at the listener, and yet are never burdened with cliches.

///////

Esbjorn Svensson Trio • Plays Monk

Originally recorded in 1996, the Esbjorn Svensson Trio's tribute to Thelonious Monk further establishes them as the hottest jazz act on the planet right now, as their recent UK dates have shown."Deeply lyrical, profoundly modern and beautifully balancing the tradition/innovation quotient, they have the sort of interplay that only comes from years using the same line-up (the thoughtful, unpredictable Svensson on piano plus Dan Berglund on bassand drummer Magnus Ostrom) and are currently among the most impressive of small groups in jazz…every cut is a feast of invention and beauty."

Esbjorn Svensson • HOME.S

We've had a few from-the-vaults recordings worth celebrating since Esbjorn Svensson's sudden passing in mid-2008, but this long- belated discovery is a quiet surprise the music world could not have expected. There was the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.)'s final completed album Leukocyte (ACT Music) that same year, later followed by the equally exploratory 301 (ACT, 2012) which was compiled from the same sessions. A couple of posthumous live releases have further demonstrated how the trio's stylistic hodgepodge would appeal to rock-and techno-loving listeners as much as those across the jazz world. Naturally they have all been focused on e.s.t., which was the pianist's main (almost only) outlet through his entire career.

HOME.S. is inevitably unique by contrast: it comprises a set of sketches recorded in Svensson's basement only a couple weeks before his fatal accident, probably intended for more extensive flights of fancy in the trio's hands. If these aren't the pieces he would have eventually shared with the world, they are certainly not dashed-off demos either. There's an inspired germ of an idea behind each one—the contemplative sonata-like eloquence of "Zeta," the flighty "Epsilon" drifting into a pretty daydream, or the dramatic "Delta" with one of Svensson's characteristic twisty low-end lines rumbling like the stomp of an angry giant.

While a couple tracks barely have time to establish themselves before drifting off again, the tease is still less frustrating than tantalizing (the closing "Iota" somehow builds more classical drama than should be possible in only two minutes). Others take their time to smoothly unfold, such as the sunny mutating vamp of "Eta" which channels more than a little Keith Jarrett, or "Gamma" meandering from doubtful to warmly reassuring with a tinge of gospel. Trademark touches of Svensson's unclassifiable style are everywhere, always making an eclectic blend that could not have come from anyone else. It's a simple joy to hear his mind and fingers at play, exploring just for its own sake; even if this work-in- progress couldn't become another fully-developed landmark in the end, HOME.S. is nonetheless a beautiful set and a welcome gift.

A very good album, bordering on excellence at times. Such is the latest album by Esbjörn Svensson Trio. After this ‘Leucocyte’ there will, unfortunately, be no more original works by this E.S.T.. Perhaps old recordings will be revived to satisfy the fans who have been orphaned by this band, but this is the last album by the Swedish trio, perhaps the best European jazz trio in recent years. The reason is well known: the death of pianist Esbjörn Svensson at the age of 44 while scuba diving.
Incredibly, this album is the product of a jam session held by the band over two days in Sydney, while they were on their Australian tour. It is true that the band used to work in this way a lot in order to subsequently shape the themes of their albums, but what happens here is not normal, because if you don't know this fact, it seems that everything is composed and written. That is to say, the degree of complicity and mutual knowledge that the three members of the band had reached was such that it bordered on the telepathic. The music flows. Just like that. The addition of electronic effects and soundscapes in the post-production process serves to give unity and continuity to what is heard.
The trio's twelfth album - which has become, to their regret, their posthumous legacy - shows the band at the peak of their powers, open to new perspectives, able to explore new paths and not rest on their laurels. There are moments of apotheosis, such as the first part of ‘Premonition’ entitled ‘Earth’, where they show one of the paths of the jazz of the future. No less excellent is ‘Jazz’, the fourth track on the album, which can be understood as a declaration of how they understand jazz to be a place where jazz and pop-rock come together not to make a fusion but to create a new sonic concept; and with ‘Ab initio’, the first of the four parts into which the composition that gives the album its title is divided, they are left over.

Esbjörn Svensson Trio • E.S.T. Live In Hamburg

Review by Christian Genzel
In a word: wow. Since their 1993 debut album, the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, or E.S.T., as it is usually called, have taken the jazz world by storm, winning numerous awards, playing sold-out world tours, topping the charts, and generally enjoying a popularity that's exceeded that of almost any other jazz group in years. The trio was also the first European jazz group to grace the cover of Down Beat magazine, which led to long discussions about the heritage of jazz and the validity of European jazz; and, naturally, it caused some listeners to perceive an artificial hype and discredit the band for simply not being as brilliant as everyone says they are. Well, do yourself a favor and do not listen to the detractors -- listen to E.S.T.'s music instead, and this two-hour concert recorded on November 22, 2006 in Hamburg, Germany, is an excellent place to start, since it shows the superb musicianship of pianist Esbjörn Svensson, bassist Dan Berglund, and drummer Magnus Öström minus any studio trickery; it shows their exquisite communication with each other, their daring improvisations, their effortless flow -- and most of all, it shows their unique brand of music, where a jazz trio can easily incorporate heavy metal distortion during a song ("Definition of a Dog"), then play a sparse, lovely ballad ("The Goldhearter Miner"), and where funk, classical, and avant-garde music elements are incorporated into a sound that never feels academic or difficult to listen to. The band plays everything with the energy of a rock group (Jim Rakete's liner photography even makes them look like one), and the music is often edgy, but the hypnotic repetitions and the building intensity of many tracks often have an almost trance-like quality. The question whether E.S.T. play jazz or pop or rock is completely beside the point: yes, this is jazz, as jazz has always evolved and incorporated new ideas (and almost all of the important developments in jazz have been derided by critics as not being "true jazz" in their time). Yes, this is pop, as it's accessible and, well, popular. And yes, this is rock, with its energy and recklessness. But essentially, it's just unique and exciting music.

BBC Review
One of e.s.t.’s greatest albums, and even arguably their ultimate work.
Martin Longley 2012

Following the posthumous release of Leucocyte in 2008, only months after the untimely death of pianist Esbjörn Svensson, it seemed as though that album would represent e.s.t.’s final studio statement. Now, nearly four years later, 301 has emerged. It was recorded during the same sessions, whilst the Swedish trio were touring around Asia and Australia. The disc is named after the 301 Studios in Sydney.

This is no sweeping-up of studio off-cuts. This is one of e.s.t.’s greatest albums, and even arguably their ultimate work, in every sense of the word. It represents a colossal achievement, as they take their final bow. The 2007 material might be extremely varied in tone and approach, partly out of necessity, doubtless governed by the available recordings, but this circumstance works to the album’s advantage. It’s a summation of where the trio had been, and also of where these perpetually evolving players were heading next.

Before his death, Svensson was actually involved in the editing down of the sessions into what might have been a double album. In the end, surviving members Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund elected to delay the release of 301. Regular sound engineer Åke Linton was also a key presence in the recording, editing and mixing process.

A sombre, portentous opener, Behind the Stars, has lone piano, merging into the extended Inner City, City Lights, one of the album’s two staggering epics. Delicately haunting bass enters almost unnoticed, Berglund bowing sparse traces as Öström’s drum brushes follow. It’s a stalking, brooding slow-builder, hovering at length, as Svensson’s piano becomes increasingly flecked with distortion effects, a sinuous bassline unthreading. The drums slink, and a massed choir-like effect develops, adding to the sustained tone of urgency.

The Left Lane operates with a more conventional jazz pianism, all the more striking when it follows on from its scuzzed predecessor. Svensson’s spirited, bluesy virtuosity is buoyed by springily tensed bass and drums. Suddenly, the threesome is venturing into the industrial loading bay, as Houston, the 5th heads towards electro-acoustic abstraction, bathed with sonic distress.

Once more, there’s a cut to pure piano grace with Part I of Three Falling Free. The lengthy Part II is the album’s other sheer classic ripper, amassing a percussive density that approaches an Afro-Latin feel, the bass distortion growing, a driving rhythm set up for Svensson’s epic gestures, propelling towards a gargantuan climax. Not surprisingly, this is followed by the tender ballad of The Childhood Dream, as all facets of e.s.t. are continually revealed.

Esbjörn Svensson Trio • Retrospective - The very best of e.s.t

Review by Thom Jurek
Despite the fact that 2008’ Leucocyte, would be the Esbjörn Svensson Trio's final album due to the tragic scuba diving accident that killed Svensson, this was a band that had traversed such wide musical territory they deserved a retrospective treatment simply to sum up what had transpired between the release of 1993’s When Everyone Has Gone and that premature finale. While this 70-minute single disc doesn’t contain any unreleased material, or pre-1999 material (in favor of presenting the trio’s fully developed aesthetic), it is beautifully compiled. Svensson as both composer and pianist was influenced by everyone from Thelonious Monk and Keith Jarrett to Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, as well as loads of rock and pop musicians. Bassist Dan Berglund, besides being classically trained, also loved hard rock as well as jazz, and was attracted to its most physical and aesthetically refined players, from Charles Mingus to Barre Phillips, while drummer/percussionist Magnus Öström loved drummers as diverse as Billy Higgins, Elvin Jones, and contemporary Manu Katche. These 13 tracks point to a unifying point of view of strengths and influences -- as well as nuances and the love of physical space -- that made E.S.T. not only one of the most accessible jazz piano trios of all time, but also one of its most adventurous; they were at the forefront of reinventing its role in modern jazz. While everything in this set is top-notch, particular highlights include “Believe,” “Beleft,” Below,” the short excerpt from Leucocyte’s nearly half-hour title track, “Dodge the Dodo,” “From Gagarin’s Point of View,” “Goldwrap,” and "Dolores in a Shoe.S.T.and." Highly recommended for the curious; a killer mixtape for the fan.
