Scone Cash Players, the Miami-based group led by longtime Daptone Hammond legend Adam Scone, are expanding the limits of what people think and expect when they hear organ music. With his organ acting as lead singer, Scone and his cosmic choir serve up a funky,  genre-bending experience that will take you on a trip to the outer limits of the soul-jazz universe.

Between tours of South America, Europe and all across the United States, the group has released three full-length albums. Their 2018 debut, Blast Furnace (reissued by Colemine Records in 2022) followed by the well-received As the Screw Turns and The Mind Blower. Their new album, the brazilian-influenced Brooklyn to Brooklin (Daptone Records) was recorded and produced at Penrose Studios in Riverside, CA by Daptone cofounder Gabriel Roth (a.k.a. Bosco Mann).  

Named after the NYC borough and corresponding São Paulo locale, this album is Scone Cash Players’ most meticulously made recording to date. It reflects Scone’s recent trips to Brazil, first with soul legend Lee Fields, where he imbibed the soulful, vital sounds of artists like Jorge Ben, Tim Maia and the psychedelic flourishes of Os Mutantes. Blend that with expressive horn arrangements, raw, bluesy guitar and that screaming B3 sound following in the tradition of legends like Dr. Lonnie Smith, Brother Jack McDuff, and Jimmy Smith to name a few…and you’ve got hard-driving psychedelic soul that only the Scone Cash Players can deliver.

When he’s not making solo albums as Adam Scone (most recently the simmering Low & Slow) he’s at it with Scone Cash Players, spinning sounds that are modern but rooted in that purist Hammond sound: drawbars, Leslie cabinet, bass lines, trills and tremolos and accents and flourishes in the authentic soul-jazz vernacular. To round out the vocal arrangements, Scone enlists multiple singers for an aesthetic reminiscent of Freddie Roach’s All That’s Good, Donald Byrd’s A New Perspective and Dizzy Gillespie’s Souled Out – among other obscure gems.

An Ohio native, Scone lives and breathes the organ tradition. Getting his start playing in and around the Cleveland and Youngstown music scenes, the use of “Players” in the band’s moniker is a tip-of-the-cap to local legends The Ohio Players. In addition to appearing on over 50 recordings, Scone has also accompanied jazz/boogaloo legend Lou Donaldson at the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note on the organ bench once occupied by Dr. Lonnie Smith. He’s also performed with the likes of Jimmy Cobb, Melvin Sparks, George Braith and Ben Dixon, to name a few. He has stories to spare from his years touring with blues-rockers JJ Grey & Mofro, not to mention soul legends The Sugarman 3, Naomi Shelton and Sharon Jones. After years of heavy sideman work in New York, he relocated to Miami in 2015 and began to focus more exclusively on Scone Cash Players, in an audacious bid to take the world of funk and groove by storm.

This exposed him to an international audience at the world’s top music festivals.These included Glastonbury in the UK, Montreaux Festival in Switzerland, Nice Jazz Festival in France, Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, and the North Sea Festival in the Netherlands to name a few.

Scone also played in Jazz and Boogaloo Legend Lou Donaldson’s band for weeks at the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note in New York City. Scone has also shared the stage or recorded with legends with Jimmy Cobb, George Braith, Ben Dixon, Lee Fields, Fred Thomas, & Naomi Shelton. In 2016 Scone appeared with soul legend Charles Bradley. In 2013 he saw success as a sideman with Ian Hendrickson-Smith’s album “The Soul of my Alto” reaching #1 on the Jazz radio charts.

Scone was selected a 4 time Jazz Ambassador by Lincoln Center & Kennedy Center for the Arts. These tours took him to over 35 different countries to play organ in Africa, South America and the Middle and Near East. After he completed these tours he directed his attention to the Hammond Organ sound in Rock and Roll, spending five years of relentless touring with southern rock masters JJ Grey & Mofro. With them, Scone played the US’s top festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and Bumbershoot. Scone’s organ playing has appeared on over 50 albums as a sideman.

"Low and Slow" is all about mood. It is about the rare time of the day when you may find a moment of solace in between the chaos of everyday life. Adam Scone's Hammond organ sound is slow. Ian Hendrickson-Smith's Baritone Sax sound is low. Tsutomu Nakai brings his unique tone on guitar. All are set up by the beautiful playing of Tom Beckham on Vibes and Aaron Thurston on Drums. The Sugarman 3, sometimes titled The Sugarman Three, is a retro-funk band from New York formed in 1996 by saxophonist Neal Sugarman, Hammond organ player Adam Scone, and drummer Rudy Albin. The band has released four studio albums—Sugar's Boogaloo (1999), Soul Donkey (2000), Pure Cane Sugar (2002) and What the World Needs Now (2012)—and one compilation album, Sweet Spot (2001).

Picking up where their 7" singles left off, Sugarman Three provides 11 memorable, booty-shaking moments on this 2002 release. Although Sugarman Three has received many Jon Spencer comparisons from indie rock circles, Pure Cane Sugar is a slick and soulful slab of raw R&B that carries little of the screaming and noise of Spencer's outfit. Instead, they harness the sharp timing of funk and produce intensely groovy instrumentals with the occasional guest vocalist making an appearance. The best use of a singer is "Take It As It Comes," a James Brown-style number that uses a tight horn part to drive the song along while Sugarman Three jams away in all their funky glory. Other highlights include the mid-tempo groove of "Pure Cane," the Motown-esque "Modern Jive," and the saxophone extravaganza "Country Girl." The key to Sugarman Three's magic is the tension they manage to pull out of these songs, making each glorious breakdown seem like a genuine release. Soulful, swaggering, and fun, Pure Cane Sugar is a fantastic modern funk release that journeys into the complicated rhythms and basslines of the genre's heyday and comes back ready to dance.

Retomando donde quedaron sus singles de 7 ", Sugarman Three ofrece 11 momentos memorables y temblorosos en este lanzamiento de 2002. The Sugarman Three • Soul Donkey

Review

The Sugarman Three's second album for Desco Records, Soul Donkey isn't markedly different from its predecessor, delivering catchy, infectious, funky soul-jazz instrumentals driven by leader Neal Sugarman's alto sax and Adam Scone's Hammond organ. The group positively revels in their late-'60s sound, and their sincere appreciation for the somewhat maligned groove style communicates itself very effectively.

Originally released in 1999, on the Desco label, this is Sugarman 3 second soulful offering. This album illustrates the beginning of the groups movment towards a more traditional funk sound. Stripped down arrangements and a departure from solos, finds the Sugarman 3 focusing more on the strength of Scone's percolating basslines and organ grooves.

El segundo álbum de The Sugarman Three para Desco Records, Soul Donkey, no es muy diferente de su predecesor, ya que ofrece instrumentos de soul-jazz pegadizos, contagiosos y funky impulsados por el saxo alto del líder Neal Sugarman y el órgano Hammond de Adam Scone. El grupo se deleita positivamente con su sonido de finales de los 60, y su sincero aprecio por el estilo groove algo difamado se comunica de forma muy efectiva.

Lanzado originalmente en 1999, en el sello Desco, este es el segundo ofrecimiento conmovedor de Sugarman 3. Este álbum ilustra el comienzo del movimiento del grupo hacia un sonido funk más tradicional. Despojado de los arreglos y alejado de los solos, Sugarman 3 se centra más en la fuerza de las líneas de bajo y el organo groove de Scone.
