Jimmy Heath • The Quota
Review by Stephen Cook
Jimmy Heath's considerable talents are very evident on this fine hard bop title. His supple, Dexter Gordon-inspired tenor work shines throughout the album's seven tracks, which range from the challenging yet fleet originals "Funny Time" and "The Quota" to attractive covers like "When Sunny Gets Blue" and Milt Jackson's "Bells and Horns." Heath also mixes it up stylistically with elements of both East Coast jazz (Philly native, vigorous ensemble work) and West Coast jazz (spry, vaporous arrangements), showing his flexibility amidst the music's healthy, bi-coastal rivalry of the late-'50s and early-'60s California stars Art Pepper and Chet Baker would cover several Heath numbers on their excellent 1956 collaboration Playboys. The Quota also benefits from stellar solo contributions by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, French horn player Julius Watkins, and pianist Cedar Walton; brothers Percy and Albert Heath handle the bass and drums chores admirably, and they make a family reunion of it. The Quota's strong material, tight arrangements, and thoughtful solos help make this Heath title one of the better hard bop releases available and a must for any jazz collection. https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-quota-mw0000177220

Review
by Alex Henderson
Les Spann was a perfect example of a jazz artist who had an impressive list of sideman credentials but never got very far as a leader. Although he played with heavyweights like Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges, and Ben Webster, the guitarist/flutist didn't record on his own extensively -- which is regrettable because Spann was an intriguing musician. How many guitarists are equally proficient when it comes to playing the flute? Spann's two instruments get equal time on Gemini, an excellent hard bop date that was produced by the ubiquitous Orrin Keepnews. This album, which Fantasy reissued on CD on its Original Jazz Classics imprint in 2001, was recorded at two different sessions in December 1960. One finds Spann on flute, while the other finds him on guitar. Both sessions employ Julius Watkins on French horn, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Sam Jones on upright bass, but there are two different drummers -- Al "Tootie" Heath at one session, Louis Hayes at the other. Spann gives 100 percent at both sessions. As a guitarist, he is bluesy and expressive on material that ranges from Quincy Jones' "Stockholm Sweetnin'" and Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma" to the standard "There Is No Greater Love." But he is equally impressive when he picks up the flute on tracks that include the melancholy "Afterthought" and a lyrical performance of the standard "It Might as Well Be Spring." One thing Spann doesn't do on this album is play both flute and guitar on the same tune; he is careful to keep them separate. And while it would have been interesting to hear him play a flute solo right after a guitar solo, Gemini is still excellent. It's too bad that Spann didn't do a lot more recording as a leader.

There Is No Greater Love". It Might as Well Be Spring".

Les Modes • Mood In Scarlet
Les Jazz Modes Biography by David Szatmary
This underrated swinging bop group was earmarked by the distinctive sound of Julius Watkins on French horn. The band also included Monk sax player Charlie Rouse, pianist Gildo Mahones, bassist Ron Jefferson, and sometimes percussionist Chano Pozo. Five albums were recorded by Les Jazz Modes in the mid- to late '50s, and some of the group's music has subsequently been reissued/compiled by Koch and Collectables.

Don Byrd - Gigi Gryce • Modern Jazz Perspective
Review:
by Matt Collar
Trumpeter Donald Byrd's 1957 date Modern Jazz Perspective is a swinging, straight-ahead, bop-infused album featuring pianist Gigi Gryce. Also showcased on the album is vocalist Jackie Paris. Interestingly, Paris is also featured playing banjo on the gospel-inflected opening track, "Medley: Early Morning Blues."

Thad Jones-Mel Lewis • New Life [Dedicated To Max Gordon]
Review
by Scott Yanow
This
LP has extensive packaging (thanks to producer John Snyder) and decent
but not overly memorable music. The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra's
best recordings were for Solid State and Blue Note, although they still
boasted an impressive all-star personnel during the mid-1970s. The seven
selections (five arranged and composed by Jones and one apiece by Jerry
Dodgion and Cecil Bridgewater) do not include any future standards.
There are fine solos from the likes of flugelhornist Jones, Greg Herbert
and Frank Foster on tenor, Roland Hanna and Walter Norris on piano,
trumpeters Cecil Bridgewater and Waymon Reed, baritonist Pepper Adams,
and others, so the music is not without its interesting moments. But in
general, the solos and arrangements are more memorable than the
melodies. This LP has not yet been reissued on CD.

Julius Watkins Sextet • New Faces – New Sounds
by Scott Yanow
Julius Watkins was virtually the father of the jazz French horn. He started playing French horn at the age of nine, although he worked with the Ernie Fields orchestra on trumpet (1943-1946). In the late '40s, he took some French horn solos on records by Kenny Clarke and Babs Gonzales, and spent 1949 as a member of the Milt Buckner big band. After three years of study at the Manhattan School of Music, Watkins started appearing on small-group dates including a pair of notable sessions led by Thelonious Monk in 1953-1954. He co-led les Jazz Modes with Charlie Rouse in 1956-1959; toured with Quincy Jones' big band (1959-1961); did plenty of studio work (including the Miles Davis-Gil Evans collaborations); and recorded with Charles Mingus (in 1965 and 1971), Freddie Hubbard, John Coltrane (the Africa sessions), and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, among many others.

Chico O'Farrill • Nine Flags
Review
by Scott Yanow
One of arranger Chico O'Farrill's few jazz recordings of the 1954-94 period, this LP pays tribute to nine different countries, which were represented at the time by Nine Flags fragrances. The ten pieces (which include "The Lady from Nine Flags") have originals influenced by the music of Brazil, England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Sweden. The overall music is quite different from O'Farrill's usual Afro-Cuban jazz outings. He features three different groups ranging from a septet to a 15-piece orchestra, assigning solo space to such fine players as trombonist J.J. Johnson, flugelhornists Art Farmer and Clark Terry and guitarist Larry Coryell (one of his earliest recordings). None of the individual songs caught on, and the interpretations are usually quite concise, but this LP (which has not yet been reissued) is generally quite fun.

Biography
by Richard S. Ginell
Chico O'Farrill was right in the thick of the Afro-Cuban and Latin waves that hit jazz in the late '40s and '50s. His sophisticated writing for Latin big bands of the early '50s was often bold, brassy, and tense, yet he could also achieve a delicate, almost classical ambience in such pieces as "Angels' Flight" and work capably in larger forms (the groundbreaking "Afro-Cuban Jazz Suites").
O'Farrill took up the trumpet while in military school in Georgia, returning to Cuba as a full-fledged jazz fan after hearing the top American big bands. He studied composition in his native Havana and led his own band there before moving to New York City in 1948, where he soon made a name for himself writing music for Benny Goodman ("Undercurrent Blues"), Stan Kenton ("Cuban Episode"), and Machito ("Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite"). From 1950 to 1954, O'Farrill made six fiery 10" albums of Latin and American big band jazz for Clef and Norgran, all of which have been reissued on a Verve two-CD set, Cuban Blues. He also appeared with his own band at Birdland and toured the U.S. Toward the end of the decade, he moved to Mexico City, returning to New York in 1965 to work as arranger and music director of the TV series Festival of the Lively Arts and to write arrangements for Count Basie. O'Farrill also put his classical training to use by writing pieces for symphony orchestra such as "Three Cuban Dances" and "Symphony No. 1." Though he continued to write pieces for Machito, Kenton, Gato Barbieri, and Dizzy Gillespie into the '70s, there were no recording sessions under O'Farrill's name from 1966 until 1995, when he came roaring back on the scene, his imagination and vigor miraculously intact, with the outstanding Pure Emotion CD (Milestone). He recorded two more strong albums for Milestone, the last being Carambola, released in October 2000. Eight months later, on June 27, 2001, Arturo "Chico" O'Farrill died while hospitalized in New York.

Jimmy Heath • Triple Threat
Review
by Scott Yanow
Jimmy Heath has long been at least a triple threat as a musician (tenor, flute and soprano), arranger and composer. On this 1998 CD reissue, Heath sticks to tenor, performing "Make Someone Happy" and "The More I See You' while joined by pianist Cedar Walton and his two brothers, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. The other five numbers consist of four of his originals (best-known is "Gemini") plus a reworking of the ballad "Goodbye." For these selections, the quartet is augmented by young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (who takes a few fiery solos) and Julius Watkins on French horn. The arrangements of Heath uplift the straightahead music and make each selection seem a bit special.

Donald Byrd-Gigi Gryce • Jazz Lab
Alto saxophonist/arranger Gigi Gryce and trumpeter Donald Byrd's innovative, but unfortunately short-lived Jazz Lab Quintet recorded several sides during 1957, seven of which were released on this excellent Columbia album (a handful of other titles were collectively made for Riverside, Verve, and RCA). The nucleus band of Gryce, Byrd, pianist Tommy Flanagan (a spot also filled by Wade Legge and Hank Jones), bassist Wendell Marshall, and drummer Art Taylor are augmented on four cuts here by trombonists Benny Powell and Jimmy Cleveland, French horn player Julius Watkins, baritone saxophonist Sahib Shihab, and tuba player Don Butterfield. The expanded ensemble turn in fleetly swinging renditions of Horace Silver's "Speculation" and Gryce's "Nica's Tempo," while varying the mood a bit with a ballad reading of Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford" and a Far East-tinged waltz take on Randy Weston's "Little Niles" (shades of Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool group are heard in the complex, yet featherweight arrangements by Gryce). The quintet tracks include Gryce's "Sans Souci" and a provocative version of "Over the Rainbow." With some of the best arrangements heard in jazz and excellent solos by Gryce, Byrd, and Flanagan, Jazz Lab makes for an excellent introduction to the hard bop catalog.
