Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown • Gate Swings
Review by AllMusic
The aptly titled GATE SWINGS finds the Texas roots music legend harking back to the big band blues/jazz hybrids popular in the late 1940s. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's own work from the '40s and '50s (see the Rounder reissue THE ORIGINAL PEACOCK RECORDINGS) was heavily influenced by these styles. His deft, inventive guitar work, bluesy vocals, and astonishing ability to harness the goosebump-inducing power of an R&B big band are as evident on this 1997 release as they were some 50 years earlier.
The opener, "Midnight Hour," is a remake of his 1954 original, and gets things cooking with a loping groove powered by the gargantuan sound of his 17-piece ensemble. Songs that have long been part of Brown's live repertoire, including classics like "Take The A Train" and Percy Mayfield's "River's Invitation," are mixed in among brilliant Brown originals like "Bits and Pieces" and the funky "Gate's Blues Waltz," featuring fine tenor and alto sax solos from Tony Dagradi and Eric Demmer, respectively. Even after over half a century in the business, the Gate is still churning out lively, musically astonishing efforts that swing harder than anything around.

Lightnin' Hopkins • Lightnin' Hopkins
Originally released as The Roots of Lightnin' Hopkins, Smithsonian/Folkways' Lightnin' Hopkins was recorded in 1959. Upon its initial release, it was a pivotal part of the blues revival and helped re-spark interest in Hopkins. Before it was recorded, the bluesman had disappeared from sight; after a great deal of searching, Sam Charters found Hopkins in a rented one-room apartment in Houston. Persuading Lightnin' with a bottle of gin, Charters convinced Hopkins to record ten songs in that room, using only one microphone. The resulting record was one of the greatest albums in Hopkins' catalog, a skeletal record that is absolutely naked in its loneliness and haunting in its despair. These unvarnished performances arguably capture the essence of Lightnin' Hopkins better than any of his other recordings, and it is certainly one of the landmarks of the late-'50s/early-'60s blues revival.
Jimmy Witherspoon • The Blues The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues

Jeffrey P. Ross • My Pleasure
Editorial Reviews
Jeff Ross, a veteran of many bands in many styles, recorded a blues album, not a combo platter. Sure, there are tracks that offer varying shades, but if you bought this album, a) you?re probably wanting to hear some blues, and b) you?re into (and might even play) guitar. And so, a blues guitar album you shall get.

Sonny Rhodes • A Good Day To Play The Blues
Sonny Rhodes is a performer who believes in giving his all with every show, and when you see this turbaned performer in one of his bright suits you won't be disappointed. Although a strong effort, this disc suffers from some inconsistent material for him to let loose and really play the blues. He was born and raised in Texas, and you can hear that in his vibrant playing; however, he lived for years in the Bay Area and thus was exposed to and influenced by a wide variety of influences. His lap steel playing is sharp, gritty, and at times stinging to the bone. His vocals display his strong Texas upbringing; he played behind Albert Collins and Freddie King when he was younger, and these roots are exposed at their most basic in his phrasing. The material here (he wrote or co-wrote eight of the 13 cuts) is not weak -- it is just not as strong and animated throughout as the session during which he recorded Blue Diamond, which was as sharp, cutting, and balanced a performance as watching a fine cutting horse work his magic on the poor hapless cow. The music here is good, but he set a benchmark for himself, and he doesn't quite reach up to it on this one (though for anyone else it would be considered a great effort). This is a showman you truly have to see live to appreciate. The consummate showman can play the blues.
