Cat Anderson • Plays W.C. Handy

Cat Anderson only led a scattering of sessions throughout his career, and this particular set (reissued on CD in 1997) was only his second date as a leader since 1965. For a tribute to the music of W.C. Handy, Anderson performs nine Handy classics (including "Careless Love," "Beale Street Blues," "St. Louis Blues," and "Memphis Blues"), plus three alternate takes that were released for the first time in this reissue. Anderson, arguably the greatest of all high-note trumpeters, mostly plays in the middle-register during this set, but he cuts loose in the stratosphere now and then to remind listeners who he is, most notably on the opening "Yellow Dog Blues." On a swing date that sometimes hints at Dixieland, Anderson takes solo honors while being assisted by ex-Ellingtonians altoist Norris Turney, tenor saxophonist Harold Ashby, trombonist Booty Wood, bassist Aaron Bell, and drummer Sam Woodyard. Philippe Baudoin or Andre Persiany is on piano. A near classic.

Tenor-saxophonist Harold Ashby has had relatively few opportunities to record as a leader, making this date for the Norwegian Gemini label a notable effort. Ashby, who is heavily influenced by Ben Webster, gets to stretch out while accompanied by the Norman Simmons Trio (with Simmons on piano, bassist Paul West and drummer Gerryck King). The repertoire includes four mostly basic Ashby originals plus a quartet of swing standards; "I Got It Bad" and "Whispering" are highlights. A strong effort by the very underrated veteran tenor.

This attractive double LP from 1979 includes two complete sessions by altoist Johnny Hodges that were previously unissued at the time. Most unusual is that Hodges contributed 15 of the 19 compositions; the others are "My Melancholy Baby," "Lotus Blossom," and two by clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton. Despite the unfamiliar material, the music is very much in the Duke Ellington style, with an emphasis on blues, ballads, and riff tunes. In addition to Hodges, the other main soloists are trumpeter Harold "Shorty" Baker, tenor saxophonist Ben Webster (on the first date), and trumpeter/violinist Ray Nance (on the second).

Duke Ellington & His Orchestra toured Europe in November 1969, a time when Duke was still at the top of his powers. The new CD is a recording of the whole of an excellent concert held at De Doelen Concert Hall in Rotterdam—a venue famous for its splendid acoustics.

The ambience is remarkable: The audience is audibly enthusiastic and these high spirits clearly influence the band. Duke Ellington and the orchestra gave two concerts on November 7th, and even though this is the second one, the musicians sound nothing but lively and fresh.Still in a brilliant mood after two concerts, Duke Ellington even played an after-party concert with a quartet—Storyville Records hopes to issue these recordings in the future.

The repertoire includes classics such as “Take the A Train” and “Don’t Get Around Much More” rarely heard as swinging as on this day, vigorous and fresh versions of “Kinda Dukish” and “Rockin’ In Rhythm” and the newer 1966 composition “La Plus Belle Africaine”, the centerpiece of the concert.
