Cochineal Red • The art history of a color

From antiquity to the present day, color has been embedded with cultural meaning. Associated with blood, fire, fertility, and life force, the color red has always been extremely difficult to achieve and thus highly prized. This book discusses the origin of the red colorant derived from the insect cochineal, its early use in Precolumbian ritual textiles from Mexico and Peru, and the spread of the American dyestuff through cultural interchange following the Spanish discovery and conquest of the New World in the 16th century. Drawing on examples from the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, it documents the use of this red-colored treasure in several media and throughout the world.

El encuentro entre ambas tradiciones culturales, es decir, la española y la autóctona, supuso un conflicto a la vez que un intercambio de cosmovisiones, un fenómeno que impactó en ambas sociedades y se reflejó en la obra de sus artistas.

El imperio inca llegó a su fin cuando fue superado militarmente por las fuerzas invasoras, pero muchos aspectos de su cultura material subsistieron, aunque transformados, en un nuevo contexto político.

 

Art Of Aztec Mexico • Treasures Of Tenochtitlan

Aztec culture has been the subject of scholarly curiosity since the Spanish conquest of the New World in the 16th century. A vast body of surviving ethnohistorical records and many archaeological excavations have revealed the nature of Aztec society more clearly than that of any other pre-Columbian people. By the 20th century, interest in the Aztecs had waned, and archaeologists, anthropologists, and art historians turned their attention to other, lesser-known cultures of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. From 1978 to 1982, however, excavations in downtown Mexico City gave new impetus to Aztec research, particularly the discovery of the ritual heart of the Aztec empire, the Templo Mayor and Tenochtitlan. This catalog documents an exhibition that accompanied a scholarly symposium at Dumbarton Oaks on the results of the Templo Mayor excavations and includes works from 23 collections.

El Manual propone las pautas necesarias para un análisis morfológico panamerindio de los diseños visuales aplicados en los Géneros Plásticos, habidos en Ia América antigua durante más de tres mil años. En el núcleo de las altas y medias culturas, se difundió una enorme civilización neotítica, con religiones annimistas similares y gran desarrollo agrario. Tales culturas, tuvieron numerosas políticas, teocráticas o militares; urbanismos y arquitecturas con diversas técnicas constructivas; una masiva obra de culto ptástica, escultórica y cerámica, dibujada y pintada, textil y orfebreril, de acuerdo con tatentos para Ia configuración de enésimos diseños morfológicos autóctonos.
