Chico Hamilton • Chico Hamilton Trio
Review by Michael G. Nastos
Chico Hamilton's earliest bands in a trio setting featured two fine rising stars of jazz guitar in Howard Roberts and Jim Hall. With the always exceptional George Duvivier playing bass throughout, these three-piece bands laid a foundation for many of Hamilton's more famous groups in the '60s that sported sidemen Larry Coryell and Gabor Szabo. There are hints of the hardcore jazz swing and Latin boogaloo amalgam that Hamilton would perfect, but for this compilation of recordings originally for the Pacific Jazz label, you hear his immaculate work on brushes, more prevalent than his sticks, although many tunes combine the two as he switches off. The eight tracks with the refined playing of Roberts move from a delicate, tasteful version of "Broadway," through the slow, somewhat abstract "Street of Drums," and the ballad "What Is There to Say?" But then the pace picks up with the quick "Nuttye" reinforced by backdrop scat, and the bass-led bop-to-funk "Buddy Boo," where Hamilton's developing style is emerging. Rumbling and tribal drums for the late-night "Uganda" buoys the patient guitar of Roberts, while the two-minute shortie "Lollypop" is a delicious call and response bopper. As polished as the playing of Roberts is, the sessions with the brilliant Jim Hall are the gems of the set, with all of the compositions penned by Duvivier. "Autumn Landscape" is a bit somber and regretful, while "Porch Light" reads angular à la Thelonious Monk, with the guitarist stepping up. A unique, fluid, and dynamic voice at this stage of his career, Hall holds sway in a consistent mezzo piano volume for the bop-tinged "Blues on the Rocks" before Hamilton's deft solo on brushes, but with the wire flanges plays his tom-toms in ultra melodic and inventive fashion for "Skynned Strings." An entry point recording for Chico Hamilton, it displays his savory good common sense well before being more trend- and fashion-conscious, as psychedelia and fusion took over commercialized jazz. What needs to be recognized is that Hamilton did not so much assimilate the trends, but modified and adapted his music to the sign of the times and his own unique talents. This LP represents him at a more innocent time, when jazz was not so adulterated by more popular forms, and it's a fine West Coast-style time capsule for the era.

Chico Hamilton • Complete Studio Sessions [1956-1957]
Review by Michael G. Nastos
This is the fourth Fresh Sound CD reissuing drummer Chico Hamilton's early ensembles to come out, and it is perhaps his most important grouping. The quintet played originals and standard covers that combined elements of Eastern and Western strains of mainstream and chamber jazz with instruments like flute, cello, and guitar. Hamilton created new music that some scratched their heads at, but most understood and enjoyed its softer tones and rounded edges. These studio works from four Los Angeles based sessions released on the Pacific Jazz, World Pacific, and Decca labels stem from the second version of Hamilton's quintet, which originally included Jim Hall and Buddy Collette. When Hall joined the Jimmy Giuffre trio, the tasteful guitarist John Pisano was recruited, then original woodwind player Buddy Collette left for greener pastures, and multi-instrumentalist Paul Horn was asked to join. Cellist Fred Katz and bassist Carson Smith remained, retaining the classical spirit of the group, but the addition of Pisano and Horn did nothing to diminish what the ensemble sound had attained, and would embellish. And it is their compositions that distinguish this music from any other group of the era, save that of Dave Brubeck. Smith's "Chanel #5" is a fluid, sprightly flute/cello waltz with Horn's Paul Desmond style alto sax added on. "Beanstalk" is an easy swinger merging melodies of "Love Me or Leave Me" and "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," while "Mr. Smith Goes to Town" takes off with Smith's witty bass leading the charge. Of the classically oriented compositions of Katz, the beautiful ballad "Lillian" is as romantic as can be with Horn's alto singing his heart out, while "Reflections" has Horn's evocative and pristine flute countering a pristine cello from the author. Hall's tunes remained in the repertoire, especially the extraordinary "Siete-Cuatro" in 7/8 with ostinato bass, Horn's wonderful textures on alto, repeat guitar lines, legato cello, and tambourine accents. There are three abbreviated versions of Hall's band theme "I Know," a classic read of "Satin Doll," an intriguing calypso infused "Soft Winds," an outstanding take of "September Song" where Horn's clarinet and the cello of Katz weep mournfully about the change of season and lost love, and a fine flute front loaded Latin snake charmer style identifying the classic "Caravan." Collette also left behind "Blue Sands" and "The Ghost," performed on the Stars of Jazz ABC television program on Christmas Eve of 1956. The former is an exotic discourse in mysterious notions, the latter using very clever interplay between the five instrumentalists. Hamilton plays brushes and little instruments for the most part, composed two tracks where he is the featured soloist, and co-composed another four with Katz that appeared in the film of Sweet Smell of Success. There is a full CD of that movie soundtrack available on a separate CD that is the fifth reissued Fresh Sound CD featuring this ensemble. While this is not absolutely the complete studio recordings of this legendary ensemble, it is ultimately substantive, representing a marvelous sound that is as appealing as any in the modern post-bop idiom, and ranks favorably with any chamber jazz attempts of any era.

The Chico Hamilton Quintet • Transfusion
Review by Scott Yanow
The first four CDs released by Studio West, a subsidiary of V.S.O.P., are all taken from concise (around three minutes apiece) performances that were made to be used as part of the radio show "The Navy Swings." This particular release features performances by one of drummer Chico Hamilton's most stimulating groups, a quintet comprised of Charles Lloyd (on tenor, flute and alto), guitarist Gabor Szabo, trombonist George Bohanon, bassist Albert Stinson and the drummer/leader. Because the individual selections are briefer than usual, in many cases only one soloist is featured on each cut. But overall, there is plenty of solo space for Lloyd (very much playing in a Coltrane vein), Bohanon and Szabo. The mixture of seven standards with nine Lloyd originals works quite well with plenty of variety in moods and tempoes. An excellent all-around showcase for this much underrated but very timeless unit.

Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker • Where It Starts It Ends
Gerry Mulligan, who was primarily known as a saxophonist, but was an expert exponent of clarinet and piano as well as being a highly-respected arranger, was one of the giants of post-war modern jazz and was one of the leading lights in the cool jazz movement focused on the West Coast.
In 1952 he began a legendary collaboration with the young lyrical trumpeter Chet Baker, newly-arrived on the jazz scene after an Army career, with the primary era of their professional relationship ending in 1953 when Mulligan was jailed on narcotics charges.
Baker's melodic style fit well with Mulligan's, leading them to create improvised contrapuntal textures free from the rigid confines of a piano-enforced chordal structure. This great set comprises some of the best recordings they made together during this time as part of Gerry Mulligans quartet.
After the first sessions, which involved pianist Jimmy Rowles, Mulligan developed an innovative piano-less line-up, using bass and drums to make up the quartets, with the pairings being Bobby Whitlock (bass) and and Chico Hamilton (drums), and Carson Smith (bass) and Larry Bunker (drums).
It offers fascinating insights into the the way Mulligan and Baker developed an intuitive rapport, and an absorbing collection of landmark modern jazz performances.

Chico Hamilton • Chico Hamilton With Paul Horn
Review by Scott Yanow
This album draws its material from three separate sessions led by drummer Chico Hamilton. Hamilton teams up with guitarist Howard Roberts and bassist George Duvivier for two songs, has two others in a trio with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist George Duvivier, and for the final four numbers is heard in the second version of his famous Quintet (the only selections that actually include Paul Horn). The latter selections feature Horn on various reeds (flute, clarinet, tenor, alto and piccolo), cellist Fred Katz (who wrote the four songs), guitarist John Pisano, bassist Carson Smith, and Hamilton.

VA • The Cool Scene - Twelve New Ways To Fly
by Thom Jurek
Despite its title, The Cool Scene at Cafe Bizarre: Twelve New Ways to Fly is one of the more unusual retrospective compilations to be issued in the 21st century. The Cafe Bizarre may have become truly infamous in the late 1960s as an East Village haven for radicals and psychedelic experimenting philosophers. That said, in the later '50s and early '60s it was also a cathedral for the Beat writers and various elements of the jazz scene. This collection features poets reading their works as well musical selections by the Cafe's more famous patrons from the jazz world: Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano, Roy Eldridge, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton, and even George Shearing. Most of the poetry on this set is by long-faded personas we never knew, and sounds like it: nostalgic yet reverent and intense imitations of works by their more well-known forebears. In other words, the works of the Mad Monk, Ellie Girl with Seven Beat Sulks, Ringo Angel (who sounds like a professor and might have even become one), Felix Lupus, Stevenson Phillips, and Jamaica Johnny Cayonne are here for either nostalgia or ridicule, but they contain a certain innocence that long ago died in America. There are other musical selections as well, and all of it adds up to a curiosity piece for those obsessed with history or the dregs of Beat-era poetry.

Chico Hamilton • A Different Journey
Review by Scott Yanow
