Making a solo guitar album work is not an easy task. It's not enough to be a technical wizard; veteran Mimi Fox is that and more. You also have to be able to blend a tasteful play list, sensitivity to the music, enough fresh ideas so as not to become dull, and a certain flamboyance (but not so much that it overwhelms the listener). Fox achieves all of that and more on her fourth album as a leader. The play list is made up of standards -- not only those from the Great American Songbook, but jazz standards as well, written by Wayne Shorter, Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane, and Charlie Parker. She gives each standard its due, being romantically pleasing on such oldies as "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and modernly impressionistic on "Naima." "Wave" is a performance of a true artist. Fox keeps the listener in suspense, going through several sets of improvisations before she sneaks up on the melody, leading into a full exposition of it. During this track, Fox dabbles a bit in some classical music formations. Dameron's "Ladybird" provides the opportunity for a swashbuckling, let-it-all-hang-out, dazzling display of digital dexterity. Fox stays with the electric guitar, but it's not so highly juiced that the resonance drowns out or smears over the theme of the song she is performing. For example, on one of jazz artists' favorite tunes, "Stella By Starlight," there's a richness and a deepness that fully capture the essence of this romantic ballad. Here, and elsewhere on this fine release, Fox plays with a skilled passion that will quickly entice and snare any audience. Recommended.

Hacer que un álbum de guitarra solista funcione no es una tarea fácil. No basta con ser un mago técnico; La veterana Mimi Fox es eso y más. Guitarist Mimi Fox has long been a fixture in the San Francisco Bay area. A fine hard bop-based guitarist with a sound of her own (that sometimes hints a little at Grant Green), Fox is in excellent form throughout this CD. Backed on most selections by a local trio, Fox alternates stimulating originals with such standards as "Night and Day" and "My Romance." This set (recorded at a couple of clubs in 1991-1992, and before a live audience in a studio in 1995) concludes with an eight-minute, three-song unaccompanied medley during which Mimi Fox shows off her talents on acoustic guitar. Fine music.

Named a "rising star" in Down Beat's 2003 Critics Poll not long after being profiled in the magazine's feature "66 Hot 6 Stringers," Mimi Fox takes her best jab at transcending the status of up-and-comer on this tight and swinging, supremely melodic, yet wildly improvisational modern bop date. Lest listeners forget the vibe she's aiming for, the San Francisco-based guitar goddess starts from the gate with a furious flurry of electricity on the speedy intro tune, "East Coast Attitude." Jazz fans who prefer finesse and cool over frenetic chops will enjoy the more subtle rhythms and lush melody of the Caribbean-flavored "Sosua," which was inspired by some impromptu jamming with street musicians in the Dominican Republic. The most appealing aspect of the disc is her eclectic stylistic approach, which ranges from the seductive soul of "Buddy's Blues" to the graceful contemplation of "Raquel, Mi Amor" and the tender solo exercise "Darn That Dream." She swings back up for the strutting vibe of "On the Sunny Side of the Street" before closing with a jazz-rock arrangement of the Beatles' "She's a Woman," essentially a bouncy duet between Fox and bassist/clapper Jon Evans. That song inspired the album's title, but on a deeper level, it's a declaration that when it comes to great new females in jazz, Fox is clearly at the top of a short list.

From virtuoso solo guitar to performances of her original music with orchestra, Mimi truly does it all. She has performed with fellow guitarists Charlie Byrd and Charlie Hunter, as well as with Grammy award winner David Sanchez, saxophonist Don Lanphere, Manhattan Transfer's Janis Siegel, German Hammond B3 organ phenomenon Barbara Dennerlien, among many others. She has shared the bill with a wide array of artists including Diana Krall, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Burrell, and John Sebastian, and has been guest soloist with several orchestras, including Orchestra Sonoma, performing her original scores. Her most recently released recording, Standards (Origin Records), is a solo guitar tour de force and has received rave reviews including one from Jim Josselyn in Cadence Magazine who said, “This may be the finest solo jazz guitar playing I have ever heard.” Charles Chapman called Mimi “a fiery virtuoso” in Just Jazz Guitar magazine, and said, “This is jazz guitar at its best.”

Kicks, her second CD as a leader, showcased her extraordinary soloing and featured special guests Joey DeFrancesco on organ, keyboardist Russell Ferrante, drummer Will Kennedy, and guitarist Charlie Hunter. Kicks quickly rose to fifth place on jazz radio charts and number 20 on Billboard jazz charts. She was inspired by the wide variety of music enjoyed by her family - show tunes, classical, Dixieland, Motown - and her own youthful inclination toward pop, folk, and R&B. When she was fourteen, she bought her first jazz album “because it was on sale.” The one she chose had no guitarist, but she was “blown away” by it. That album, John Coltrane's classic Giant Steps, changed the course of her musical life.

She began touring right out of high school and eventually moved to San Francisco in 1979, where she became a sought-after musician. She is Chair of the Guitar Department at the innovative Jazzschool in Berkeley, California, and has appeared as guest clinician at the University of Southern California, Musician's Institute of Technology, CalArts, University of Connecticut, University of Oregon, the Britt Music Festival, and others. She has just written a book on jazz guitar studies to be published by Mel Bay Publications.

Empezó a hacer giras al salir del instituto y se mudó a San Francisco en 1979, donde se convirtió en una música muy solicitada. Es presidenta del Departamento de Guitarra de la innovadora escuela de jazz de Berkeley, California, y ha sido invitada a participar en la Universidad de California del Sur, el Instituto de Tecnología para Músicos, CalArts, la Universidad de Connecticut, la Universidad de Oregón y el Festival de Música Britt, entre otros. Acaba de escribir un libro sobre estudios de guitarra de jazz que será publicado por Mel Bay Publications.
