Las grandes estrellas de la guitarra gitana, los herederos de Django Reinhardt, se pueden contar con los dedos de una mano. Con este nuevo álbum Complicité, Angelo Debarre ha querido componer a cuatro manos con el virtuoso violinista Marius Apostol. Más allá de la técnica evidente, las obras alcanzan cimas de lirismo demostrando, si es necesario, el talento compositivo de estos dos músicos.

Damir Kukuruzović (20 August 1975 – 12 December 2020) was a Croatian jazz guitarist. He was the most famous Croatian representative of gypsy jazz.

Born in Sisak, Kukuruzović was the founder of the Damir Kukuruzović Django Group, with whom he recorded several albums and played at numerous international jazz festivals. He also performed with musicians such as Stochelo Rosenberg, Paulus Schäfer, Angelo Debarre, Raphaël Faÿs, Ludovic Beier, Wawau Adler, Yorgui Loeffler, Joscho Stephan, Vlatko Stefanovski and Robin Nolan. In 2019 he recorded the hit Zoran pjeva Arsena with Zoran Predin.

He was also the founder-director of the Siscia Jazz Club and organizer of the Siscia Open Jazz & Blues Festival and other jazz festivals in Croatia. In 2011, Kukuruzović was awarded the prize for the most famous acoustic jazz guitarist in Croatia. In 2013 he was honored for exceptional guitar skills and the promotion of Croatian jazz music in the world.

In the election campaign for the 2011 Croatian parliamentary election, Kukuruzović supported the right-wing Croatian Party of Rights; in the election for the city council in Sisak in 2013, he stood as a candidate for their split-off Croatian Party of Rights Dr. Ante Starčević.

Kukuruzović died from COVID-19 on 12 December 2020, at age 45, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Croatia, after being hospitalized in Zagreb for several weeks.

Marius Apostol • Bohemian Jazz Project

Installé en France depuis une douzaine d’année, Marius Apostol, qui sort aujourd’hui son premier disque en leader, est loin d’être un inconnu. Ce premier prix de conservatoire à Bucarest qui a d’abord fait ses armes au sein de la formation tsigane Urs Karpatz à la fin des années 90 a très vite élargi son répertoire au jazz, accompagnant depuis toutes les pointures du swing manouche : Biréli Lagrène, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg et pas mal d’autres...

C’est pourtant avec une formation assez inattendue au vu de son CV que Marius a décidé de nous proposer son premier projet : rythmique piano (Manuel Rocheman, svp...!), contrebasse (Marc Michel Le Bévillon), batterie (Luis Augusto), on n’est pas vraiment dans du Hot Club de France façon Django/Grappelli, mais dans le classique quartet de jazz. Angelo Debarre viendra tout de même pousser quelques chorus électriques et virtuoses sur trois titres au swing enlevé (Swing 2012, Swing d’Ajaccio et le très bop Move toujours up-tempo), tout comme son complice Ludovic Beier à l’accordina sur la bossa Mary Bianca et très en verve sur la jolie ballade Elegance.

Chaque musicien trouve parfaitement sa place dans ce quartet traditionnel où s’imposent maîtrise, équilibre et musicalité. La solidité de la rythmique permet toutes les audaces au violoniste, et la complicité avec Manuel Rocheman, grand coloriste, est immédiatement évidente ; écoutez comme ses inventions harmoniques sur Vous et moi répondent admirablement à la simplicité du thème (signé Django) pris par le leader.
L’excellence et la virtuosité de Marius Apostol, qui signe ici huit titres sur les douze plages de l’album, n’est plus à démontrée. Aussi à l’aise en classique (cf l’intro de Swing Stelian) qu’en jazz, sur les balades (magnifique version de Beautiful love) autant que sur les tempo bop (Move) ou les swings enlevés (Swing 2012, Swing d’Ajaccio) son jeu reste toujours admirablement fluide, juste, sensible et inventif. Et quand par endroit, son phrasé retrouve les accents roumains de ses origines (Douceur bohémienne, Empreinte) sa musique n’en devient que plus attachante...
Avec Bohemian Jazz Project et sa rythmique de luxe, Marius Apostol signe donc premier disque audacieux, sincère et parfaitement convaincant. On aimerait d’ailleurs beaucoup le voir suivi d’une tournée sur les routes de France ! Messieurs les festivaliers...

Sin embargo, es con una formación bastante inesperada en vista de su currículum que Marius decidió proponer su primer proyecto: piano rítmico (Manuel Rocheman, por favor...!), contrabajo (Marc Michel Le Bévillon), batería (Luis Augusto), no estamos realmente en el Hot Club de Francia como Django/Grappelli, sino en el cuarteto de jazz clásico. Angelo Debarre vendrá sin embargo a empujar algunos coros eléctricos y virtuosos en tres pistas con un swing muy animado (Swing 2012, Swing d'Ajaccio y el muy bop Move siempre up-tempo), al igual que su cómplice Ludovic Beier en la accordina en la bossa Mary Bianca y muy animado en la bonita balada Elegance.

Cada músico encuentra su lugar perfectamente en este cuarteto tradicional donde la maestría, el equilibrio y la musicalidad son esenciales. La solidez del ritmo permite al violinista todas las audacias, y la complicidad con Manuel Rocheman, gran colorista, es inmediatamente obvia; escucha cómo sus inventos armónicos sobre Tú y yo responden admirablemente a la sencillez del tema (firmado Django) tomado por el líder.
La excelencia y el virtuosismo de Marius Apostol, que firma aquí ocho temas en los doce del álbum, ya no se puede demostrar. Igualmente a gusto en la música clásica (cf. la introducción de Swing Stelian) como en el jazz, en las baladas (magnífica versión de Beautiful Love) así como en el tempo del bop (Move) o en los columpios (Swing 2012, Swing d'Ajaccio), su forma de tocar siempre permanece admirablemente fluida, justa, sensible e inventiva. Y cuando, en algunos lugares, su fraseo encuentra los acentos rumanos de sus orígenes (Douceur bohémienne, Empreinte) su música se hace más entrañable...
Con Bohemian Jazz Project y su lujosa rítmica, Marius Apostol firma así un primer disco audaz, sincero y perfectamente convincente. ¡Nos encantaría verlo seguido de una gira por los caminos de Francia! Los asistentes al festival...

 Settled in France for a dozen years now, Marius Apostol, who is now releasing his first album as a leader, is far from being an unknown. This first prize winner at the Bucharest Conservatory, who first gained experience with the Gypsy band Urs Karpatz at the end of the 1990s, very quickly expanded his repertoire to include jazz, accompanying all the greats of gypsy swing: Biréli Lagrène, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg and many others...

Each musician finds perfectly his place in this traditional quartet where mastery, balance and musicality are essential. The solidity of the rhythm allows the violinist all the audacities, and the complicity with Manuel Rocheman, great colorist, is immediately obvious; listen how his harmonic inventions on You and Me respond admirably to the simplicity of the theme (signed Django) taken by the leader.
The excellence and virtuosity of Marius Apostol, who signs here eight titles on the twelve tracks of the album, is no longer to be demonstrated. Equally at ease in classical music (see the intro of Swing Stelian) as in jazz, on ballads (magnificent version of Beautiful Love) as much as on bop tempo (Move) or the swings removed (Swing 2012, Swing d'Ajaccio) his playing always remains admirably fluid, fair, sensitive and inventive. Hot Club De Norvège • Angelo Is Back In Town

 

 Hot Club de Norvège is a string jazz quartet from Norway, established in 1979, by guitarist Jon Larsen with childhood friends Per Frydenlund and Svein Aarbostad.

They are influenced by the music of Hot Club de France, and the French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. They formed a quartet with violinist Ivar Brodahl (1928–2003), later replaced by Finn Hauge, that became part of the international renaissance of the gypsy jazz in the 1980s.

Hot Club de Norvege has worked with Stéphane Grappelli, Jimmy Rosenberg, Stochelo Rosenberg, Nigel Kennedy, and the Vertavo String Quartet.

In 1980 they started the Django Festival in Norway.

After his musical training at the Rachmaninov Conservatory in Paris, he enriched his musical sensibility in Brazil. He participated in numerous tours of gypsy music in Eastern Europe and in the United States, Canada, Japan and South Africa.

Ludovic Beier nació en 1978, aprendió el acordeón de su padre y se beneficia de ser parte de una familia de músicos. Fue educado en la tradición francesa del instrumento y se volcó hacia el jazz hace unos años. Él tiene un espíritu, el estilo de aventura que se aleja en todo tipo de caminos.

Está ejecutando la escena francesa y europea con algunos de los mejores ejecutantes de la Django/Swing estilo de jazz incluyendo a Angelo Debarre, Dorado Schmitt, Florin Niculescu. Born in 1978, Ludovic Beier learned the accordion from his father and benefits from being part of a musical family. He was brought up in the French tradition of the instrument and turned to jazz a few years ago. He has a spirited, adventurous style which strays into all kinds of byways. Only 27 years old, he is playing on the French and European scene with some of the top players of the Django/Swing Jazz style including Angelo Debarre, Dorado Schmitt, Florin Niculescu, He certainly is giving the accordion a new name as his fingers goacross the keys in an almost unbelievable way, both swinging and amazingly creative in his improvisation. Along with his virtuoso playing, he composes and arranges, and has his own band, Ludovic Beier Quartet, to perform his "cool and latin" French jazz.

Joseph "Jimmy" Rosenberg (born 10 April 1980) is a Dutch Sinto-Romani guitarist known for his virtuoso playing of gypsy jazz.
Music career

A cousin of Stochelo Rosenberg, Jimmy Rosenberg started playing guitar when he was seven years old. Two years later he led his own trio, the Gypsy Kids, which played in the Gypsy jazz tradition and appeared on the British documentary Django Legacy. The trio released its first album, Safari, when Rosenberg was twelve. A year later Rosenberg released his debut solo album, Swinging with Jimmy Rosenberg.

To avoid a lawsuit by the Gipsy Kings, the Gypsy Kids changed their name to Sinti in 1989. In 1995, the group consisted of Jimmy Rosenberg, Johnny Rosenberg, and Rinus Steinbach. They performed at the Django Reinhardt Festival in France and toured the U.S. Rosenberg pursued a solo career in 1997.

In 2000 he made his debut at Carnegie Hall as part of the Django Reinhardt Festival at Birdland in New York City. He has worked with Norwegians such as Hot Club de Norvège, Ola Kvernberg, and Stian Carstensen. Internationally, he has worked with Romane, Jon Larsen, Andreas Öberg, Bireli Lagrene, Angelo Debarre, Frank Vignola, and Willie Nelson.

His life is documented in the Dutch film The Father, the Son, and the Talent (Dutch: Jimmy Rosenberg - de vader, de zoon & het talent; 2007), directed by Jeroen Berkvens. The film is an account of Rosenberg's relationship with his father and his struggles with drugs. It documents the high regard given to him by James Brown, Stevie Wonder and others.

The documentary film Jon & Jimmy, about his long but turbulent relationship with jazz guitarist Jon Larsen, was released in 2010 and won the Dutch Edison Award.

Rosenberg returned to performing in 2007, but he dropped out again the following year. Jon Larsen said, "Jimmy Rosenberg is one of the greatest talents in the jazz guitar world, ever, and one of the greatest tragedies. ... We worked together for twelve fantastic years before his final collapses in 2004, and we were like brothers, touring for months on end and making nine studio recordings together. During those years I heard some of the most fantastic music ever played on guitar."
