Michel Petrucciani • So What

Review
The great pianist Michel Petrucciani recorded for the Dreyfus label during the six years before his 1999 death. Producer/label owner Francis Dreyfus is worried about Petrucciani being underrated if not completely forgotten, so he put together this sampler of previously released material covering the pianist's 2Dreyfus period. Petrucciani is heard solo, dueting with his father guitarist Tony Petrucciani ("Michel's Blues"), interacting with organist Eddy Louiss, in a trio with bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Steve Gadd, collaborating with violinist Stephane Grappelli (the boppish "Little Peace in C for U" and "Pennies From Heaven"), playing in a sextet with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, and being joined by the Graffiti String Quartet. "Pennies From Heaven" was only previously out on a privately issued CD. Dreyfus did a fine job of picking out the most exciting and emotional selections from his catalog of Petrucciani gems, so one gets to hear one highpoint after another throughout this single-CD sampler. Michel Petrucciani was one of the greats and So What offers plenty of evidence.

Revisar

Eddy Louiss (2 May 1941 – 30 June 2015) was a French jazz musician.

His primary instrument was the Hammond organ. As a vocalist, he was a member of Les Double Six of Paris from 1961 through 1963.

He worked with Kenny Clarke, René Thomas, and Jean-Luc Ponty. He was a member of the Stan Getz quartet (with René Thomas and Bernard Lubat) that recorded the Getz album Dynasty (1971).

Eddy Louiss • Eddy Louiss Trio

Review by Scott Yanow
Eddy Louiss is one of the most underrated organists of all time, probably because he has always been based in his native France. This 1991 CD puts the focus on the talented and fairly original organist, whose style falls between Jimmy Smith and Wild Bill Davis. Joined by guitarist Rene Thomas and drummer Kenny Clarke for a studio set (the only one by this particular trio), Louiss performs two basic originals (including Clarke's "Don't Want Nothin'," awhich uses the "Ja Da" chord changes), Miles Davis' "Nardis," a heated version of "Hot House," Horace Silver's catchy "No Smoking" and "You've Changed." An excellent all-around showcase that serves as a fine introduction to the very viable organist.
