Bruce Katz • Three Feet Off The Ground

It has been said that instrumentalist Bruce Katz has one foot in jazz and the other foot in the blues, but those aren't the only styles that interest the organist/pianist; rock, soul, and gospel are also part of what he does. All of those influences assert themselves on Three Feet Off the Ground, which tends to be more aggressive and rockin' than the album that preceded it, 1997's Mississippi Moan. "Wrecking Ball" and "Beef Jerky" (which brings to mind Lee Morgan's "The Sidewinder") are definitely among the more forceful things Katz has recorded, and his guitarist Julien Kasper sounds equally uninhibited. Although Katz is a talented acoustic pianist with a healthy appreciation of Albert Ammons, his piano playing takes a back seat to the organ this time. Katz's Hammond B-3 dominates the CD, and one is reminded how appealing he is on the instrument. As an organist, Katz has a gritty, earthy sound that is somewhere between Jimmy Smith and Stax hero Booker T. Jones (of Booker T. & the MG's fame). Three Feet Off the Ground is a release that blues, jazz, and rock fans alike will want to hear.

Rarely does a musician display equally brilliant dexterity and creativity in both blues and jazz. One such rare bird is Bruce Katz, who not only meets these characteristics, but excels in his understanding of the genres and unleashes the strongest assets of each. Best known as a member of Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters, Katz took up music at age five when he outperformed his sister on classical pieces that she was assigned for piano lessons. Discovering classic jazz and a Bessie Smith record planted the seeds of a passion for jazz and blues. In the early '80s, his first major supporting gig was for Big Mama Thornton; he then worked and toured with Barrence Whitfield & the Savages, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Witherspoon, Johnny Adams, and Tiger Okoshi. Burned out from life on the road, he enrolled at the New England Conservatory, earning a master's degree in jazz. Five months after graduation, Katz met Ronnie Earl, who hired him.

During his nearly five-year stint with Earl, Katz performed on six CDs and co-wrote songs with Earl, including "The Colour of Love," "Ice Cream Man," and "Hippology." In 1992 Katz debuted his first solo album, Crescent Crawl, and released Transformation the following year. Just before the release of Mississippi Moan, Katz left the Broadcasters to concentrate on his solo career. His album roster includes 1993's Transformation, 1997's Mississippi Moan, 2000's Three Feet to the Ground, 2004's Deeper Blue, and 2008's Live! At the Firefly. Katz has also been a member of Gregg Allman's group, and has toured as pianist with the Allman Brothers Band. In addition to performing and recording, Katz teaches piano and was an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music, where he taught the school's first-ever in-depth blues course. He has released two educational DVDs: Breakthrough Blues Piano (2016) and Play Like Ray (2018).

The Bruce Katz Band • A Deeper Blue

Review:

Keyboardist Bruce Katz showcases his jazz-meets-blues chops on Deeper Blue. Featuring Katz on both the Hammond B-3 organ and piano, the results sound something like a progressive, post-bop jazz group heavily into early-period Ray Charles. Although Katz is the featured player here, the album plays more like a group effort with guitarists Ronnie Earl and Michael Williams coming front and center much of the time. To these ends, "(Why Don't You Just) Go Home!" is a quick and funky Medeski, Martin & Wood-style burner, "Greasy Sticks" is a suitably greasified shuffle, and "Slinky" is a menacing and atmospheric mid-tempo modern blues. Longtime Katz fans and listeners searching for some rootsy and intelligent improvisational music should find much to enjoy here.
