Joel Paterson • Wheelhouse Rag

Description from Jalopy Records / Bandcamp:
Guitar and steel guitar wizard Joel Paterson has been a mainstay of the Chicago roots music scene for over twenty years, playing with many bands and showcasing his unique blend of jazz, blues, rockabilly, country and western swing. In addition to solo shows, his projects include The Joel Paterson Trio, The Western Elstons, and The Joel Paterson Quartet (seen weekly at The Green Mill in Chicago). Joel can be heard on the recordings of the Cactus Blossoms, JD McPherson, Kelly Hogan, Pokey LaFarge, and Deke Dickerson.

Wheelhouse Rag is a 14-track collection of original rags and country blues on solo, fingerpicked acoustic guitar. The all-acoustic, 1920s-inspired Wheelhouse Rag may at first seem like a genre shift for the guitarist — best known for his instrumental, multi-track recordings reminiscent of Les Paul and Chet Atkins — but Joel learned to play guitar by ear from the records of acoustic legends like Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Reverend Gary Davis and Big Bill Broonzy. He later expanded his repertoire to include the techniques of thumb-picking giants Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. These influences can be heard throughout the album, mixed with many more twists from the artist's mind.

"Of all the 'vintage' artists injecting new life into bygone styles with originality and a sense of humor, Joel Paterson just might top the list." — Dan Forte, Vintage Guitar Magazine

"Guitarist Paterson's free-ranging music defies easy categorization. He addresses classic country, blues and Tin Pan Alley tunes as timeless works that reward repeated listening." — Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

— Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

The Insomniacs • At Least I´m Not With You

Album Notes
Seemingly out of nowhere, The Insomniacs burst onto the scene in 2007 with their debut release "Left Coast Blues," garnering the band a 2007 Muddy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Act and a 2008 Blues Music Award nomination for best new artist debut. Led by 27-year old vocalist/guitarist Vyasa Dodson, The Insomniacs now return with their sophomore effort featuring an explosive mix of infectious originals and expertly chosen covers augmented by special guests Al Blake (Hollywood Blue Flames) and Mitch Kashmar on harmonica, Joel Paterson on pedal steel guitar, and Jeff Turmes on tenor & baritone sax. The end result is an album full of wildly contagious, feel good music guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

Review by AllMusic
The Insomniacs came blazing out of the gate with a big, bold West Coast blues sound that was as much R&B as it was jump blues and swing. Portland, OR is better known for its alt rock scene, but the Insomniacs have been burning up local clubs since they launched their career in 2007. They won that year's Muddy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Act, despite their retro feel, and their first album, Left Coast Blues, was nominated for a Blues Music Award for Best Debut. They follow their impressive premiere with this platter, an even more remarkable set written and recorded in just two days. The band is tight and divides the program between obscure covers and their own high-octane originals that show them as an original force to be reckoned with. "Description Blues," the most traditional-sounding tune, is a tale of infidelity, and Vyasa Dodson's tortured vocal is full of passion and frustration. Alex Shakeri's Hammond B-3 tales an extended solo that's both jazzy and blue followed by Dodson's workout on guitar, full of bent notes, long sustains, and lightning-fast runs. "Maybe Sometime Later" is a Howlin' Wolf-style Chicago blues, a slow, swampy groove with a sly sexy lyric. "She Can Talk" tips its hat to the teenage rockers of the '50s, a portrait of a foxy chick laying waste to the male population with her dazzling chatter while Shakeri's piano drops some Jerry Lee Lewis into the mix. "20/20" is a wry take on the phrase "20/20 hindsight," a loose, shuffling lament about lost love and regret; Dodson's guitar and Shakeri's B-3 supply the fireworks. "Angry Surfer" is an unexpected side trip featuring Dodson's blend of twangy surf guitar licks and Chicago blues guitar and Shakeri's boogie-woogie piano. The rhythm section supplies a backbeat with a Latin feel to add to the complications. The instrumentals the Insomniacs lay down are just as compelling as their songs. "Root Beer Float" is a showcase for Dodson's guitar and Shakeri's piano; it's a jump blues played at a high-speed tempo. Dodson avoids blues clichés by playing mostly on the bass strings of the guitar, giving his lines a fat, chunky, rhythmic feel; Shakeri's right hand takes care of the high end while the rhythm section adds dynamics with unexpected stops and starts. The closer, "Insomniacs Boogie," is a horn-driven jump tune with Jeff Big Dad Turmes' sax and Dodson's guitar kicking the tune into overdrive as the band waves an energetic good bye. The group also shines on the covers: "Broke and Lonely," a Johnny Otis/Johnny "Guitar" Watson tune, receives a ragged, countrified makeover, Little Richard's "Directly from My Heart to You" gets a greasy, New Orleans R&B treatment, and Junior Wells' "Hoodoo Man Blues" is a smoky remake with guest harmonica player Mitch Kashmar contributing a soulful solo that would do Wells proud.

Jim Liban & The Joel Paterson Trio • I Say What I Mean

Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based, Jim Liban has been playing blues harp for a long time, was part of the psychedelic scene in San Francisco, once shared the stage with Hendrix and was a major part of the local Wisconsin scene for many years.  Less active in recent years as a result of personal tragedies, this record marks a significant return to the scene for a fine player and writer of original songs.

Jim gave guitarist Joel Paterson (Cash Box Kings, Joel Paterson Trio) his first break and Joel here repays the debt by providing excellent support throughout.  Along for the sessions was Joel’s regular rhythm section, Beau Sample on bass and Alex Hall on drums:  Mark Haines replaces Alex on six tracks and Jim’s son Mark Liban takes the drum seat for one cut.  Keys are added to six tracks by Scott Ligon.  A labour of love, Joel produced and arranged new versions of eleven of Jim’s extensive back catalogue and co-wrote three new tunes with Jim; Alex engineered and mastered the recordings and Mark Haines and Joel mixed the album.

In these days of CDs which are labelled blues but are essentially blues-rock it is refreshing to hear a genuine Chicago BLUES album.  The band leaves plenty of space, nobody overplays and the record swings like crazy. Every track here is excellent but let’s start with the three instrumentals written by Jim and Joel for the album.  “Cottonweed” is a fast-paced swinger with Jim playing clusters of notes at high speed, creating a sort of wah-wah effect on his harp, then interspersing some high pitch notes in James Cotton style, hence the title, one assumes; “Cold Stuff” opens with Joel’s choppy guitar providing a background for Jim to range far and wide across his harp, culminating in a note held for a very long time, quite a technical feat; “Quick Draw” has a Latin feel to the rhythm with Scott’s organ adding depth and Joel using slide very effectively.

Some of these songs are very personal.  Jim pays tribute to his late wife in the warm words of “Thank You For The Dance”, a gently swinging number with bubbling organ and fine guitar accents from Joel, Jim’s harp also having a lightness of touch that suits the song perfectly.

“No More Alcohol” tackles the issue of addiction head on in a sparse arrangement, Jim intoning the lyrics through his harp mike: “That’s it, I quit, no more alcohol”.  On the title track Jim gives a positive appraisal of himself on a tune that takes a Howling Wolf riff at the start but morphs into an even more swinging middle section with Joel delivering some great slide accents.

“Stop On By” has some terrific, swinging support from the band for Jim’s clear vocals about returning to his former home and some more fine blowing, this time in the lower register. “Tell Me Everything” asks for a full and frank admission, Jim than asking how he can then trust the person concerned!

Elsewhere Jim plays a slow, late night feeling blues in “Sad, Tired And Worried” but the main style here is swinging, gently on a cut like closer “Selfish Man” where Jim confesses that he wants to keep the girl all to himself or moving along at faster pace as on “Right Hand Blues” on which Jim and Joel duel very effectively across the middle section.

There is not a weak track here, everything is beautifully recorded with absolute clarity and the playing is first class.  This is a CD that every true blues fan should seek out and enjoy!  Highly recommended.

///////

Altamente recomendado.

Joel Paterson • Handful of Strings

"I always wanted to make a multi-tracked, Les Paul style recording. I finally finished the darn thing, so here it is, "Handful of Strings" for all you guitar geeks around the world. This album is dedicated to all my guitar heroes, including Les Paul, Buddy Merrill, Jorgen Ingmann, Charlie Christian, Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Jimmy Bryant, Jimmy Day, Jerry Byrd, Freddie King, Albert Collins, and too many more to mention here. Thanks for checking it out, hope you all enjoy it!" (~~Joel Paterson)

There once was a time when the “multiple guitar” style of recording flourished, pioneered by Les Paul and carried on by such luminaries as Buddy Merrill and Jorgen Ingmann. With the invention of multi-track recording, the adventuresome guitarist could create lush, swirling guitar orchestras, all overdubbed through a labor-intensive studio process.Somewhere along the way, the multiple guitar recording went out of vogue. Joel Paterson seeks to change all that with this phenomenal release, reviving the lost art of multiple guitar recording with “Handful of Strings,” the best album of its kind since Buddy Merrill left the Lawrence Welk Show.
Paterson is a monster player from Chicago who seems to soak up all the great American music styles like a sponge, and you’ll hear them all here, from jazz to blues to country and rock—and even funk.“Handful of Strings” is essential listening for any guitar geek and a must for anybody who digs guitars and guitar music. All hail Joel Paterson, Chicago’s guitar geek extraordinaire! (~~Deke Dickerson from Original Liner Notes)
