Another one of those lovely, timeless sets from Arbors, this one finds the clarinetist working out on a set of swingers where the newest tune is from 1960 and the label's usual suspects are no where in evidence. With nothing hoary about any of these chestnuts, this is how sophisticated listening is supposed to sound no matter when the tunes are pulled from. This melancholy date (released for the first time in 1986) was clarinetist Tony Scott's last before heading for Europe. He was mourning the deaths of many of his heroes, and among his pieces are "Misery (To Lady Day)," "Remembrance of Art Tatum" and "Requiem for 'Hot Lips' Page." On three selections, Scott is backed by the classic Bill Evans Trio (with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian). In addition, Scott plays baritone and guitar on one tune apiece and duets with guitarist Juan Sastre on the final number. However, even with the strong playing, the downbeat nature of the material makes this album of only historical interest.

Clarinettist and tenor saxophonist, Dunstan Coulber first came to the attention of the general public when he won the Perrier Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award in April 2000. Dunstan formed The Dunstan Coulber Quartet early in 1999 with a clear idea of the music he wanted to be playing. Firmly rooted in the swinging mainstream jazz tradition, the Quartet have pursued Dunstan's aim of bringing a fresh, up to date interpretation to the classics of the great American song book and out-of-the-way standards.

An excellent introduction to Jimmy Giuffre's unique music.
With guitarist Jim Hall, Giuffre is heard on clarinet, tenor, and baritone. The generally introverted music is wistful, has a fair amount of variety, and is melodic while still sounding advanced.
The thought-provoking and generally relaxed works feature a wide variety of instrumentation. Giuffre plays a fairly free "Fascinatin' Rhythm" in a Benny Goodman-type trio with pianist Rowles and drummer Shelly Manne, performs with a couple of other trios, uses three woodwinds plus bassist Ralph Pena on an atmospheric "My Funny Valentine“.
A very interesting album.

Una excelente introducción a la música única de Jimmy Giuffre.
Junto al guitarrista Jim Hall, Giuffre toca el clarinete, el tenor y el barítono. La música, en general introvertida, es melancólica, tiene bastante variedad y es melódica sin dejar de sonar avanzada.
Las obras, generalmente relajadas y que invitan a la reflexión, presentan una amplia variedad de instrumentación. Giuffre interpreta un «Fascinatin' Rhythm» bastante libre en un trío tipo Benny Goodman con el pianista Rowles y el batería Shelly Manne, actúa con un par de tríos más, utiliza tres vientos de madera más el bajista Ralph Pena en un atmosférico «My Funny Valentine».
Un álbum muy interesante.

Clarinetist George Lewis and his usual band of this period (which consisted of trumpeter Kid Howard, trombonist Jim Robinson, pianist Alton Purnell, Lawrence Marrero on banjo, bassist Slow Drag Pavageau and drummer Joe Watkins) are in better-than-average form on this well-recorded live set. Lewis and his group emphasize ensembles on the dozen New Orleans standards and the clarinetist/leader is in surprisingly extroverted form, easily the most impressive soloist. Fans of traditional jazz should go out of their way to pick up this CD. These performances were released for the first time in 1994.

Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw were among the most famous and beloved figures in swing music both as clarinet soloists and orchestra conductors. Th ey were still very active musically in 1957, when Buddy De Franco decided to record a series of sessions paying homage to them. Thirty-five performances were recorded (including four medleys containing three songs each) in four extended sessions made on four consecutive days and with two different groups (guitarist Barney Kessel, however, is present on most of the tracks). Th e fi rst two sessions included trumpeter Don Fagerquist, tenor saxophonist Georgie Auld and pianist Carl Perkins. T e second group includes trumpeter Ray Linn and another modern jazz pianist: Jimmy Rowles.

Charlie Byrd Trio • The Bossa Nova Years

Guitarist Charlie Byrd revisits a variety of bossa nova songs, including nine by Antonio Carlos Jobim on this pleasing and accessible set. What makes this CD stand out from his many similar dates is that Ken Peplowski's clarinet and tenor are well featured, adding variety to the music and a lead voice for Byrd to play off of. Otherwise the music is predictably excellent, with such classics as "One Note Samba," "Corcovado," "Dindi," "O Pato," and "The Girl from Ipanema" receiving very favorable treatment.
