Julian Priester • Spiritsville

Hard wailing hardbop, touched by some of the modernist sensibilities that Priester forged while working in his Chicago underground years that included brief stints with Sun Ra! The set's one of the best hardbop sides to be cut for the Jazzland label -- and it's got a relaxed soulful feel that puts it among some of the great lost jazz albums from the early 60s. Priester leads the group with a great deal of tightness, and players include a young McCoy Tyner on piano, the soulful Charles Davis on baritone sax, the excellent tenor player Walter Benton, and the always wonderful rhythm team of Sam Jones and Art Taylor. Tracks include "Blue Stride", "Excursion", "Chi Chi", and "Spiritsville". Very nice -- and very hard to find!

Thelonious Monk • 5 By Monk By 5

Review by Lindsay Planer
As the '50s drew to a close, so did Thelonious Monk's illustrious tenure on Riverside Records. In fact, the three dates needed for this title would be his penultimate for the label. The concept of the album consists of five Monk originals performed in a quintet setting. Ironically, this was the first time that Monk had recorded with a lineup that so prominently featured the "standard" bop rhythm section incorporating both a trumpet (or, in this case, cornet) and sax player. The quintet featured on 5 by Monk by 5 includes Monk (piano), Thad Jones (cornet), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Sam Jones (bass), and Art Taylor (drums). Rouse would become Monk's permanent tenor saxophonist for the majority of the 1960s. In what had become somewhat of a tradition, the disc's program consists of several of Monk's more established works as well as a few new compositions. One of the new works, "Jackie-ing" (incidentally, named after one of Monk's nieces), leads off the disc. It exemplifies the loose, disjointed, and exceedingly difficult arrangements that would define Monk as a premier composer/arranger/bandleader. This is in contrast to Monk the keyboard player and band member, which he skilfully demonstrates throughout the track as well as the rest of the album. The song's opening jam features a tasty tug of war between Rouse's animated lead and Monk's interjections and piano antics. Jones' cornet is incorporated tastefully throughout Monk's tricky arrangements. The stark contrast in performance timbre between the comparatively subdued Rouse or Monk and the frenetic bleating of Jones is notably disconcerting. [Some reissues includes two alternate takes of "Played Twice," the other Monk composition to be debuted on 5 by Monk by 5.]

El quinteto presentado en 5 by Monk by 5 incluye a Monk (piano), Thad Jones (corneta), Charlie Rouse (saxo tenor), Sam Jones (bajo) y Art Taylor (batería).

Jackie McLean • Jackie's Bag

Review
by Steve Huey
Jackie's Bag is split between two different recording sessions: the first, from January 1959, was the first session Jackie McLean ever led for Blue Note, and the second was a sextet date from September 1960 that featured tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks as a co-leader in all but name. According to the liner notes, McLean's first date produced only three songs of releasable quality, which are included here. Six tunes were cut at the Brooks session, which were all issued in Japan as Street Singer, and half appeared on the original Jackie's Bag LP. Given the transitional time period of the first and Brooks' musical taste on the second, the music on Jackie's Bag finds McLean in a staunchly hard bop mode, with occasional hints of adventurousness. While McLean's debut performances are certainly well done, the most distinctive appeal of the album lies in the Brooks collaborations. There are exotic flavors to McLean's terrific "Appointment in Ghana" and Brooks' "Isle of Java"; of the newly added bonus tracks, Brooks' "Medina" has a particularly complex and memorable theme, and his "Street Singer" was actually issued on his own Back to the Tracks album as well. Despite crucial contributions from trumpeter Blue Mitchell and drummer Art Taylor, the real focal point of these performances is the complementary interplay between McLean and Brooks, the latter of whom does a nice job of matching the former's legendarily hard-edged tone. McLean devotees will want this anyway, but the quality of the Street Singer material pushes Jackie's Bag far beyond a simple gap-plugging historical release.

Red Garland • Red Garland Revisited

Review from AllMusic (by Scott Yanow):
For pianist Red Garland's fourth recording as a leader, he's teamed up with bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Art Taylor, and (on "Four" and "Walkin'") guest guitarist Kenny Burrell. Garland plays in his distinctive style consistently throughout Red Garland Revisited!. Highlights include "Billy Boy" (which was adapted from Ahmad Jamal's rendition), "I'm Afraid the Masquerade Is Over," "It Could Happen to You," and two Burrell tracks. Predictably excellent music; Garland recorded more than 20 additional albums within the next five years.

Lee Morgan • Candy

Review from AllMusic (by Stacia Proefrock) - 4 Stars:
His prodigal technical virtuosity had already been proven at this time in the Dizzy Gilliespie band, but Morgan's first solo ventures had been remarkable only because of his young age. Here, the influence of some of Morgan's mentors can be seen, but instead of just emulating the style of older trumpeters like Clifford Brown, he has begun absorbing bits and pieces of the phrasing and style of a wide range of musicians, from Gillespie to Miles Davis, then using them to forge his own sound. Morgan places himself front and center here -- there are no other horns to carry the melodic lines, leaving him quite exposed, but he manages to perform beautifully. Not merely a technical marvel, his tone on this album was sweet and his playing fluid, infused with joy and crisply articulated emotion. Morgan would later turn out to be an expert songwriter, but here songs like Buddy Johnson's "Since I Fell for You," and Jimmy Heath's "C.T.A." gave him ample space to show off his talents.

Hank Mobley • Curtain Call

Review by Lee Bloom
Today we can only speculate as to why so many Blue Note sessions were not originally issued. Blue Note founder/producer Alfred Lion, known to be punctilious in upholding a very high standard for his product, sometimes felt that a particular session was not worthy of public release. While neither the playing nor writing is quite at the level of Mobley's 1960 critically acclaimed Soul Station (Blue Note 4031), "Curtain Call" is nevertheless a fine effort; yet it was only made available in 1984 by Toshiba EMI in Japan. Kenny Dorham, who like Mobley had worked in Max Roach's group, is featured on trumpet. (Dorham and Mobley had also recorded together on an earlier Mobley session for the Prestige label.) Highlights include the ballad "Deep in a Dream," which was to be re-recorded four years later with Ike Quebec for inclusion on Sonny Clark's great Leapin' and Lopin' LP. Hank's originals "Curtain Call" and "The Mobe" are sprightly and likable bop lines. Despite an occasional tendency for Mobley's relaxed articulation to sound a bit languorous, his playing is generally enjoyable, and his writing exhibits character, maturity, and a uniquely rhythmic approach to crafting memorable melodies.

Lee Morgan • Complete Introduction Sessions

Being shot dead by a jealous lover at Slug's nightclub in 1972, meant that the hard-bop and soul-jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan ran into a catastrophe tailor-made for ascent to jazz-legend status, and his skills were such that speculation about what he might have achieved still goes on today. Morgan's hard, attacking sound and boldness of conception matched a thoughtful lyricism and warmth of tone when the right slow-burner came along, and with commercial funk hits like 1963's dancefloor anthem The Sidewinder (a big acid-jazz success with DJs 25 years later) he also proved he had a Herbie Hancock-like intuition for a groove.
Sounding superficially like a rough-hewn affair, this early Morgan set is perhaps for harder-core jazzers - although everything about it is urgently melodic, and the trumpeter's enthusiasm for pushing the regular bop envelope is infectious.
Taking place over a decade later than the famous Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie bop-breakthrough recordings, the set nonetheless exudes a similar sensation, of music that can't wait to be made. A superb hard-bop lineup including Hank Jones on piano and Hank Mobley on tenor sax rattles through a selection of mostly home-grown pieces (though interestingly, none of them are Morgan's), and the rounded tone and poised phrasing of the hugely underrated Mobley is an ideal foil for Morgan's scything runs, explosive crescendos and engaging bebop bluster. Perhaps it's for the enthusiasts, but it's one of those rare studio discs that's almost like having the band in your room.

///////

Curtis Fuller • Bone & Bari

Review
by Lee Bloom
Curtis Fuller emerged during the 1950s as a leading hard bop trombonist. A native of Detroit, Fuller was initially inspired by hearing J.J. Johnson, who became a mentor for the young musician. This recording was completed only weeks before Fuller went into the studio to record John Coltrane's Blue Trane. The session is unique in its pairing of trombone with the baritone sax of Tate Houston. The resultant front line sound is thick and rotund. The rhythm section of Sonny Clark, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor had a lovely rapport; individually and collectively, these three made many important recordings in the late 1950s, especially for the Blue Note label. Highlights of Bone & Bari include the title tune, penned by Fuller, and the group's rendering of the standard "Heart and Soul."

Biography
by Ron Wynn
Curtis Fuller belonged in the select circle with J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, and a few others who make the trombone sound fluid and inviting rather than awkward. His ability to make wide-octave leaps and play whiplash phrases in a relaxed, casual manner was a testament to his skill. Fuller's solos and phrases were often ambitious and creative, and he worked in several fine bands and participated in numerous great sessions.

Fuller studied music in high school, then began developing his skills in an Army band, where he played with Cannonball Adderley. He worked in Detroit with Kenny Burrell and Yusef Lateef, then moved to New York. Fuller made his recording debut as a leader on Transition in 1955, and recorded in the late '50s for Blue Note, Prestige, United Artists, and Savoy. He was a charter member of the Jazztet with Benny Golson and Art Farmer in 1959, then played in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1961 to 1965. There were additional recording dates for Warwick, Smash/Trip, Epic, and Impulse! in the '60s. Fuller toured Europe with Dizzy Gillespie's big band in 1968, then did several sessions in New York.

During the '70s, he experimented for a time playing hard bop arrangements in a band featuring electronic instruments, heading a group with guitarist Bill Washer and Stanley Clarke. He concluded that phase with the 1973 album Crankin'. Fuller toured with the Count Basie band from 1975 to 1977, and did dates for Mainstream, Timeless, and Bee Hive. He co-led the quintet Giant Bones with Winding in 1979 and 1980, and played with Art Blakey, Cedar Walton, and Benny Golson in the late '70s and early '80s. During the '80s, Fuller toured Europe regularly with the Timeless All-Stars, and performed and recorded with the revamped Jazztet in addition to leading a fine session for Savoy in 1993.

Fuller continued playing dates and working in the decades that followed, recording albums for labels like Delmark, Capri, and Savant. He retired from playing in the early 2010s; his final studio album was 2012's Down Home. The legendary trombonist died on May 8, 2021, at the age of 88.

Charlie Rouse • Takin' Care Of Business

Biography
by Scott Yanow
Possessor of a distinctive tone and a fluid bop-oriented style, Charlie Rouse was in Thelonious Monk's Quartet for over a decade (1959-1970) and, although somewhat taken for granted, was an important ingredient in Monk's music. Rouse was always a modern player and he worked with Billy Eckstine's orchestra (1944) and the first Dizzy Gillespie big band (1945), making his recording debut with Tadd Dameron in 1947. Rouse popped up in a lot of important groups including Duke Ellington's Orchestra (1949-1950), Count Basie's octet (1950), on sessions with Clifford Brown in 1953, and with Oscar Pettiford's sextet (1955). He co-led the Jazz Modes with Julius Watkins (1956-1959), and then joined Monk for a decade of extensive touring and recordings. In the 1970s he recorded a few albums as a leader, and in 1979 he became a member of Sphere. Charlie Rouse's unique sound began to finally get some recognition during the 1980s. He participated on Carmen McRae's classic Carmen Sings Monk album and his last recording was at a Monk tribute concert.

Paul Chambers • Bass on Top

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Bass on Top is another thoroughly engaging set of straight-ahead, mainstream jazz from Paul Chambers. The bassist leads a quartet comprised of guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Hank Jones, and drummer Art Taylor through a selection of standards, including "Yesterdays," "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," and "Dear Old Stockholm," as well as a handful of contemporary jazz numbers and originals. There's a relaxed, friendly atmosphere to the music, both in its tone and in the fact that Chambers lets Jones and Burrell have some time in the spotlight. The result is a warm, entertaining collection of mainstream jazz that nevertheless rewards close listening.

Dizzy Reece Quintet • From in to out

Alphonso Son "Dizzy" Reece is a hard bop jazz trumpeter with a distinctive sound and compositional style.
Reece was born January 5, 1931 in Kingston, Jamaica, the son of a silent film pianist. He attended the Alpha Boys School (famed in Jamaica for its musical alumni), switching from baritone to trumpet at 14. A full-time musician from age 16, he moved to London in 1948 and spent the 1950s working in Europe, much of that time in Paris. He played with Don Byas, Kenny Clarke, Frank Foster and Thad Jones, among others. Winning praise from the likes of Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, he emigrated to New York City in 1959, but found New York in the 1960s a struggle. Too little heard-from in the intervening years, he had a reissue on Mosaic in 2004 that gave fans hope of a comeback. https://www.allaboutjazz.com/musicians/dizzy-reece/

Biography by Scott Yanow
Dizzy Reece is a fine hard bop trumpeter who has been overshadowed by the innovators of the style. He started on trumpet when he was 14 and moved to Europe in 1949. It was while he was based in England (1954-1959) that he achieved some recognition through a series of recordings with top English musicians, plus a 1958 date with Donald Byrd. He moved to New York in 1959 but, after a few notable recordings and a bit of publicity, Reece seemed to largely fade away despite remaining active. He was with the Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra in 1968 and the Paris Reunion Band in 1985. https://www.allmusic.com/artist/dizzy-reece-mn0000161947#biography

Dizzy Reece Quintet • From in to out

Review by Sean Westergaard
From in to Out is a live set from what was probably a one-off group of Dizzy Reece on trumpet, John Gilmore (doing a bit of freelancing on an Arkestra tour of Europe) on tenor, Siegfried Kessler on piano, and a rhythm section of Patrice Caratini on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Side one has a very Coltrane-esque feel, thanks mostly to Kessler's McCoy Tyner-isms and the driving rhythms of Art Taylor. Presumably without much rehearsal time, they basically set up a groove and blow. Reece solos first, followed by Gilmore and Kessler, before moving into a brief unaccompanied bass solo. Side two has the band shifting into an odd-meter groove, strongly reminiscent of "Dancing Girls" from Pete La Roca's Turkish Women at the Bath (another rare foray outside the Arkestra for Gilmore). About halfway through the second side, the band heads back to Trane territory to close out the set. Overall, this is an excellent, well-recorded set, even if it's nothing groundbreaking or earth-shattering. Highlights are the great drumming of Art Taylor and another fairly rare chance to hear John Gilmore operating outside of Sun Ra's music.
