Bunky Green • Testifyin' Time
Review by Jason Ankeny
As its title suggests, Testifyin' Time channels elements of gospel but otherwise eschews tradition and cliché, bolstering its modern jazz sensibilities with nods to the emerging Chicago soul sound. Backed by tenorist James Meyer, trumpeter Walter Strickland, bassist Cleveland Eaton, and drummer Marshall Thompson, Bunky Green flourishes in the session's hip, contemporary mode, uncorking a series of nimble alto solos galvanized by a communal joie de vivre that elevates the entire session beyond the norm. And like most of Green's Argo sessions, Testifyin' Time boasts a thoughtful song selection as well, with material spanning from the perennial "On Green Dolphin Street" to the Gershwin/Weil collaboration "My Ship."

Bunky Green • Playin' For Keeps
by Jason Ankeny
Playin' for Keeps draws on inspirations spanning from Tin Pan Alley to bossa nova to the British Invasion to forge a soul-jazz groove with its own distinct sensibility. Though rooted in bop, Bunky Green embraces both pop and avant-garde idioms as well, channeling his myriad influences to create a soulful and lithe sound with an impressive command of space and time. Bassist Cleveland Eaton, pianist Willie Pickens, and drummer Harold Jones are all in fine form throughout, clearly relishing the indelible melodies of selections like "The Shadow of Your Smile" and "Yesterday." Green's edgy, forceful alto is nevertheless the focal point, navigating the material with skill and finesse.

Biography
by Scott Yanow
Bunky Green has long had his own sound, but unfortunately most of his recordings have gone long out of print as he has conducted a career as an educator (including a term as the president of the International Association of Jazz Educators). After playing locally, in 1960 he had a stint with Charles Mingus. That year, Green moved to Chicago where he played with Ira Sullivan, Andrew Hill, Louie Bellson, Yusef Lateef, and Sonny Stitt, among others. Originally strongly influenced by Charlie Parker, Green spent a period reassessing his style and studying, emerging with a much more distinctive sound. He recorded for Exodus (1960) and Argo (1964-1966), but his best work was his mid- to late-'70s recordings for Vanguard and a 1989 session for Delos. A self-described "inside/outside" player, Bunky Green has had an influence on the styles of Steve Coleman and Greg Osby.

Elvin Jones • Time Capsule
A real standout in the 70s catalog of Elvin Jones – for a number of key reasons! First up, the set's got more of an electric vibe than usual – thanks to Fender Rhodes from Kenny Barron and guitar from Ryo Kawasaki, who really help shape the sound of the set!
Second, production is by Ed Bland – who does a masterful job of blending soul, spirit, and harder-edged jazz modes – on tunes that often have a nice modal vibe at the core! The group also features excellent alto work from Bunky Green – who really sparkles strongly throughout, and who also wrote more than half the material on the album.

Review by Scott Yanow
Drummer Elvin Jones' Vanguard recordings of 1975-77, of which this was the final one, generally found him playing with all-stars or augmenting his band with guests. The five obscurities on this LP (three by altoist Bunky Green, who emerges as the date's top soloist) matches Jones with Green, tenor saxophonist George Coleman, the electric piano of Kenny Barron, bassist Junie Booth, guitarist Ryo Kawasaki, and percussionist Angel Allende. Two of the songs ("Frost Bite" and "Digital Display") have bassist Milt Hinton and flutist Frank Wess; the latter piece also adds the soprano of Frank Foster. Overall, the music is worthwhile, although not quite adding up to the sum of its many parts; the set has very little unity despite some individual fireworks.
