The Rosenberg Trio • Live in Samois (Tribute to DR)
A Stellar Performance

On the 'Live in Samois' recording, The Rosenberg Trio once again proves their pre-eminence as the world's greatest gypsy swing guitar ensemble. From the opening bars of the standard "Rose Room", the group establishes a comfort zone by presenting this standard with all its melodic beauty. But then some forty seconds later something remarkable happens. Lead guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg begins to take this old reliable jazz number off the ground and it never again lands until the final chords fade away. This first tune is only a hint of what is to follow. With varying degrees of speed, nuance, playfulness and poignancy Rosenberg, his brother Nonnie (bass) and his cousin Nous'che (rhythm guitar) simply dazzle. Lead lines of a complexity and speed that would take other gifted guitarists a week to master erupt out of Stochelo only to be followed by others even more sensitive or intricate. Behind these brilliant lead treatments the sixteen tunes come to life and their pulse is provided by a flawless rhythm section--Nous'che plays harder and faster than any other rhythm player you'll find out there today and Nonnie's remarkably nimble backbeat on upright bass at times matches his brother's soloing note-for-note. As an introduction to the Rosenberg Trio, this CD is unsurpassed (its resultant DVD allows many amazed listeners the chance to see that there is actually only one bass and only two guitars playing--because it always sounds like more). However, this CD is not for the faint of ear: there is more music played in this hour than many other artists play in a year.
'Live in Samois' is a tasteful and wonderous concert for fans of the Django Reinhardt--Hot Club of France style of jazz. The late master himself would love the treatment given to seven of his own tunes. Highly recommended, if at least only as an example of how a guitar can be shown off as an instrument equal to any other in the world.
After the final strains of the encore number "It Don't Mean a Thing" pass into memory, one is reminded that Stochelo Rosenberg at the time of this recording was only 35 years old, and a brighter future for a musician is rarely so evident. He is undoubtedly one of the finest guitarists in the world, and arguably may already be the best. You decide. Pick any of the tunes from this CD and it will become obvious. And if you're already a guitarist, I defy you to keep your hands and feet still. Enjoy!

Roby Lakatos • Gypsy violin virtuoso
Roby Lakatos es un violinista Romaní (etnia gitana) de Hungría. Es famoso por su mezcla de música clásica con la música gitana y húngara y temas de jazz.
Roby Lakatos no sólo es un virtuoso abrasador, sino un músico de una versatilidad estilística extraordinaria. Romani violinist Roby Lakatos is not only a scorching virtuoso, but a musician of extraordinary stylistic versatility.[citation needed] Equally comfortable performing classical music as he is playing jazz and his own Hungarian folk idiom, Lakatos is the rare musician who defies definition. He is referred to as a gypsy violinist or ‘devil’s fiddler’, a classical virtuoso, a jazz improviser, a composer and arranger, and a 19th-century throwback, and he is actually all of these things at once. He is the kind of universal musician so rarely encountered in our time—a player whose strength as an interpreter derives from his activities as an improviser and composer. He has performed in the great halls and festivals of Europe, Asia and America.
Born in 1965 into the legendary family of Romani violinists descended from János Bihari, ‘King of Gypsy Violinists’, Roby Lakatos was introduced to music as a child and at the age of nine he made his public debut as first violin in a Romani band. When Roby Lakatos mixes so-called ‘classical music’ with the magic of Hungarian-gypsy vitality, it is not disrespectful toward the classical tradition, but it reflects the deep tradition rooted in the cultural heritage of the Romani people and offers new, refreshing pleasures to the listener and music lover. And just as Liszt, Brahms and others used Hungarian overtones in their compositions, so now the public profits from the reuniting of these classics with their Romani roots. This enlivens all those men and women in whose veins still pulses at least a little bit of the blood of the wandering spirit.

Rhythm Future Quartet • Rhythm Future Quartet and Friends
The acoustic jazz ensemble, Rhythm Future Quartet has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome, named for a Django Reinhardt tune, offers up a newly minted sound, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France, yet wholly contemporary. Led by violinist Jason Anick and guitarist Olli Soikkeli, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. With Max O’Rourke on second guitar and Greg Loughman on bass, Rhythm Future is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of a vital musical genre.
The Fall of 2018 marked the release of their newest album, “Rhythm Future Quartet and Friends”, which features the critically acclaimed singer Cyrille Aimée, brazil’s top bandolimist Hamilton de Holanda, and guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg. After relocating from Scandinavia Olli Soikkeli quickly became a top call guitarist in the bustling Brooklyn jazz scene. Diango Reinhardt • Souvenirs

Django Reinhardt has astounded and thrilled numerous generations of
guitar players and jazz lovers with his amazing command of the guitar.
January 24th, 1910 at Liberchies Belgium, Django was born into the open
air, rambling lifestyle of his gypsy parents. At the age of eight, his
mother's tribe settled near the belt of fortifications that surrounded
the old Paris, near the Choisy gate. He never wore a suit or lived in a
real house until he was twenty years old. These French Gypsies or
Manouches were a world unto themselves, medieval in their beliefs, and
distrustful of modern science. Django grew up in this world of
contradictions, one foot in the bustling big city of Paris and the other
in the age-old life of the nomadic gypsy. Though born into poverty
Django had the soul of a nobleman and this natural elegance of bearing
and attitude expressed itself in his music.
It was at an early age Django became attracted to music. When twelve
years old he received his first instrument, a banjo/guitar that was
given to him by a neighbor who had noticed his keen interest in music.
He quickly learned to play, mimicking the fingerings of musicians he
watched. He was soon astounding adults with his ability on the guitar,
and before he was thirteen he began his musical career playing with
popular accordionist Guerino at a dance hall on the Rue Monge. He went
on to play with numerous other bands and musicians and made his first
recordings with accordionist Jean Vaissade for the Ideal Company. Since
Django could not read or write at the time "Jiango Renard" was how his
name appeared on these records.
On November 2nd, 1928 an event took place that would forever change
Django's life. At one o'clock in the morning the 18 year old Django
returned from a night of playing music at a new club "La Java" to the
caravan that was now the home of himself and his new wife. The caravan
was filled with celluloid flowers his wife had made to sell at the
market on the following day. Django upon hearing what he thought was a
mouse among the flowers bent down with a candle to look. The wick from
the candle fell into the highly flammable celluloid flowers and the
caravan was almost instantly transformed into a raging inferno. Django
wrapped himself in a blanket to shield him from the flames. Somehow he
and his wife made it across the blazing room to safety outside, but his
left hand, and his right side from knee to waist were badly burned.
Initially doctors wanted to amputate his leg but Django refused. He was
moved to a nursing home where the care was so good his leg was saved.
Django was bedridden for eighteen months. During this time he was given a
guitar, and with great determination Django created a whole new
fingering system built around the two fingers on his left hand that had
full mobility. His fourth and fifth digits of the left hand were
permanently curled towards the palm due to the tendons shrinking from
the heat of the fire. He could use them on the first two strings of the
guitar for chords and octaves but complete extension of these fingers
was impossible. His soloing was all done with the index and middle
fingers! Film clips of Django show his technique to be graceful and
precise, almost defying belief.
Django was influenced by jazz recordings of Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti,
Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. This new music found a place deep in
Django's heart. It provided the perfect vehicle for his prodigious
talent for improvisation. Django rarely if ever played a solo the same
way twice. Numerous recordings prove this to be true. His creative
genius was not only that of the master improviser, but also that of the
composer, and he can be credited with numerous pieces with beautiful
melodies and sophisticated, subtle harmonic structures. However, Django
could not read or write musical notation and he was at the mercy of
others that could to get his ideas down on paper.
1934 proved to be the most important year of his life. The Quintet of
the Hot Club of France was born! As the fates would have it, the Quintet
was formed by a chance meeting of Django and Stéphane Grappelli. A band
of fourteen musicians including Django, Stéphane, Roger Chaput, and
Louis Vola were commissioned to play at the Hotel Cambridge at teatime.
During intermission Django would find a corner backstage and play his
guitar. One day Stéphane joined in and both were so pleased with the
exchange they went on to play together more and more frequently joined
by Roger Chaput (guitar), Louis Vola (bass), and eventually Django's
brother Joseph (guitar). A small record company Ultraphone recorded
their first sides Dinah, Tiger Rag, Oh Lady be Good, and I Saw Stars.
These first records caused a sensation! The Quintet went on to record
hundreds of sides and had a following on both sides of the ocean.
1939 found the Quintet touring in England when the war broke out. Django
returned to Paris while Stéphane remained in England. Django played and
recorded throughout the war years substituting Hubert Rostaing's
clarinet for Stephen's violin. He somehow avoided the fate of many of

After the war he was rejoined by Stéphane and they again played and
recorded. He toured briefly with Duke Ellington in America and returned
to Paris where he continued his career until 1951 when he retired to the
small village of Samois sur Seine.
On May 16th 1953 Django suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and died,
leaving behind his wife Sophie and son Babik. His music remains as vital
and exciting today as it was when he lived, a legacy of joy to all
future generations that rediscover the genius of the Belgian gypsy
Django Reinhardt.

Biography
Stephane Grappelli (originally surname was spelled with a 'Y') would
have earned himself a place in Jazz History books if only for his
important role in the Quintette of the Hot Club of France, featuring the
dazzling virtuosity of Django Reindhart. Grappelli's violin was the
perfect foil to Reindhart's guitar in this piano-less group.
Fired by Reindhart's tremendous rhythmic powers, Grappelli's
contributions to recordings by the Quintette like Lime House Blues,
China Boy and It Don't Mean A Thing (all 1935) and Them There Eyes,
Three little Words and Swing '39 (these latter three tracks from
1938-39) were admirable in their execution.
Occasionally Grappelli would play piano, as when harmonica virtuoso
Larry Adler recorded with the group in 1939, the year when Reindhart and
Grappelli, violin, recorded (with delightful results) as a duo (all
Django Reindhart).
Grappelli born (1908) and raised in Paris was involved with music at a
very early age. By 12 years, he had acquired his first violin- just one
of several instruments he learned to play. He began professionally with
theatre bands, eventually being introduced to jazz music. A French jazz
musician, Philippe Brun, introduced Grappelli to Reindhart. Soon after
that meeting they put the idea of Quintette into practice.
When World War II commenced, Grappelli and the band were touring
Britain. While the others returned to Paris Grappelli decided to stay.
During the next six years he became a popular figure in London with
habitues of nightlife in general and in musical entertainment in
particular, working with local musicians in the local clubs. In 1946, he
returned to Paris, renewed association with Reindhart, but he magic of
pre-war days did not re-appear too often. Between 1948-55 worked in Club
Saint Germain, Paris, and in the latter year played nine-month
residency in St. Tropez.
During the '70s Grappelli has played throughout Europe, in Clubs,
concerts and festivals, has and broadcast televised extensively, and has
been a regular visitor to the recording studio.
In 1966, Grappelli was recorded in concert in Switzerland, together with
fellow jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, Stuff Smith and Svend Asmussen
(Violin Summit). Since then he has recorded frequently in London. A live
date at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Stephane Grappelli 1972) finds him
responding to an enthusiastic audience. Elsewhere he has recorded with
much success, with Americans Gary Burton (Paris Encounter), Bill Coleman
(Stephane Grappelli-Bill Coleman), Roland Hanna, (Stephane Grappelli
Meets he Rhythm Section) and Barney Kessel (I Remember Django).

Swing Acoustique • Si Tu Savais
Juin 2012, je traine sur le camping de Samoreau et je suis attiré par
une superbe mélodie interprétée par des musiciens danois ; dans un
anglais approximatif, j’engage la conversation avec Peter Zeuthen,
auteur de ce très beau Mathilde et leader du groupe Swing Acoustique ;
juin 2013, le groupe stationne au même endroit, et Peter me donne leur
premier disque, un LP 30 cm incluant ce Mathilde qui avait attiré mon
attention.
Outre Peter Zeuthen, guitare solo, le groupe se compose de Robert
Pilgaard, guitare, Mathias Wedeken, contrebasse et Bjarke Falgren,
violon sur quelques titres, des musiciens qui font bien ce qu’ils ont à
faire. Bonne idée que ce retour au format vinyle : une jolie pochette et
une durée raisonnable (35 à 40 minutes) ; souvent trop longue, la durée
d’un CD occasionne parfois quelque remplissage et l’on a souvent du
mal, sauf exception, à aller au bout. Autodidacte talentueux, Peter
Zeuthen ne prétend pas rivaliser avec les cadors de la 6 cordes ; se
situant plus du côté de l’esthétique d’un Henri Crolla ou d’un Francis
Alfred Moerman, il joue à son niveau, son phrasé précis privilégiant la
sculpture de la note, la clarté et la respiration, le sentiment et la
poésie ; une musique intimiste qui prend son temps à l’image de ce
Flaneur, jolie composition du guitariste qui en signe 4 ou 5 autres
d’une grande fraicheur d’inspiration, déclinant un art de la mélodie
tranquille et chantante (cf la mouette qui, après l’exposé, s’infléchit
en swing décontracté, et bien sûr ce superbe Mathilde, petit bijou qui
avait su me séduire et que je retrouve avec plaisir). Le groupe est
aussi convaincant sur tempo plus élevé (cf Zeuthen swing), swinguant en
douceur sans jamais forcer. Pour le reste, Minor swing, Maman la plus
belle du monde et une belle version de Si tu savais, du moitié danois
Georges Ulmer.
Voilà un disque sans prétention qui démontre que l’on peut jouer de la belle musique sans être forcément un virtuose.

This is an unpretentious record that shows that you can play beautiful music without necessarily being a virtuoso.

Josef Wawau Adler (born 25 January 1967, in Karlsruhe) is a German gypsy jazz guitarist. Born into a family of Sinti gypsies, he is heavily influenced by Django Reinhardt, but also Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, Pat Martino and George Benson. He formed a trio with Holzmanno Winterstein and Axel Miller, and has also played with Andreas Öberg and Joel Locher, the bassist who he released Here’s to Django with in 2010, and many others.

The Lost Fingers • Lost In The 80's
Lost in the 80s is the first studio album by Canadian gypsy jazz band the Lost Fingers, released in Quebec on 6 May 2008 and in the remainder of Canada on 27 January 2009. The album consists entirely of the band's renditions of selected popular songs from the 1980s. English lyrics are performed through all tracks on the album except for "Incognito", a French-language song initially performed by Celine Dion.
