Gary Chandler • Outlook

 

Gary Chandler (born in 1938) started playing professionally in 1960 in the thriving Columbus Ohio club scene with Hank Marr, Don Patterson and Benny Maupin. He worked in the Motown Revue from 1965-67 and led his own group for over a year. Over the following years Chandler joined the bands of Lou Donaldson & Charles Earland where he remained until the recording of his debut album.

A review of the organist's debut album on Savant

Hammond B-3 vet Caesar Frazier and company offer listeners drawn to vintage jazz organ abundant relief with this album, clearly inspired by the keyboardist’s organ-combo influences. Suffice to say, fans of Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack McDuff, Shirley Scott, and Don Patterson, to say nothing of guitarists Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, and George Benson, have reason to cheer.

Though Closer to the Truth marks Frazier’s label debut on Savant, his list of credits, including a pivotal association with saxophonist Lou Donaldson, is as impressive as it is long. Unsurprisingly, the 11 performances here are stamped by Frazier’s authority and soulful, none more so than the Benny Golson standard “Blues March,” cast as a hypnotic funk interlude streaming with evocative solos by the bandleader, tenor saxophonist Lyle Link, and guitarist Jacques Lesure. Selecting album highlights is tricky, though, since repeat spins of Nat Adderley’s “Jive Samba,” George Shearing’s “Lullaby of Birdland,” and Frazier’s own “Codes” reveal new virtues and nuances.

While there’s a lot to be said for Frazier’s slow-burn finesse—check out the album’s lovely, brush-stroked coda “That’s All”—the keyboardist also swings with consummate ease, adroitly aided by drummer Leon Joyce, Jr. Uncluttered and unfussy, the arrangements are another big plus: roomy enough to showcase each member of the group without resorting to routine exchanges.

Hailing from Indianapolis, Ceasar Frazier was a funky soul-jazz organist who recorded several albums for the Eastbound/Westbound label family during the '70s. First making his mark in 1972 with one of saxman Lou Donaldson's funkier bands, Frazier cut his first album Hail Ceasar! later that year, which featured musicians commonly associated with the Prestige label's jazz-funk outings -- Melvin Sparks (guitar), Houston Person (tenor), and Idris Muhammad (drums). The follow-up, Ceasar Frazier '75, featured the likes of guitarist Cornell Dupree and drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie; the album's key track, "Funk It Down," was later sampled by jazz-obsessed hip-hoppers Gang Starr for their "Ex-Girl to the Next Girl." In 1978, Frazier resurfaced as a smooth soul/disco vocalist with the LP Another Life, and while he showed some affinity for the idiom, it failed to reinvent him as a commercial force outside the jazz-funk marketplace. In addition to recording on his own, Frazier also played keyboards in Marvin Gaye's backing band. Thanks to the rare-groove revival, his rare original LPs now fetch generous sums on the collectors' market.
