El
cuatro portorriqueño , simplemente conocido como cuatro es el
instrumento insignia de la música tradicional puertorriqueña. De 5
cuerdas metálicas dobles, es algo más pequeño que la guitarra y posee un
contorno similar al del violín. Las terceras, cuarta y quinta cuerdas
graves son entorchadas, mientras las restantes son simples de acero.
Se
afina en intervalos de cuartas en sol4, re4, la3, mi3, si2 (de agudos a
graves). Los dos órdenes superiores están octavados, o sea, dan la
misma nota con una octava de diferencia. Es esta la razón de su sonido
tan característico, parecido al del tres cubano.

Puerto Rican cuatro, simply known as the cuatro, is the flagship
instrument of traditional Puerto Rican music. With 5 double metallic
strings, it is somewhat smaller than the guitar and has a contour
similar to that of the violin. The third, fourth and fifth bass strings
are twisted, while the remaining strings are simple steel strings.
It
is tuned in intervals of fourths in G4, D4, A3, E3, B2 (from treble to
bass). The two higher orders are octaved, that is, they give the same
note with an octave difference. This is the reason for its
characteristic sound, similar to that of the Cuban tres.
