Delightful easy-jazz album with great horn arrangements played and
composed by Oscar Rocchi (Piano) and Giancarlo Barigozzi (flute and
saxophone).
Originally released in 1972 as FLP 102 on FONOVIDEO label
Kicking
around for fifteen years in the inter-continental Soul Jazz scene,
Portuguese based outfit The Bahama Soul Club treats the audience to
purest sunshine on their new album "Sundub Society"! This is the group's
sixth studio LP, which finds its spirit on the coasts of the Algarve,
where it was recorded.
A commitment to a colourful community and
inspired by the blissful energies of the sun drenched coast and the
multicultural verve of tattooed wave riders, spiritual seekers, rainbow
healers, mystic maidens and dreadlocked beauties, .... and of course the
funky smell of sandy flip flops.
Lush arrangements painted with
sun-soaked brushes, captivating hangout vibes, shuffling bits of Reggae,
woven threads of 70s roots, traditional rhythms and beats and sounds of
the South Western Algarve.
Sincere, artistic, full of spirit and
definitely unique. No striving for the worldly charts. An album recorded
mainly with the local legends, stoned troubadoures, poetic pirates and
tough rebels.
The songs were born from a vague idea after the release
of "Bohemia After Dawn", the last album on which a few artist friends
from the Algarve had already contributed.
There is always a special
magic in the neighborhood when sunny midday jams morph to sundown
sessions to party-till-dawn skanks. We then just put those jams on tape.
So, ten sundubby love songs to 'Oh, those sandy beaches!' The SUNDUB
SOCIETY, my lovely family at the End Of The World: Josephine
Nightingale, Tiago Saga, Ally Garrido, Naomi Falcon, Cutty Wren, Hedvig
Larsson, Chicks On Beer, etc. …

Pateando
Falcon, Cutty Wren, Hedvig Larsson, Chicks On Beer, etc. …

Extending their kitschy Ultra-Lounge series to its logical conclusion, Capitol Records prepared its own variation of Rhino's Golden Throats discs with the two volumes of On the Rocks. The idea is to gather a number of '60s rock & roll staples -- "Light My Fire," "Mellow Yellow," "A Hard Day's Night," etc. -- as they were covered by mainstream pop and easy listening acts, from Mel Torme, Martin Denny, and Julie London to the Lettermen, Buddy Morrow, and Zacharias. In short, it's supposed to be a laugh riot, since these artists are so, you know, square. However, the concept reads better than it plays -- ten tracks of this stuff is entertaining, 22 winds up being an endurance test. A handful of cuts are quite funny -- after all, it's hard not to be amused at London's "Mighty Quinn (Quinn the Eskimo)," Wayne Newton's "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)," and the Lettermen's unbelievable Doors medley, "Hello, I Love You/Touch Me" -- and the song selection on whole is more entertaining than Pt. 2, yet On the Rocks remains a disc that can only be enjoyed in moderation.

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Evidently, the compilers of Ultra-Lounge: On the Rocks ran out of good material on the first volume of their two-part series, since the songs on Pt. 2 aren't as consistently entertaining as those on the first. Granted, campily comic covers of pop classics by mainstream vocalists is a limited genre, but it's surprising that only a handful of these 22 tracks are entertaining. Again, Julie London's contribution, "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy," is quite funny, simply because the song and the vocalist are so completely mismatched, but it is one of the only standouts on an album weighed down by a preponderance of mediocre instrumentals.
