This year has seen Alex busy writing and producing the highly successful Ghetto Latin & Broken Ballroom with vocalist Rayna MC, whilst Elliot has been in the studio forging a new album for one of their other pseudonyms Ikon, destined for release next year.

Pioneers of the London acid jazz scene, the Brand New Heavies translated their love for the funk grooves of the 1970s into a sophisticated sound that carried the torch for classic soul in an era dominated by hip-hop. Formed in 1985 by drummer/keyboardist Jan Kincaid, guitarist Simon Bartholomew, and bassist/keyboardist Andrew Levy -- longtime school friends from the London suburb of Ealing -- the Brand New Heavies were originally an instrumental unit inspired by the James Brown and Meters records its members heard while clubbing the rare groove scene in vogue at the moment. The trio soon began recording their own music, gaining enormous exposure when their demo tracks were spun at the influential Cat in the Hat Club.

Eventually adding a brass section, the Brand New Heavies built a cult following throughout the London club circuit, surviving the shift that saw the rare groove scene fade in the wake of acid house. After an earlier recording deal with Cooltempo yielded the single "Got to Give," the Heavies -- now including vocalist Jay Ella Ruth -- signed with the fledgling indie label Acid Jazz; recorded on a budget of just 8,000 pounds, the group's self-titled LP appeared in 1990 to strong critical acclaim, resulting in a licensing deal with the American company Delicious Vinyl. With Ruth now out of the band, Delicious Vinyl hand-picked N'dea Davenport as her successor, insisting the Heavies re-record tracks from their debut for their first U.S. effort, also an eponymous release that appeared in 1992.

After scoring at home with "Dream Come True" and "Stay This Way," the single "Never Stop" soon landed on the American R&B charts, with the Heavies the first British group to accomplish such a feat with a debut single since Soul II Soul several years earlier; a subsequent New York performance augmented by rappers Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) and MC Serch (3rd Bass) inspired the group to begin absorbing hip-hop, and that summer they cut Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1, an album including guest appearances by rappers including Main Source, Gang Starr, Grand Puba, and the Pharcyde. Released in 1994, Brother Sister, which went platinum in Britain, was Davenport's last recording with the Heavies before beginning a solo career; she was replaced by singer Siedah Garrett in time for 1997's Shelter. Two years later, the group reappeared with a British best-of album entitled Trunk Funk: The Best of the Brand New Heavies; the title was recycled the following year for an American compilation, Trunk Funk Classics: 1991-2000, which featured a new song recorded with Davenport.

In early 2006 it was announced that Davenport would be reuniting with the group. A new album, Get Used to It, was released later that year and was followed by a tour of the U.K. and Europe. A two-disc album, Live in London, appeared in 2009. During the next decade, the band recorded an album of library music-style funk instrumentals, titled Dunk Your Trunk (2011), as well as Forward (2013), a proper studio album featuring lead vocals from Davenport and Dawn Joseph. Joseph was the main singer on 2014's Sweet Freaks, the group's first release on the Earmusic label. It would be five more years before the Heavies dropped another new album; TBNH, their 11th studio effort, appeared in 2019, the first since their debut to be released on the Acid Jazz label which had given its name to their music style. Once again featuring Davenport and boasting a new lead vocalist in the shape of Angela Ricci, it saw them teaming with outside collaborators such as Mark Ronson.

Chris Joss • I've Been Remixed

Chris Joss is a French multi-instrumentalist and record producer, who has released seven solo albums; five of them by ESL Music. His music ranges from funk to electronica, and tracks excerpted from his releases are featured in movie trailers such as Accepted (2006), Argo (2012), Hotel for Dogs (2009), Inside Deep Throat (2005), Ocean's Thirteen (2007), and Role Models (2008), and the television shows Six Feet Under and Better Call Saul.

His track "I want Freedom", taken from his fourth album, is part of Apple Inc.'s iPhoto 10 and iPhoto 11 software.

His album The Man with a Suitcase (1999) was part of a trend in the late 1990s of "imaginary soundtracks", compositions created to accompany films that did not actually exist. In the soundtrack, he attempted to pay homage to works of the 1960s and 1970s such as The Avengers and Mission Impossible, with a mixture of jazz, pop, rock, and funk.

Mike Painter & The Family Shakers - Go Up!

Musician and composer from Milan, started out his career in the early ‘80s as keyboard player with “Four by Art”, an historical band from the Sixties Revival Italian Mod scene.. From then on, he joined several bands, such as “The Investigators”, “Il Santo” and “Mr.Tokyo & The Beat Goes On”. And the solo project “Mike Painter & The Family Shakers”. From Jimmy Smith to Booker T & The MG’s, From Jimmy Mc Griff to Billy Preston, these are just a few amongst the most well known names that made the history of this genre, which inspired his own sound, making him a reference point both as Mod icon in the Italian scene, and in the ‘60s and ‘70s style Spy-movies field.The single “Go Up” from his debut album as a solo artist, distributed by the Family Affair label, became the soundtrack for the TV advert “Kronos Shoes” (starring Filippo Nardi, ex Iene as testimonial).Inspired by the British TV Series U.F.O., he arranged an instrumental version, which in turn was picked up by the Acid Jazz record label. More tracks were then published by Irma Record and Record Kick labels.Further, he worked with the American record label “Hammond Beat”, composing music for the Wilson Chance movie soundtrack. He has been taking part of the most important and influential International Mod/Sixties festivals, such as Beat Epoque, Festival Lounge, All Saint Mod Holiday, and the Sunslice Festival held in Toulon, France, critically acclaimed by the foreign and local press as Rockerilla, Rockstar and Acid Jazz magazines. In 2008, he met up with Viola Road starting a new band “Mike Painter Quintet & Viola Road”. Singer/songwriter Viola Road is one of best loved and appreciated voices in the soul scene in Milan. She sings melodies and writes lyrics for the Mike Painter Quintet with whom he performed and cut tracks for the album “Hammond Voice”.  Also, she is currently writing and performing with soul band with psychedelic and hard rock influences “Lord Shani”, and together have recorded the album”Progress Your Soul”. From 2009 to 2011, Mike Painter Quintet & Viola Road have had a residency at the Connie Douglas Club, Milan, the temple of the Burlesque in town. Furthermore, they play at cocktail  parties held at the Hotel Maison Moschino, as well as at the Triennale Fair of Milan, where they played for the opening of Designer Luigi Colani’s Museum and many more dates. The band recorded the album “Hammond Voice” in 2012, coming out with two promo videos : “Not One Drop” and “Lies”. The record includes 10 tunes, original songs, instrumental tracks and covers, enriched with fascinating soul and vibes so typical of the Mod and Rhythm & Blus cultures.

Más tarde, publicó más temas en los sellos Irma Record y Record Kick.Además, trabajó con el sello discográfico estadounidense "Hammond Beat", componiendo la música para la banda sonora de la película Wilson Chance. Ha participado en los más importantes e influyentes festivales internacionales Mod/Sixties, como Beat Epoque, Festival Lounge, All Saint Mod Holiday, y el Sunslice Festival celebrado en Toulon, Francia, aclamado por la prensa extranjera y local como las revistas Rockerilla, Rockstar y Acid Jazz. En 2008, se reunió con Viola Road formando una nueva banda "Mike Painter Quintet & Viola Road". La cantante y compositora Viola Road es una de las voces más queridas y apreciadas de la escena soul de Milán. Canta melodías y escribe letras para el Mike Painter Quintet, con el que ha actuado y grabado temas para el álbum "Hammond Voice".  Además, actualmente escribe y actúa con la banda de soul con influencias psicodélicas y de hard rock "Lord Shani", y juntos han grabado el álbum "Progress Your Soul". De 2009 a 2011, Mike Painter Quintet & Viola Road han tenido una residencia en el Connie Douglas Club de Milán, el templo del burlesque en la ciudad. Además, tocan en los cócteles celebrados en el Hotel Maison Moschino, así como en la Feria Triennale de Milán, donde tocaron para la inauguración del Museo del Diseñador Luigi Colani y muchas más fechas. La banda grabó el álbum "Hammond Voice" en 2012, saliendo al mercado con dos vídeos promocionales: "Not One Drop" y "Lies". El disco incluye 10 temas, canciones originales, temas instrumentales y covers, enriquecidos con el fascinante soul y las vibraciones tan típicas de las culturas Mod y Rhythm & Blus.

Chris Joss is a French multi-instrumentalist and record producer, who has released seven solo albums; five of them by ESL Music. His music ranges from funk to electronica, and tracks excerpted from his releases are featured in movie trailers such as Accepted (2006), Argo (2012), Hotel for Dogs (2009), Inside Deep Throat (2005), Ocean's Thirteen (2007), and Role Models (2008), and the television shows Six Feet Under and Better Call Saul.

His track "I want Freedom", taken from his fourth album, is part of Apple Inc.'s iPhoto 10 and iPhoto 11 software.

His album The Man with a Suitcase (1999) was part of a trend in the late 1990s of "imaginary soundtracks", compositions created to accompany films that did not actually exist. In the soundtrack, he attempted to pay homage to works of the 1960s and 1970s such as The Avengers and Mission Impossible, with a mixture of jazz, pop, rock, and funk.
