Guitarist Johnny Smith's career spans the decades of the 1940's through the 1990's. From the very beginning of his musical career he influenced the playing of other guitarists. In fact, many mention Smith as a major influence on their playing. The major guitar builders as Guild, Gibson, Benedetto, and the Heritage all have their signature Johnny Smith high end models as a tribute to this master.

John Henry Smith, Jr. was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1922 and was only five years old when he became fascinated with the guitar. His father played five-string banjo but guitar was John's first and lasting love. Initially he was frustrated by the lack of a guitar teacher or instruction manuals: determined to master the instrument, he taught himself to play. Many outstanding and individual jazz soloists have fallen back on the empirical method for the same reason as Smith and emerged with wholly distinctive sounds. In 1935 the Smith family moved to Portland, Maine: Johnny was 13 and good enough to play in local bands.

In 1942 he joined the USAAF (he was already a student pilot) and ended up in a band which needed a cornet player rather than a guitarist. In six months he had learned the cornet well enough to be given the position of first cornetist. After his discharge from the Air Force in 1946 he went back to Portland to play both guitar and trumpet on local radio as well as playing in clubs at night, but the pay was never very good. He went to New York to work as an arranger at NBC and in 1947 he became a member of the NBC orchestra. For eight years he worked with the orchestra as guitarist, trumpeter, arranger and composer.

Although he had been greatly influenced by Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian at the outset (he learned Django's solos from record and actually met the Gypsy guitarist when he came to the United States in 1946) Johnny did not consider himself to be a jazz musician. Nevertheless, he made his first record as leader in March 1952, in the company of Stan Getz, Eddie Safranski, Sanford Gold and Don Lamond. One title from that date, “Moonlight in Vermont,” was a turning point in Smith's career despite its short duration. “Vermont” was made for the Royal Roost label (frequently abbreviated to Roost Records) and the company signed Smith to a long-term contract during which time he produced around 20 albums. Roost was later absorbed by Roulette which reissued several of Johnny's LPs. Most of the albums featured solo guitar or a trio; two backed Smith with strings playing arrangements the guitarist wrote himself. The dexterous fingering, the perfection of manner in which he ran chords and arpeggios, all contributed to the acclaim for Johnny's work.

During his tenure at Roost Records, he produced a long list of significant recordings that include the great quartet recordings: “The Johnny Smith Quartet,” and “The Sound of The Johnny Smith Guitar” among others. Also, during this period he made the “Man With The Blue Guitar.” This album, unusual for its time, has probably been transcribed more than any other Johnny Smith recording. Then there was the production “Annotations of The Muses,” on which Johnny Smith displays everything that made him a great musician and an extraordinary guitar player.

Johnny Smith retired from the jazz scene in the 1960's to Colorado where he opened a music store. He continued to play in local nightclubs and made a recording with some local musicians “Reminiscing,” that showed he had lost none of the signature Johnny Smith style or technique. His last recorded work was the Concord Records CD “Legends,” in 1994.

The Johnny Smith Guitars:

In 1955, after discussions with the Guild Guitar Company, Smith designed a guitar and sent the drawings and specifications to the company. The Guild designers modified it (to Smith's dissatisfaction), and manufactured the resulting guitar as the Guild Johnny Smith Award.

In 1961, Gibson, went to meet the retired Smith at his home in Colorado Springs. Smith designed the guitar he wanted built. The design was accepted by Gibson with a few minor cosmetic changes which were acceptable to Smith. Gibson began production of the resulting Gibson Johnny Smith model that year. Guild continued to produce their Johnny Smith guitar under the model name Guild Artist Award.

When Gibson moved its manufacturing facilities from Kalamazoo, Michigan to Nashville, Tennessee, several of their managers and artisans chose to stay behind. Many of these ex-employees formed Heritage Guitars and bought the old Kalamazoo factory from Gibson. Given a choice between Gibson and Heritage building the guitar that bore his name, Smith chose to stay with the old artisans at the old location under new ownership. The Heritage Johnny Smith model was introduced in 1989. Like Guild before them, Gibson continued to manufacture their version of the Johnny Smith design with a new name: the Gibson LeGrand.

Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, of which Guild Guitars was a subsidiary, asked Smith if he would be willing to return his endorsement to the Guild Artist Award. Familiar with Schultz's management, and knowing that the construction would be supervised by master luthier Bob Benedetto, Smith agreed. The Guild Johnny Smith Award by Benedetto was available through Guild dealers until early 2006 when Benedetto left Fender.

While the tune "Walk, Don't Run" was such a smash for the Ventures it became synonymous with their name, the version by its composer, jazz guitarist Johnny Smith, is well-worth a listen itself. This Roulette album taking its name from the song came out in 1954, after Smith had become well-established as a NBC Studios staff guitarist who could be heard on television, on radio, and with the NBC Orchestra. Smith's quartet with rhythm guitarist Perry Lopez, drummer Don Lamond and bassist Arnold Fishkin features the original version of the tune (its original title was "Opus"), as well as a host of standards including "Moonlight in Vermont," "Stranger in Paradise," "Lover Man," "Autumn in New York," "In a Sentimental Mood," and "Someone to Watch Over Me." While a fine single-string soloist, Smith was also a genius at chordal structures, which is wonderfully evidenced in "Sophisticated Lady" and "Our Love Is Here to Stay." The CD version of the album contains a pair of bonus tracks, including a version of "Lullaby of Birdland," for which Smith took a page from the Les Paul songbook and overdubbed a second guitar part for himself. This may not be the most recognizable album in the jazz guitar canon, but it is a very fine one and should be explored.

Along with Julius Watkins, John Graas was one of the first jazz French horn soloists. After playing some classical music, in 1942 he became a member of the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. A period in the Army (1942-1945) and stints with the Cleveland Orchestra and Tex Beneke's big band preceded Graas' first high-profile gig, playing with Stan Kenton's Innovations Orchestra (1950-1951). After leaving Kenton, he settled in Los Angeles and worked as a studio musician in addition to being used on West Coast jazz dates by Shorty Rogers and others. Graas, an excellent composer who sought to combine together jazz and classical music (predating the third stream movement), recorded fairly regularly as a leader during 1953-1958, sessions that (with the exception of one V.S.O.P. release) have not been reissued. He died of a heart attack at the age of 45.

Guitarist Johnny Smith will always be best remembered for his 1952 hit recording of "Moonlight in Vermont," a mellow ballad that also features Stan Getz. Smith, whose chordal-oriented style was self-taught, originally played trumpet, violin, and viola before switching to guitar. A studio musician from 1947 on, Smith's impressive technique and quiet sound made him in great demand even before "Moonlight" and, although he never had another hit, he was a popular attraction throughout the 1950s. After moving to Colorado in the 1960s he opened a music store, taught, and maintained a lower profile, occasionally recording in New York. Smith died in June 2013 at his home in Colorado Springs at 90 years of age.

Guitarist Johnny Smith's career spans the decades of the 1940's through the 1990's. From the very beginning of his musical career he influenced the playing of other guitarists. In fact, many mention Smith as a major influence on their playing. The major guitar builders as Guild, Gibson, Benedetto, and the Heritage all have their signature Johnny Smith high end models as a tribute to this master.

John Henry Smith, Jr. was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1922 and was only five years old when he became fascinated with the guitar. His father played five-string banjo but guitar was John's first and lasting love. Initially he was frustrated by the lack of a guitar teacher or instruction manuals: determined to master the instrument, he taught himself to play. Many outstanding and individual jazz soloists have fallen back on the empirical method for the same reason as Smith and emerged with wholly distinctive sounds. In 1935 the Smith family moved to Portland, Maine: Johnny was 13 and good enough to play in local bands.

In 1942 he joined the USAAF (he was already a student pilot) and ended up in a band which needed a cornet player rather than a guitarist. In six months he had learned the cornet well enough to be given the position of first cornetist. After his discharge from the Air Force in 1946 he went back to Portland to play both guitar and trumpet on local radio as well as playing in clubs at night, but the pay was never very good. He went to New York to work as an arranger at NBC and in 1947 he became a member of the NBC orchestra. For eight years he worked with the orchestra as guitarist, trumpeter, arranger and composer.

Although he had been greatly influenced by Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian at the outset (he learned Django's solos from record and actually met the Gypsy guitarist when he came to the United States in 1946) Johnny did not consider himself to be a jazz musician. Nevertheless, he made his first record as leader in March 1952, in the company of Stan Getz, Eddie Safranski, Sanford Gold and Don Lamond. One title from that date, “Moonlight in Vermont,” was a turning point in Smith's career despite its short duration. “Vermont” was made for the Royal Roost label (frequently abbreviated to Roost Records) and the company signed Smith to a long-term contract during which time he produced around 20 albums. Roost was later absorbed by Roulette which reissued several of Johnny's LPs. Most of the albums featured solo guitar or a trio; two backed Smith with strings playing arrangements the guitarist wrote himself. There was a great appeal to Smith's graceful, melodic treatment of superior tunes. Not only the record-buying public but hundreds of guitarists found the music entrancing. The dexterous fingering, the perfection of manner in which he ran chords and arpeggios, all contributed to the acclaim for Johnny's work.

During his tenure at Roost Records, he produced a long list of significant recordings that include the great quartet recordings: “The Johnny Smith Quartet,” and “The Sound of The Johnny Smith Guitar” among others. Also, during this period he made the “Man With The Blue Guitar.” This album, unusual for its time, has probably been transcribed more than any other Johnny Smith recording. Then there was the production “Annotations of The Muses,” on which Johnny Smith displays everything that made him a great musician and an extraordinary guitar player.

Johnny Smith retired from the jazz scene in the 1960's to Colorado where he opened a music store. He continued to play in local nightclubs and made a recording with some local musicians “Reminiscing,” that showed he had lost none of the signature Johnny Smith style or technique. His last recorded work was the Concord Records CD “Legends,” in 1994.

The Johnny Smith Guitars:

In 1955, after discussions with the Guild Guitar Company, Smith designed a guitar and sent the drawings and specifications to the company. The Guild designers modified it (to Smith's dissatisfaction), and manufactured the resulting guitar as the Guild Johnny Smith Award.

In 1961, Gibson, went to meet the retired Smith at his home in Colorado Springs. Smith designed the guitar he wanted built. The design was accepted by Gibson with a few minor cosmetic changes which were acceptable to Smith. Gibson began production of the resulting Gibson Johnny Smith model that year. Guild continued to produce their Johnny Smith guitar under the model name Guild Artist Award.

When Gibson moved its manufacturing facilities from Kalamazoo, Michigan to Nashville, Tennessee, several of their managers and artisans chose to stay behind. Many of these ex-employees formed Heritage Guitars and bought the old Kalamazoo factory from Gibson. Given a choice between Gibson and Heritage building the guitar that bore his name, Smith chose to stay with the old artisans at the old location under new ownership. The Heritage Johnny Smith model was introduced in 1989. Like Guild before them, Gibson continued to manufacture their version of the Johnny Smith design with a new name: the Gibson LeGrand.

Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, of which Guild Guitars was a subsidiary, asked Smith if he would be willing to return his endorsement to the Guild Artist Award. Familiar with Schultz's management, and knowing that the construction would be supervised by master luthier Bob Benedetto, Smith agreed. The Guild Johnny Smith Award by Benedetto was available through Guild dealers until early 2006 when Benedetto left Fender.

Stan "The Sound" Getz was born on February 2nd 1927 in Philadelphia, and was later in his life to become one of the most popular jazz names of all times. Influenced greatly in his early days by Lester Young, he became himself a major influence on many musicians later in his career, when after forming his own style, he earned a reputation as "One of the all-time great tenor saxophonists".

The young Stan was interested in music from a very early age onwards, although he didn't really play himself until the age of twelve, when he became the proud owner of a harmonica. After playing the bass for a while in the high school band, Stan's interest in music began to grow, and it wasn't long before he had convinced his father to buy him an alto saxophone. From then on it was love at first sight, and after taking lessons and trying out the different kinds of saxophones, Stan Getz decided at the age of thirteen that the tenor was his instrument, the "sound" was born!.

At the age of sixteen, after trying himself out in a number of local bands, his first big opportunity arrived, and after auditioning with Jack Teagardens band, he was in! The year was 1943 and many of Teagardens musicians had been drafted into the military, so the young Stan Getz was given the chance to play real music in a real band. From then on he had the chance to play in a variety of major swing big bands, and after gaining valuable experience with Teagarden, joined Stan Kenton's big band in 1944, and then went on to play with Jimmy Dorsey in early 1945.

A great step forward in his career came in 1945, when after joining Benny Goodman's band he was given the opportunity to solo on a few recordings. After staying with Goodman until early 1946, he had his recording debut as a leader, recording 4 titles in July of the same year. From that time on his reputation and fame grew and after playing with "Woody Herman's Second Herd" (together with Zoot Sims, Herbie Steward and Serge

Chaloff) on the original version of "Four Brothers", Stan Getz had really arrived. At the age of 21 he then became a star in the jazz world after soloing on the recording of "Early Autumn" with Woody Herman, and after leaving Herman's band, he was (with the exception of some tours with Jazz at the Philharmonic) a bandleader for the rest of his career.

In the 1950's, Stan was associated with a kind of jazz known as "cool jazz", (basically meaning, he played bebop) and became during this decade one of the most popular jazz musicians, playing amongst others with Lionel Hampton, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Jimmy Raney, Jimmy Rowles, and Oscar Peterson and after discovering Horace Silver in 1950,he used him in his quartet for some time . Despite some drug problems his popularity continued to grow, and he was a frequent "poll winner" in the fifties. After spending 1958-1960 in Europe (mainly in Denmark), Getz returned to the U.S.A. for his recordings of the "Focus" album, and then played his part in 1962 in the popularising of bossa nova (a mixture of jazz and samba).. With the recording of "Jazz Samba", together with Charlie Byrd he then had a big hit with "Desafinado". In 1963 after working with Gary Farlands big band, Luiz Bonfa and Laurindo Almeida, he recorded with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joaco Gilberto, the mega hit, "The Girl from Ipanema" (that reached the top of the charts in 1964).

Beginning in 1964 Getz returned from the bossa-nova to a more "straight ahead" style with his quartet. After Chick Corea joined in 1967 and Gary Burton's vibes were featured, (instead of piano) Getz became known by some as "The Godfather of Jazz". In 1969, after struggling with drugs and the law again, he left the U.S.A. to live in Malaga, Spain and stopped performing for two years. After returning to music in 1971, some of the highlights of the 70s were, "Dynasty", with organist Eddie Louiss (1971), "Captain Marvel" with Chick Corea (1972), "The Peacocks", with Jimmy Rowles (1975). Throughout the rest of the decade and right through the 1980's he carried on recording and performing, playing with many name musicians including Lou Levy, Mitchell Forman, Jim McNeely and Kenny Baron, and his last recording in 1991, "People Time", features some excellent duets with Baron. Stan Getz made more then 300 recordings in his nearly 60 year long career and became known as "The Sound" due to his style of playing with a rich and pure tone. He will be remembered as one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists.

Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, of which Guild Guitars was a subsidiary, asked Smith if he would be willing to return his endorsement to the Guild Artist Award. This beautifully packaged and expertly annotated eight-CD limited-edition boxed set from Mosaic includes his complete small-group recordings for Roost, most of which have languished out of print for decades. Smith's unique voicings on his instrument set him apart from other players, yet he maintains a lush, crystal-clear tone no matter the tempo or setting. Smith draws from a wide range of sources within the 22 featured sessions, ranging from show tunes and standards ("My Funny Valentine," "Yesterdays," "'I'll Remember April," and "Body and Soul") to jazz compositions by Duke Ellington, George Shearing, John Lewis, and Bud Powell, along with a number of his superb originals, which have been unjustly overlooked. The best-known material comes from the three 1952 sessions which made up Moonlight in Vermont, featuring Smith with either Stan Getz or Zoot Sims, and a meeting with some of New York's busiest session musicians (Hank Jones, George Duvivier, and Ed Shaughnessey). Especially rewarding is the first of two solo efforts by Smith, which draws from the vast Jimmy Van Heusen songbook.
