James Taylor Quartet • Do Your Own Thing

Emerging from the tragic bankruptcy of Stiff Records, James Taylor, founding member of the infamous group The Prisoners - formed The James Taylor Quartet JTQ's first single, Blow Up, was released on the Re Elect The President (Acid Jazz) label in 1985. It was a huge success, immediately attracting the attention of John Peel who championed it; the track appearing three years running on Peel's seminal Festive 50 Chart. After an impressive 13 weeks in the Indie Singles Chart, the band decided to start work on a mini album, titled Mission Impossible.
This debut, released in '86, was naturally featured around Taylor's Hammond organ sound to produce classic covers of Sixties film themes Mission Impossible, Goldfinger, Mrs Robinson and other heavily grooving instrumental punk funk tunes. With JTQ's following growing, the band were encouraged to put out their second album on Re Elect The President, The Money Spyder.
By the time it was released in 1987, the band's attentions were being drawn away from their recording career to their now massive live audience. JTQ's emphasis on live 'dance' music has been the key to the band's success, enabling them to establish a solid relationship between them and their fans. With the focus now strongly on being a 'live' band, The Quartet gigged relentlessly, selling out on the London club circuit. During this period, major record company interest was aroused resulting in a long term deal with Polydor. The James Taylor Quartet released three albums on Polydor, Wait a Minute in 1988, Get Organised in 1989 and Do Your Own Thing in 1990. A number of hit singles were spawned from these such as the acclaimed and well-loved classic The Theme from Starsky & Hutch.
With the release of their first live album, Absolute in 1991, The Quartet moved to Polydor subsidiary Big Life. Featuring guest vocals from Rose Windross of Soul II Soul on Shelter and Noel McKoy on Somebody, the album initiated JTQ's introduction to the Soul Market. In 1992, Noel McKoy officially became the Quartet's lead vocalist. Singles See a Brighter day and the top 40 Love the life were both taken from the Top 30 album Supernatural Feeling, released in 1993. In this year alone, the band performed over one hundred and fifty shows in 15 different countries, including destinations as far flung as Thailand, Japan and the USA. The climax of this was headlining in front of 5,000 people at London's Brixton Academy. With JTQ's success, James' musical talent became admired by numerous other acts - The Wonderstuff, Manic Street Preachers, The Pogues and U2 have all featured James and his distinctive Hammond playing on their albums.
In 1994, with chart success behind them and their established international live network, The James Taylor Quartet made the decision to go full circle and rejoin Edward Piller at the independent Acid Jazz. The first album from his new home, In The hand of the Inevitable was received with critical acclaim and is Acid Jazz's current top seller having sold over 200,000 copies - further proof that James Taylor is one of the great Hammond players of this generation.
Also released was the retrospective BBC Radio Sessions LP and for the first time James' material was released in the USA via Hollywood records with tracks from Mission Impossible being the highest climber in the college radio charts.
James' 10th album - Living Underground saw a return to the style he loved most - instrumental Hammond led rocking jazz funk workouts. It featured the stripped down to the bone sound that pays respect to the earliest JTQ hits like Mission Impossible and The Money Spyder. The press respected him for the move away from commercial pop/soul and the now wholly instrumental live set ripped up the crowds more than ever. 1996 saw James play two full sell out weeks at London's Jazz Cafe and a sell out show at The Brixton Academy, as well as tours in uncharted territories from Brazil to Yugoslavia.
In 1997 James had the chance to fulfil a dream - film theme's always featured heavily throughout his albums and he was asked to score a theme for Austin Powers, a spy spoof starring Mike Myers (Wayne's World). James also set up his own label JTI Records, releasing a compilation album of various artists who he has worked with and respected over the years including Simon Bartholomew (Brand New Heavies), The Prisoners, New Jersey Kings and The Apostles. 1998 saw James touring the UK and Europe to support the release of MOBO-nominated Whole Lotta Live, a new live album by the band released in May. It also saw James sign to a new label GUT Records, to begin the next phase of the adventure. The autumn of 1999 saw James featuring on the Tom Jones duets album Reload with Looking Out of My Window which they performed together on the National Lottery Show. A change of label also spawned a change of style with the latest album on Gut records released in December. A Bigger Picture saw the band mixing their unique brand of funk with a more polished and 'clubby' production, with the vocals being provided by a brand new singer, Yvonne Yaney. The band however, decided to leave the label after just one release due to creative differences, and have recently signed a new deal with American label Ubiquity.

James Taylor Quartet • Live At The Jazz Cafe

Scorching 2008 live platter from this veteran British Acid Jazz outfit. With his trademark howling Hammond, James Taylor has a reputation as a solid and accomplished band leader. 'The Theme from Starsky and Hutch' cemented the band's reputation as masters of the Jazz/Funk/R&B workout. Formed in 1985, JTQ began playing music similar to the rare-groove Jazz-Funk then in vogue around London. By the early '90s, that movement had spawned Acid Jazz, and JTQ found itself at the forefront of a vibrant young club scene.

The James Taylor Quartet • In the Hand of the Inevitable

Review:
Released in 1995, In the Hand of the Inevitable is the most curious of all of the James Taylor Quartet's recordings. After helping to usher in the acid jazz movement on recordings like 1987's Money Spyder, with its spy/noir-ish soundtrack feel equally influenced by Lalo Schifrin and the Ventures, and the masterpiece that is the band's 1989 effort, Get Organized (their first to employ vocals -- in a truly soulful jazz scat style), they moved to the center, becoming more a house music soundtrack act with diva-like vocals (sometimes male-centric as well with Noel McCoy watering down the earlier gains they'd made musically). In the Hand of the Inevitable, issued stateside by Hollywood's Acid Jazz imprint, is a transition album. In its native U.K., this set is regarded as a classic meld of the band's earlier style and the more soul and house approach of the immediately preceding albums, Supernatural Feeling (1993) and Do Your Own Thing (1991). Here, it's regarded as a bit more ho-hum, generic safe-stepping period album. It's neither. In the Hand of the Inevitable is another singular moment for the JTQ, where the integration of modern British soul and the big-beat intensity of being a jazz group began to form a new identity for the band, which was equally at home in a sweaty club or a concert hall. In fact, if this set owes to anything, it's a deep nod to Brian Auger's Oblivion Express. Check the funky, horn-driven riffing on "3 Mile Island," the upscale, jazzed-up soul in "Keep on Moving," and the burning organ acid boil on the closing title track for evidence of Auger's lineage firmly imprinted on these cuts' DNA. On the other hand, the mod, wild-style rave-up organ groove -- patented in the sound lab by one Georgie Fame -- is readily apparent in the band's killer reading of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love." But then there is the house-soul model too, evidenced by the beautiful vocal interplay of "Love Will Keep Us Together" (no, not the Captain & Tennille hit) as well as Gary Crockett's euphoric, jazzed-up anthem "Sounds of Freedom." If In the Hand of the Inevitable sounds like anything, it sounds like a band whose members have so many possibilities at hand that they can't focus on any one for too long, making for a thoroughly exhilarating listen.

James Taylor Quartet • Hammond-ology

The James Taylor Quartet (or JTQ) are a British four-piece jazz funk band, who have become renowned for their live performances. They were formed in 1987 by Hammond organ player James Taylor following the break-up of his former band The Prisoners in the wake of Stiff Records’ bankruptcy. The current line-up is James Taylor (Keyboards and Orchestration), Mark Cox (guitar), Andrew McKinney (bass) and Pat Illingworth (drums), although recordings and live performances usually feature vocalist Yvonne Yanney.

The James Taylor Quartet’s first single, “Blow-Up” (a funked-up version of Herbie Hancock’s main theme from the seminal 1960s film of the same name), was released in 1987 on the Re Elect The President label, which would later become the Acid Jazz label. The track was championed by the NME and John Peel, appearing in Peel’s Festive Fifty chart for 1987. The band’s debut 7 track mini album, Mission Impossible (1987) followed and predominantly comprised covers of 1960s film themes such as “Alfie”, “Mrs. Robinson” and “Goldfinger” in a rough, up-tempo, almost punk-like style, that was primarily focussed on Taylor’s Hammond organ playing. Their second album, The Money Spyder (1987), was the soundtrack to an imaginary spy film, applying the band’s distinctive style to Taylor’s own compositions.

While promoting these albums The James Taylor Quartet developed a strong reputation as a live band, that remains to this day. The live set focuses on accessible rhythm driven music, that some classify as having elements of modern dance music, despite including a lot of improvised solos. During this period a contract with a major record led to them playing to ever increasing audiences. The band recorded their signature tune “The Theme From Starsky and Hutch” featuring Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis of The JBs in 1988 and this was included on their next album “Wait A Minute” (1988). Their popularity as a live act led to the release of the live album Absolute – JTQ Live in 1991, which attempted to capture the experience of the band in concert (even though it was recorded ‘live’ in the studio, the audience cheering being overdubbed later).

James Taylor Quartet • A Taste Of Cherry

James Taylor Quartet • Don't Mess With Mr. T

James Taylor's vintage Hammond-led outfit has consistently delighted lovers of jazz, funk and R&B in equal measure over the last twenty years. The group is most famous for its signature tune, the "Theme From Starsky and Hutch, but this album shows greater variety than the standard jam workout. Don't Mess With Mr. T: James Taylor Quartet Plays Motown is a series of 12 cover tracks from Marvin Gaye to Stevie Wonder.

The quartet itself, which comprises Taylor (Hammond organ), Nigel Price (guitar), Andy McKinney (bass) and Adam Betts (drums), is augmented for this record by four more musicians: a full horn section and an extra percussionist. As well as the expected fiery instrumentals, the band is joined by leading soul vocalists Omar, Hil St Soul and Donna Gardier who each add their own notable contributions to the proceedings.

Barrett Strong's 1959 hit single, "Money (That's What I Want), is given the traditional JTQ treatment: wildly funked up and laced with simmering grooves. Jamie Anderson on alto saxophone catches the ear with a short but very sweet solo which is a great opening statement for the disc. Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up and Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours) are a little more chilled out and atmospheric with Taylor's organ taking the leading melody. On the latter song the backing vocal chorus is maintained, a nice touch to counter the instrumental domination.

British soul singer Omar adds his expressive, flexible voice to Gaye's "After The Dance, one of album's vocal highlights. This track is perhaps the defining example of the record's success in presenting modern takes of old school Motown classics. It's undeniably a soul-influenced record but the funk-infused instrumentals and new arrangements give it a distinctive and unmistakable contemporary feel. Don't Mess With Mr. T is another inventive success for the James Taylor Quartet.

James Taylor Quartet • A Few Useful Tips About Living Underground

Review by Glenn Swan
The mostly instrumental albums of British keyboardist James Taylor are as diverse as they are accomplished, running the spectrum between skinny-necktie '60s (The Money Spyder) and contemporary jazz (In the Hand of the Inevitable). This time he hits an especially satisfying nostalgic niche: a faithful jazz-rock fusion that hearkens back to the classic '70s TV cop shows and the high standards of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, and various other sorely missed demi-gods of the genre. Taylor lays triple-thick hot fudge on most of the tracks in (A Few Useful Tips About) Living Underground -- the original (and superior) import version of the album that would later become the U.S. release Creation, trading out a few tracks along the way. "Selectivity" crashes through the speakers with polished brass arrangements, congas, and rhythm guitar, and "Creation (Fanfare for a Third Millennium)" belts out fantastic energy, with blistering keyboard solos on the Hammond B-3. "Staying Active" only adds fuel to the fire, an up-tempo and relentless show-stopper that makes the ears sweat. "It's Your World" is a groovy, soulful stroll along a Malibu sunset, and "The Theme From Dirty Harry" turns Lalo Schifrin's original score into a relentless chase with burning flute solos and Latin jazz pounding through the veins. "Summer Fantasy" features a synth melody line cruising the streets in the spirit of Chuck Mangione as an undercover vigilante with great sideburns. "Check It Out" is a celebration in clichés -- a low-rider Cadillac stuffed with gold chains, fur coats, lovely ladies, turntable scratches, and the spirit of Bootsy Collins at the wheel -- even stiff necks will loosen up as the groove chugs along. Here, there, and almost everywhere, Taylor's production values are crisp without being dry, striking the perfect balance between yesterday's live improvisational energy and today's front-row center-stage acoustics. With solid musicianship at every turn and a commitment to excellence, this album is delightfully retro without being a joke. Simply put, it makes you feel good.

In the Hand of the Inevitable).

James Taylor Quartet • Whole Lotta Live

Emerging from the tragic bankruptcy of Stiff Records, James Taylor, founding member of the infamous group The Prisoners - formed The James Taylor Quartet JTQ's first single, Blow Up, was released on the Re Elect The President (Acid Jazz) label in 1985. James Taylor Quartet • Get Organized

Review by Owen Guthrie-Jones
On this, their fourth studio album, you are treated to the unexpected missing link between James Taylor Quartet's early mod-cum-spy theme sound and the later polished acid jazz feel (which carried the band through to be the respected pioneer figures they are today) without sounding exactly like either of them.

Having landed themselves with the big-budget U.K. label Polydor, James Taylor found he could indulge himself with the best in big jazz-funk sounds, employing what sounded suspiciously like more than a "quartet" to produce a collection of bold and brassy numbers that escalated the sounds of Johnny Hammond and Booker T into the late '80s. The album begins as it finishes, with a touching yet relentless jazz-rock instrumental groove combining clever chord structures and strong piano flourishes gliding over, of course, Taylor's trademark whirring Hammond organ. As ever, it's with this tool that Taylor guides the listener's focus (hence the title), on this record especially, as all but two of the songs are instrumental, a fact you would only subliminally realize as the organ and brass lay down strong melodies. In fact, the only real inclusion of vocals comes courtesy of Cleveland Watkiss on "It Doesn't Matter," a feel-good jive-inspired mid-tempo track, and the anthemic "Breakout," which gives the band a brief chance to exercise their vocal chords. Elsewhere, the listener is treated to cool modern boogaloos and bossa novas as Taylor proves he's more than just adept on the ivories, but a capable arranger as well.
