VA • Atlantic Jazz Piano
Review by Dave Nathan
Founded in 1947, Atlantic Records has been the home of some of jazz's more important figures (as well as blues). This compilation, originally issued as a two-fer LP, catches some of the excellent performances by the label's stable of jazz pianists over a period of 35 years. The earliest track is from Erroll Garner's first and only Atlantic album, Passport to Fame, a 1950 trio session where Garner applies his captivating style to "The Way You Look Tonight." The penultimate track on the album is from modernist Don Pullen. In between, there are cuts from albums made by some of the top jazz pianists, not only from that period, but whose work has stood the test of time and is still played regularly. It also shows that owners/producers Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun and Herb Abramson were wise and sensible enough to find room for artists representing a wide diversity of styles, from Garner through Dave Brubeck to Pullen and Joe Zawinul. Wide stylistic berth allowances notwithstanding, for most of these artists their stint with the label was short, a stopping off place before landing contracts with a major recording studio such as Columbia. The title is also a bit misleading in the sense the label never had some of the participants under contract. The cuts by Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans were from sessions headed by Art Blakey and Herbie Mann, respectively. But no matter how they got on the album, this collection of jazz piano is unmatched for its breadth and depth.

The Way You Look Tonight".

Junior Mance Trio • Deep The Classic 1980 New York Studio Session Remixed
Description from JSP Records / Bear Family Records:
A jazz critic once complained that Jr Mance 'turned everything into a blues'... wrong! Jr Mance turned everything into The Blues! His style was deeply funky, soulful, genre busting, percussive and was as much deep blues as any wailing harmonica player. This album was recorded in 1980 at New York's famed Downtown Sound. It was recorded direct to stereo on 1/4 tape. The balance was brilliantly caught by the engineer and of course, no overdubs, just real music played by real musicians in 'the moment'. The remastering has been done from the original session tapes but utilises the most modern technology. This music has never sounded better or more powerful and I think this rework of the original tapes brings out even more of the power of the piano, the sheer percussiveness of the playing. This set is no mere 'reissue' but is a complete reimagining of this classic session.

Bennie Green • Glidin' Along
Biography by Ron Wynn
A capable bebop soloist despite his style having firm swing-era roots, Bennie Green was a major trombonist and bandleader in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. His sound and tone were large and round, and his approach was heavily influenced by traditionalists like Trummy Young. Green's solos were enjoyable and always well-executed, but he was never as ambitious in his playing as latter-day trombonists like J.J. Johnson or Curtis Fuller.
Green had a musical background: one of his brothers played tenor sax with Roy Eldridge's band. He studied at the famous Du Sable High School in Chicago under Capt. Walt Dyett, then began playing professionally with local groups. Budd Johnson recommended Green to Earl Hines in the early '40s, and he worked with Hines until 1948 (except for two-year stint in the Army). Green played with Gene Ammons for a short time, then with Charlie Ventura in the late '40s and early '50s. He toured with Hines again from 1951 until 1953.
Green led his own combo in the '50s and '60s, often playing with either Charlie Rouse or Jimmy Forrest. He also worked with Sonny Clark, Paul Chambers, Sarah Vaughan, Ike Quebec, Booker Ervin, and Elvin Jones. Green performed and recorded with Duke Ellington in 1968, playing on his second sacred concert. He settled in Las Vegas in the late '60s, working in hotel bands. Green was also featured on recordings made at the Newport in New York festival in the early '70s. He recorded as a leader for Jubilee, Prestige, Blue Note, Enrica, Time, and Vee Jay.

Joe Gordon • Introducing Joe Gordon
Biography by Scott Yanow
A fine bop-oriented trumpeter, Joe Gordon's tragic death in a fire cut short any chance he had at fame in the jazz world. Gordon was with Dizzy Gillespie's 1956 big band, touring the Mideast, and getting a solo on "Night in Tunisia." He was in the Horace Silver quintet, moved back to Boston for a period, and then relocated to Los Angeles where he worked and recorded with Barney Kessel, Benny Carter, Harold Land, Shelly Manne, Dexter Gordon, and Shelly Manne (1958-1960). Joe Gordon, who led dates for EmArcy (1955) and Contemporary (1961), was on one Thelonious Monk recording and spent his last few years as a freelance musician.

Junior Mance Trio • At The Village Vanguard
Pianist Junior Mance has long been typecast as a soulful blues player so, as if to confuse listeners, he starts off this live set with an uptempo "Looptown" on which he displays technique worthy of Oscar Peterson. Mance's many fans have no reason to despair though for, in addition to a boppish rendition of "Girl of My Dreams," the pianist does perform a generous amount of blues and soulful pieces. Bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley also help out .

Wilbur Ware • The Chicago Sound

Like so many other musicians of that era, Wilbur Ware was addicted to narcotics, which caused his career to be interrupted between 1963 and 1969. After leaving prison, Wilbur Ware resumed his professional career with vigour and played with Clifford Jordan, Elvin Jones and Sonny Rollins. He died of emphysema in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1979.

Eddie Lockjaw Davis-Johnny Griffin • Live At Minton's [1961]
Review
by Bob Rusch
This duo (tenor saxophonists Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin) made about a dozen LPs together, most for Jazzland and Prestige, and they are all worth investigating. They had a special affinity for pianist Thelonious Monk's music, and while there were other sets which emphasize that better, the Monk pieces ("Straight No Chaser"/"In Walked Bud") included in the program on this live set were among the highlights.

Howard McGhee • The Classic 1960s Albums Vol 1
Among the first bebop jazz trumpeters (along with Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro and Idrees Sulieman), Howard McGhee was known for his fast fingers and very high notes, but is rarely credited for the influence he extended to younger trumpeters in an era when the instrument had come back into vogue among students of jazz. Despite a troubled life and career, Howard McGhee remains a huge inspiration for younger jazz musicians, students and fans alike. The collection here brings together eight of the very finest albums the great man ever released or played on, making it the ideal go-to- compilation for collectors and fans of this pioneering, albeit hugely underrated, musician.

Bernard Purdie • Soul To Jazz
Artist Biography by Ron Wynn
An all-time great soul, R&B, funk, and pop drummer, Bernard Purdie's
impeccable time and mastery of backbeats and grooves are celebrated. He
moved to New York from Maryland in 1960, and recorded with James Brown,
King Curtis, and many others. He was CTI's house drummer in the late
'60s and early '70s, and worked with Grover Washington, Jr. and George
Benson among several others. Purdie toured with Curtis and Aretha
Franklin in 1970, and was Franklin's music director until 1975. During
his studio days in the early '70s, Purdie recorded with Louis Armstrong
and Gato Barbieri along with numerous rock, pop, and soul sessions. He
recorded with Dizzy Gillespie in 1980 at the Montreux Jazz Festival and
toured with him in 1983. Purdie recorded with Hank Crawford during the
early '80s, and has continued working steadily into the '90s. He
generated a firestorm of reaction in 1993 when he charged it was his
uncredited drumming rather than Ringo Starr's on some Beatles tracks.
Purdie claimed proof was forthcoming, but none was presented. He made a
rare date as a leader for Flying Dutchman in 1972, Pretty Purdie, that
has long since disappeared. But Purdie can be heard on countless discs
by Brown, Franklin, Curtis, Gillespie, and Crawford among many others.

Frank Vignola • Appel Direct
An extremely versatile jazz guitarist, Frank Vignola has demonstrated that he is capable of playing everything from fusion and commercial pop-jazz to hard bop, post-bop, and swing. The native New Yorker has a wide variety of influences; everyone from Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Pat Metheny to Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian has affected his playing in some way. For Vignola, different influences have asserted themselves at different times -- the Reinhardt or Christian influence might be especially prominent in a swing environment, whereas he has sometimes sounded more Metheny-ish in fusion or pop-jazz/NAC settings. And he might be mindful of Montgomery or Pass on a hard bop or post-bop project. Born on suburban Long Island on December 30, 1965, Vignola was raised in the New York area. The Italian-American started playing the guitar at the age of five and grew up admiring a variety of guitarists. Far from a jazz snob, Vignola never listened to jazz exclusively and was also a major fan of rock, R&B, and pop. The guitarists that he admired ranged from jazz musicians to rock icons like Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Halen. As a young adult, Vignola studied at the Cultural Arts Center of Long Island and went on to enjoy a lot of sideman gigs in the 1980s. The New Yorker was 27 when, in 1993, he signed with Concord Jazz and recorded his first Concord session as a leader, Appel Direct. Several more Concord releases followed in the 1990s, and the early 2000s found Vignola recording for Nagel-Heyer as well as Acoustic Disc. ~ Alex Henderson
~ Alex Henderson

Nat Adderley • Little Big Horn!
Review
by Scott Yanow
This
lesser-known set by Nat Adderley (reissued on CD in the Original Jazz
Classics in 1999) teams the likable cornetist with either Jim Hall or
Kenny Burrell on guitar and the Junior Mance Trio (which consists of
pianist Mance, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Mickey Roker). Nat wrote
all eight selections and, even though none would catch on (a la "Work
Song"), several of the numbers are quite memorable and are deserving of
revival. "Loneliness" sounds properly desolate, "Roses for Your Pillow"
is a superior ballad and most of the other songs are filled with joy,
including "El Chico," "Half-Time" and "Broadway Lady." A fine obscurity
recorded at a time when Nat was one of the stars of his brother
Cannonball Adderley's Sextet.
